## What KWFinder is, and how to get in

KWFinder is the keyword research tool inside Mangools, and it is the reason most people sign up. It finds long-tail keywords and shows their search volumes next to a **Keyword Difficulty** score [13]. Mangools built it in 2014 to surface keywords with low SEO difficulty, and it remains the core of the bundle. You cannot buy it on its own: it comes with every plan, and its difficulty score depends on data from SERPChecker, a sibling tool in the same package. This tutorial walks through each feature and its limits, based on Mangools' own pages as of 12 October 2026.

Getting access costs nothing at first. A free account gives limited KWFinder access with no card, and new accounts also get ten days of Free+, which adds 50 keywords tracked daily. That means a new user can research keywords in KWFinder and watch the same keywords move in SERPWatcher before paying anything. Paid plans start at US$49 a month [1]. **Try it free first.** With a tool like this, the interface decides more than the feature list, and you will know within a session whether it suits the way you work.

> ⚠ **KD ignores content quality:** Keyword Difficulty is a link metric. Open the SERP panel before accepting a keyword, because a low score can hide a first page full of highly relevant specialist pages.

## Your first search: seed, location and idea source

The basic loop is simple. Type a seed keyword or a competitor domain, read search volume, trend and Keyword Difficulty, save the best ideas to a list and send them to SERPWatcher for tracking [183]. For a keyword search, you enter the seed, choose a location and a language, and click Find keywords. A keyword must be 2 to 80 characters long, with at most 10 words.

### Always set the location

Location changes the results, so set it every time. A coffee machine shop in Chicago that leaves the location on Anywhere sees worldwide volumes, while setting Chicago returns smaller local numbers that match the customers it can actually serve. KWFinder supports research down to city level, so local businesses should research their city, not the country. Volumes are small. Intent is strong. Mangools' pages disagree on coverage, citing more than 65,000 locations in one place and more than 50,000 locations and 40 languages in the 2025 guide, but either way it is wide.

### Three places ideas come from

Suggestions come from three sources. Related keywords is the default, while Autocomplete and Questions draw on Google's Autocomplete feature. Questions suit content planning and AI prompts, and Autocomplete suits long-tail hunting, so try all three on the same seed. How many ideas you get per lookup is less clear. The plan data allows 200 related keyword rows per lookup on Basic and 700 on Premium and Agency, while the 2025 guide promises up to 10,000 suggestions depending on the plan. The numbers differ. Ask support which one applies to your plan before you count on it.

## Reading the metrics table

Depending on the search type, the table shows trend, position, search volume, estimated visits, CPC, PPC and Keyword Difficulty. Hovering over a column header shows its definition. Seven columns sounds like a lot, but you learn them once. Trend shows search volume over the last 12 months, plus a Keyword Interest Growth percentage that compares recent months with the same months a year earlier. A keyword whose average volume rose from 1,000 to 1,500 against the same months a year earlier shows Keyword Interest Growth of 50%, a signal to publish before competitors notice the rise.

Search volume is the average monthly exact-match volume over the last 12 months, and you can switch it to 6 or 3 months. That switch matters for seasonal keywords. A Christmas gift idea can show a 12-month average far below its December peak, so the 3-month view taken in December gives a truer picture of demand when it counts. Keep in mind that the numbers are not live. In the FAQ's words, "We usually have the data with a one-month lag." [5] For very fresh trends, check other sources; for planning, the lag is fine.

### Estimated visits, CPC and PPC

Estimated visits appear in search by domain and are built from SERP positions, estimated click-through rates and search volumes. They are estimates. Use them to rank a competitor's pages, not to predict your own traffic. N/A under Search, CPC or PPC simply means there is not enough data, usually because volume is very low or zero.

CPC is the average cost per click in paid search, updated weekly, and PPC is the paid competition level from 0 to 100. A high CPC signals commercial value. A keyword with a CPC of several dollars and moderate volume can be worth more to an affiliate site than one with ten times the volume and almost no advertiser competition.

> 💡 **Filter before you score:** Set a maximum KD and a minimum volume before clicking suggestions. Each click to score a keyword uses one SERP lookup.

## Keyword Difficulty, and why you still open the SERP

### What the score measures

Keyword Difficulty runs from 0 to 100 and estimates how hard it is to reach Google's first page. To build it, Mangools first computes the Link Profile Strength of each first-page URL from Moz's Domain and Page Authority and Majestic's Citation and Trust Flow. It then combines high- and low-authority URLs, because relevant weak pages can outrank strong ones [183]. **It is a link metric.** Content quality is not in it. A keyword with KD 25 can therefore still be hard if the first page is full of highly relevant specialist pages, and the score says nothing about search intent either. Read it together with the results it describes.

That is what the SERP panel is for. Clicking a keyword opens the SERP analysis on the right, the same data SERPChecker shows, with metrics for each ranking URL. This is where difficulty becomes concrete. Look at who ranks, then decide whether you can beat them.

### Relative Keyword Difficulty

You can switch KD to Relative Keyword Difficulty, which re-scores each keyword against the Link Profile Strength of your own site or URL. A new blog with almost no links may see a keyword rated 30 on KD look much harder on RKD, while an established site with strong links may see the same keyword become easier. That is the point of the metric. Switch to it once your site has some links behind it.

