To remove Read AI from a meeting you are in right now, type `Read stop` in the meeting chat. The assistant leaves and still builds a report from what it heard. Type `Opt out` instead and it leaves and deletes everything it captured, with no report. Anyone in the call can do this, with no Read account and no host approval, and one opt-out stops the recording for everyone [1]. Keeping it out of future meetings is a different job. The person who uses Read has to change their auto-join setting or disconnect their calendar. **Cancelling a paid plan does neither**; it only moves the account to Free.

**15 minutes** — Turn off Add Read on Read's Calendar page at least 15 minutes before a meeting starts.

- **Anyone** — can type Opt out in a bot-mode meeting chat; no account needed
- **All events** — Read's default auto-join once a calendar is connected
- **Enterprise+** — domain capture; requires 5+ licenses

## Stop it in the meeting you are in now

When the assistant joins, it shows up as a participant (by default named read.ai meeting notes) and posts a chat message. That message carries a recording notice, the name of the person who invited it, both chat commands and an opt-out link. So the tools to remove it are already on your screen. The two commands behave very differently. `Read stop` ends the recording but keeps a report up to that moment, which suits a call where the first half was routine. `Opt out`, or the link, wipes the whole session. Choose by what you want kept.

The host has a third route: remove the assistant like any other participant, from the participants list. That works on all three platforms, with one catch covered below. In Teams, removal still generates a report. If the goal is that nothing from the call survives, the opt-out command is the only in-meeting step that guarantees deletion. It also works when you are not the host. Every attendee should know it.

> 💡 **Pick Opt out for sensitive calls:** Read stop and a host removal in Teams both leave a report behind. Only Opt out, or the opt-out link, deletes everything Read captured.

## Keep Read AI out of all your future meetings

Future meetings are controlled by the Read user, not by the other attendees. In Read, go to Account Settings, then Meeting Recording, then Auto-Join Preferences. The default joins all calendar events with any participants. You can narrow it to meetings you host, to internal participants only (available for work email accounts), or switch auto-join off completely [2]. With it off, Read stays out of every meeting until you flip the Add Read toggle for one on the Calendar page. A separate setting, Auto-Join Unscheduled Meetings, sends Read into Google Meet and Zoom calls you start that are not on your calendar.

For a single meeting, keep auto-join as it is and turn off Add Read for that event on the Calendar page. For a recurring meeting you can pick this meeting only or the whole series. Do it at least 15 minutes before the start. Read normally joins 3 to 5 minutes early, so a last-second change can arrive too late.

To stop Read joining anything without deleting the account, disconnect all your calendars and your Zoom account. Read AI's help calls this deactivating: the account and past reports stay. Permissions can also be revoked from the Integrations page in Account Settings. Uninstalling goes further. For Zoom, open the Zoom App Marketplace, choose Manage, then Installed Apps, find Read and click Remove; Read can then join no Zoom meeting, automatically or manually. For the Teams integration, click Disconnect next to Microsoft Teams on Read's Integrations page. Read AI's help gives no special uninstall steps for the browser extension or desktop app. To erase the account and the reports it owns, follow our guide on [how to delete a Read AI account](/articles/how-to-delete-read-ai-account).

> ⚠ **Cancelling does not stop it:** Downgrading only moves the account to Free, and auto-join keeps running. Change Auto-Join Preferences or disconnect your calendars and Zoom account instead.

## Teams, Zoom and Google Meet, step by step

### Microsoft Teams

In Teams, Read waits in the lobby as an unverified guest, and the host can select Deny on the lobby notification. Once it is in, the host opens the People panel, clicks the three dots next to the notetaker and chooses Remove from meeting [3]. A report is still created. Read can join a Teams meeting even when the person who invited it is absent. It cannot join Teams calls started from Chat, only scheduled meetings.

### Zoom

Zoom changed the rules in November 2026. Every meeting bot must now be authorized by a signed-in Zoom user, so Read joins a Zoom call only if its user has connected a Zoom account and is in the meeting, signed in to that account. It can no longer be sent alone. That is why a host may see no admit request at all. To remove it, the host opens Participants, clicks the three dots next to Read and selects Remove. Read also asks the host for recording permission. If the host denies it, or local recording to computer files is off, Read gets a restricted-data error and leaves after a few minutes.

### Google Meet

Meet has two modes. In agent mode Read is a participant: only the host or co-host can remove it, while others deny entry from the People panel or use the chat commands. Native recording works differently. No bot joins, and chat commands do nothing. Someone must approve a consent pop-up first, and closing it without confirming keeps Read from recording. During the call, any participant can click the Read AI logo and choose Stop sharing to end it with a report, or open the Read AI app from the 9-dot grid to opt out and delete the recording. Meeting tools, then Add-ons, then Read AI, then Stop recording offers Generate report or Delete recording.

