beehiiv's AI comes in three layers: writing tools inside the editor, an MCP server that lets
outside AI assistants work in your account, and a newer beehiiv Agent built into the product. Each
layer is unlocked by a different plan, and the vendor measures AI use in units it does not define.
This page sets out what each layer does and costs, from the vendor's pricing file, feature pages
and help centre, read on 9 October 2026. About 40 people a month search for beehiiv AI in the
United States.

## The short answer

| AI feature | Free | Lite | Pro | Enterprise |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AI in the post editor | No | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| AI usage included | "Limited" | "Elevated" | "5x Lite" | Custom |
| MCP for outside AI tools | Read | Read and write | Read and write | Read and write |
| beehiiv Agent | Read | Read and write | Read and write | Read and write |
| AI scheduling and sending via MCP | No | No | Yes | Yes |
| AI bot control on your website | No | No | Yes | Yes |
| No-training, zero-retention, own model key | No | No | No | Yes |

From the vendor's pricing file [3] and trial article [7].

> 💡 **undefined:** Use the API, not the MCP, for anything automated.

## Layer 1: AI in the editor

The AI features page lists a writing assistant, spell check, a smart editor that simplifies,
shortens or extends sentences, tone changes, translation, and image generation, all inside the post
editor [25]. The workflow is an AI block: you insert it, describe what you want, set tone and
structure, and the draft appears as editable copy [25]. The website builder has its own AI
designer, available on every plan, Free included [3].

In-editor AI starts on Lite. During the trial, AI in the editor follows Lite's credit limits [7].

**What it is good for.** Intros, subject line variants, summaries of a long issue, translation of a
newsletter for a second audience, and header images. **What it is not.** A research tool: it writes
from your prompt, not from sources.

## Prompts the vendor suggests

The AI features page offers sample prompts for its AI blocks [25], among them:

- "Create an engaging intro for a newsletter welcoming new subscribers."
- "Rewrite this paragraph to sound more professional and concise."
- "Summarize this newsletter in a few sentences, using a friendly tone."
- "Create a closing CTA encouraging readers to share the newsletter."

They show the intended use: short, bounded edits inside an issue. The page also stresses control:
"All AI-generated content is fully editable, allowing precise control over tone, structure, and
messaging." [25].

> ⚠ **undefined:** AI usage limits are not published as numbers.

## How much AI you get

The pricing table describes AI usage as "Limited" on Free, "Elevated" on Lite and "5x Lite" on Pro
[3]. None of those words is a number. The vendor does not say whether usage is counted in
generations, words or tokens, or what happens when you reach the limit. We could not find a figure on
any page we read.

*Our reading.* Pro gives five times Lite's allowance, whatever Lite's allowance is. A writer who uses
AI for a few drafts a week is unlikely to notice the limit on Lite; a team generating daily content
may. Ask support for the actual figure before relying on it.

## Layer 2: the MCP server

The MCP server connects your account to AI clients that support the Model Context Protocol. The help
centre names Claude, Claude Code, Cursor and Codex and says it is "available to all beehiiv users with
no waitlist or paid plan required." [26]. Free accounts can read; paid accounts can also write
[26].

What an assistant can do through it [26]:

- create and edit posts and templates, and manage content tags;
- create and manage subscriber tags, custom fields, segments, surveys and polls;
- manage signup flows and subscribe forms, and view and manage recommendations;
- view ad network offers and sponsorship agreements, and manage products and tiers;
- build automation workflows and their emails;
- read podcast data, episode stats and transcripts;
- edit page metadata such as SEO titles, and manage site redirects.

On Pro, scheduling and sending posts through the MCP is included; during the trial it is available
and then "Turns off unless you upgrade to Pro or Enterprise." [7].

**Stability.** The help centre is candid: "beehiiv continuously improves MCP tools to better serve the
agent use case, so response formats and behaviors may change over time." [26]. Use the MCP for
work done in conversation, and the versioned API for anything automated [26].

## Connecting an AI assistant, step by step

The help centre describes the setup [26]:

1. Open Settings, then MCP, in the left panel of the account.
2. Choose your AI client; in-app guides exist for Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, Codex and other MCP
   clients.
3. Follow the on-screen steps to grant access.

Access follows your role: "Data accessible via the beehiiv MCP is determined by your workspace user
role and permissions." [26]. A team member who cannot see billing in the app cannot see it
through the assistant either.

**Several accounts in one assistant.** Agencies can add the MCP address more than once with a
different parameter for each connection, signing each into a different beehiiv account [26]. One
assistant can then work across client workspaces, each with that account's permissions.

## Layer 3: beehiiv Agent

The pricing file lists a beehiiv Agent, marked new, with read access on Free and write access from
Lite [3]. On Free, the support row of the same table names beehiiv Agent as the support channel
[3]. The vendor does not describe the agent's capabilities in the pages we read beyond these
lines, so we do not speculate about them.

