---

Glide (glideapps.com) can carry a field-service team's work orders, inspection checklists and field-sales visits, but only one of its two products documents the tools a technician uses on site. Glide Classic, the original builder that is still sold, has a barcode Scanner, a Signature component, one-time Location capture and an offline add-row action. Its Scanner needs Glide Classic Business, at $199 per month billed yearly or $249 per month billed monthly with 30 users included.[1] GlideOS, the AI-agent product new sign-ups land on, installs apps from a QR code and runs workflows on data changes, yet documents no offline mode. Both deliver web apps; neither documents store publishing. The verdict: a solid fit for crews who work in a phone browser. Not for teams that live on push alerts.

**5 updates** — What each barcode scan uses in Glide Classic, where scanning starts on the Business plan.

- **Business** — Lowest Glide Classic plan with the barcode Scanner
- **Dec 2024** — Glide Classic deprecated native push notifications
- **Oct 2026** — GlideOS data triggers start workflows on row changes (workflows run on paid plans)

## Pick the product before you pick the template

GlideOS and Glide Classic are separate products with separate accounts and plans, they cannot share data, and Glide says it has no tool to move Classic apps into GlideOS; our [Glide review](/articles/glide-review) explains the split. For a service business, that choice decides which field features you get. The component pages a dispatcher would read (Scanner, Signature, Location, Map, Voice Transcription, offline add-row) all sit in the Glide Classic documentation. The GlideOS docs describe a chat-first builder: you describe the app or upload a spreadsheet, PDF or screenshot, and the Glide Agent mocks it up before it builds.

The tension is direction of travel. Glide's main pricing page is the GlideOS page, and the Classic site promotes GlideOS as the new Glide. A team buying in November 2026 is steered toward GlideOS, while the documented field toolkit lives in the older product. Neither choice is wrong. List the three or four things a technician must do at every stop, then check each against the product you are about to pay for.

## A technician's shift in a Glide Classic app

The technician opens the app from the home screen, because Glide Classic apps are Progressive Web Apps installed to a phone, tablet or desktop. The job list can come from the Google Sheet the office already keeps: Glide Classic syncs Google Sheets both ways from Glide Classic Maker upward, while Free and Explorer only import. A Map component plots the jobs on Mapbox, so coordinates copied from Google Maps may sit slightly off, and Glide suggests filtering once a map passes 1,000 pins.

At the site, the Location component logs a one-time position that does not refresh; live distance needs a Distance to Location computed column. The Signature component needs a paid plan and saves the customer's signature as an image when the form is submitted. Photos go through the File and Image Pickers, with a 1 GB limit per file on top of the plan's storage cap. Since April 2025 a Voice Transcription component has turned spoken notes into text, which Glide pitches for field inspections.

Parts and serial numbers are where the plan starts to matter. The Scanner component and the Scan Barcode or QR Code action read codes through Dynamsoft, and both are limited to Glide Classic Business and Enterprise. **Each scan consumes 5 updates**,[2] and a scan that also adds or edits a row counts that change too. Scans have no cap. Updates do. When the team's monthly updates run out, scanning, Glide AI, workflows, integrations and external syncs stop until it upgrades or switches on paid overage ([pricing guide](/articles/glide-pricing)).

> 💡 **Test scanning before you commit:** Scanning needs Glide Classic Business. Its 14-day trial requires a card and renews into paid Glide Classic Business unless you cancel. Send Email does not work during the trial, so test email dispatch after it converts.

### Dead zones and the missing buzz

Basements and rural roads test any mobile app. Glide Classic's offline add-row action lets a technician submit new rows without a connection; the data waits on the device and reaches the data source once the signal returns.[3] It is not available on SQL sources or Big Tables, so a team that outgrows spreadsheet-type sources loses it. Glide's FAQ page also describes work order apps that open job details offline, without naming the product.

Alerts are the larger gap. Glide deprecated native push notifications in Glide Classic in December 2024, citing unreliable push support in Progressive Web Apps, and points builders to email, SMS or in-app notifications. Send Email runs up to 10,000 messages a month per team. Scheduled workflows cannot show an in-app notification. A dispatcher who needs a phone to buzz when a job lands should prove the email or SMS route first.

> ⚠ **No buzz when a job lands:** Glide Classic dropped native push notifications in December 2024, and GlideOS documents none; plan email, SMS or in-app alerts for dispatch.

## The dispatcher's side: who sees which job

Assignment in Glide Classic rests on Row Owners, which Glide enforces on its servers on every plan. Tag each work order with the technician's email and that person's app loads only their rows. Visibility conditions and filters merely hide things on screen. Glide's docs say they are not security, so never use them to keep one subcontractor away from another's jobs.

Who may sign in is a billing question. Glide Classic Explorer and Maker allow personal-email users only, such as Gmail addresses; technicians on a company domain need Glide Classic Business, although Glide says a Maker team can ask it to treat one email domain as personal. Business includes 30 users and adds $5 per additional user per month billed annually or $6 billed monthly. Users count only when active in the billing period. Classic workflows start from app interactions, schedules, webhooks, email, Slack or a manual run, and every run spends updates. Job routing draws on the same meter as scanning.