## If you never invited Read AI

The assistant is there because someone on the invite uses Read and has it set to record. The chat notice names that person, and the report lookup in Read AI's Account and Privacy Center shows the inviter's first name. Asking them to switch off Add Read, or to narrow their auto-join, is the only fix that lasts. Your own settings cannot reach their account. Several attendees with Read can each bring an assistant, unless one marks the report private beforehand, which stops others adding Read to that meeting.

Before a meeting, you may get an email with an opt-out button if the organizer belongs to a paid Workspace that has Advance Notice turned on. It goes to invitees outside that Workspace, with a reminder 24 hours ahead, and one opt-out stops Read recording that meeting for everyone. It may not arrive if Read is added less than an hour before, and a user can still add Read manually after the start. After a meeting, the Account and Privacy Center lets you request deletion of a report. The request goes to the report owner, and nothing is deleted unless that owner acts.

Desktop and mobile recordings are the blind spot. Read is not a participant there, so nobody else sees it. Chat commands do not apply. The desktop app offers its user a disclosure message with an opt-out link that lets anyone opt out and have the recording deleted, but it works only if the user shares it. Consent is the user's job. If you suspect a colleague is recording locally, ask directly.

## Admin controls for a whole organization

Each platform has its own lever, and Read AI's help documents only some of them. In Zoom, account owners and admins decide whether Zoom Apps are enabled and whether Read is pre-approved for individual users, groups or everyone in the Zoom App Marketplace. In Google Workspace, an admin can block Read by disabling the Meet Media API for third-party apps, and a host can turn off third-party apps for a single meeting. An admin can also deny a user's Outlook calendar connection request.

Teams is thinner. Read AI's help says Read joins only when guest access and anonymous users joining meetings are enabled, and that it cannot pass Teams' human verification check for anonymous users. It documents no Teams admin center steps to block Read, so we print none. Inside Read itself, Workspace admins can limit auto-join (members may then pick only the admin's choice or something stricter), disable desktop and mobile recording, and turn on Advance Notice. Domain capture, on Enterprise+ (which requires 5+ licenses), stops anyone on a verified company domain from creating a Read account unless invited to the Workspace. Corporate IT cannot delete an employee's account: Read AI deletes accounts only at the account holder's own request.

## Why Read AI joined your meeting

Read AI says it never joins a meeting on its own. It joins because someone with a Read account on the invite added it, usually through calendar auto-join. When a new user connects a calendar, onboarding marks All calendar events as recommended, the recap goes to people with access by default, and during the 7-day Enterprise trial Read joins all of a new user's meetings by default. Read never joins meetings its user is not invited to, and meetings on a shared calendar are never on by default.

Then it spreads. Depending on the sender's settings, Read shares the summary with all attendees, and people without an account get an invitation to sign up to view it. Read AI's help says this is how accounts are often created, and an uninvited assistant is a recurring theme in Trustpilot complaints. If Read keeps appearing after you switched it off or deleted your account, another invitee is bringing it, or you have a second Read account on another email address. Read AI's Account Lookup tool finds that second account [4].

> 💡 **Check unscheduled meetings too:** Auto-Join Unscheduled Meetings is a separate setting that sends Read into Google Meet and Zoom calls you start outside your calendar.

## FAQ

**Will Read AI join a meeting if the person who uses it does not attend?**

On Teams it can, though the host may need to admit it, and on Google Meet it can join as an agent. On Zoom it cannot: the Read user must be in the meeting, signed in to the connected Zoom account.

**How long does Read AI wait to be let into a meeting?**

Read leaves if it is not admitted within 10 minutes of the scheduled start, or if nobody joins within 10 minutes.

**Does Read AI capture the typed meeting chat?**

No. Read AI's help says Read does not capture typed meeting chat.

**Can I opt out of Read AI summaries in a Teams channel?**

Yes. Anyone in the channel, even without a Read AI account, can opt out of channel summaries with the link in each summary message.

## The bottom line

Removing Read AI takes one chat command in the moment and one settings change for good. In any bot-mode meeting, `Opt out` deletes the session and `Read stop` keeps a partial report; the host can also remove it. For your own meetings, Auto-Join Preferences or a disconnected calendar is the real fix, since cancelling only moves you to Free. When a colleague brings it, ask them, use Advance Notice where it exists, and leave organization-wide blocks to your Zoom, Google Workspace or Teams admins.
