Help Scout fits a SaaS support team that wants email, in-app chat and product docs in one place, with engineers looped in without paying for full seats. The plan that carries most of that is Plus, at $45 per user per month billed annually or $54 per user per month billed monthly [1]. Light users, issue tracking, company management, the Customer Portal and AI Topics (beta) all begin there. Standard, at $25 per user per month billed annually or $30 billed monthly, already covers in-app chat, customer properties, the API and webhooks. Every person with a login is a billable user, so headcount drives the bill; our [pricing breakdown](/articles/help-scout-pricing) has the full math. Skip it if phone is your main channel.

**$45** — Plus, per user per month billed annually ($54 billed monthly): where light users, issue links and company management start.

- **5 / 15** — Light users included on Plus / Pro (max 25 / 50)
- **$0.75** — Per Scout resolution (Envoy add-on), on top of the plan
- **200 / 400 / 800** — API calls a minute on Standard / Plus / Pro

## Putting support inside the product with Beacon

Beacon is the embeddable widget a SaaS team drops into its web app, and native iOS and Android SDKs cover mobile apps. It carries Docs search, a contact form, live chat, Scout and proactive Messages, each switched on per Beacon, with one Beacon per page. Free gets 1 Beacon, Standard 5, and Plus and Pro unlimited, which matters once you run separate widgets for the marketing site, the app and an admin console. Live chat starts on Standard. Chat is offered only while someone is available; otherwise Beacon falls back to email.

The JavaScript API's identify method is what makes Beacon useful in a logged-in product. It creates or updates the customer profile, pre-fills and hides name and email on the contact form, and records custom data as customer properties [2]. Customer properties start on Standard, with up to 50 contact properties such as plan, signup date or account ID. Identify caps values: names at 80 characters, company and job title at 60, text properties at 255. Agents then see the customer's plan and account age beside the conversation. Nobody has to ask.

Secure Mode comes next. It verifies identity with a SHA-256 HMAC of the visitor's email, computed on your server with the Beacon's secret key, so one user cannot pull up another user's support history [3]. It also gives customers their history across devices. On mobile, the signature must be passed on every open and never computed with a key stored in the app. It needs custom coding. Budget a developer task. Messages targeted at selected people and NPS surveys also depend on identify, so the same work pays off twice. Our [Beacon guide](/articles/help-scout-beacon) walks through the install.

> 💡 **Map customer properties before installing Beacon:** Decide which of your up to 50 contact properties identify should send, such as plan or signup date, so agents see account context from the first conversation. Customer properties need Standard or higher.

> ⚠ **Light users cannot use apps:** Light users (Plus and Pro) cannot use apps or the API, so a developer on a light seat cannot create a Linear or GitHub issue from the sidebar; an agent with a full seat does it.

## Letting Scout answer from your product docs

Scout (formerly AI Answers) is Help Scout's AI agent. It answers in Beacon chat and, since October 2026, in email, but not on Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp or SMS. Its sources are Docs sites, public web pages, files such as PDFs, and Google Docs or Sheets shared by link. Website sources are not refreshed automatically, while Docs sites sync immediately, so a team that ships every week should keep release notes in Docs. Exclusions send chosen topics straight to the team, and test mode lets you check answers before customers see them.

Scout is billed through the Envoy add-on at $0.75 per resolution, in arrears, on top of the per-user price on Standard, Plus and Pro. New accounts get three months of free resolutions from the day the account is created; existing customers who start later get no trial. A resolution is one conversation Scout closes without human help, charged once however many questions it holds. By our arithmetic, 33 resolutions a month cost about as much as one Standard seat billed annually, and 500 resolutions come to $375 a month. A monthly cap, counted in resolutions, keeps the bill bounded.

Help Scout's SaaS page claims an average AI agent resolution rate of 73%, and its customer stories show a wide spread. EmailOctopus says it uses Scout (then called AI Answers) for 70% of its support volume, The Academy to Innovate HR reports that 85% of the conversations customers start with it get resolved, and eCatholic says it handles over 15% of conversations automatically. Those are vendor and customer figures, not forecasts. Scout answers only: it cannot refund a charge, change a plan or update a record, so account changes still need a person. Measure your own rate.

## Bringing engineering and product into the loop

Light users are the feature many SaaS teams look at Plus for. They let developers, product managers and founders view conversations and collaborate without a full seat, but they cannot reply to customers, be assigned, join teams, or use the API, apps, MCP or mobile app [4]. Plus includes 5 light users and allows up to 25; Pro includes 15 and allows up to 50. Extra light users cost $10 per light user per month billed annually or $12 billed monthly. By our arithmetic, a team that wants ten light users pays for five extras, or $50 a month billed annually.

Issue tracking also starts on Plus. The Linear, Jira and GitHub integrations let agents search, link and create issues from the conversation sidebar; Linear and GitHub need the Access API permission. Linear asks every Help Scout user to authorize with their own Linear account, and it can file linked conversations as Customer Requests grouped by company, so product managers see which accounts asked for a fix. Jira can reopen the conversation when the issue is done. On Standard, the new Slack integration (beta) only posts notifications from Help Scout into Slack.

