Freshdesk can be a startup's first help desk, but it does not start free. A new account gets a 14-day trial with Enterprise features and no credit card. Freshdesk's pricing page lists Growth, the cheapest plan, at $19 per agent per month billed annually or $23 per agent per month billed monthly[1]. One seat can be bought. For a team of one to five people answering email, Growth covers the essentials: a shared inbox, one SLA policy, automations, webhooks, the API and 500 one-time AI Agent sessions. **The ceiling arrives with growth itself**: automatic assignment, multiple SLA policies, custom roles and Copilot all sit on Pro. Need live chat inside your app? That is Omni, not standalone Freshdesk.

**$228** — Growth plan per agent a year, billed annually: the cheapest paid Freshdesk seat.

- **14 days** — Trial with Enterprise features, no card
- **500** — AI Agent sessions, once per account
- **100/min** — API calls on Growth, account-wide

## Day one is a trial, not a free plan

There is no self-serve free plan for a new buyer. The US pricing page shows only Growth, Pro and Enterprise, and since 2026 a move into Freshdesk's Free program happens through Customer Success Managers, not inside the product. The trial is the real starting point: 14 days of Enterprise features, no card, room to invite up to 2 team members, and free onboarding help. Treat those two weeks as a test of the plan you will actually buy, because the trial shows features Growth will not keep.

When the trial ends, you choose a plan and pay by card, or the account is suspended. Freshworks' Terms also let it delete trial data permanently unless you exported it first. Undecided founders should export before day 14. After the trial, Freshdesk can move a small account into its Free program through Customer Success: up to 2 agents, and the help center says it is free for 6 months[2]. It is email ticketing only, with no API, no marketplace apps, no SLA or business hours, no custom fields and no AI Agent sessions. Freshworks can end or charge for free programs at any time (Supplemental Terms). Our [guide to whether Freshdesk is free](/articles/is-freshdesk-free) covers the program in full.

> 💡 **Test Growth before the trial ends:** Every new trial account can switch between Growth, Pro and Enterprise while testing. Spend the last days on Growth to see exactly which features disappear, and configure only what Growth keeps.

## The first seat and the next four

Freshdesk's pricing page lists three plans, each priced per agent per month, and every agent on an account sits on the same plan; the full billing rules are in our [Freshdesk pricing guide](/articles/freshdesk-pricing). Prices exclude taxes, and only monthly and annual prices are published. The currency is chosen during the trial and fixed after the first purchase, which matters for a company billing from outside the US.

| Plan | Billed monthly | Billed annually | Per agent a year, billed annually |
|---|---|---|---|
| Growth | $23 per agent per month | $19 per agent per month | $228 |
| Pro | $66 per agent per month | $55 per agent per month | $660 |
| Enterprise | $107 per agent per month | $89 per agent per month | $1,068 |

By our arithmetic, a founder answering tickets alone pays $228 a year on annual Growth billing, three agents pay $684 and five pay $1,140. The same five seats on annual Pro billing come to $3,300 a year. The step up therefore costs $432 per agent a year, or $2,160 for a five-person team. That single-plan rule bites early. One person who needs a Pro feature moves every seat to Pro, so the decision is about the whole team, never one agent.

Annual billing is not automatically right for a company still finding its market. The monthly Growth rate is $23 per agent per month, so nine months of it ($207) cost less than one annual seat ($228); from the tenth month on, annual wins. Commitment matters as much as the saving. Cancellations and downgrades take effect only at the end of the paid term and payments are non-refundable, so an annual seat dropped in month four is still paid through month twelve. Added agents, by contrast, are charged pro rata and activate at once. Starting small costs nothing extra.

Founders who answer tickets a few days a month do not need a full seat. Occasional agents log in with day passes, priced at $2 per pass on Growth, each valid until midnight in the helpdesk time zone, and every plan includes 3 free day passes[3]. Replying to notification emails or calling the API with a profile key does not use a pass. By our arithmetic, a Growth seat billed annually becomes cheaper from 10 login days a month ($20 in passes against $19 a month); a seat billed monthly becomes cheaper only from 12 days ($24 against $23).

## What Growth covers in a small team's support day

A Growth team works from one shared inbox fed by several support email addresses, the customer portal with its knowledge base, web forms through the help widget, and Facebook. Ticket-creation, ticket-update and hourly automations all run on Growth. So do scenario automations that apply several actions in one click, custom ticket fields and statuses, time tracking and collision alerts when two agents open the same ticket. One default SLA policy and one set of business hours keep response targets visible. For three people splitting one queue, that is a working help desk.

The gaps show up around five agents. Tickets are not assigned automatically on Growth: round-robin and load-based assignment are Pro, so someone triages by hand. One SLA policy means a paying enterprise account and a free-tier user share the same targets until Pro adds multiple policies, reminders and escalations. Custom roles, collaborators, custom dashboards and the Freddy AI Copilot add-on are all Pro as well. Collaborators matter for startups: they let engineers see and comment on a ticket without a paid seat. On Growth, the workaround is an occasional agent on day passes.