## What GlideOS gives a crew today

GlideOS starts the same job from a prompt. Upload the dispatch spreadsheet and the Glide Agent proposes an app, a database and workflows; the sheet is copied into a GlideOS table, and later edits do not write back to Google Sheets. On the first publish GlideOS shows a QR code that opens the app on a phone with steps to add it to the home screen.[4] People who only use published apps join as guests and take no seat.

Guests are unlimited on GlideOS Basic, Plus and Pro, though admins can invite at most 10 new guests every 30 days (3 per member on Pro and Enterprise). Data triggers, added in October 2026, start a workflow the moment a row is added, updated or deleted, so a status change can alert a supervisor. They do not fire for tools writing straight to the database. Workflows run only on paid plans: GlideOS Basic allows 1 enabled workflow, Plus 5, Pro unlimited. Each step spends credits.

Gaps remain. No offline mode is documented for GlideOS, and no app-store publishing either ([our Glide review](/articles/glide-review)); Glide for iPhone is announced as an app for building and running your business, not a way to ship your own app. Glide's Enterprise page says rollouts often begin as a pilot for a field or operations team that needs a mobile front end on a system of record. For crews where the signal drops, that silence on offline use decides it.

> 💡 **Lock job lists with Row Owners:** Filters only hide rows on screen. Row Owners make Glide Classic send each technician only the work orders tagged with their email.

## Customers and templates Glide points to

Most of Glide's field-service stories do not name the product. Lone Star Communications is the exception: a Glide Classic page says the company gives 100+ field technicians instant access to tools and data and claims 15x field technician efficiency (as read in November 2026). Its customer story says Lone Star tried Adalo and Bubble before choosing Glide for its quick Google Sheets integration. On Glide's customer pages, as read in November 2026, ClearlyApps, an agency, says a Glide employee portal cut a pool company owner's daily drive time by 50%, and RDG Planning and Design says it built a field inspection app in about a day and a half.

The template gallery, a Classic-era library whose pages name no product, lists 58 Operations and Field templates among 540, as read in November 2026. Glide-made options include Work Order Management, which assigns tasks to technicians and shows their locations on a dashboard, and Inspection Tool, for site and equipment checklists. Community templates are paid, from $4.99 to $999.99 across the gallery. A template brings no plan, users or updates with it. The [templates guide](/articles/glide-templates) covers adapting one.

## What a field team ends up paying

On the Classic side, the field toolkit points to Glide Classic Business: Scanner, business-domain sign-ins and unlimited apps start there, with 30 users and 5,000 updates a month. By our arithmetic, a 40-user crew on Glide Classic Business comes to $249 per month billed yearly or $309 per month billed monthly, so yearly billing saves $720 a year. Past the allowance, a team that switched on unlimited updates pays 2¢ per update, so 1,000 extra updates come to $20. Crews signing in with personal email can stay lower: Glide Classic Maker, at $49 per month billed yearly or $60 billed monthly, covers Google Sheets sync and Signature, but has no Scanner and only 500 updates a month.

GlideOS bills per organization and monthly only; Glide says annual plans are coming soon. GlideOS Basic, at $25 per month for 100 credits, publishes 2 apps to guests with 1 enabled workflow; GlideOS Plus with 250 credits costs $50 per month, with 5 apps and 5 workflows. GlideOS Pro costs $125 per month for 5 team members and 500 credits, plus $10 per extra member per month, and adds unlimited published apps and workflows, MCP, connection strings, 24-hour backups and human support. Credits pay for building, in-app AI and workflow steps; when monthly credits are gone, new AI requests stop until they reset or you buy more, and GlideOS's Terms (July 2026) make fees and credits non-refundable except where the law requires, as our [pricing guide](/articles/glide-pricing) explains.

## FAQ

**Can technicians use a handheld barcode scanner instead of the phone camera?**

A Glide blog post says apps can read barcodes with the phone camera through Dynamsoft or with an attached Zebra scanner device; the post does not name the product. In Glide Classic, scanning in the app starts on the Business plan.

**Can a Glide app track where technicians are in real time?**

Glide Classic's Location component records a single position that does not update. Glide's docs point to a Distance to Location computed column for live tracking.

**Can technicians take card payments in a Glide app?**

Glide's rules prohibit storing card and bank account numbers in apps. GlideOS routes end-user payments through Stripe Connect, and Glide may charge a per-transaction fee whose amount is not published.

**Will the app run on both iPhone and Android phones?**

Yes, as a web app. Glide Classic apps install to Apple and Android home screens from the browser, and GlideOS apps install from a QR code. Glide Classic does not publish to the Apple App Store or Google Play, and no store publishing is documented for GlideOS.

## The bottom line

Glide suits field crews whose work fits a phone browser: a job list, photos, a signature, a status change and an email to the office. Glide Classic documents that kit today, with scanning reserved for Glide Classic Business and paid for in updates; GlideOS adds an AI builder, QR installs and data-triggered workflows, but documents no offline mode. Teams that need store apps or native push should look elsewhere. Everyone else should pilot one route with real technicians, in a real dead zone, before buying.
