beehiiv was built for creators who publish, and of the three segments we review here it is the one
where the product fits best. The vendor's creator page puts it in one line: "Most creators piece
together an email platform, a website builder, and a handful of other tools." [64]. beehiiv's
answer is to put the newsletter, website, podcast, community, store and ad income on one account.
This page tests that claim against the vendor's prices and terms, read on 9 October 2026.

## Who this is for

Writers, podcasters, educators and independent journalists whose newsletter is the product, or the
hub of the business. It fits less well for creators whose main income is courses with complex
funnels, who are better served by Kit, and for creators who want discovery more than control, who may
prefer Substack.

> 💡 **undefined:** Use the free recommendation network before paying for growth.

## What a creator gets, by plan

| Need | Free | Lite | Pro |
|---|---|---|---|
| Newsletter to 2,500 | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Website and podcast | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Community | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Sell one digital product | Yes | 3 products | Unlimited |
| Paid subscriptions | No | 1 tier | Unlimited tiers |
| Ad Network | No | Yes | Yes |
| Referral program | No | 3 milestones | Unlimited |
| Sponsorship storefront | No | No | Yes |
| Coaching and webinars | No | No | Yes |
| Remove branding | No | No | Yes |

From the vendor's pricing file [3].

## Five ways to earn, and what each costs

**1. Paid subscriptions.** beehiiv takes 0%; Stripe's 2.9% plus $0.30 applies [17]. Against
Substack's 10%, Lite annual pays for itself at about 98 readers paying $5 a month on a list up to
1,000 [18]. *Our arithmetic.*

**2. The Ad Network.** Advertisers pay per thousand opens or per click; payouts arrive on the 20th
for the prior month, through Stripe Express only [11]. At an illustrative $5 CPM, a list of
10,000 with 4,500 opens per send earns $22.50 a send [11]. *Our arithmetic* on the vendor's
example rate.

**3. Paid recommendations.** Other newsletters pay you per verified subscriber you send them; beehiiv
keeps 20% [13].

**4. Sponsorships.** Pro adds a storefront for selling your own ad placements directly to brands
[3].

**5. Digital products.** Guides, templates, downloads and gated content, with "0% COMMISSION.
FOREVER." on the vendor's page [65] and Apple Pay and Google Pay at checkout [65]. Coaching
and webinars are listed on the same page but are Pro features in the pricing table [3].

> ⚠ **undefined:** Coaching and webinars are Pro features.

## A creator's first year, priced month by month

Take a newsletter that starts on Free with 800 readers, grows 250 a month, launches paid
subscriptions in month four and converts 4% of its list at $7 a month.

| Month | List | Plan and tier | Monthly cost | Paying readers | Paid revenue a month |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1,050 | Free | $0 | 0 | $0 |
| 4 | 1,800 | Lite, 2,500 tier | $79 | 72 | $504 |
| 7 | 2,550 | Lite, 5,000 tier | $109 | 102 | $714 |
| 12 | 3,800 | Lite, 5,000 tier | $109 | 152 | $1,064 |

*Our arithmetic* on the vendor's monthly Lite prices [3]. By month twelve the plan costs about
10% of paid revenue; on Substack, 10% would be the platform's share at any size [18]. The two are
level here, and beehiiv pulls ahead with every paid reader added after it. Switching to annual
billing at month twelve, $1,140 a year at the 5,000 tier, would lower the plan cost to about 9% of
revenue.

## Podcasters

Podcast hosting is part of every plan: one show and 5,000 downloads a month on Free, two shows and
15,000 on Lite, unlimited shows and 50,000 on Pro [3]. Dynamic ad insertion, programmatic
advertising and ad targeting start on Lite; private subscriber feeds are one on Lite and two on Pro;
premium episode previews, VAST tags and the AI podcast newsletter are Pro [3].

The download cap is the number to watch. A weekly show with 4,000 listeners an episode delivers about
17,000 downloads a month and passes Lite's 15,000. *Our arithmetic.* The newsletter and the podcast
are priced on different measures, so one can outgrow its plan before the other.

## Community

Every plan includes a community with channels, direct messages, member profiles and moderation; feed
history runs 90 days on Free, twelve months on Lite and unlimited on Pro, and notification emails
5,000, 25,000 and 250,000 a month [3]. The app is a Progressive Web App, installed from the
browser [24]. For a creator charging for access, member access control moves from *by tier* on
Free to *by attributes* on Lite and *by application* on Pro [3].

## Teams and guest writers

Guest authors are one on Free, three on Lite and unlimited on Pro; seats are one, two and ten
[3]. A newsletter with a rotating roster of contributors needs Pro. One reviewer found the free
plan's guest author limit cut to one in the October 2026 restructure [19].

## Reporting to sponsors

Sponsors ask for history. Free keeps 30 days of analytics, Lite twelve months, Pro unlimited [3].
Ad Network reports arrive 96 hours after a send and serve as payout records [11] [12]. A
creator selling sponsorships directly, through Pro's storefront, should keep at least a year of open
and click history to price placements.

## Growth tools

- **Referral program.** Readers earn rewards for bringing friends; Lite allows three milestones, Pro
unlimited [3]. A testimonial on the vendor's page credits it with "probably accounted for 5-10%
of our growth" [66]; it is a vendor-chosen quote, not a measurement.
- **Recommendation network.** Free on every plan; you recommend others and they recommend you
  [3].
- **Paid recommendations.** Buy subscribers from other newsletters at a price you set; a $20 minimum
  to fund the offer [13].
- **SEO.** Every post is published to the website; Pro adds custom robots.txt and AI bot control
  [3].

