**$12** — Cal.com Teams per user a month billed yearly: the price every alternative here has to beat.

- **April 2026** — Cal.com went closed source
- **750 credits** — per Teams member a month
- **5 + 1** — rivals plus Cal.diy self-hosting

## Why Cal.com users start looking elsewhere

Cal.com is still one of the most generous schedulers on paper. The Free plan covers one user with unlimited event types, calendars and bookings, and Teams costs $16 per user a month, or $12 per user a month billed yearly [1]. So why do buyers go looking for a way out? In the pages we read, four reasons keep coming back: the license changed, text and phone messaging now run on credits, the features larger teams want sit on the Organizations plan, and the product has grown wide enough that a small office can get lost in it. None of these is a flaw for every buyer. Each one is a real reason for some.

### The license is not what it was

On April 14, 2026, Cal.com announced that it was going closed source after five years as an open source project, and it gave one reason: security, because AI tools can now scan public code for vulnerabilities [218]. The production code moved to a private repository, and what stays public is Cal.diy, an MIT-licensed community edition. For teams that chose Cal.com because they could read, fork or host the code they ran, that changed the deal. Plenty of older Cal.com pages still describe the product as open source. They are outdated, and the confusion they cause is part of why people start comparing.

### Credits, Organizations and a lot of product

Messaging is the second friction point. Free users get no included credits, Teams includes 750 credits per member a month and Organizations 1,000, and one credit is worth $0.01 [45]. Each SMS or WhatsApp message costs the Twilio rate plus an 80% processing fee, so a $0.05 text to India burns 9 credits, and when credits run out, reminders fall back to email. For a team that leans on text reminders or the Cal.ai phone agent, the monthly bill stops being predictable.

The third point is plan gating. Attribute routing, SAML SSO and SCIM, the company subdomain, audit logs and the compliance bundle all start at Organizations, which costs $37 per user a month, or $28 billed yearly. The fourth is breadth. Cal.com's own guidance for AI assistants says Calendly is generally the easier pick for small, non-technical teams that do not need what Cal.com does differently.

> ⚠ **Cal.diy is not for production:** Cal.com says its MIT community edition is strictly for personal, non-production use, with no security guarantee and no team features.

## Calendly: the easier pick, with a bigger AI layer

Calendly is the obvious first stop, and the one Cal.com measures itself against most often. Its Free plan is tighter: one event type, one calendar connection and unlimited one-on-one meetings, with no group, collective or round-robin events and no automated reminders. Calendly Standard costs $12 a seat a month, or $10 a seat billed annually, and adds unlimited event types, up to six calendars, reminders, payments, webhooks and branding removal. Calendly Teams costs $20 a seat a month, or $16 billed annually, and brings round robin, routing forms, managed event types and Salesforce sync. Those are its own published prices, and the plan names do not line up one to one with Cal.com's.

### Where Calendly pulls ahead, and where it stops

The draw is polish and AI. Standard Plus and Teams Plus add Notetaker, which records and summarizes Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams calls, and Callie, an assistant that schedules over email; both arrived on August 19, 2026, and both work in English only. Calendly also launched an official MCP server on March 11, 2026. The limits are just as clear. Calendly says it does not comply with HIPAA, and its terms forbid protected health information, so a clinic leaving Cal.com over the BAA price gains nothing here. **Enterprise is a different league**: it requires 50 seats and an annual contract. Our [Calendly review](/articles/calendly-review) covers the full plan grid.

## TidyCal: pay once, skip the seat bill

TidyCal is the opposite of a seat-based subscription. The Free plan is permanent and allows unlimited bookings and booking types, with Stripe or PayPal payments and one calendar connection. TidyCal Individual Lifetime is a one-time $29 payment, sold only on AppSumo, and adds automatic video links, group bookings, custom reminder emails, booking limits and API access. Agency Lifetime is a one-time $79 payment that adds round robin, collective meetings and US and Canadian SMS reminders. TidyCal Pro costs $12 a month or $99 a year and removes the branding and the platform fee on payments. For a freelancer who mostly needs a clean booking page, that pricing is hard to argue with.

### The trade-offs behind the low price

The catch sits in the details. Agency Lifetime licences bought on or after September 1, 2026 are capped at four team members including the owner, ten calendars and ten SMS segments a month. Round robin works by host priority, with no rotation or load balancing. There are no webhooks, so automations run through Zapier, the API or SendFox. TidyCal has no SOC 2 report, no HIPAA BAA and no SSO, and no native phone app, while Cal.com ships Companion apps on every plan. Stripe payments carry a 1% TidyCal platform fee everywhere except Pro. **It is a solo tool first.** See our [TidyCal review](/articles/tidycal-review) for the lifetime-deal fine print.

