**3.9 / 5** — Our Toolkit Score for Google Search Console: free, first-party and essential, held back by hidden rows, thin support and the 2025-2026 impression error.

- **Free** — no paid tier, no trial
- **16 months** — of Performance history
- **1,000 rows** — per report table and export

## The verdict, in one line

Google Search Console is the one tool that shows what Google itself recorded about your site: clicks, impressions, indexing problems and penalties. **It costs nothing**, there is no paid tier, and it is the only first-party record of your Google traffic, now including AI Overviews and AI Mode. It also hides more than most users realize, from rare queries to anything at all about competitors, and it reports what happened rather than why. Use it every week. Do not use it alone. Pair it with Bing Webmaster Tools, and add a paid suite only when you need research it cannot give you.

In Google's own description, it is a free service that helps you monitor, maintain and troubleshoot your site's presence in Search [1]. It reports how Google crawls, indexes and ranks your pages without changing any of them. Signing up is not required to appear in Google results. So the question is never whether you are allowed in. It is whether you want to see what happens to your pages there.

## Who it's for, and who can skip it

Google names four audiences: business owners, SEO specialists, site administrators and web developers. In practice, anyone who sells online, publishes for traffic or runs SEO for clients should open it often: Performance for drops, Page indexing for new errors, messages for alerts. Google suggests a look every month or so for light users. Busy sites need weekly. Agencies need daily.

Google itself says sites on hosts like Blogger, Wix or Squarespace, or very small businesses, might not need Search Console at all. We disagree mildly. Setup takes minutes, and security and manual action alerts arrive by email even if you never log in again. That covers the two worst cases, a hacked site and a penalty, which a small owner would otherwise discover only after the traffic is gone. Verify the site. Then decide. On WordPress, Google's Site Kit plugin shows Search Console metrics inside the dashboard and handles verification too.

> 💡 **Verify a Domain property with DNS:** DNS is the only way to verify a Domain property, which covers every subdomain and protocol, and a redesign cannot break it.

## What you need to start, and what it costs

### Free really means free

There is no paid tier, trial or upgrade [1], and the API is free as well, within a usage quota. The only metered cost sits outside the product, in BigQuery, and only if you choose bulk export. For context, the cheapest paid plan in our SEO reviews is Ubersuggest Individual at $192 a year, and the most common professional entry plans run $129 to $139 a month. The real entry price is different: a Google account, proof that you own the site, and a willingness to make some changes to how the site is organized.

### Properties, verification and users

A **Domain property** covers every subdomain and protocol, while a URL-prefix property covers one exact address; Google generally recommends the Domain type. One account holds up to 1,000 properties, though most sites need one. You must verify before you see any data, by HTML file, HTML tag, Google Analytics, Tag Manager, Google Sites or Blogger, or DNS, and DNS is the only way to verify a Domain property. Records can take two or three days to propagate. Remove the token and you lose access. Since July 2026, creators can also add accounts on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube as platform properties, which measure Google Search only, not views inside the app.

A property can have at most 100 non-owners. Delegated owners stop at 500 owners in total, verified owners have no cap, only owners grant access, and email groups cannot be added. Agencies with large client teams will feel the 100 limit before anything else, although Search Console charges nothing below it, where paid suites usually bill every seat. Email settings are per user, not per property, and the message panel keeps a year of messages, capped at 2,000. Make sure at least one person actually receives the alerts.

## The Performance report: where the real data lives

By default it shows click and impression data from Google Search for the past three months, split by query, page, country, device, search appearance and date, with separate reports for Discover and News. Nothing else gives this data. The Overview page sits in front of it with manual actions, security issues, total clicks, indexed pages and recommendations. For most small sites, that page is enough.

### Read the four metrics once

CTR is clicks divided by impressions. Average position is the average position of the topmost result from your site. An impression usually counts when your result is on the page, scrolled into view or not, and clicks that stay inside Google do not count. **Impressions are not search volume**: if you rank on page five, impressions stay near zero no matter how popular the query is. Average position is not a rank either, because it is averaged across every query and impression, so a page at 1 for one query and 30 for another averages 15.5. Google itself recommends watching trends in impressions and clicks more than position alone. Read position per query, never per site.

### Filters, branded queries and the newer views

Filters accept plain text or RE2 regular expressions. A regex such as (pricing|cost|price) on the Queries tab groups every pricing question into one view, and a second filter with Doesn't match regex and your brand name removes navigational searches that would flatter the totals. You can compare two countries, devices or date ranges, but only one comparison at a time. The built-in branded filter does the brand split for you, with data from March 11, 2025. It is not offered for sub-properties or low-traffic sites. AI does the classifying, so it can mislabel queries.

