## The short answer: an editor with a metered AI layer

CapCut AI is not one tool. It is a video editor with a generative layer on top: video from Dreamina Seedance and third-party models, images from Dola Seedream, sound from Seed Audio, plus older helpers such as auto captions and text to speech. The helpers are mostly free to start, while generation runs on AI credits that come mainly with a paid plan. CapCut's US pricing page lists Pro at $19.99 a month billed monthly with 1,200 monthly AI credits and Ultra at $79 a month billed monthly with 8,645 [1]. The page calls those figures reference only, and the price after sign-in can differ by region, device and account; our [CapCut pricing guide](/articles/capcut-pricing) tracks the details.

Our verdict is simple. Free covers the helpers and a few free uses of some AI tools, not serious generation; our guide to [whether CapCut is free](/articles/is-capcut-free) maps its limits. Pro suits someone who generates a few clips a week and leans on captions and voices. Ultra pays off only past a monthly credit threshold we compute below, and Teams gives every seat Pro's 1,200 credits, pooled at team level, which can undercut both for a two-person team.

> ⚠ **No AI image generation on the phone:** As of December 2025, CapCut's help center says the mobile app has no AI image generation; use CapCut Online or CapCut Desktop 7.7.0 or later.

## From idea to edit: the models and where they sit

CapCut describes its AI workflow as a chain. AI Lab, launched in 2025, collects ideas. Infinite Canvas and Director Mode lay out the story shot by shot, where you can rework a single shot or continue a scene with the Agent. The material then lands in the multi-track editor, where Edit Pilot acts as an AI editing partner. Video Studio and Design Studio hold the generation tools, and Skills save a style or workflow, such as a color-grading process, for reuse. Nothing here replaces the timeline. It feeds it.

### Seedance, Seedream and Seed Audio

Seedance is the video family. Seedance 2.0 makes clips up to 15 seconds in six aspect ratios and reached the US on April 7, 2026. Seedance 2.5 stretches clips to 30 seconds, accepts up to 50 references, and lets you edit a timestamp, character or element without regenerating the whole clip [2]. Its launch post rolled it out to subscriber accounts of people over 16, and the US pricing page lists it only on paid cards. Treat it as paid. Seedance 2.0 Mini is the budget option, which CapCut says uses up to 58% fewer credits.

For images, Dola Seedream 5.0 and 5.0 Pro power Design Studio, which generates logos, ads, banners and social posts; Seedream 5.0 Pro adds interactive editing, where you circle a region or split elements into draggable layers. Seed Audio 1.5 generates dialogue, ambience, effects and music from a prompt. CapCut also lists third-party models, including Veo 3.1, Sora 2, Kling 2.6 and GPT Image 2. That list changes often. Check the model picker before you plan around one model.

> 💡 **Draft in Mini, finish in 2.5:** CapCut says Seedance 2.0 Mini uses up to 58% fewer credits, so test prompts and framing there and save Seedance 2.5 for the final clip.

### Script to video and the Codex plugin

The AI video maker turns a script into scenes with voiceover text that you can reorder or edit by hand, on web and desktop (desktop is still rolling out by region). CapCut x Codex, a plugin in the ChatGPT desktop app on PC, turns prompts and raw footage into editable video drafts you refine in chat or open in the CapCut editor. Availability varies by version, account and region. CapCut calls it the official workflow.

## How credits really work

Credits are the meter. CapCut spends them on premium AI such as image generation, script-to-video, AI video generation, AI Portrait, Smart Cutout and premium voiceovers, and it shows the cost before you confirm. There are three types. **Subscription credits** arrive with Pro, Ultra or Teams, expire at the end of their grant period, never roll over and disappear the moment the plan ends. Activity credits from campaigns and referrals carry their own expiry. **Purchased credits** are bought separately [3].

Credits cannot pay for Pro, Teams or storage, have no cash value and cannot move between accounts. Holding them does not replace a plan either: CapCut asks you to subscribe before you buy credits, and some AI tools need an active membership. Buy them on CapCut Web, the only place with the full breakdown, expiry dates and history. Desktop 6.0 and later shows the balance only when you start an AI action, and Mobile 11.7.0 and later shows one merged total. Gifted memberships usually include no AI credits.

| Plan | Monthly AI credits | Seedance 2.0 Mini allowance |
|---|---|---|
| Free | None listed | None listed |
| Pro | 1,200 | Up to 240 s at 720p or 600 s at 480p |
| Ultra | 8,645 | Up to 1,700 s at 720p or 4,300 s at 480p |
| Teams | 1,200 per seat, pooled at team level | Not listed as seconds |

### Pro, Ultra or Teams: where the break-even sits

Ultra costs about four times as much as Pro each month for about 7.2 times the credits. CapCut's help center gives $4.99 per 100 credits, as a one-time pack, for example. On that example, Pro plus 11 packs comes to $74.88 for a month with 2,300 credits by our arithmetic, and a twelfth pack pushes the total past what Ultra costs. So the threshold is clear: regularly above about 2,300 credits a month, Ultra beats Pro plus packs; below 1,200, Pro alone covers you. Spiky use changes this, because packs held in reserve outlast subscription credits, which expire at the end of their grant period.

Teams is the third route. CapCut's US pricing page lists Teams at $12.49 per seat a month billed monthly for the default 2 seats, which is $24.98 a month billed monthly for 2 seats by our arithmetic, with 1,200 credits per seat pooled at team level, so 2,400 a month. The page calls that figure reference only; our [CapCut pricing guide](/articles/capcut-pricing) covers other seat counts. That sum equals Pro plus one pack, which buys only 1,300 credits, and ten packs on top of it still stay under Ultra up to 3,400 credits (the packs stay with the member who buys them; only the 2,400 plan credits are pooled). The catch: Teams needs at least two seats and is bought by the Team Owner.