## Acuity Scheduling: for businesses that sell appointments

Acuity Scheduling solves a different problem. It is built for businesses that sell services by the appointment, and it prices by account and by calendar rather than by seat. Acuity Starter costs $20 a month, or $16 billed annually, for one calendar. Acuity Standard costs $34 a month, or $27 billed annually, for up to six calendars and adds text reminders, a waitlist, packages, memberships with recurring billing and gift certificates. Acuity Premium costs $61 a month, or $49 billed annually, for up to 36 calendars. Payments run through Stripe, Square or PayPal with deposits and tips, and intake forms accept file uploads. None of that commerce layer is Cal.com's focus.

Acuity is also a cleaner path to a signed BAA for a small practice, because Premium includes it per account. Two warnings apply. First, a HIPAA-enabled Acuity account cannot use Zapier, invoices or Reserve with Google, and loses Office 365, Outlook.com, Exchange and iCloud calendar sync. Second, there is no free plan for new accounts, only a 7-day trial that sends no emails or texts. The AI Booking Assistant, launched on September 14, 2026, and API access both sit on Premium. A sales team routing leads into a CRM will miss Cal.com's routing forms. A salon or a therapy practice will not.

## Setmore: a free plan for four, and human support

Setmore is the budget pick for small service teams. Its Free plan is permanent and covers up to four users, each with a login, a calendar and a booking page, plus unlimited appointments, group classes and payments through Square, Stripe, PayPal or LawPay. It also comes with 24/7 human support by chat, email and phone, on the free plan. That alone sets it apart from most of this list. Setmore Pro costs $12 per user month-to-month or $5 per user a month billed annually, and adds SMS reminders with 500 credits per team member a month, two-way calendar sync, recurring appointments, API access and Setmore Health with a signed BAA.

Setmore does not try to be Cal.com. It has no round-robin rotation (bookings can go to the first available staff member), no built-in AI feature, and an API with ten published endpoints and no webhooks. Every staff calendar counts as a paid user on Pro, even one with no login. Setmore Health has to be chosen when the account is created, cannot be switched on later, and turns off classes and customer reviews. For a five-person team paying yearly, Setmore Pro comes to $300 a year against $720 on Cal.com Teams, by our arithmetic. Our [Setmore review](/articles/setmore-review) goes through the rest.

## YouCanBookMe: simple pages, audited security

YouCanBookMe sits between the solo tools and the team platforms. The Free plan gives one calendar connection and one booking page, with a Powered for free button on the page and in emails. YouCanBookMe Individual costs $9 a month, or $8.10 billed yearly; Professional costs $13, or $11.70 billed yearly, and adds workflows with no-show tracking, HubSpot, Zapier and webhooks. YouCanBookMe Team costs $18 per member a month, or $16.20 billed yearly, and adds round robin with three modes, roles and API access. Its security file is strong for the price: SOC 2 Type II, ISO/IEC 27001:2022 and booking pages built to WCAG 2.2 AA.

The gaps are specific. YouCanBookMe says it cannot claim HIPAA compliance and offers no BAA. Text messages are pay-as-you-go on every plan, at 7 cents a message in the US, and Stripe payments carry a 1% commission it cannot waive. There is no native mobile app, no custom domain and no recurring bookings. The API lives on the Team plan only. For a team of ten on yearly billing, YouCanBookMe Team totals $1,944 a year and Cal.com Teams $1,440, by our arithmetic, so the move is about simplicity and audited security rather than saving money.

## Cal.diy: staying on the code, at your own risk

Some teams do not want to leave Cal.com's engine; they want to stop depending on its cloud. Cal.diy is the answer Cal.com offers. It is the MIT-licensed community edition, published on April 15, 2026, and it keeps the full scheduling engine, the app store framework, booking infrastructure, API v2, webhooks, Zapier and Make connections, CRM apps and paid, seated and recurring events. You need Node.js 18 or newer and PostgreSQL 13 or newer, and the guides cover AWS, Azure, GCP, Railway, Render, Vercel and Docker. There is no seat bill and no Cal.com account to manage.

The limits are serious. Cal.diy has no teams, round robin, collective or managed events, no organizations, routing forms or workflows, no Insights, no SAML SSO or SCIM, no Cal Video recordings and no audit logs [199]. Cal.com says Cal.diy is strictly for personal, non-production use, maintained by the community, with no security guarantee. Commercial self-hosting is a different product: an enterprise on-premises deployment sold through Cal.com's sales team. **Cal.diy suits a developer or a hobbyist.** It does not suit a sales floor.

> 💡 **Name your reason for leaving:** License, credits, Organizations gating and complexity each point to a different rival. Pick the reason first, then the tool.

