# Figma Review 2026: The Design Standard, Sold by the Seat

> An evidence-based Figma review: the interface-design standard, priced per seat from US$16 a month, AI on a separate credit meter, content training on by default for small teams, and a narrow exit.

Figma is where most software interfaces are now drawn, argued over and handed to engineers. That is the
job it is built for, and it does that job better than anything else in our design category. The weaker side
is not the canvas. It is the way Figma is sold: by seat type rather than by product, with a second, unpublished
bill for AI, and with an exit that is narrower than the entrance.

Our composite score for Figma is 3.95, second in the design category behind Canva's 4.14. The gap is about
audience, not quality: our design rubric weights ease of use for people who are not designers, and Figma is a
professional tool. Every figure below comes from Figma's own pages, read for the United States on 9 October
2026, from its full help center, or from our arithmetic on them, labelled as ours.

## What Figma is

Figma is a browser-based design platform with a desktop app on top. One account and one file system hold
Figma Design, Dev Mode, FigJam, Figma Slides, Figma Make, Figma Draw and, in beta, Figma Sites, Figma Buzz and
Figma Motion [2]. Files are live documents: several people edit the same frame at the same time, and
viewers comment in place. The core is still Figma Design, the editor for screens, components and prototypes.

It is not a template shop for social posts. Figma Buzz now covers on-brand marketing assets [20], but
the product's center of gravity is product design and the handoff to code.

> 💡 **undefined:** Give Full seats only to people who edit designs.

## Who it is for, and who it is not for

Figma fits product designers, UX and UI teams, design-system owners, and the engineers and product managers
who work beside them. The seat model is built for that mix: designers on Full seats, developers on Dev seats,
everyone else on cheap Collab seats or free View seats [92].

It fits less well a solo marketer who needs a flyer by lunch. The learning curve is real, the free plan stops
at three team files, and the AI features are metered. For that buyer Canva, which we score separately, is the
simpler purchase [170].

## The four plans in brief

**Starter** is free and built, in Figma's words, for people who are working on personal projects or want to try
Figma products [129]. **Professional** is the entry paid plan for a professional or a small team, with
unlimited files and folders [128]. **Organization** adds multiple teams, organization-wide libraries,
shared fonts, branching and centralized administration [93]. **Enterprise** adds workspaces, SCIM seat
management, billing groups and the most advanced security settings [127].

Every list price is published on one page, Enterprise included [2]. That is rarer than it should be.

> 💡 **undefined:** Set seat approvals to manual before inviting anyone.

## Seats decide more than plans do

A Figma subscription is two choices: a plan, and a seat type for every person on it. Figma's billing guide
puts it plainly: cost is determined by your plan type and the number of Full, Dev, and Collab seats
[89].

The seats table shows what each one unlocks. Only a Full seat can edit Figma Design files. A Dev seat gets
full Dev Mode, FigJam and Slides. A Collab seat gets FigJam and Slides. A View seat, which is free, can view,
comment and run basic inspection [92]. Figma Make can be tried in drafts on Dev and Collab seats, but full
use needs a Full seat [92].

So a team of ten rarely needs ten Full seats. The question at checkout is who edits designs, who builds from
them, and who only watches.

## Starter: what free covers

Starter gives you one team with a single folder. Inside it you can keep three Figma Design or Sites files,
three FigJam files and three Slides files, and as many personal drafts as you like [129]. Version
history covers 30 days. There is no Dev Mode, no team library, no publishing in Sites, and no AI image tools
[129].

Collaboration is the catch. Drafts on Starter can be shared with unlimited viewers but do not support other
editors; real-time co-editing happens only in the three team files [153]. Starter users get 500 AI
credits a month, capped at 150 a day [94].

> 💡 **undefined:** Check the Content training toggle on Starter and Professional.