> 💡 **Free a seat, keep the history:** Converting a departing agent to an occasional agent with a placeholder email frees the paid seat while keeping their ticket records.

## AI sessions, API and MCP for a product-led team

The Email AI Agent runs on Growth. It answers new tickets from mailboxes, the portal and web forms, drawing on published solution articles, uploaded files, crawled URLs and Q&A pairs. Each account gets 500 complimentary sessions once, not each month, and they last until used. After that, packs cost $49 per pack of 100 sessions, added to the current billing cycle; unused purchased sessions do not carry over to the next cycle. An email session is a 72-hour window from the customer's first email. By our arithmetic, a startup on monthly billing letting the agent handle 100 email conversations a month uses the 500 in five months, then buys one $49 pack of 100 sessions each month. At zero, the agent stops answering.

**Shadow mode** is the safe start. The agent writes its replies as private notes and never sends them, so you judge quality on real tickets before customers see anything. It only processes tickets that arrive after you turn it on, so plan a few weeks of normal volume before deciding.

Developers get the v2 API on Growth at 100 calls a minute, counted across the whole account rather than per agent; trial accounts get 50[4]. Every webhook, custom-app call and invalid request counts toward that limit, which matters once your product starts creating tickets from in-app events. Pro raises the limit to 400 calls a minute. Growth automations can fire webhooks to your own services, but using the response inside a rule (Trigger API) is Pro. The MCP server, generally available since 10 Sep 2026, lets AI tools such as Claude Code or Cursor read tickets, contacts and the knowledge base with an API key. Growth includes 100 MCP actions a month, at 25 a minute.

## Where a startup outgrows standalone Freshdesk

Channels come first. Standalone Freshdesk has no live chat, WhatsApp, Instagram or SMS for new accounts, and no Chat AI Agent; its help widget offers the knowledge base and web forms only. If your users expect a chat bubble inside the app, you need Freshdesk Omni, which adds web chat, a mobile chat SDK, WhatsApp, Instagram and the Chat AI Agent at its own per-agent prices. Our [Omni guide](/articles/freshdesk-omni) compares the two. Email-first products can stay on plain Freshdesk for a long time.

Compliance is the second trigger. A HIPAA business associate agreement, skill-based routing, a sandbox, the audit log and IP restrictions are all Enterprise features. A health-tech startup that handles patient data therefore starts on Enterprise or not at all. Security questionnaires also ask about AI training. Under Freshworks' Supplemental Terms, AI training is on unless the customer opts out by emailing support, and Freshworks says it does not use customer data to train third-party hosted models such as Azure OpenAI. Freshdesk is audited annually for ISO 27001, ISO 27701 and SOC 2 Type 2.

> ⚠ **Pick the data center at sign-up:** Freshdesk hosts accounts in the US, EU, India, Australia or the Middle East, chosen at sign-up; moving later needs a support ticket.

## Startup discounts: what rivals offer and Freshdesk does not

Freshdesk publishes no startup, nonprofit or education discount. Discounts tied to subscription length and agent count go through sales, so ask before signing an annual term. What every paid plan does include is 24/5 support and complimentary onboarding. Several rivals run formal programs. Zendesk has a startups program for early-stage companies. Intercom runs an Early Stage program for startups. Help Scout lists a startup plan for early-stage companies, and its Free plan covers 5 users, 1 inbox, 1 Docs site and 100 contacts a month. Each program has its own eligibility rules. A founder with a qualifying funding stage should price those offers against Growth before committing to a full annual term.

## FAQ

**Can I pay for Freshdesk with PayPal?**

No. The pricing page accepts Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express, and offline payments are made in USD.

**What happens to my data if I cancel?**

After the account closes, data stays available for export for 14 days. Freshworks may then keep it up to three months before deleting it, and deleted data cannot be recovered.

**Is Freshdesk a CRM?**

No. Freshdesk keeps contacts and companies for support work; CRM data comes from Freshsales, Freshworks' CRM, or from integrations such as Salesforce and Zoho CRM.

**Does switching from a trial to the Free program keep my setup?**

Not fully. Moving from a higher plan during the trial to the Free program loses certain features and their configurations, and the switch goes through Customer Success.

## The bottom line

Freshdesk suits an email-first startup with one to five agents that wants a real ticketing system from day one and can pay for it: annual Growth at $228 per agent a year, by our arithmetic $1,140 for five people. Run the 14-day trial on Growth's actual limits, start the AI agent in shadow mode, and keep part-time helpers on day passes. Plan for Pro once you need automatic assignment, several SLA policies or free collaborator seats. If chat inside your product or a startup discount matters more, look at Omni or the rivals' programs first.
