Canva is a legitimate company and a safe product to use, with two caveats that have nothing to do with fraud: its
billing policies are strict, and its default privacy setting lets it use your content to train AI models. This guide
covers who runs Canva, how large it is, what reviewers say, how it handles your data and your rights, and the scams
that use Canva's name. Everything comes from Canva's own pages, read for the US market on 9 October 2026, from
independent review platforms, and from press coverage, each cited.

## The short answer

Yes. Canva is a large, established company with more than 265 million monthly users and over 31 million paying
customers at the end of 2025 [80]. The product is rated 4.73 on GetApp from 13,458 ratings [78] and 4.9 in
the US App Store from more than 3.5 million ratings [79]. The complaints that do exist are about billing and
refunds, not about the product being a scam. The scams to watch for are fake Canva sellers, not Canva itself.

## Who runs Canva

Canva is an Australian company. Its Terms of Use name the Canva entity that contracts with you according to your billing
address, with legal notice addresses in the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia, the last at 110 Kippax St,
Surry Hills, NSW 2010 [10]. In February 2026 its co-founder and chief operating officer told TechCrunch the company
had reached US$4 billion in annual recurring revenue [80].

## How big it is

Canva reported more than 265 million monthly active users in 2025, a 20% rise over the year, and over 31 million paid
users [80]. The company has acquired other tools, including Affinity, whose professional apps it now gives away
free with a Canva account [55]. Scale is not proof of good behaviour, but it is proof that you are not dealing with
a fly-by-night operator.

## What users say

Ratings differ by platform, and the difference is informative.

| Platform | Rating | Count |
|---|---|---|
| GetApp | 4.73 | 13,458 |
| US App Store | 4.9 | 3,566,983 |
| Trustpilot | 4.0 | 7,653 |

GetApp and the App Store measure satisfaction with the product. Trustpilot draws more complaints. In our sample of 100
recent Trustpilot reviews, the average was 3.74, with 55 five-star and 23 one-star reviews [77].

## What the complaints are about

In that sample, the themes were clear. Support appeared in 17 reviews, ten of them negative. Billing appeared in 11 and
cancellation in 10, and every billing or cancellation review was one or two stars [77]. Reviews about the product
itself were six positive out of eight. One reviewer wrote: "I canceled my account and requested a refund, which turned
into a complete nightmare." [77]

These are complaints about policy, not about a fake service. Canva's help centre states the policy plainly: "In most
cases, Canva subscriptions aren’t refundable, as outlined in our Terms of Use." [12] Knowing that before you pay
avoids most of the grief.

> ⚠ **undefined:** Plans from unauthorised sellers can get an account suspended.

## The 2024 price change

Canva's reputation took a hit in 2024 when it raised prices for old Teams customers. TechCrunch reported five-person
plans moving from US$119.99 to US$500 a year, with 40% off the first year [81]. After the backlash, Canva kept the
old price for existing Teams subscribers and published a Pricing Promise that includes at least 60 days' notice of
price changes [9]. The Terms of Use, which are the contract, set the floor lower: an increase "will not apply until
your next renewal or thirty (30) days after notice, whichever is later" [10].

## The Pricing Promise in full

The promise Canva published after the 2024 backlash has five commitments: plans that stay affordable, including free
products for individuals, nonprofits and schools; more value through continued investment; "at least 60 days’ notice of
any price changes"; regional prices that reflect local economic conditions; and no hidden fees [9]. Two caveats: the
Terms of Use set a 30-day floor for notice [10], and prices on the US page exclude tax, which is added at checkout
[2]. Neither is hidden, but both are easy to miss.

> ⚠ **undefined:** Subscriptions are in most cases not refundable.

## Regional prices, and the Australian change

The 2024 price change was not only American. TechCrunch reported that in Australia a flat AUD 39.99 a month for up to five
users became AUD 13.50 per user [81]. Canva has since introduced lower-priced subscriptions in countries such as
Pakistan, Uruguay, Morocco and Jamaica [80]. A legitimate company can price differently by country; the practical point
is that a price quoted by a friend abroad may not be your price.

## How Canva uses your data

Canva's privacy policy allows it to analyse "your activity, content, media uploads and related data" to train its
algorithms and AI models, and gives you a setting in your privacy controls to manage the use of your data for AI
training [47]. Education accounts are excluded: "We will not use User Content of Canva Education for AI training."
[47] The Magic Write page says its model is trained on public web pages and "is not trained on Canva documents or
designs" [48].

If you upload anything confidential, switch the AI training setting off before you start. It is the one privacy default
we would change on every account.

## Sharing settings

Canva's privacy policy explains that a design shared with "anyone with the link" can be accessed by anyone on the
internet who has the link, and edited if you allow it, and that a link may be passed on by its recipients [47]. For
designs with personal or confidential information Canva itself does not recommend that setting [47]. Share with
named people instead.

## Security features

Organisations on Enterprise can set up single sign-on with SAML 2.0 after verifying their domain [70], and choose whether new data is stored in the US
or the EU [71]. Canva's Data Processing Addendum commits it to give at least 30 days' notice before adding or
replacing a subprocessor [72]. These are the controls a procurement team expects; most of them are Enterprise-only.