## Professional: the plan most teams buy

Professional is one team with unlimited files and folders, nested up to ten levels deep [128]. It adds
team libraries, unlimited version history, AI tools, FigJam voting, Sites publishing and template publishing in
Slides and Buzz [128]. Sharing gets finer controls: restricted folders, prototype-only links, viewer
restrictions and password protection [128].

The Full seat costs US$20 a month on monthly billing or US$16 a month billed annually, which is US$192 a
year [2]. Dev seats are US$15 or US$12, Collab seats US$5 or US$3 [2]. Each Full seat carries
3,000 AI credits a month; every other seat carries 500 [94].

## Organization and Enterprise

Organization is annual only, at US$55 a month per Full seat, US$25 per Dev seat and US$5 per Collab seat
[2]. It brings multiple teams, shared fonts, branching and merging, organization-wide design systems,
private plugins, SSO, domain capture and activity logs [93]. Code Connect, which maps design components to
real code components, starts here [93].

Enterprise is US$90 per Full seat, US$35 per Dev seat and US$5 per Collab seat, also annual [2]. It
adds workspaces, SCIM seat assignment, guest access controls, expiring public links and billing groups
[93]. Both plans invoice additions every three months [91].

> ⚠ **undefined:** Payments are non-refundable.

## Prices have moved

The archived pricing page from 6 November 2024 listed Professional at US$15 per Full seat a month,
Organization at US$45 and Enterprise at US$75 [4]. Today those figures are US$20, US$55 and US$90
[2]. By our arithmetic, that is a 33% rise on Professional, 22% on Organization and 20% on Enterprise.

Figma announced the change in December 2024: higher Full seat prices, a new seat model, and admin approval of
seat upgrades by default, taking effect at each customer's first renewal on or after 11 March 2025 [5].
In return, every paid seat gained FigJam and Slides [5].

## Figma Design, the core

The editor is why people pay. Components and variants keep a design system consistent; variables store
colors, numbers and strings, and modes switch whole themes at once [146]. Professional allows 10 modes per
collection, Organization 20, Enterprise unlimited through extended collections [93].

Prototyping goes further than linking screens. Paid plans add variables, expressions and conditional logic
inside prototypes, so a checkout flow can actually count items [93]. Video can sit inside prototypes on
paid plans too [93].

> ⚠ **undefined:** Seats added mid-year on annual Professional are billed monthly.

## Dev Mode and the MCP server

Dev Mode is a separate view for engineers: inspect properties, track which designs are ready for development,
compare changes and copy code [118]. Figma's Dev Mode page cites an HP design-systems lead and a claim that
90% of developers saw work-quality improvements [23].

The newer piece is the MCP server, which hands structured design context to coding agents such as Claude Code,
Cursor and VS Code [120]. Limits depend on plan and seat: Starter, View and Collab users get up to 20 tool
calls a month; Dev and Full seats get up to 200 a day on Professional and Organization and 600 on Enterprise
[155].

## FigJam and Figma Slides

FigJam is the whiteboard: sticky notes, diagrams, voting, timers and more than 300 templates, and Figma says it
is included with all seats on every plan [9]. Slides is a presentation tool that can switch into a design
mode with auto layout and layers, embed live prototypes and run polls [16].

Both were sold separately before March 2025. Folding them into every paid seat is the clearest gain the 2025
pricing change brought [5].

> ⚠ **undefined:** Prompt costs in Make are known only after the prompt runs.

## Figma Make

Figma Make turns prompts into working, code-backed prototypes and small apps. You can start from a design
system, attach frames or PDFs, and copy the result back onto the canvas to adjust details [19]. Make files
can be published to a figma.site address, with custom domains shared with Sites [101].

Make is where most of the credit spending happens. Figma's own examples put a font change at about 30 credits,
making a design interactive at about 75, and generating an app from scratch at about 100 or more [94].

Teams can feed Make their own design system through Make kits and npm packages [19]. On the Make page, an
Affirm product executive says an idea that took six weeks to see in action now takes a few hours [19]. That
is a vendor testimonial, not a measurement, but it describes the use case Make is priced for.

