Figma AI is not one feature. It is three ways of working that share one budget: a conversational agent inside files,
Figma Make for building apps from prompts, and a set of single-purpose tools across Design, FigJam, Slides, Sites and
Buzz. All of them run on AI credits. And the setting that decides whether Figma trains on your content is on by default
for small teams.

This guide covers what each part does, who gets it, what it costs and how to control it, from Figma's own pages read
on 9 October 2026.

## The three ways to use AI in Figma

Figma's guide names them: the Figma agent, a conversational tool you collaborate with in files; Figma Make, a
prompt-to-app tool; and individual AI tools, focused features built for specific needs [103].

Each has different access rules. They matter. The agent is available on all plans, Make fully only on Full seats, and the individual
tools only on paid plans [103].

> 💡 **undefined:** Set per-user credit limits before enabling pay-as-you-go.

## The Figma agent

You describe what you want in plain language, and the agent generates designs, makes edits, applies your design
system, gives feedback and handles busywork, directly on the canvas [103]. Users with Full seats and edit
access can ask it to edit; View, Dev and Collab seats can chat with it without making edits [103].

The agent in Figma Design moved from open beta to general availability on 6 October 2026, and from that date it
consumes AI credits [96].

## What the agent costs

Figma's examples for the agent: changing the fonts in a design costs about 30 credits or more, summarizing what is on
the canvas about 100, and generating a five-screen mobile checkout flow about 300 [94]. Usage varies with the
prompt's complexity, the actions taken and the context attached [96].

The agent in FigJam and Slides is in closed beta and does not consume credits during the beta [94]. Organization
and Enterprise admins can still download a CSV of beta-period usage for the agent and Weave tools; new data stopped on
6 October 2026 [96].

> 💡 **undefined:** Use the MCP server with your own coding agent to avoid spending Figma credits.

## Plugins and shaders by prompt

You can ask the agent to build reusable plugins or shaders for your workflow [103]. On Organization and
Enterprise, any member can publish such a generative plugin internally [225].

Figma's AI page frames this as custom creative tools the whole team can use [24].

## Figma Make

Make turns prompts and existing designs into functional prototypes and web apps that can be published [104].
Full functionality is for Full seats on paid plans; other seats and Starter can explore it [103].

Make's credit cost depends on model, task and context; Figma's examples run from about 30 credits for a font change to
100 or more for an app from scratch [94]. Our separate Figma Make guide covers it in detail. Start there for Make.

> ⚠ **undefined:** Seat credits cannot be shared between people.

## Skills for the agent

Skills are reusable sets of context and instructions that the agent reads with each prompt, such as your design-system
rules, naming conventions and quality standards [136]. You can write your own or use skills from the Figma
Community [136].

Figma's credit guide for the agent names three costly patterns: a vague first prompt, context you do not need, and a
long chat whose whole history is carried forward [136].

## The individual AI tools

The tool list covers text (rewrite, translate, shorten, adjust tone), images (make image, remove background, expand,
isolate or erase objects, vectorize, boost resolution, edit with a prompt), design chores (replace content, rename
layers, add interactions), AI search, and FigJam and Slides features such as generating boards and diagrams, sorting and
summarizing stickies, turning a board into a deck and drafting presenter notes [103].

These tools are available on Professional, Organization and Enterprise [103].

> ⚠ **undefined:** Undoing an AI action does not refund credits.

## FigJam AI

FigJam's AI generates templates for team syncs, brainstorms, retros, timelines and org charts from a prompt, sorts
stickies into groups, summarizes them, and includes Jambot, a ChatGPT-powered assistant for brainstorming and code
[10]. Sticky summaries are free; generating templates and diagrams costs 2 to 24 credits a prompt [94].

The FigJam AI page still says Figma's AI features are free while in beta and will become paid at general availability
[10]. That has already happened: Figma moved its AI out of beta in December 2025 and enforced seat credit limits from
18 March 2026 [6].

## Image tools on the free plan

Figma's pages disagree about Starter. The image help article says image tools are available on paid plans and on
Starter in Figma Design [135]; the Starter overview lists no AI image tools [129].

When you make an image, you pick a model and can add a reference image; image tasks can run while you keep designing
elsewhere [135].

## Who gets which tools

Every seat type can try AI tools in drafts [103], and Figma's AI FAQ confirms AI features are available in drafts
for all users [102]. Enabling AI for a team turns it on across Design, FigJam, Slides, Buzz, Sites and Make at once
[102]. In shared team files, access depends on seat type and product,
so a Collab seat gets AI in FigJam and Slides but not in Figma Design [103]. AI tools in Figma Buzz are open to
everyone while Buzz is in beta [103].