## Schools and children

Canva Education states that its education and district offerings are FERPA and COPPA compliant, that Canva is a signatory
of the National Data Privacy Agreement, and that it is committed to GDPR compliance [2]. "Canva never uses student
data to train AI models." [26] Content libraries for Education are filtered with blocked search terms, machine
learning and human review to remove material that is not safe for school [2].

## Your rights in what you make

You own your designs, subject to the rights in any Canva content you used. Canva's licence for its content is
non-exclusive: you can use photos, graphics, fonts and music in your designs, and sell original designs, but you cannot
resell Canva content on its own [42]. Pro content is licensed for a single design [43]. AI output may not give you
exclusive rights, and Canva warns that depicting brands or recognisable characters can infringe [45]. Canva follows
the DMCA and has a policy of terminating repeat infringers [127].

## Who owns what you make

"Generally speaking, if you’re the creator of an original design, you’re also its copyright holder." [44] Your ownership
is subject to the rights in any Canva stock content you used, which you hold under licence [44]. Between you and Canva, you
own images you create with Canva's AI image tools, although copyright protection for them depends on your local law [44].
One practical trap: print-on-demand services that make you confirm you own every element of a design cannot be used for
designs containing Canva content [44].

## What can get an account suspended

Canva's Acceptable Use Policy rules out content that incites discrimination or violence and activities that are illegal, and
Canva may suspend or terminate accounts in response [129]. Its intellectual property policy follows the DMCA, offers a counter
notice if content was removed in error, and terminates repeat infringers; Canva may also limit or terminate accounts that
infringe others' rights without repeat infringement [127]. Plans bought from unauthorised sellers can also lead to downgrade,
suspension or termination [21]. None of this is unusual. It is worth knowing that loss of designs is among the stated
consequences, which is a reason to keep your own copies.

## Scams that use Canva's name

The real risk is not Canva but people selling Canva. Canva's help centre says legitimate plans are bought through
official Canva websites, apps and authorised sellers, or granted through Canva's education and nonprofit programmes, and
that "Canva doesn’t offer lifetime plans" [21]. Plans bought from unauthorised sellers go against the Terms of Use and
can lead to account downgrade, suspension or termination, including loss of designs [21]. Canva does not refund
them [21].

Apps on the App Store or Google Play that are not Canva's official apps will not accept your Canva login [21]. If a
site offers lifetime Pro for a few dollars, walk away.

## How to check you are using the real Canva

Canva's help centre lists the legitimate ways to hold a plan: bought through official Canva websites, apps and authorised
sellers; granted through Canva Education by application or by a teacher; or through promotions announced on Canva's official
social accounts, emails or newsletters [21]. Apps in the App Store or Google Play that are not Canva's own will not accept
your Canva login [21]. If a seller asks for your password to "activate" Pro, that is not how Canva works.

## Phishing on free Canva domains

Canva publishes websites on free Canva domains, and it blocks reuse of old ones: free domains "previously used by another
brand can’t be reused, even if inactive, to prevent phishing" [118]. Still, treat a login page on a free website
domain with the same suspicion as any other link in an unexpected email. Canva's own sign-in lives on canva.com.

## Charges you do not recognise

If a Canva charge surprises you, check the usual causes before assuming fraud. You may have two Canva accounts, created
with different sign-in methods; your bank may have kept a subscription alive after a card expired; or a failed payment
may have gone through after several attempts [22]. Canva charges appear as Canva, as Canva with an invoice number,
or as an Apple or Google charge [15]. If none of those explains it, contact Canva with the invoice number.

## Reviews in their own words

Positive reviews in our Trustpilot sample are about the product: "I love the templates, the Magic Studio tools, and the smooth
experience." [77] Another praised "Prompt support that quickly resolved my video export issue" [77]. Negative reviews are
about money and access, and one App Store reviewer pointed to performance: "I know other reviewers were complaining about the
lagging and crashing problem as well" [79], especially in video editing. That mix, a strong product with rough edges in
billing and heavier workloads, is consistent across every source we read.

## Deleting your data

You can delete a Canva account from Settings. Cancel any paid plan first. Deletion removes your designs, folders, templates,
uploads, and the teams and apps you created, and becomes final 14 days after the request; logging in during those 14 days
cancels it [128]. Accounts managed by an organisation cannot be deleted by the user. Deleted designs sit in Trash for 30
days before that [93].

## Is it safe for business use?

For a small business, yes, with the settings above changed. For a regulated organisation, check the plan: SSO, data residency,
audit logs and IP indemnity are Enterprise features [2] [71], and Business has none of them. A law firm or a health
provider that needs those controls should talk to Canva's sales team rather than buy Business seats online.

## FAQ

**Is Canva a legit company?**

Yes. Canva is an Australian company with more than 265 million monthly users and over 31 million paying users at the end of 2025.

**Is Canva safe for kids?**

Canva Education is FERPA and COPPA compliant, filters its libraries for schools, and does not use student data to train AI models.

## Our verdict

Canva is legitimate and safe for business and personal use. Treat it like any subscription with a strict refund policy:
read the trial terms, cancel before renewal if you do not want to continue, and buy only from Canva. Switch off AI
training on your content if anything you upload is confidential, and share designs with named people rather than open
links.