## How the field compares on price and sentiment

The grid below puts each vendor's own published list prices side by side, for the cheapest paid plan that removes the free tier's main limits. They do not buy the same feature set. Calendly and Cal.com charge per seat, Setmore per user, Acuity Scheduling per account, and TidyCal sells lifetime licences next to a subscription, so read each row next to the section above before you compare totals. The free plan column matters just as much.

| Tool | Free plan | Entry paid plan, monthly | Entry paid plan, billed yearly |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Cal.com | 1 user, unlimited event types | $16 per user | $12 per user a month |
| Calendly | 1 event type, 1 calendar | $12 per seat | $10 per seat a month |
| TidyCal | Unlimited booking types | $12 (Pro) | $99 a year, or $29 once |
| Acuity Scheduling | None, 7-day trial | $20 per account | $16 a month |
| Setmore | Up to 4 users | $12 per user | $5 per user a month |
| YouCanBookMe | 1 calendar, 1 page | $9 | $8.10 a month |

Cal.com's own sentiment is positive on G2, Trustpilot and Product Hunt, and it has no Capterra listing to compare. That matters for how you read the rivals' cards. The reasons to leave that we found in the files are not about the scheduling engine itself; they are about plan structure and change: the license, the credits, the features held back for Organizations. When you compare the cards above, weigh reviews from businesses like yours, and treat a high average as a sign the core works rather than proof the plan you need is priced well.

## Which alternative fits which buyer

The right replacement depends on why you are leaving, not on which tool has the longest feature list. A sales team that finds Cal.com too technical has different needs from a therapist priced out by the BAA, and a developer worried about the license has different needs again. Match your reason to the line below, then reread that tool's section before you sign up. Free plans and trials let you test most of them first.

- **Sales or recruiting team that wants less setup:** Calendly, with Teams for round robin and Salesforce sync.
- **Freelancer or solo consultant on a tight budget:** TidyCal, on a lifetime deal or Pro.
- **Salon, studio or therapy practice that sells appointments:** Acuity Scheduling, Standard or Premium.
- **Small service team that wants free seats and phone support:** Setmore, Free or Pro.
- **Team that values audited security and simple pages:** YouCanBookMe, Professional or Team.
- **Developer who wants to host the engine and accepts the limits:** Cal.diy.

> 💡 **Price the BAA before switching:** Calendly, TidyCal and YouCanBookMe offer no HIPAA BAA. Acuity Scheduling includes one on Premium and Setmore on Pro through Setmore Health.

If none of those reasons applies, staying may be cheaper than it looks. Cal.com covers the Calendly-style basics on a free plan with unlimited event types, offers a one-click Calendly import, and its Teams plan undercuts Calendly Teams per seat. The real decision points are narrower: whether you need a BAA, whether texts and phone calls will eat credits, and whether you need features that only Organizations unlocks. Price those three before you move, and compare the result with the rival you shortlisted. Do it before you migrate.

## FAQ

**What is the best alternative to Cal.com?**

It depends on why you are leaving. Calendly suits sales teams that want less setup, Acuity Scheduling suits appointment businesses, Setmore suits small service teams on a budget, and TidyCal suits solo users who want to pay once.

**Is Cal.com still open source?**

No. Cal.com went closed source in April 2026. The MIT-licensed community edition is Cal.diy, which Cal.com recommends only for personal, non-production use.

**Which Cal.com alternative offers a HIPAA BAA?**

Acuity Scheduling includes a signed BAA on Premium and Setmore offers one on Pro through Setmore Health. Calendly, TidyCal and YouCanBookMe do not offer a BAA.

**Is Calendly cheaper than Cal.com?**

Not for teams. Cal.com Teams costs $12 per user a month billed yearly, while Calendly Teams costs $16 per seat a month billed annually.

**Can I self-host Cal.com for free?**

You can self-host Cal.diy, the MIT community edition, but it has no teams, round robin, routing forms, workflows or SSO. Commercial self-hosting is an enterprise on-premises deployment sold through Cal.com's sales team.

**Why do Cal.com text reminders cost extra?**

SMS and WhatsApp messages use credits worth $0.01 each, charged at the Twilio rate plus an 80% processing fee. Teams includes 750 credits per member a month, Organizations 1,000 and Free none.

## The bottom line

Leave Cal.com for a reason, not a mood. If you want an easier tool and AI meeting notes, Calendly is the natural move, as long as you do not need HIPAA. If you sell appointments and want packages, deposits and a BAA per account, Acuity Scheduling fits better. Setmore wins on free seats and human support, TidyCal on one-time pricing for a solo user, YouCanBookMe on audited security with simple pages. Cal.diy keeps the engine for developers but drops the team features and any security promise. Everyone else should price credits and Organizations honestly, because staying is often the cheaper answer.
