---

Descript Rooms is a browser recording studio built into Descript: up to 10 people join from a link, each one records locally in up to 4K on their own machine, and the files land in your project already transcribed as separate tracks. Every plan includes it, Free too. The real limits are time and roles. Rooms hours per Drive run from 2 a month on Free to 25 on Business, and the Control Room for silent producers starts at Hobbyist ($16 per person a month billed annually). **Pick Creator if you record more than about five hours a month.**

**10** — Maximum participants in one Descript Rooms session, on every plan.

- **4 hours** — Maximum length of one Rooms recording session
- **7 days** — Window to recover a stalled full-quality upload
- **2-25 h** — Rooms hours per Drive a month, Free to Business

## What Rooms includes on each plan

Rooms has two meters, and both apply at once. The first is the plan's Rooms recording time per Drive. The second is the media-minute pool, because every Rooms recording counts toward it like any upload. A session is counted once by its length, not per participant: a one-hour interview with five people uses 60 minutes.[1] The table shows what each plan gives you for a recording workflow.

| Plan | Price per person a month | Rooms hours per Drive a month | Media hours per Editor a month | Control Room slots |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 2 | 1 | None |
| Hobbyist | $16 billed annually, $24 monthly | 5 | 10 | 3 |
| Creator | $24 billed annually, $35 monthly | 15 | 30 | 3 |
| Business | $50 billed annually, $65 monthly | 25 | 40 | 10 |

Read the Free row carefully. Its single media hour runs out before the two Rooms hours do, so a Free account records about one hour a month in practice. A weekly one-hour show needs four or five Rooms hours a month, which fits Hobbyist's 5 exactly, with nothing to spare in a five-week month. A weekly 90-minute show needs six to seven and a half hours, by our arithmetic, so it already belongs on Creator, whose 15 hours cover ten such sessions. Unused time resets each month, and the plan rules sit in our [Descript pricing guide](/articles/descript-pricing).

## Prepare the machines before anyone joins

Most failed sessions start with a guest's setup, not with Descript. Rooms runs on a desktop or laptop in Chrome, Edge, Arc, Firefox, Safari or Opera. It does not run on phones: Descript has blocked mobile joins since May 2026, and a recording made by working around the block may fail with no way to recover it. Descript asks for at least 10 Mbps, recommends 20 Mbps, and wants 30 Mbps of upload for a 4K feed. It also recommends 20 GB of free disk space, because low disk space can stall uploads or lose files. Send guests a short checklist the day before:

- Use a laptop or desktop, never a phone or tablet.
- Wear wired headphones; they record at 48 kHz, while a Bluetooth headset used as mic and speaker forces lower-quality audio.
- Avoid office, school or bank networks; Descript advises against managed networks, and proxies that inspect SSL traffic can break audio and video.
- Close other video apps, and on Windows switch the power profile off Balanced or Best power efficiency.

When guests join, Rooms asks whether they wear headphones. Choosing headphones turns echo cancellation off; choosing speakers turns it on. That one answer decides how clean the track is, so tell guests which to pick. Windows guests need one more warning. Descript does not support 4K screen recording from Windows, its troubleshooting page says 4K recording on Windows is not currently supported, and high resolutions there often lower the frame rate. Plan on 1080p for them.

> 💡 **Start the Room inside the project:** Rooms are tied to Drives, so a Room started from the Drive view saves into a new project at the Drive root. Start it from the project if the files must land there.

## Set up the Room and pick the right roles

You start a Room from the Drive view or from inside a project through Record, then Record with others. **Rooms belong to Drives, not folders**, so a recording started from the Drive view goes into a new project at the Drive root or default location, even if you were looking at a folder. Start from inside the project if the files must land there. A waiting room holds new arrivals on a hold screen until you admit them, or you can turn on auto-approval in Room Settings and skip that step.

Five roles decide who is recorded and who can press record. Host, Co-host and Guest appear on tape; Producer and Viewer do not. Only the Host, a Co-host or a Producer can start recording.[2] Every invite link defaults to the Guest role, and role-specific links for Co-host, Producer and Viewer are a paid-plan feature. Guests and Producers do not need to be Drive members, so an outside producer costs no Editor seat.

### The Control Room and its limits

The Control Room is where producers sit off camera. It holds up to 3 producers and viewers on Hobbyist, Creator and the education plan, and up to 10 on Business and Enterprise, a cap Descript raised from 3 in June 2026.[3] Viewers wait in a separate Viewer Room, enter muted, talk only through text chat and still count toward the limit. Watch the overflow rule. Once the Control Room is full, anyone arriving on a Producer or Viewer link joins as a Guest, which means a camera, a microphone and a recorded track you did not plan for.