## Which plan for which creator

| Creator | Plan | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Starting out, free newsletter, under 2,500 | Free | Unlimited sends, website, podcast feed |
| Selling one guide or template | Free | One digital product allowed |
| Launching paid subscriptions | Lite | Paid subscriptions at 0%, one paid tier |
| Earning from ads | Lite | Ad Network from Lite |
| Several paid tiers or group subscriptions | Pro | Unlimited tiers, group subscriptions |
| Selling sponsorships directly | Pro | Sponsorship storefront |
| White-label brand | Pro | Branding removed |
| Coaching or webinars | Pro | Webinars and coaching |

From the vendor's pricing file [3].

## Tools for paid newsletters on Lite

Lite includes metered paywalls, coupons and promo codes, programmatic ads and paid recommendations
[3]. A metered paywall lets readers see a set number of paid posts before paying, which is often a
better converter than a hard paywall. Readers can also be offered a pause instead of cancelling, for
one, three or six months, through the retention flow [30].

## What each price point loses to card fees

beehiiv takes nothing, but Stripe takes 2.9% plus $0.30 on every charge [17], and the fixed part
weighs heavily on small payments:

| Reader pays | Stripe fee | Share of the payment |
|---|---|---|
| $5 a month | $0.45 | 8.9% |
| $8 a month | $0.53 | 6.7% |
| $15 a month | $0.74 | 4.9% |
| $50 a year | $1.75 | 3.5% |
| $80 a year | $2.62 | 3.3% |

*Our arithmetic* on the fee beehiiv publishes. A creator who moves a third of monthly readers at $5 to
a $50 annual plan cuts card costs on those readers by more than half. It is the cheapest optimisation
available on any platform.

## Common mistakes creators make on beehiiv

1. **Launching paid subscriptions in the trial.** They cannot be set up until you pay [7].
2. **Paying annually too early.** Annual plans cannot pause and are not refunded [4] [6].
3. **Forgetting that every publication counts** toward one tier [4].
4. **Counting on ad income before checking Stripe Express** availability [11].
5. **Building many automations on Lite.** Ten live is the ceiling [3].
6. **Importing an old list.** High complaint rates trigger reviews; 0.30% is problematic [41].

## The creator's marketing claims, checked

The creator page states "12X higher engagement than social media platforms", "4X more sponsorships
through the beehiiv ad network" and "2X more revenue through direct monetization" [64]. The page
does not say what these are measured against, over what period, or for which creators. We treat them
as marketing, not data. The same page says beehiiv is trusted by "more than 135,000" publishers,
while the vendor's own facts file says 130,000 [64] [59].

## Three creators, priced for a year

**A podcaster with 3,000 newsletter subscribers and a weekly show.** Lite at the 5,000 tier:
$1,140 a year [3]. Podcast hosting is included up to 15,000 downloads a month on Lite; ads can be
inserted dynamically [3].

**An independent journalist with 12,000 readers, 500 paying $8 a month.** Lite at the 25,000 tier:
$2,028 a year. Paid revenue: $48,000. Substack would keep $4,800. beehiiv saves $2,772 a year before
any ad income. *Our arithmetic* on [3] and [18].

**A creator selling templates to 6,000 subscribers.** Lite at the 10,000 tier, $1,428 a year, for
three products with discount codes [3]. Kit's free plan would cover the list and selling for $0
plus its 3.5% and 30 cents per sale [20]. Below roughly $33,000 a year in sales, Kit costs less.

## Moving a paid newsletter in

From Substack, paid readers move through Stripe and, by beehiiv's account, "Your readers won't be
notified of the switch." [16]. From Kit, they cannot be moved directly when subscriptions run
through Kit and Stripe Express; beehiiv's guide offers re-subscription or complimentary access instead
[45]. Plan the move around that difference, and make sure the old platform stops billing, since
the migration tool "does not automatically cancel billing in your previous platform or Stripe
account" [53].

## Ad Network eligibility

The Ad Network is open to paid plans and not available during the trial [11] [3]. Payouts
need a Stripe Express account; "beehiiv does not support alternative payment processors (such as
PayPal, Wise, or PriyoPay) for Ad Network or Paid recommendations earnings." [11]. Creators in
countries Stripe Express does not serve cannot take part. Pending earnings are still paid after a
downgrade or account closure [12].

## What to watch

- **No refunds.** "All sales are final upon subscription" [6].
- **Account reviews** can pause sending at once [8]. Import only opted-in readers.
- **The tier counts every publication** in the workspace [4].
- **Support** is a chatbot on Free and tickets on paid plans; there is no phone or email channel
  [14].
- **Plan changes.** The October 2026 restructure changed limits such as guest authors [19].

## How it compares for creators

| | beehiiv | Kit | Substack |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free plan | 2,500 subscribers | 10,000 subscribers | No plan fee |
| Share of subscription revenue | 0% + Stripe | 0.6% above processing | 10% |
| Entry paid plan, 1,000 subscribers | $588 a year | $390 a year | None |
| Ad network | Yes | Sponsorships listed | Not described on pages read |
| Website, podcast, community | All three | Landing pages | Publication site |

From each vendor's own pages [3] [20] [18] [38].

## FAQ

**Is beehiiv good for creators?**

For creators whose newsletter earns, it is the strongest in our email category; for creators still building an audience, Substack or Kit's free plan may suit better.

## The verdict for creators

For a creator whose newsletter earns, beehiiv is the strongest platform in our email category: the
best tools for paid subscriptions and advertising, and the only one bundling website, podcast and
community. For a creator still finding readers, Substack's network or Kit's larger free plan may be
the better start.
