Canva Education is free for eligible K-12 teachers, their students and their schools, and it is one of the most searched ways into
Canva: *canva for educators* and *canva for education* each draw about 12,100 searches a month in the US in our data, with teachers and
students adding thousands more. This guide explains who qualifies, what the free plan includes, how classrooms and school teams work, how
student data and AI are handled, and what universities and other educators can use instead. Everything comes from Canva's own pages,
read on 9 October 2026.

## The short answer

If you are a certified K-12 teacher currently teaching at an accredited school, Canva Education is free, with most of Canva's premium
features and classroom tools [25]. Students join through their teacher. Schools and districts can get an institution-wide version with
SSO and admin controls, also free. University staff and students are not covered; universities buy Canva Campus [29].

> 💡 **undefined:** Sign up with a school email for instant verification.

## Who qualifies

Canva lists the roles that can use Canva Education: certified K-12 teachers from formally accredited schools who are currently teaching,
certified K-12 school librarians, learning support assistants and teachers, curriculum specialists, and certified teachers at technical or
vocational schools serving primary or secondary students, plus K-12 schools themselves [25].

## Who does not qualify

Canva also lists who is not eligible, and the list surprises some applicants: colleges, universities and other higher education
institutions, including lecturers and staff; parents of children in K-12 education; and homeschool educators who are not licensed or
employed by a K-12 institution [25]. If you fall into one of those groups, look elsewhere. Pro, Canva Campus through your institution, or
the alternatives below.

> 💡 **undefined:** Keep paid side work in a separate personal account.

## How verification works

If you sign up with a verified educational email domain, you get access right away. If not, you upload a photo or scan of at least one
document showing your name, your school's name and your teaching position [25]. Canva may still ask you to verify your teaching
credentials [25]. Rejected applications can be corrected and resubmitted; Canva says there is no limit on genuine corrected
resubmissions [23].

## What is included

Canva says Education is "100% free" with no paywalls [2]. It includes most premium features, educational templates for every subject,
LMS integrations, and tools to share work and assignments with students [2]. The teachers' page lists lesson plans, presentations,
sheets and posters; inviting students by school email; assigning tasks and tracking progress; interactive games, polls and quizzes; Draw for
live annotation; Magic Write for lesson plans and activities; and accessibility tools such as translation, captions and an accessibility
checker [27].

> ⚠ **undefined:** Education is for non-commercial teaching only.

## AI on Canva Education

Education has a monthly AI allowance of up to 200 Premium uses or 20 Ultra uses per person, with Standard tools unmetered [4]. Canva AI
2.0, its Memory Library and Connectors are not part of Education, which gets Canva AI 1.0 features and some tools such as Magic Write and
Background Remover with limited monthly use [124]. AI Pass is not available on Education [5].

Teachers control what students can use. On Education, only administrators and teachers have Magic features by default, and Magic Media, Dream
Lab and Magic Insights are the only ones enabled for students [54]. All social media and generative AI apps are disabled for students
until an admin enables them [35].

## Student data and AI training

"Canva never uses student data to train AI models." [26] The privacy policy repeats it for all Education content: "We will not use User
Content of Canva Education for AI training." [47] Canva states that its education and district offerings are FERPA and COPPA compliant,
that it has signed the National Data Privacy Agreement, and that it is committed to GDPR compliance [2]. The Education terms limit
"Student Data" to the information needed to establish and operate a student's account, such as name, email, password and school enrolment
[32].

> ⚠ **undefined:** AI Pass and Canva AI 2.0 are not on Education.

## Students under 13

Under COPPA and Canva's privacy policy, students below 13 need parental consent to use Canva Education [31]. In the US, the FTC has said
schools or districts may act as a parent's agent and give consent on the parent's behalf [31]. If your school has signed up
institution-wide, administrators may already have a consent process; otherwise Canva provides a sample consent template for teachers
[31]. The Education terms make obtaining consent the teacher's or institution's responsibility [32].

## Accessibility and language support

The teachers' page lists tools for accessible teaching: converting formats, translating, adding video captions, and an accessibility
checker to help make materials more inclusive [27]. Translate handles more than 100 languages [122], and on Education it is a
Standard tool that does not use the AI allowance [4]. For classes with students learning English, a worksheet can be produced in a
second language from the same design in a minute. Teachers can also upload an existing file and refresh it with Canva's AI editing tools
[27].

## Disney templates in the classroom

Since 18 October 2024, Canva has offered Disney-themed templates and elements to Pro, Canva Education and Canva for Nonprofits accounts in
certain territories [43]. The licence is narrow: in the United States they may be used for printed merchandise "for personal or
educational purposes only" [43], and they may not be used to make merchandise otherwise. Fine for a classroom display. Not for a
fundraiser's T-shirts.

## Safe content for school

Canva filters its libraries for Education users with blocked search terms, a machine-learning system that flags and removes content that is
not safe for school, and human moderators who review the collections [2]. No filter is perfect. Teachers should still preview
templates before sharing them with a class.

## Classes, school teams and roles

Teachers can invite students by email, by invite link, or by importing a Google Classroom class [31]. A school team is a shared space
where teachers and students at one school work together; it does not officially represent the school [30]. School teams have three roles,
and admins can manage members, create classes and set the team's logos, colours and fonts [30]. When a team reaches its member limit,
no new invitations can be sent; schools that need more seats apply for Canva Education for Schools and Districts [30].

