## Free, Pro or paid: the three kinds of CapCut template

CapCut templates are ready-made edits where you swap in your own clips, photos and text, and free templates cost nothing to use. The catch sits in a small badge. A template marked with the Pro icon needs a CapCut Pro subscription to edit or export, and CapCut sells no pay-per-use unlock for a single Pro template [1]. So the verdict is simple. Free templates cover casual posts on any device, Pro pays off if you keep reaching for badged designs, and paid creator templates are a separate purchase made in the phone app.

CapCut's US pricing page lists Free at $0 and Pro at $19.99 a month billed monthly per account, with all premium templates included in Pro [2]. Those figures are for reference only, because the final price, taxes and offers appear after sign-in and can differ by region, device and account, as our [CapCut pricing guide](/articles/capcut-pricing) explains. The third kind, the paid creator template, works differently. Its creator sets the price, the payment page shows the final figure, and the charge runs through the App Store or Google Play rather than a CapCut wallet. A one-time purchase unlocks that draft, while an active subscription lets you use Edit More on paid templates without limit.

A free template today can be a paid one next month. On CapCut Web, most premium templates come from independent designers or studios who control their pricing, and CapCut can also convert popular, high-quality templates to paid on its own. Projects you already started from a template stay editable when its status changes. CapCut treats purchases as virtual goods: it gives no refund if a template you bought later drops in price, and any refund request follows Apple's or Google's policy. AI credits are another route into some premium templates, with the cost shown before you confirm. On Teams, brand and team-only templates come with the seat and vanish the moment a member leaves.

> 💡 **Check the badge before editing:** On CapCut Online a Pro template shows a purple Pro badge on its thumbnail, and the export panel shows a Paid Template label. Spot it before you spend time filling the slots.

## Phone, web and desktop are not equal

The mobile app is the real home of CapCut templates. It carries the full gallery with search, opens templates straight from TikTok links and the Use template in CapCut button, and gets new and trending templates first. Desktop often receives them weeks or months later, or never. On a phone, the Template tab can be missing entirely if your region or app version doesn't support it yet. CapCut also tests features on subsets of users, and its own example is 10% of US users, so two phones side by side can show different galleries.

CapCut Online, the web editor, offers a smaller curated gallery with search. It shows editorial-approved or evergreen picks with no personalized feed, no community or TikTok templates, and no way to copy a template link. Paid creator templates can't be browsed or bought on web or desktop as of January 2026, though templates you already bought open there through synced projects on the same account. Template exports on the web render in the cloud and need a stable connection of at least 10 Mbps throughout. A 9:16 TikTok preset may lock the export at 1080p.

CapCut Desktop has no template search at all. It offers a few built-in official templates, can't browse TikTok templates and has no field for pasting a template link. TikTok anchor-point templates are the partial exception: they work only partly on Desktop, and only when launched from TikTok Web. Some templates are designed for mobile only and won't open on the desktop app. Others synced from a phone may show a single static frame, although the exported video still plays correctly if you finished the project on mobile. If you live on a laptop, plan to pick and fill templates on the phone or the web, then polish the rest of the edit on Desktop.

| Template task | Mobile app | CapCut Online (web) | CapCut Desktop |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browse and search | Full gallery, search | Smaller curated gallery, search | No search, a few built-in templates |
| TikTok and community templates | Yes | No | No gallery; anchor-point templates partly, via TikTok Web |
| Open a template from a link | Yes | No | No |
| Browse and buy paid creator templates | Yes | No, bought ones open via sync | No, bought ones open via sync |
| Publish a template | Yes, approved creators | Export, then publish from the app | Partial, some versions need the app |
| Post a remake | Yes | No | No |

> ⚠ **Remakes under review have no link:** While a remake is under review, CapCut can't generate a shareable link for it. Copies you already exported to your camera roll or social accounts are not affected.

## Getting a clean export without the CapCut watermark

CapCut doesn't stamp exports by itself. The watermark on a template video almost always comes from the short ending clip with the CapCut logo that most templates append, on web, desktop and mobile alike [3]. Scroll to the end of the timeline, select that clip and delete it before you export. Some templates also hide a logo overlay inside a layer, which you remove or replace the same way. Check every text box as well, since each one has a maximum character limit and long product names can get cut off.

The second source of a watermark is any Pro-marked asset. A premium effect, filter, transition or sticker inside an otherwise free template blocks the export or watermarks it until you subscribe or remove it, and you should reselect the cover if its frame uses one. On desktop, a paid template shows a lock icon next to the resolution options. Even the creator of a monetized Pro template needs an active Pro subscription to export it without a watermark. CapCut lists 4K and 60 fps export among Pro features, and Desktop locks both for non-Pro users. After Pro ends, drafts stay editable, but a draft with paid templates, effects or music needs Pro again to export. Our guide to [CapCut's free plan](/articles/is-capcut-free) covers the other free limits.