## Sites, Buzz, Draw and Motion

Figma Sites designs and publishes responsive websites, with a CMS, preset interactions and code layers
[18]. Professional plans can connect 10 custom domains; Organization and Enterprise have no cap
[101]. Sites remains in beta [3].

Buzz is for brand templates that marketers fill in, free while in beta on all seats [3]. Draw adds
illustration tools such as vector brushes and variable-width strokes [21]. Motion adds a timeline for
production-ready animation that developers can inspect in Dev Mode [22].

## AI credits: how the meter works

Every seat carries AI credits each month: 3,000 on a Professional Full seat, 3,500 on Organization, 4,250 on
Enterprise, and 500 on Dev, Collab and View seats and on Starter [94]. Seat credits belong to one person,
reset monthly, never roll over and cannot be shared [94].

When they run out, an admin can buy a pooled credit subscription, turn on pay-as-you-go up to a spending limit,
or both [95]. Seat credits are spent first, then the pool, then pay-as-you-go [95]. The rate for
extra credits is shown only in the admin dashboard [96].

## What a prompt costs

Some AI is free: search, layer renaming and FigJam sticky summaries [94]. Image tools cost a fixed amount,
from 1 to 16 credits per image depending on the tool and model [94]. Agentic features vary. Figma's
examples put a five-screen mobile checkout flow built by the Figma agent at about 300 credits or more
[94].

Two rules matter. You cannot see the cost of a prompt in Make or the agent before it runs, and undoing an AI
action does not refund its credits [94]. By our arithmetic, a Professional Full seat's 3,000 credits
cover roughly 30 from-scratch app generations a month at Figma's own estimate.

## Who trains on your files

Figma trains models on customer content when an admin setting called Content training is on. It is on by
default for Starter and Professional teams and off by default for Organization and Enterprise [99].
Turning it off stops new content and edits from being used, not content already used [56].

Figma for Government disables content training automatically [133]. If you are a freelancer on Professional
holding client files, this is the first setting to check.

## Integrations

The platform side is broad. There is a REST API, a plugin and widget platform, Code Connect, and the MCP server
[120]. Figma lists live embeds in Jira, Confluence [p1], Asana and Notion, apps for Slack, Microsoft Teams, Zoom
and Google Workspace, a Zapier connector, and FigJam diagrams generated from ChatGPT, Claude and Copilot
[35].

## The Education plan

Students and educators who pass verification get the Education plan free, with Professional features
[3]. Each Education user receives 3,000 AI credits a month, the same as a Professional Full seat, but cannot
buy more without moving to a paid team [97]. Verification runs through SheerID [98].

There is no nonprofit or startup discount; the pricing FAQ says Figma does not provide free Education teams for
early-stage startups or nonprofits [3].

## Security and compliance

Figma publishes a SOC 2 Type 2 report and ISO 27001 certification [37]. EU hosting for Figma and FigJam
files has been available since 2023 [84]. Governance+ is an Enterprise-only add-on with IP allowlisting,
network restrictions and enforced two-factor authentication [37]. A separate Figma for Government offering
targets agencies [89].

## Support: who gets a human

All plans start with Fig, an AI support chatbot. Starter and Education users who need more are moved to the
community forum; Professional, Organization and Enterprise users are moved to email [152]. Figma does not
offer phone or live chat support, and its team works Monday to Friday [152].

That design shows up in reviews. Of the 100 Trustpilot reviews we coded by hand, 8 are about support alone and
most of the 32 billing complaints describe a support exchange that went nowhere [167].

## The billing details that cause surprise bills

Four rules from Figma's help center explain most of the complaints. First, seats added to an annual
Professional plan go on a separate monthly subscription at the monthly price [90]. Second, the default
approval setting grants a requested seat automatically if one is unassigned [138]. Third, moving someone to
a View seat mid-term refunds nothing [138]. Fourth, if a payment fails, Figma retries for up to 21 days
and can then lock the account to view-only [142].