## Schools and districts

The institution-wide plan lets a school or district set the number of seats for teachers, staff and students [30], and adds
enterprise-level security, deployment via SSO, onboarding support and professional development training, at no cost [2]. Districts can
connect Canva to their LMS and control which apps students can use [35].

## Using it only for teaching

The Education terms are strict about use: "You will only use, and only permit your students to use, Canva Education (and all Licensed Content
incorporated therein) for non-commercial, educational purposes." [32] A teacher who sells lesson resources or runs a tutoring business on the
side should use a separate personal account on Free or Pro for that work. Canva Education may only be used by an institution's students, staff
and faculty [32].

## Printing for school

Teachers and students can order prints through Canva Print, with free delivery options and automated proofing [75]. Orders ship within
the same country, or within the same region in Europe, and in the US some stores offer pickup [76]. The students' page points to posters
and swag for campus clubs with free delivery [28]. Remember the Education licence is for non-commercial, educational use [32].

## When a teacher leaves or a class is deleted

If a teacher or school deletes a Canva Education account or team, there are 14 days to log in and restore the account and its data; after that
it is deleted permanently. Students in a deleted class also have 14 days [139]. Teachers moving schools should copy their own
materials first. Before leaving.

## Affinity for schools

Canva gives Affinity, its professional photo, vector and layout app, to schools free, and has pledged to keep it free for schools [56]. For
K-12 schools, Affinity is on unless the school opts out through its Customer Success Manager; higher education institutions ask to have it
switched on [25].

## Students outside a Canva school

Students do not need Canva Education to use Canva. Anyone can sign up for Canva Free, and Canva's students page notes that if a school or
university already has a Canva account, students can log in through it to get premium features [28]. University students at a Campus
institution log in with their university email; others can use Free or Pro [2]. The students page pitches Canva for group projects,
club social media, video, posters and resumes [28].

## AI safeguards at university level

For Canva Campus, Canva says university admins can turn AI features on or off for staff and students [2]. That is the same control
K-12 schools get through Magic feature settings [54]. Institutions with academic-integrity policies on AI can align Canva with
them before rollout.

## Universities: Canva Campus

Universities are excluded from Canva Education and buy Canva Campus instead. It is priced on Enterprise terms, with a minimum number of staff
licences that depends on enrolment; once the minimum is met, all students get premium access at no extra cost [2]. Qualifying institutions
are accredited universities and colleges granting degrees of at least two years' full-time study; training centres, museums, libraries and
military schools do not qualify [2]. Campus can be bought directly, through AWS Marketplace or through resellers such as CDW [2].

## Data agreements for schools

By creating a Canva Education account, a school agrees to Canva's Data Processing Addendum, which prevails over the general terms where
they conflict, unless the school has signed a separate data agreement with Canva [32]. The Education terms also change the governing
law to that of the state, province or territory where the institution is based [32]. A district's procurement or privacy officer
should review the DPA [72] rather than the consumer terms.

## District roles

On Canva for Districts, organisation admins, school team admins and teachers can invite people, and districts can roll Canva out across
schools with SSO [31] [2]. Teachers inside a district do not need to verify individually. That saves weeks. For a district, the decision is less
about the price, which is zero, and more about consent processes, app controls and data agreements.

## How Canva compares for schools

Figma gives teachers and students over 13 free access to its Professional tier, and districts its Enterprise tier, including at university level
[87]. Adobe Express is free for qualified K-12 educators [97]. Piktochart's Education plan costs US$39 per member a year [90].
Canva's advantage in K-12 is breadth: presentations, documents, video, whiteboards, classroom tools and safe-content filtering in one free plan.
Figma's advantage is higher education. Canva's is K-12.

## Other tools teachers use

Piktochart says it has helped more than 30,000 teachers and educators and focuses on syllabuses, interactive assignments and visual handouts
[109]; its Education plan costs US$39 per member a year and needs a valid educational email [90]. Visme pitches interactive
lessons and analytics that show whether students read class materials [110]. Figma offers free access for teachers and students over
13 and partners with Google to bring Figma to Google Workspace districts in the US, UK and Japan [87]. Canva's K-12 offer is the most
complete free one; the others suit narrower uses.

## A worked example: one teacher, one term

A secondary-school teacher verifies with a school email and gets access the same day. She imports her Google Classroom class, assigns a poster
project from a template, runs a quiz in a presentation, and uses Magic Write to draft three differentiated versions of a worksheet. Her students
can use Magic Media and Dream Lab for images but not social apps. None of it costs anything. Nothing at all, and none of the students' work is used to train
Canva's AI [26] [54].

## Common pitfalls

- Applying as a university lecturer; higher education is not eligible [25].
- Inviting students under 13 without consent [31].
- Using the Education account for a side business; it is for non-commercial teaching only [32].
- Expecting AI Pass or Canva AI 2.0 on Education [5] [124].
- Leaving a school without copying your own materials.

## FAQ

**Is Canva free for teachers?**

Yes, for certified K-12 teachers currently teaching at an accredited school, through Canva Education.

**Can university lecturers get Canva Education?**

No. Higher education is excluded; universities buy Canva Campus on Enterprise terms.

## Our verdict

For K-12 teachers, Canva Education is one of the best free offers in education software: broad, safe for students by default, and genuinely free.
Verify with a school email, set up consent for younger students, keep commercial work in a separate account, and if you teach at a university,
ask your institution about Canva Campus or use Figma's free education plan.