Insights is the simplified view, with clicks, top content, trending queries and other traffic sources, plus query groups that cluster near-identical searches so a beginner sees topics rather than spelling variants. Google still says it may not be available to everyone. A 24-hour view adds hourly data in your local time, while every other view uses Pacific Time. Use it after a launch. And since November 17, 2025, you can pin up to 200 annotations to the chart, though notes older than 500 days are deleted automatically, which is shorter than the history you may want to explain later.

## How AI search shows up in the numbers

AI features are counted inside normal Web search data [173]. An AI Overview occupies a single position in the results, and every link inside it shares that position. A click to your site from an AI Overview or AI Mode counts as a click, and a follow-up question in AI Mode counts as a new query. So AI traffic is already in your totals. It is simply mixed in, and the main report gives you no clean way to pull it apart.

The separate generative AI performance report, extended to all websites worldwide on August 31, 2026, helps with one question. It shows impressions only, meaning how many times links to your site were shown in a generative AI feature, with no clicks and the usual 1,000-row limit. It tells you whether you are being shown at all. Under Settings, a separate control lets owners choose Include or Exclude for AI Overviews, AI Mode and AI features in Discover. Include is the default, and Exclude does not touch AI training; Google points to Google-Extended for that. Few tools give publishers a switch this direct.

## Where the data runs out

### The 1,000-row ceiling and the hidden long tail

"Our tables can show a maximum of 1,000 rows, so some rows might be omitted" [232]. Exports from reports carry the same cap, although the chart totals stay complete. A site with 40,000 ranking queries sees 2.5% of them in the table, and the rest needs the API or bulk export. Some queries are also hidden to protect user privacy, and only top data rows are stored, so filtered totals may not add up. Ahrefs claims the product hides 46% of your traffic in anonymized queries. That is a rival's estimate, not Google's figure, but even half that share would make long-tail research from Search Console alone unreliable.

> ⚠ **Tables hide the long tail:** Report tables stop at 1,000 rows, keep only top rows and omit anonymized queries, so filtered totals may not add up.

### Delays and sixteen months of history

Collected data should be available in two to three days, and the most recent days can be preliminary, drawn as a dotted line. This is not a real-time tool. Compare complete weeks, not yesterday. The Performance report keeps 16 months of data, and older days drop off for good. The only way to keep more is to export it yourself, which is why the BigQuery export, covered below, is worth starting early. **You cannot go back** for dropped days.

### The impression error Google admits

Google keeps a public page of data anomalies, and in 2026 alone it lists Discover logging errors on four dates, lost generative AI impressions from August 13 to 17, and two days missing from bulk exports. Check it before you blame a drop on your site. The largest entry is blunt: "A logging error prevented Search Console from accurately reporting impressions from May 13, 2025 until April 27, 2026" [159]. That is 349 days of impression data that cannot be compared with what came after, while clicks were not affected. Any year-over-year CTR trend that spans late April 2026 mixes two counting regimes. Read it as broken.

> ⚠ **Impressions were misreported for a year:** A logging error affected impressions from May 13, 2025 to April 27, 2026; clicks were not affected, so CTR trends across that date are broken.

## Indexing, crawling and the fix-it workflow

### Page indexing and validation

The Page indexing report counts indexed and non-indexed pages and lists why pages were left out. Each reason has a Source column, Website or Google, and you can generally fix only the Website ones. Example lists stop at 1,000 URLs, and Google says sites under 500 pages probably do not need the report at all. After a fix, Validate fix asks Google to recheck only the affected URLs. Validation typically takes up to about two weeks and sometimes much longer, and a single remaining instance stops it. Patience is part of the workflow.

### URL Inspection and indexing requests

URL Inspection shows how Google sees one page: index status, canonical, crawl date and rendering. Through the API, the published per-site limit is 2,000 inspections a day and 600 a minute, so a site with 50,000 URLs needs at least 25 days to inspect every page once; most audits sample the templates and the pages that earn money. You can request indexing from the same screen, but a request does not guarantee indexing, and over-quota requests fail silently. The help page even gives three estimates on one page: a week or two, a day or so, and a few days. For many URLs, submit a sitemap instead.