AI Topics, in beta on current Plus and Pro plans, labels each conversation with a theme; it needs at least 100 conversations before it proposes 8 to 15 topics. During the beta a topic works as a workflow condition but not as an action. Combined with company filters, it can show which product areas generate questions and from which accounts. Developers get the Inbox API at 200 calls a minute on Standard, 400 on Plus and 800 on Pro, webhooks from Standard, and a read-only MCP connector for Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor; reporting endpoints need Plus. Our [API guide](/articles/help-scout-api) has the details.

> 💡 **Mine failed Docs searches:** The Docs report lists searches that found nothing; each one is an article to write before Scout can answer it.

## Billing questions and B2B accounts

The Stripe app is available on every Help Scout plan. It shows subscriptions, invoices and payments in the sidebar and lets agents create or cancel subscriptions and issue full or partial refunds without leaving the conversation. Installing it needs a Stripe admin-level user and a Help Scout user with the Access API permission. The catch is permissions. Every Help Scout user can refund from the sidebar regardless of their own Stripe rights, so decide who gets a full login before you connect it, and keep finance colleagues who only need to read as light users on Plus.

Company management is the B2B layer, on Plus and Pro. It adds a company list and profiles, company cards in the sidebar, company filters in Views and reports, company variables in saved replies and company-level workflows. Company properties hold account-level data such as plan type or billing details, but they can be updated only through the API, not through Beacon identify or Zapier. Help Scout's SaaS page suggests separate Inboxes for product, billing or enterprise clients. Standard includes 2 Inboxes, Plus 5 and Pro 10, and an extra Inbox costs $10 per Inbox per month billed annually or $12 billed monthly.

The Customer Portal, launched in August 2026 on Plus and Pro, gives selected contacts a sign-in site on a helpscoutportal.com address where they see their own conversations or their whole company's. Customers sign in with a six-digit email code, with no password and no self-registration, and they reply only to conversations they started. For an enterprise client asking where a colleague's request went, that answers the question without a Beacon build. Showing history inside Beacon is possible but needs development work, and Help Scout points to the portal as the easier route.

> ⚠ **Stripe refunds bypass Stripe roles:** Once the Stripe app is connected, every Help Scout user can issue refunds from the sidebar regardless of their own Stripe permissions.

## Which plan a SaaS team needs

| SaaS need | Lowest current plan |
|---|---|
| In-app Beacon chat, customer properties, webhooks, API access | Standard |
| Light users, Linear, Jira and GitHub issues, company management | Plus |
| Customer Portal, AI Topics (beta), Restricted Docs, Beacon branding removal | Plus |
| Load-balanced routing, SSO/SAML included, automatic chat translations | Pro |

The step from Standard to Plus adds $20 per user per month billed annually, and that is the real decision. By our arithmetic, five agents cost $125 a month on Standard and $225 a month on Plus, both billed annually; ten agents come to $450 a month on Plus. Plus tops out at 50 users, and Pro needs at least 10, which puts its floor at $750 a month billed annually. Monthly billing costs 20% more on every plan. A small team that needs only in-app chat, docs and Stripe can stay on Standard.

A few limits shape the choice. There is no native phone system, so a team with phone support connects Aircall or another integration. Plus allows 2 SLA policies with conditions, enough to give enterprise accounts a faster target than everyone else, while Standard's single basic policy applies to all conversations. Data is hosted on AWS in the United States with no EU-only residency, a point European customers raise in security reviews. SSO/SAML is included on Pro and an add-on without a published price on Standard and Plus.

Help Scout says 2,500+ SaaS teams use it, and its customer stories give the shape of the payoff in the customers' own figures. Litmus, with 700k+ users, has used Help Scout for nine years, and its case-study teaser credits it with a 26% higher retention rate for new customers. Brain.fm says it resolves 60% of conversations with the first email and keeps average response time under an hour across 100k+ users. OnePageCRM says switching cut its workload by 50%. None of these is a benchmark. They show what email-first teams report.

## FAQ

**Does Help Scout have a startup discount?**

Yes. Its startup program gives 6 months free, Scout (formerly AI Answers) included, to new customers that are incorporated tech startups under two years old with under $1 million ARR.

**Can a SaaS team try Plus before paying?**

Yes. Help Scout offers a 15-day trial of Standard or Plus with all of that plan's features and no credit card; Pro trials go through sales.

**Can we migrate from another help desk?**

Help Scout works with Import2 to import from tools such as Zendesk, Freshdesk and Intercom, free up to 500,000 records. Workflows, saved replies, custom fields and Inbox settings do not move and must be recreated.

**Does Help Scout use our conversations to train AI?**

Its Terms let Help Scout aggregate de-identified customer data into Training Datasets for its AI offerings, with an opt-out by emailing help@helpscout.com; accounts with a signed BAA are opted out automatically. Its AI Transparency page says it does not send account data back to OpenAI to train the global model.

## The bottom line

Help Scout suits a SaaS team whose support runs on email, in-app chat and docs, and whose engineers need to see customer pain without answering it. Standard is enough for Beacon, customer properties and the API. Plus is where the SaaS workflow comes together: light users, issue links, company management, the Customer Portal and Topics. Scout adds a per-resolution meter on top, so set the cap before launch. Teams that live on the phone, need EU-only hosting or want an AI agent that changes accounts should look elsewhere.
