# How to Cancel Descript: Steps, Refund Windows and Billing Traps

> Cancel Descript from the Plan tab as the Drive owner. Plan refunds only within 48 hours of the invoice, seats within 7 days, top-ups never. Mind seats.

To cancel Descript, the Drive owner opens App Settings, goes to the Plan tab and downgrades the Drive to Free. Descript treats cancelling and downgrading to Free as the same action, and the paid plan keeps running until the end of the current billing cycle [1]. Getting money back is a separate question with a short clock. **A plan refund is possible only within 48 hours of the invoice date**, an Editor seat refund within 7 days, and top-ups are never refunded [2]. Miss those windows and cancelling only stops the next renewal. Our verdict is simple. Decide early, ideally inside those 48 hours after the invoice.

**48 hours** — The window after an invoice in which Descript allows a plan refund (Editor seats: 7 days).

- **48 hours** — Plan refund window after the invoice date
- **7 days** — Editor seat refund window after the invoice date
- **Never** — Top-ups of media minutes or AI credits are refunded

## Cancel Descript in five steps

The flow is short, but it only works from the right account. Descript's support team processes cancellations only when the request comes from the Drive owner's email address, and only the Drive owner manages billing, the payment method and invoices. If someone else on your team set up the subscription, they have to do this part. Descript's security page adds that paid subscriptions can be cancelled at any time from the account page, with payments handled by Stripe. Here is the sequence we pieced together from the help center:

1. Sign in with the Drive owner's account.
2. Open App Settings from your profile icon or from the Drive selector, then open the Plan tab.
3. Choose to downgrade the Drive to Free, or to a cheaper paid plan if you only want a smaller bill.
4. Pick a cancellation reason. The flow requires one.
5. Check the Billing cycle field, which shows the date, time and time zone of the next auto-renewal. That is when your plan ends.

A pending cancellation or downgrade can be undone at any point before the billing cycle ends, so changing your mind costs nothing until that date. Do not expect anything to switch off the moment you confirm. Your Editors keep their paid features, minutes and credits until the cycle closes, and only then does the Drive move to Free.

### One Drive, one subscription

The step people skip is the Drive check. A Descript account can belong to several Drives, and each Drive has its own subscription, card, members and invoices. Cancelling the plan on one Drive does not cancel plans on any other Drive, and Descript's billing help points to other Drives as the likely source of charges that arrive after cancelling. Open the Drive selector, look at every Drive you own, and repeat the five steps on each one that still shows a paid plan.

> 💡 **Request refunds the same day:** The 48-hour plan refund window starts at the invoice date, so contact support from the account email as soon as the renewal charge appears.

> ⚠ **Every Drive bills separately:** Cancelling one Drive's plan does not cancel plans on other Drives you own, so check each one in the Drive selector.

## What changes when the paid plan ends

When the cycle closes, the Drive lands on the Free plan, which is far tighter than any paid tier. Free gives one person 1 media hour a month, a one-time allowance of 100 AI credits rather than a monthly one, 5 GB of storage and a 1 GB cap per upload. Exports drop to 720p with a Descript watermark in the bottom-right corner, and web-link videos are limited to 1 hour. Upgrading later removes the watermark only from future exports, so anything you export on Free stays marked. Our guide to [Descript's Free plan](/articles/is-descript-free) covers the rest of its limits.

That makes the last week of a paid cycle the time to finish your exports. **Render the final 1080p or 4K versions you need before the switch**, because the same project exported a day later comes out at 720p with a watermark. Unused media minutes and AI credits from the final cycle do not roll over; they simply reset away. We could not find what Descript does with a Drive that holds more than the 5 GB Free allows. If your Drive is larger, ask support before the cycle ends rather than after.

### Top-ups and legacy plans

Prepaid top-ups survive the cancellation but sit idle. Top-ups exist only on Creator and Business; the remaining balance is preserved, cannot be spent once the Drive is on Free, and its original 12-month expiry keeps counting down from the purchase date. Legacy plans are the second trap. Descript moved Legacy and Sunset subscribers to its current plans on the first billing date after 17 November 2025, with annual subscribers moving at their next renewal. Most kept their price, though some legacy prices could rise to current pricing. Once you leave a legacy plan, you cannot return to it.

> ⚠ **Removing an Editor keeps the charge:** Billing continues for a freed Editor seat until the Drive owner reduces the seat count in the Plan tab.

## Refunds: 48 hours for a plan, 7 days for a seat

Descript's refund policy has four rules: plan refunds within 48 hours of the invoice date, Editor seat refunds within 7 days of the invoice date, no refunds at all on top-ups of media minutes or AI credits, and no prorated refund when you cancel or downgrade mid-term, because the plan simply runs to the end of the term. Requests go to support from the email address on the Descript account, which is one more reason to act from the owner's login.