On Starter, most standalone AI tools need a paid plan, but most can be reached through the agent [102].

## Education and Government

Higher-education and bootcamp Education users get AI tools and Make; K-12 users do not [103]. Education users
receive 3,000 credits a month and cannot buy more [97].

Figma for Government includes Make, but other Figma AI features are not currently available there [103], and it
disables content training automatically [133].

## AI credits per seat

| Seat | Starter | Professional | Organization | Enterprise |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Full | 500 | 3,000 | 3,500 | 4,250 |
| Dev, Collab, View | — | 500 | 500 | 500 |

Starter and View seats also have a daily cap of 150 credits [94]. Credits belong to one person, reset monthly,
do not roll over, and cannot be shared [94].

## What the fixed-price tools cost

Some AI is free: AI search, renaming layers, and summarizing, clustering or updating stickies in FigJam [94].
Generating FigJam templates and diagrams costs 2 to 24 credits a prompt [94].

Image tools have fixed costs: removing a background 1 to 5 credits, vectorizing 2 to 5, and boosting resolution,
erasing, isolating or expanding 5 to 10 [94]. Making or editing an image costs 2 credits with ChatGPT Images 2.0 and
up to 16 with Nano Banana 2 [94]. Adding interactions costs 20 [94].

## AI search

AI search finds components and designs from a description, an image or a canvas selection, and searches Community files
too; an Assets tab search finds components without their exact names [238]. It is available in Figma Design and
Slides on paid plans [238].

It costs nothing: AI search is one of the free features in the credit table [94]. Use it freely.

## Features come and go

Not every AI feature lasts. AI text suggestions, which completed text strings as you typed and launched at Config 2025,
have been retired from Figma Design [239].

The credit table also warns that costs per feature may change as models are optimized or new ones arrive [94].

## Weave tools

Weave tools are prebuilt creative workflows inside Figma Design that edit images, vectors and video [24]. Each has
a fixed cost per run: most cost 18 to 21 credits, some 55, a sticker pack 78 and generating product variations 110
[94].

Weave tools used in Figma consume Figma AI credits; work done directly in Figma Weave uses a separate Weave credit pool
[94]. They began consuming credits on 6 October 2026 [96].

## Budgeting for a team

By our arithmetic, five Professional Full seats share nothing but each hold 3,000 credits, 15,000 in all. At Figma's
estimates that is about 150 from-scratch Make apps or 50 agent-built checkout flows a month across the team.

The constraint is per person. Credits do not pool. One heavy user can run out while colleagues have credits left, because seat credits cannot
be transferred [94].

## Buying more credits

When seat credits run out, admins can buy a pooled credit subscription, enable pay-as-you-go up to a spending limit, or
both [95]. Seat credits are spent first, then the pool, then pay-as-you-go [95]. On Professional the
subscription is month-to-month; on Organization and Enterprise it is annual [95].

On 25 August 2026 Figma doubled the credits in Professional add-ons and raised them 1.6 times on Organization and
Enterprise at the same price [96]. The price per credit is shown only in the admin dashboard [96]. Ask for it in writing.

## The October offer

From 6 to 27 October 2026, Professional teams that have never bought an AI credit add-on get 25% off it for the rest of
the billing cycle and the next full cycle [58]. It then renews monthly at the standard rate until canceled
[58].

## Who owns AI output

Under Figma's AI terms, prompts and outputs, including code, are Customer Content, and the customer keeps all rights in
them [56]. Output is not verified by Figma, Figma gives no warranty for it, and the customer is responsible for
checking it [56].

The AI terms in force since 24 June 2026 list six earlier versions back to 26 June 2024 [56]. Terms that change
that often are worth rereading at each renewal. Seven versions in two years.

## When credits hit zero

The agent, Make and other AI tools share one budget, so a user who spent their credits in Make may see zero left for the
agent [96]. The AI balance in the file menu shows remaining credits and the reset date [96].

Users can request more from an admin; the request changes nothing by itself, and the admin decides whether to raise a
limit, buy credits or wait for the reset [95].

## How the August change shows on invoices

When Figma raised the credits in its add-ons on 25 August 2026, subscribers' invoices gained adjustment lines that move
them to a larger package at the same net cost [96]. Pay-as-you-go spending limits did not change; the same budget
simply buys more credits [96].