### Sitemaps, robots.txt and Crawl Stats

You submit a sitemap's address, not the file itself. Each sitemap holds up to 50,000 URLs and 50MB uncompressed, and the report lists only sitemaps sent through it or the API, not ones found in robots.txt. The robots.txt report shows the files Google fetched for your top hosts and lets you request an emergency recrawl, but only for domain-level properties. Crawl Stats shows Google's requests, response codes and host status over 90 days. Google says sites with fewer than a thousand pages should not need it. For large sites it is the best early warning of server trouble.

## Penalties, security and the repair tools

A manual action means a human reviewer at Google has decided your pages break spam policies, and some or all of the site disappears from results. You are notified in the report and by message, and reconsideration can take several days or weeks. **This report alone justifies an account.** The Security Issues report flags hacked content, malware and social engineering, and Google calls it the source of truth for security issues on your site. A review can take from a few days to a few weeks. Nobody else can tell you this from Google's side.

The repair tools are sharper and riskier. Removals hides a URL fast, for about six months, but deletes nothing: a page removed on January 1 can reappear around July 1 unless the server returns 404 or 410 or the page carries noindex by then. Treat it as an emergency brake. Disavow is an advanced feature most sites will never need, and it does not work with Domain properties. Change of Address handles a move to a new domain, not http to https, and requires owning both properties with the same Google account.

### Links, page experience and rich results

The Links report lists top linked pages, top linking sites and anchor text, with tables capped at 1,000 rows and an export of up to 100,000. It does not flag nofollow links. Good for your own site; useless for prospecting. Core Web Vitals uses real visitor data from the Chrome UX Report, with thresholds of 2.5 seconds for LCP, 200 milliseconds for INP and 0.1 for CLS. Every rich result type gets its own report under Enhancements, but Google still decides per query whether to show one, so valid markup earns eligibility, nothing more. Online merchants also get Shopping reports, while affiliate sites do not qualify.

## Getting the data out: API, BigQuery and exports

Most reports export the current view to Google Sheets, Excel or CSV, capped at 1,000 rows of representative examples, though the totals in the export are true totals. For a small site that is the whole picture. For a large site it is a sample. The **Search Console API** exposes performance, sitemaps, sites and URL Inspection data, free within a usage quota, and performance data reaches 50,000 rows per day, per search type, per property. That is 50 times the 1,000 rows a report table shows. For any serious site, the API is the real data source, and our [Search Console API guide](/articles/google-search-console-api) covers it in detail.

Bulk export sends performance data to BigQuery every day. It needs a Google Cloud project with billing, because storage and query usage above the free quota is charged. The first export arrives within 48 hours, there is no backfill, and anonymized queries stay excluded. Export tables are kept forever by default, which makes this the only free path past 16 months. A site that exports every day for three years builds a history more than twice as long as the interface keeps. One caution on linking to Google Analytics: anyone with access to that Analytics property may be able to see Search Console data, so review who has access first.

> 💡 **Start the BigQuery export early:** Bulk export has no backfill and keeps tables forever by default, so it is the only free way to hold more than 16 months of data.

## What it cannot tell you, and what fills the gap

It only covers sites you verify, so you cannot add a site you do not own and see its queries. It shows Google, not Bing or AI chat apps. It reports what happened, not why rankings moved, and it gives no volume, difficulty or keyword ideas. Those gaps are why paid SEO suites still exist. For rival research, Semrush, Ahrefs or SE Ranking estimate traffic from their own crawls, and Semrush SEO costs $139 a month. Search Console has no answer here. That is by design.

**Bing Webmaster Tools** is the closest match: free, verified sites only, with performance and indexing reports, and it can import sites from Search Console. Since February 2026 it has an AI Performance report covering citations in Copilot, and it adds competitor backlinks and keyword research. Use both. Paid suites estimate where Search Console measures: Ahrefs Lite costs $129 a month, SE Ranking Core $129 and Mangools Basic $49, and most of them import Search Console data rather than replace it. Our [Search Console alternatives guide](/articles/google-search-console-alternatives) compares them.

## Support, ratings and our score

Basic use is easy: Overview, Performance, Page indexing. Depth is harder. Aggregation by property versus by page changes CTR and position, and Google's own help admits filtered totals may not add up, so a beginner can misread a report that is technically correct. Documentation is broad, with a help center of over 200 articles we read and a blog with dated announcements, but some pages still say Coverage report or FID. There is no support ticket. Help comes from documentation, the community forum and office hours. For a free product, that is the trade.