The stakes depend on your billing period. On annual billing the whole year is charged upfront, so a single Creator seat commits $288 for the year, by our arithmetic. Miss the 48-hour window and that money is spent, even if you cancel on day three. On monthly billing, a missed window costs one month. **The 48-hour clock starts at the invoice, not when you notice the charge**, so put the renewal date in your calendar a few days ahead. The worst case is a Creator or Business top-up bought just before cancelling: it is non-refundable and idle once the Drive is on Free.

> 💡 **Export finals before the cycle ends:** Your paid export quality lasts until the billing cycle closes; after the Drive moves to Free, exports come out at 720p with a Descript watermark.

## Cut the bill without cancelling

Often the real goal is a smaller bill, not zero. Descript prices every plan per Editor seat, and the seat count is where most quiet overcharges come from. **Removing an Editor frees the seat, but billing continues for it until you reduce the seat count yourself** [3]. Reduce seats through Edit current plan in the Plan tab. Turning an Editor into a Viewer also frees the seat, and Viewers are free, but as with removal, the bill drops only once you lower the seat count there. Reviewers who only watch and comment never need a paid seat.

A worked case shows the size of the trap. A full Creator team of 3 on monthly billing pays $105 a month. Remove two Editors without lowering the seat count and the bill stays at $105 a month. Lower the count to one seat and it falls to $35 a month from the next billing cycle, since downgrades apply at the end of the current one. Setting seats to one limits editing to the Drive owner, which suits a solo creator keeping a team Drive alive.

### Downgrade or switch billing instead

A cheaper plan is the middle path, and the plan gates decide whether it fits. Hobbyist allows only 1 Editor seat and 10 media hours a month, and it drops 4K export, top-ups and timeline export. Hobbyist costs $24 per person a month billed monthly, against $35 for Creator. If you record or upload more than 1 hour a month, Free will not cover you. Eligible students, educators and nonprofits can move to the EDU/NFP plan at $8 per Editor a month billed annually or $12 billed monthly, the only discount on offer.

If you are unsure how long you will stay, compare billing periods before renewing. For one seat over the next year, monthly billing beats annual on Hobbyist for 7 months or fewer and ties at 8 months ($192 both ways). On Creator, monthly wins up to 8 months ($280 billed monthly against $288 a year billed annually); on Business, up to 9 months ($585 billed monthly against $600 a year billed annually), by our arithmetic. Switching from annual to monthly takes effect at the start of the next cycle. Our [pricing breakdown](/articles/descript-pricing) has the full plan grid.

## Deleting your account instead

Deleting the account is the nuclear option, and it behaves differently from cancelling. It is irreversible and does not trigger a refund; the active subscription is cancelled immediately and unused time is forfeited [4]. Deletion removes every project, composition, media file, transcript and invoice, along with every Drive owned by that email. If you are still inside the 48-hour plan or 7-day seat refund window, contact support before deleting. Team members must be removed from the Drive first.

Prepare in two moves. Download your invoices, because Descript does not email them and only the Drive owner can see them in the app. Then export any media you want to keep. Deleted projects sit in Trash for 30 days before permanent removal, and the privacy policy says some information may be retained where the law or legitimate business purposes require it. To delete a single Drive but keep your account, contact support. Handing a team over rather than leaving? Support can transfer Drive ownership instead, though invoice history is lost in a transfer.

SquadCast follows the same path. A SquadCast subscription bought through Descript is cancelled with the Descript downgrade flow, while an older standalone SquadCast subscription is cancelled in SquadCast and stays active until the end of its own cycle. A failed card is no shortcut either: past-due accounts get a grace period with Stripe retry emails before the subscription drops back to Free.

## FAQ

**Can I pause my Descript subscription instead of cancelling?**

We found no documented pause option in Descript's billing flow; a help page mentions paused subscriptions only in passing. The documented route is a downgrade to Free, which you can undo any time before the billing cycle ends.

**Can I remove my card from Descript after cancelling?**

Billing details can only be removed from accounts without an active paid subscription, so wait until the cycle ends and the Drive is on Free. Only the Drive owner can update or remove the payment method.

**If I come back later, can I get my old legacy plan price back?**

No. Descript says that once you leave a Legacy or Sunset plan you cannot return to it; coming back means choosing one of the current plans at current prices.

**Can a team member cancel the Descript plan for the owner?**

No. Only the Drive owner manages billing, and support processes cancellations only from the Drive owner's email address. If the owner has left, support handles Drive ownership transfers on paid Drives.

## The bottom line

Cancelling Descript takes a minute from the Plan tab, but the money rules reward speed and the details catch people. Only the Drive owner can cancel, each Drive cancels separately, and the plan runs to the end of the cycle before dropping to Free at 720p with a watermark. Refunds exist only inside 48 hours for a plan and 7 days for a seat, never for top-ups. If you want a smaller bill rather than none, cut the seat count or step down a plan before you walk away.