## Run the recording

Before you press record, check three settings. Video quality goes from 480p up to 4K if the camera supports it, at a variable frame rate up to 30 fps, in 16:9 or 1:1. Audio records as AAC at 48 kHz, or as separate lossless WAV files per participant if you enable them, which needs Chrome, Edge or Arc on the host side. Background noise reduction is off by default, and hosts or producers can switch it on for everyone. A Bandwidth saver mode drops incoming video when a connection struggles.

During the session, producers can use push-to-talk to speak to everyone or to one person without being recorded. Push-to-talk needs a paid plan. If a guest has no headphones and echo cancellation is off, the producer's voice can bleed into that guest's track, and the guest can silence it with the red hand button. Hosts, Co-hosts and Producers can also leave timestamped comments that guests never see; they appear in the project afterwards, and comments work on every plan, Free included.

Two people can share screens at once, and both shares are recorded; shared audio arrives as its own track named after the sharer. In audio-only mode the shared screen's video is skipped but its audio is kept. Hosts and Co-hosts get a teleprompter, started by hand, and live captions can run for everyone on stage. One session stops at 4 hours. Longer sessions need a second recording, saved in the same project. Staying in the Room after recording starts counts as consent.

> ⚠ **A full Control Room adds a guest:** When the Control Room or Viewer Room is full, a person using a Producer or Viewer link joins as a Guest and is recorded. Producer and Viewer slots: 3 on Hobbyist and Creator, 10 on Business and Enterprise.

## When a recording breaks: backups and recovery

Rooms keeps two copies of everyone. The primary file records locally on each participant's device and uploads progressively during the session. Alongside it, Descript captures a lower-quality browser backup per participant, as separate audio and video tracks, which appears sooner and sits under Files, Recordings, Room, Backups. Uploads keep going after a guest leaves, but only while the tab stays open, so ask guests to wait until their upload finishes.

If a guest's upload stalls, the full-quality file is still recoverable for 7 days: the guest rejoins the Room or reopens Descript, and recovery starts on its own.[4] It works only in the same browser or app used for recording, so a guest who switches laptops cannot recover. Recovered files go to Project files, not into the script, and partial files carry a (partial) tag in their name. You swap the recovered file into the sequence yourself.

When uploads finish, Descript builds a sequence for you: it transcribes the session, puts each person on a separate track and applies multicam layouts, so the speaker stays on screen without manual cuts. Our [Descript for podcasters guide](/articles/descript-for-podcasters) covers what to do with that sequence next, from cleanup to publishing.

## Scheduling, async guests and the SquadCast move

Since August 2026 you can schedule a Room for a future time and add it to a Google Calendar or Outlook invite. It does not sync with calendar apps afterwards, so a moved meeting means updating the invite yourself. A scheduled Room can record without the host. When you schedule it, you choose who may start recording: the host only, Drive members, anyone with project access, or anyone with the link, the last of which stops working after the scheduled end time. Role-specific links do not work in scheduled Rooms, and the save location cannot be changed after scheduling.

Async recording requests let a guest record alone, with an optional teleprompter script, and submit straight to your project; they are Enterprise only and give one take each. SquadCast, Descript's older remote studio, is still included with a Descript subscription. Descript says Rooms will eventually replace it, but no sunset date is set, and SquadCast Shows do not transfer to Rooms. New shows should start in Rooms. For how Rooms compares with a dedicated studio, read our [Descript vs Riverside comparison](/articles/descript-vs-riverside).

> 💡 **Schedule with the right starter:** A scheduled Room can record without the host. Choose who may start it (host, Drive members, project access or anyone with the link) when you schedule, because the save location is fixed afterwards.

## FAQ

**Does Rooms record lossless audio?**

Yes, if the host enables lossless audio files: each participant then gets a separate WAV file. It needs Chrome, Edge or Arc; Rooms cannot record MP3, so export MP3 from the editor instead.

**Is Rooms transcription billed separately?**

No. Rooms sessions are imported and transcribed automatically at no extra cost; only the recording length counts toward the Drive's media minutes.

**What happens to my SquadCast shows?**

SquadCast is still included with a Descript subscription and has no sunset date, but its Shows do not transfer into Rooms. Keep old shows in SquadCast and start new ones in Rooms.

**Can I record more than 10 people?**

Not in one Room: every plan caps a session at 10 participants. Descript's own page points larger webinars to Zoom.

> ⚠ **Phone guests cannot be recovered:** Rooms blocks mobile joins, and Descript says recordings made by bypassing the block may fail with no way to recover the session.

## The bottom line

Rooms is a low-cost way to get local, per-person tracks into a text-based editor, because it ships with every plan and drops the session into a transcribed sequence. Its limits are concrete: 10 people, 4 hours a session, no phones, and recording time that counts against two meters. Free is enough to try one interview. A weekly one-hour show fits Hobbyist with no slack, longer or more frequent shows belong on Creator, and teams that need more than three off-camera producers need Business. Prepare guests' machines, assign roles on purpose, and keep the 7-day recovery window in mind.