None of these is hidden. All of them are a few clicks away from the checkout.

## Moving up a plan

Most teams start on Professional and move. The upgrade to Organization can be done online by an admin with a
work email address; Figma moves the teams into the new organization and turns people with other companies' email
addresses into guests [137]. The unused part of any Professional subscription becomes a credit on the first
Organization invoice [137].

Enterprise is sold only through sales [137]. The help center suggests setting aside an hour for an
Organization migration, since the teams are unavailable while they move [137].

## How the price compares

Figma is not the cheapest design editor. Sketch's Standard plan is US$12 per editor a month billed yearly, its
Professional US$24 and Enterprise US$44, and Sketch still sells a Mac-only license for US$120 with a year of
updates [172]. Penpot's hosted Professional plan costs nothing, and its Unlimited plan is US$7 per editor
with a cap of US$175 a month [171].

By our arithmetic, one Figma Professional Full seat on annual billing costs US$192 a year against US$144 for
Sketch Standard. What the difference buys is the browser-first collaboration, the Dev seat and the wider suite.

## Canceling

On Professional, you cancel by downgrading the team to Starter; access continues to the end of the billing
period [137]. Before you do, the team must fit Starter's limits, or Figma locks the files; published Sites
are unpublished and custom domains on Make apps are removed [137].

Organization and Enterprise customers must contact support to downgrade [137]. For online Organization
purchases, cancellation is possible only in the 30 days before the annual term ends, and paid fees are not
refunded [59].

## What reviewers say

Trustpilot shows 2.0 from 241 reviews [167]. In the 100 most recent reviews we read, 58 gave one star and 12
gave five. We coded each by its main subject: 32 are about billing, seats or cancellation, 15 about AI credits
or Make, 13 about the interface or speed, 8 about support, 7 about account access or student verification, and
22 are positive [167].

App stores tell a different story: 4.6 from 20,943 ratings on the US App Store [168] and 4.1 from 64,416
on Google Play [169]. One reviewer put the split in a sentence: "5 stars for the product, but minus one
star for the pricing, billing, and support." [167]

## Where Figma's own pages disagree

We found nine places where Figma's pages contradict each other. Three matter most. A help-center billing
example charges US$15 for a month of a Full seat that the pricing page lists at US$20 [90]. The pricing FAQ
says Education accounts last two years for K-12 and higher education [3], while the Education help article
gives one year for students [98]. And the free MCP allowance is 20 tool calls a month in the developer docs
[155] but 6 in an older help article [100].

None changes what you pay. Each changes what you should screenshot before you rely on it.

## Our score

Capability 4.7, the category's deepest product. Ease of use 3.8: fast for designers, slow to learn for anyone
else. AI 3.6: broad, but priced by an estimate you see only after the prompt runs. Value 3.4: real free tiers,
rising seat prices. Integrations 4.5. Documentation 4.3, with 891 help articles and the contradictions above.
Support 2.6. Sentiment 3.4, with a wide gap between review sites and app stores.

## FAQ

**How much does Figma cost?**

In the US, Starter is free; Professional is US$16 per Full seat a month billed annually or US$20 monthly; Organization is US$55 and Enterprise US$90 per Full seat a month, billed annually.

**Is Figma worth it for a non-designer?**

Often not on its own. Non-designers usually need a Collab or free View seat inside a team that already pays for Figma.

**Does Figma train AI on my files?**

Only when Content training is on. It is on by default for Starter and Professional teams and off for Organization and Enterprise; admins can switch it off.

## Verdict

Buy Figma if your team designs software. A solo designer needs one Professional Full seat, US$192 a year on
annual billing. A small product team should mix seats: Full for designers, Dev for engineers, Collab for
everyone who comments on boards and decks.

Move to Organization only when you need several teams, shared fonts, SSO or Code Connect. Before any purchase,
set seat approvals to manual, check the content-training toggle, and calendar the renewal date.