## Admin controls

Admins can give each person full access to paid credits, a custom monthly limit, or none; every user starts with full
access [143]. On Enterprise, credits can be set aside per billing group [95].

Admins can also switch AI off for a team or organization; users then lose Make and the image tools [94]. Enabling
AI and allowing content training are separate settings [99].

## Plugins, shaders and the canvas

The agent can build generative plugins and shader effects from a description [103] [24]. From outside Figma,
coding agents connected through the MCP server can write working designs to the canvas, which Figma's Dev Mode page
calls write to canvas [23].

Both blur the line between using AI and building tools with it, which is why admins may want to review internal plugins
[225].

## Reporting

Admins see who used credits and who hit their limits in the AI credits dashboard [95]. Historic usage and CSV
exports are only on Organization and Enterprise, reporting by feature is not available, and Enterprise adds an AI Usage
API with up to a year of per-user, per-day data [95].

## Which models power it

Figma says its AI uses several models, including off-the-shelf foundation models and fine-tuned models [25]. In
Make you can choose models, among them Claude Opus, Gemini Flash and OpenAI's GPT-5.6 [106] [86].

Figma says it does not permit third-party model providers to train their own models on customer data, and that providers
such as OpenAI store data temporarily or not at all [25].

## Training on your content

Figma trains its own models on customer content when Content training is on. It is on by default for Starter and
Professional teams and off by default for Organization and Enterprise [99]. Figma says it de-identifies content and
redacts sensitive information so models learn general design patterns rather than your ideas [25].

Turning the setting off stops new content and edits from being used [56]. For client work on Professional, turn
it off before the first upload. Do it today.

## Accuracy and responsibility

Figma's own guidance warns that AI results may contain inaccuracies, omissions or misleading outcomes, and should be
treated as a general reference rather than fact [103]. It asks users to tell others when they present
AI-generated output [103].

## AI in Slides, Sites and Buzz

Slides uses AI to shorten, lengthen or change the tone of text and to draft presenter notes, and can turn a FigJam board
into a deck outline [16]. Sites can create code layers with AI, which the AI FAQ says is included even on Starter
[102]. In Buzz, AI tools sit in the inline toolbar and are open to everyone during the beta [102]
[103].

All of them draw on the same monthly credit balance [136].

## Figma's productivity claim

In August 2026 Figma published a randomized controlled trial of 100 participants: design work was 20% faster and 16%
easier with Figma Make, and product managers' tasks 23% faster and 37% easier [69].

It is the strongest evidence Figma offers for its AI, and it measures Make only, not the agent or image tools.

## The MCP server: AI from outside Figma

Figma's MCP server lets external agents such as Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code read design context and, with some
tools, write to the canvas [120]. It is limited by tool calls rather than credits: 20 a month on Starter, View and
Collab, 200 a day on Professional Dev and Full seats, 600 on Enterprise [155].

For teams that already pay for a coding agent, this is a way to use AI with Figma without spending Figma credits. Limits still apply.

## What users say about Figma AI

In our 100-review Trustpilot sample, 15 reviews concern AI credits or Make, nearly all negative, mostly about credits
used up quickly or spent on fixing the AI's own mistakes [167]. One reviewer wrote that "Figma Make is fantastic, and
the AI feature is surprisingly powerful." [167]

The pattern matches Figma's own rules: costs are known after the prompt, and failed or undone actions are not refunded
[94].

## A rollout plan

Start with per-user limits for everyone and full access for two or three designers who will build with Make
[143]. Turn off content training if you hold client work [99]. Write a guidelines.md for Make and pick the
cheapest model that gives acceptable results [106].

After a month, read the dashboard, then decide between a credit subscription and pay-as-you-go with a cap
[95].

## FAQ

**Is Figma AI free?**

Every seat includes monthly AI credits: 500 on Starter and on Dev, Collab and View seats, and 3,000 to 4,250 on Full seats. Search, layer renaming and FigJam sticky summaries are free.

**Does Figma train AI on my designs?**

Only when Content training is on. It is on by default for Starter and Professional and off for Organization and Enterprise; admins can switch it off.

## Verdict

Figma AI is the broadest AI layer in any design tool we have reviewed, and the most expensive to predict. The free
features and the included seat credits are enough to learn it. Regular use needs a budget, per-user limits and a
decision on training, made before the first prompt rather than after the first surprise.