> 💡 **Free up space before exporting:** On mobile, keep more than 1 GB of storage free and drop to 1080p if a template export fails. Desktop exports run locally and need 2 to 3 GB free on the export drive.

## Can you use a CapCut template commercially?

Only if it says so. CapCut's legal page allows commercial use, such as social content for a business or brand promotion, only for templates and materials expressly labeled Commercial Use [4]. Text panels include a Commercial Use filter that hides free or non-commercial fonts and templates when switched on, which is the fastest way to stay inside that line. The CapCut Terms of Service as served (last updated 9 Jun 2020) describe the license to the services and CapCut materials as personal and non-commercial, and license no rights to music. Sale and partner pages that promise commercial use of all assets do not override the label rule.

Music is the weak spot. If CapCut has no agreement with a track's rights holder, it must remove or mute that sound in videos and templates. Audio added on CapCut Web is not drawn from TikTok's licensed library, so TikTok can mute it. On mobile, pick tracks marked Commercial use allowed, or tracks labeled Use TikTok sound for TikTok posts. A remake belongs to you to use, share or monetize, but only within the Terms and third-party asset licenses. Our [CapCut for TikTok guide](/articles/capcut-for-tiktok) covers the posting side.

## Publishing your own templates and handling remakes

Publishing is gated three ways. You need approval as a template creator with access to the Creator Center on the Me page; your region must have publishing enabled, with the US, Brazil and parts of Southeast Asia among them; and you publish from the mobile app, through Post and then Publish as Template, adding a title, category, tags and a cover image. Web projects are exported and submitted through the app, and some desktop versions need the app to finish. A template must keep at least one editable placeholder. A fully rendered video doesn't qualify.

Rejections follow patterns. Templates with AI-generated elements such as AI Script, AI Portrait or Text-to-Video can't be published unless you're in an official test group. Music from outside CapCut's library, watermarked stock footage and brand logos can trigger an automatic rejection. Review usually takes 6 to 24 hours, often 48 to 72 hours or longer at peaks, with no fast track. External audio, custom fonts or recognizable visuals add a manual check of 24 to 48 hours or more. Replaceable clips can be set only on CapCut Mobile and Web as of December 2025, not on Desktop. When you set them, filters, motion graphics and audio stay locked unless you enable text or audio editing.

Templates can earn money. The US Template Creator Program is open only to US creators and pays by template performance: level 1 or 2 accounts are invited to Explorer, Emerging needs level 3 or 4, and Elite needs level 5 or higher, adding cash rewards, CapCut merchandise and a free Pro subscription. Monetization is switched on per template or for all templates in Creator Center. CapCut may also convert high-engagement templates automatically through its Template Promotion Program; you can opt out on mobile under Me, Creator Tools, Template Monetization.

Using someone else's public template creates a remake. On mobile, the Post as Remake toggle at export is on by default. Switch it off, or duplicate the project with Save as New Project to drop the remake flag. Remakes can't be hidden. Deleting one is permanent and unrecoverable. Only the mobile app posts remakes, while desktop and web exports stay private and local. Posting a remake also needs a signed-in account that meets the age requirement, usually 18+ depending on region.

## Why templates disappear or lose their sound

CapCut removes older or low-engagement AI effects and seasonal templates without notice, and an author can delete a template or make it private, which leaves it unusable for everyone else. A removed effect can't be reapplied even if you favorited it. Locally saved projects still render, and videos you already exported are unaffected. Licensed music is less forgiving: CapCut doesn't guarantee permanent access, and a removed track disappears even from saved projects. The fix is routine. Export finished videos promptly and keep local audio files for long-running projects. New AI templates also need recent app versions, so update before assuming one is gone.

## FAQ

**Can I use CapCut templates on an iPad in the US?**

CapCut for iPad is a Beta that is not in the US App Store before its official launch. CapCut's help center suggests CapCut Online in Safari or Chrome on the iPad, or the iPhone app, which runs in a scaled-up compatibility mode.

**How do I send a template project to someone else?**

On mobile, use Share and then Send Project, which generates a CapCut project file. CapCut Web does not support exporting templates as standalone files.

**Why does a template play in slow motion?**

A template designed for 60 fps can look slow if your project frame rate is lower. Preview lag does not always carry into the exported video, so check the export before rebuilding anything.

**Why can't I see a template a friend used?**

Some templates are limited to certain regions and some require sign-in, a verified account or a minimum age, often 18+. Trending and paid templates may also be available only in select regions such as the US, India and Brazil.

## The bottom line

CapCut templates are free for most everyday edits, provided you delete the logo outro and steer clear of anything with a Pro icon. Pro earns its place when badged templates, effects or 4K exports become a habit, and paid creator templates remain a phone-only purchase. Work on mobile if templates drive your content, since Desktop has no search and the web gallery is curated. For any business use, filter for the Commercial Use label, choose cleared music and export finished videos before CapCut retires the material they depend on.