The cost of each generation appears before you confirm it, which makes a single month on Pro the cheapest way to measure your real use. CapCut's US pricing page also has a Yearly tab, but like the monthly figures it is labelled reference-only and CapCut runs time-limited yearly offers, so we don't quote a yearly price; check the Yearly tab after you sign in. Budget on the credits you actually burn, not on a model's best-case allowance, because retries and abandoned drafts spend credits too.

> ⚠ **Subscription credits vanish at plan end:** CapCut subscription credits never roll over and expire the moment the plan ends; after cancelling they work only to the end of the paid cycle, so spend them first.

## Captions and voices: the AI most people actually use

CapCut says auto captions, AutoCut, voice filter and text to speech were its most used AI features in 2025. Auto captions run on Web, Desktop and Mobile, and they are free to start on CapCut Web, though some caption features may need Pro. You pick the spoken language from 20+ options and can add a second language for bilingual captions. The help center states no fixed accuracy rate. Recognition is recommended for up to about 15 minutes per pass, so split longer footage into parts of 10 minutes or less.

Only auto-generated captions export, and only as SRT or TXT; manually typed text does not. Importing a subtitle file works on Desktop and Web only, and Web accepts .srt files alone, though imported files skip the language list. Batch editing corrects, restyles or translates many recognized lines at once on all three surfaces, while Auto Lyrics, which captions songs, is mobile-only as of January 2026.

Text to speech works on text layers, processed in the cloud, on Web, Desktop and Mobile. CapCut says it offers 200+ voices, sortable by gender, age, style and language, with speed, pitch and tone controls. Where available, you can clone your own voice by recording a few prompted sentences. The browser tool needs no card and exports AAC, FLAC, MP3 or WAV. Premium voiceovers draw on credits. CapCut's text-to-speech page says generated speech can be used commercially, subject to its terms, so check those terms before a voice goes into an ad.

> 💡 **Keep an SRT of every caption pass:** Only auto-generated captions export, as SRT or TXT. Export the file once recognition is clean, and you can re-import it on Desktop or Web for a new cut.

## Which device does what

The AI layer is not the same on every screen. As of December 2025, CapCut's help center says the mobile app has no AI image generation; AI Design runs on CapCut Online and CapCut Desktop 7.7.0 or later [4]. Auto Cut, which trims clips to beats, pauses or a text prompt, runs on Mobile and Desktop but not on the web. Lip Sync is a desktop feature. Video generation is broader: CapCut lists Seedance 2.5 on Desktop, Seedance 1.5 Pro on mobile and desktop, and Seedance 2.0 on iPad.

CapCut for iPad is a Beta that is not in the US App Store before its official launch, so US users work in CapCut Online or the iPhone app in compatibility mode. AI Design has one weakness everywhere: it cannot reliably render readable text inside images, so add headlines afterwards with the Text tool. Uploads to AI features are capped at 10 images per request, 10 MB each.

## Labels, rights and what to keep out of prompts

Everything CapCut generates is marked. Its AI output carries visible AI labels, invisible watermarks and C2PA Content Credentials, and CapCut blocks prompts or source material that break its policies. At the Seedance 2.0 launch it also restricted videos made from images or videos containing real faces. For a brand, the labels mean generated footage will not pass as filmed footage. Plan your disclosures around that.

Check the rights before generated material goes into an ad. Templates and materials labelled Commercial Use can be used commercially, and CapCut's Terms of Service as served (last updated June 9, 2020) grant a personal, non-commercial license to the services. On data, CapCut's US Privacy Policy (last updated April 15, 2026) lists training machine-learning models among the uses of user information and lists no opt-out for that use. CapCut advises against uploading IDs, financial, medical, confidential or children's data to its AI features; our [CapCut safety guide](/articles/is-capcut-safe) covers the rest.

## FAQ

**What does CapCut Ultra add besides more credits?**

CapCut's pricing page says Ultra includes everything in Pro plus exclusive AI features, without itemising them, and 1 TB of storage. Check the plan card after sign-in before paying for those features.

**Can a CapCut team share AI credits?**

In CapCut Teams, subscription credits are shared at team level, while activity credits and purchased credits stay with each person. Expired credits are removed permanently.

**Is there a CapCut Pro trial for testing the AI tools?**

A 7-day Pro trial exists in selected regions for new users who never had Pro, and it includes AI tools with subscription credits. On the web it needs a payment method and charges when it ends, and in the mobile app the store account is charged after 7 days, unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends. Windows users who never had Pro may also get the trial on PC; it converts to a paid subscription unless cancelled before it ends, so check the billing period shown at checkout.

**Does a gifted CapCut membership include AI credits?**

Usually not. CapCut's help center says gifted or promotional memberships give core Pro editing features but do not automatically include AI credits or extra cloud storage.

## The bottom line

CapCut AI is strongest as a bundle: Seedance, Seedream and Seed Audio feeding a real editor, with captions and voices that are free to start. The cost lives in credits, not in the plan name. Pro's 1,200 monthly credits suit occasional generation, Ultra beats Pro plus packs only above roughly 2,300 credits a month, and a two-seat Teams plan pools 2,400 credits for a team that can use them. Generate images on Web or Desktop, not on the phone, and check the Commercial Use label before anything goes into an ad.