## AI and your website: bot control

Pro adds *AI bot control* and a custom robots.txt for the publication's website [3]. For a
publisher, that is the switch that decides whether AI crawlers may read the archive. Some newsletters
want their posts cited by AI search; others want them kept out of training data. On Free and Lite you
cannot change it. *Our reading* of the feature names; the vendor does not document their defaults in
the pages we read.

## AI and your data

The Enterprise column carries four AI-related commitments that no self-serve plan has: an agent audit
log, a no-training and zero-retention option, granular role permissions, and a bring-your-own model
key [3]. The models behind beehiiv's AI tools are not named on any page we read.

For most newsletters this is not a barrier. For a publication handling unpublished reporting,
embargoed material or client data, it is: on Lite and Pro you have no published assurance about how
your drafts are used by the AI provider.

## AI for podcasts

Pro includes an *AI podcast newsletter*, which turns an episode into a newsletter [3]. Podcast
transcripts are available on every plan [3], and the MCP can read episode transcripts [26].
A podcaster on Lite can therefore draft newsletters from transcripts through an outside AI assistant
connected by MCP, without Pro's built-in feature.

## A translation workflow, worked through

The editor's translator lets a writer publish an issue in a second language [25]. Suppose an
English newsletter of 4,000 readers adds a Spanish edition for 1,500 readers as a second publication.
The workspace now counts 5,500 subscribers, so it moves from the 5,000 tier to the 10,000 tier: on
Lite, from $109 to $139 a month [3] [4]. The AI translation is included in Lite; the second
audience is what costs $30 a month. *Our arithmetic.*

The alternative, one publication with a language segment, keeps the list at 5,500 either way; the
tier is set by people, not by publications. What changes is the design: separate publications get
separate websites and branding; a segment shares one.

## The AI website designer

The website builder includes an AI designer on every plan, Free included [3]. It generates a site
layout from a description, which you then edit in the builder. On Free you can publish one custom
page; on Lite five; on Pro unlimited [3]. The AI does the first draft of the design; the plan
decides how much of it you can publish.

## Three AI workflows, priced

**A solo writer drafting intros and subject lines.** In-editor AI on Lite: $59 a month or $588 a year
at 1,000 subscribers [3].

**An editor using Claude to manage segments, tags and drafts.** MCP with write access: Lite, same
price. Read-only analysis works on Free.

**A media team scheduling AI-assisted posts across ten publications.** MCP scheduling and ten
publications: Pro, from $109 a month or $1,140 a year at 1,000 subscribers, priced on the whole
workspace [3] [4].

## Who should pay for Pro's AI allowance

Pro's AI allowance is five times Lite's [3], but no one should buy Pro for that alone, because the
unit is not published. Pro is worth it for AI users in three cases: teams scheduling and sending posts
through an assistant, which is Pro only; publishers who need AI bot control on their website; and
podcasters who want the built-in AI podcast newsletter [3]. A writer who uses the editor tools a
few times an issue, or an assistant through the MCP, is well served by Lite.

## Compared with other email platforms

Our AI axis scores for the email category: Klaviyo 4.2, beehiiv 3.6, Brevo 3.5, MailerLite 3.4,
ActiveCampaign 3.2, Mailchimp 3.0, Constant Contact 2.9. beehiiv scores second because the MCP, with
write access from Lite and read access on Free, is one of the most complete AI connections in the
category, and because the editor tools are included rather than sold as credits. It loses points for
undefined usage units, unnamed models and Enterprise-only data commitments.

## What beehiiv AI does not do

- **It does not research.** The editor tools write from your prompt; facts in the output need
  checking.
- **It does not choose what to send.** Segments, timing and offers remain decisions for the writer,
even when an assistant builds them through the MCP.
- **It does not publish its limits.** Usage is described in words, not numbers [3].
- **It does not name its models** on the pages we read, and makes no data commitments below
  Enterprise [3].
- **It is not stable as an interface.** MCP responses may change without a version change [26].

## AI during the trial

The 14-day trial gives AI in the post editor at Lite's credit limits and AI scheduling through the
MCP, which turns off at the end of the trial unless you choose Pro or Enterprise [7]. It is a
fair test of the editor tools; it is not a test of Pro's allowance.

## How to use beehiiv AI well

1. **Write the first draft yourself** for anything that carries your voice; use AI for structure,
   cuts and variants.
2. **Use the MCP for chores**: tagging, segment building, metadata, redirects.
3. **Do not automate on the MCP.** Its responses may change [26].
4. **Check AI-generated images** for rights and accuracy before sending.
5. **Decide on AI crawlers** for your archive; if it matters, that means Pro.

## FAQ

**Does beehiiv have AI?**

Yes: writing, tone, translation and image tools in the editor from Lite, an AI website designer on every plan, and an MCP server for outside AI assistants.

**Can I use Claude with beehiiv?**

Yes, through the beehiiv MCP server; read-only on Free, read and write on paid plans.

## The verdict on beehiiv AI

beehiiv's AI is practical and widely available: some of it on Free, most of it on Lite. The MCP is
the strongest part, turning any capable AI assistant into an operator for the account. The weakest
part is disclosure: undefined usage limits, unnamed models, and data commitments reserved for
Enterprise.