**What users rate it, by platform**

| Platform | Rating | Reviews | As of |
|---|---|---|---|

_Rendered from our current record; these are other platforms' user scores, separate from our own Toolkit Score._

Ratings on the software review platforms are high, and there is no Trustpilot listing. The likely reason is simple: reviewers grade a product partly against its price, and a free tool that measures Google directly has very little to lose on that test. Our own score weighs value and the authority of the data against depth outside your own site, and the card below gives the reasoning for each axis.

**Our scorecard — 3.9/5**
- Capability & depth: 3.3/5 — First-party Google data no paid tool can match for your own site: clicks, impressions, CTR and position by query and page over 16 months, every Page indexing reason, URL Inspection with live test, Links, Removals, Core Web Vitals, manual actions and security. Held back by data only for verified sites: no competitor research, no search volume, no keyword ideas, no fixed-list rank tracking, 1,000-row tables and anonymized queries.
- Ease of use: 3.5/5 — Overview, Insights and the Performance report are approachable, and a Google account is the only requirement. Held back by verification (DNS records can take two to three days), aggregation by property versus page that changes CTR and position, filtered totals that do not add up, and three different indexing time estimates on one help page.
- AI: 3.4/5 — AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted inside Web search data; a generative AI performance report for Search and Discover reached all websites on August 31, 2026; a Search generative AI control lets owners exclude a site; an AI-powered report configuration exists. Held back by impressions only in the AI report, an experimental configuration tool shown to a small share of users with 20 requests a day, and no official MCP server.
- Value for money: 4.8/5 — Free with no paid tier, seat price or trial, and a free API with generous quotas (1,200 queries a minute per site, 50,000 rows a day per search type). The only metered cost is BigQuery storage and queries above the free level for bulk export, billed by Google Cloud.
- Integrations: 4.1/5 — Search Console API (performance, sitemaps, sites, URL Inspection), daily bulk export to BigQuery, Google Analytics association, Looker Studio template, Site Kit for WordPress, and imports into every paid SEO suite we reviewed. Held back by OAuth-only access, a one-to-one Analytics link and no official MCP server.
- Docs & learning resources: 3.9/5 — A help center of over 200 articles, developer documentation, a dated Search Central blog and two learning playlists added on October 6, 2026. Held back by 12 contradictions between or within pages and outdated pages that still cite the Coverage report, FID and Fetch as Google.
- Support & reliability: 2.6/5 — Help center, community forum and office hours, plus a public data anomalies page. Held back by no support tickets, indexing bugs reportable in English only, impressions misreported for 349 days from May 13, 2025 to April 27, 2026, several Discover logging errors in 2026 and two days missing from bulk exports.
- User sentiment: 4.7/5 — Consistently positive across three platforms with 30+ reviews (Google-indexed on 13 October 2026): G2 4.7 from 515, Capterra 4.8 from 219, TrustRadius 4.5 of 5 (9 out of 10) from 249. Axis score 4.7: the mean of each platform owner's displayed rating with at least 30 reviews, weighted by review count (G2 4.7 (515); TrustRadius 4.5 (249); Capterra 4.8 (219); 983 reviews in all), with Capterra, GetApp and Software Advice counted once as Gartner.

That lands Search Console at **3.9/5**. Its weakest marks are for support and for data reliability, given the impression error of 2025-2026. Its strongest is price.

## FAQ

**What is Google Search Console?**

A free Google service that shows how your verified site performs in Google Search and flags indexing, spam and security problems.

**Is Google Search Console free?**

Yes. There is no paid tier, trial or upgrade, and the API is free within a usage quota. The only metered cost is BigQuery storage and queries above the free quota if you use bulk export.

**Does Search Console show AI Overviews traffic?**

Yes. AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks are counted in Web data, and a separate generative AI report shows impressions only.

**Can I see competitors in Search Console?**

No. It only shows data for sites you have verified.

**How long does Search Console keep data?**

The Performance report keeps 16 months. Bulk export to BigQuery keeps tables forever by default, but it has no backfill.

**Does Search Console show every query?**

No. Tables show at most 1,000 rows, some queries are anonymized to protect privacy, and only top rows are stored. The API reaches 50,000 rows per day, per search type, per property.

## The bottom line

Google Search Console is mandatory, free and incomplete. It is the only first-party record of your Google traffic, now including AI Overviews and AI Mode, and the only place Google tells you about penalties and hacks. It will not show competitors, search volume or rare queries, and its tables stop at 1,000 rows. Verify a Domain property, read Performance weekly, start the BigQuery export early, and pair it with Bing Webmaster Tools. Add a paid suite only when you need research. For exactly what free covers, read [is Google Search Console free](/articles/is-google-search-console-free).