### Every score costs a lookup

Here is the trap most new users fall into. Clicking a keyword from Suggestions to generate a real-time difficulty score counts as one SERP lookup [5]. Fifty clicks use half of Basic's daily SERP lookups, and scoring 100 suggestions one by one would use all of them in a single session, leaving none for SERPChecker or later research that day. **Filter first, then click.**

## Researching competitors

### Search by domain

Enter a competitor's domain or URL and KWFinder shows the keywords that bring it the most traffic. Coverage is another place where Mangools' pages disagree: the FAQ lists 17 supported countries, while the guide says 90 locations. The row limit is the real constraint. Basic shows 25 rows, while Premium and Agency show 2,000 [1]. Premium's 2,000 rows reveal the long tail, where smaller sites usually find their openings. For serious competitor research, Premium is the minimum. One detail confuses people here. In search by domain, the left table shows a position from the last database check, while the right panel shows a fresh SERP for your settings. The two can differ. The right one is current, so trust it.

### Competitor suggestions and Keyword Gap

Give KWFinder one competitor and it suggests others to analyze, which speeds up mapping a niche. Check that they are real rivals: directories and marketplaces often rank for the same keywords as a small business without competing with it, so their keyword lists are better used for ideas than for gap analysis. The Keyword Gap tool takes your site and up to five competitors and lists the keywords they rank for and you do not. Comparing your site with five rivals at once can surface hundreds of missing topics in one report, so filter them by Keyword Difficulty and volume before any become content briefs. Running it quarterly keeps the picture current.

## Filtering, lists, imports and exports

KWFinder lets you filter out unprofitable keywords by volume, difficulty, CPC and more. Set a maximum KD and a minimum volume before you start scrolling. The list shrinks to real candidates worth spending lookups on. This habit alone keeps Basic workable. Saved keywords go into lists, which you can edit, download or delete, or send in full to SERPWatcher for rank tracking. Lists keep projects separate, and named by topic they become your content plan. Watch the tracking budget, though. A blogger who saves 50 keywords into five topic lists can send each list to SERPWatcher, but tracking all 50 on mobile and desktop would already use 100 of Basic's 200 tracked keywords.

Imports work the other way: you bring a list you already have and get metrics for it. The limits are up to 200 keywords 100 times a day on Basic, 700 keywords 500 times on Premium, and 700 keywords 1,200 times on Agency. Each import counts as one keyword lookup, and difficulty scoring still draws on SERP lookups, so plan imports around both budgets.

Exports go out as a CSV file from the suggestions table or from a list, or straight to the clipboard. If Excel shows garbled text, use its Import feature with UTF-8 and a comma as the delimiter. It is a known quirk. Exports are also the safest backup before canceling a plan, because keyword lists live inside the account and a downgrade to Free keeps much lower limits.

## Budgeting lookups on Basic, Premium and Agency

Basic gives 100 keyword lookups and 100 SERP lookups a day, and the count resets 24 hours after the first request [1]. Premium gives 500 and Agency 1,200. Most bloggers fit comfortably inside Basic. Teams sharing an account often do not, because sub-users on Premium and Agency share the parent account's limits. Four people on Premium share 500 lookups a day, so someone has to coordinate who researches when. Agency is the other answer: its 1,200 daily lookups shared by six people give each about 200, double what a single Basic user gets, for US$89.90 a month billed annually.

> 💡 **Switch volume to 3 months:** For seasonal keywords, the 3-month view shows demand at the time it matters, where the 12-month average can sit far below the peak.

## Three workflows worth copying

### A ten-minute first session

Search your main topic, switch to Questions, filter KD under 30, open five keywords in the SERP panel and save three to a list. That costs 1 keyword lookup and about 5 SERP lookups. On the free plan it costs nothing, and on Basic it leaves 99 keyword lookups and 95 SERP lookups for the rest of the day. **Ten minutes is enough** to tell whether KWFinder fits.

### A weekly routine for a new blog

Pick a seed topic, open Questions, filter to KD under 30, sort by volume, score the top 20, save the best 10 to a list and send them to SERPWatcher. Long-tail queries like these often combine low KD with clear intent, which is the approach Mangools itself promotes and the easiest ground for a new site. Repeat it weekly. Over a month, four such sessions produce about 40 vetted keywords, enough for a content calendar of one or two posts a week for a small site, while staying well inside Basic's daily limits.

### Competitor research for a freelancer

Run search by domain on a competitor, sort by estimated visits, open Keyword Gap with up to five rivals, and save the missing topics to a list. This workflow needs Premium's 2,000 rows; Basic's 25 rows only tease. For a freelancer pitching three prospects a week, the jump from Basic to Premium costs US$15 a month on annual billing, which is small next to the value of seeing a prospect's full keyword footprint.

## Errors, quirks and common mistakes

The Autocomplete and Questions tabs sometimes fail because Google temporarily blocks requests. A few minutes' wait usually fixes it, and meanwhile Suggestions and search by domain keep working. It is a Google limit, not a bug. On data, the FAQ says KWFinder uses multiple data providers alongside Mangools' own processing, which, together with the one-month lag, is why current-month volumes never show up. Most wasted time comes from four avoidable habits: not setting a location, clicking every suggestion and burning SERP lookups before filtering, trusting KD without checking who actually ranks, and expecting current-month volumes from data that lags by about a month. Slow down. Each of them is cheap to fix.

## Beyond the app: extension, API and custom exports

The free SEO browser extension shows keyword positions, exact search volumes and other metrics for the site you are visiting, which is handy for quick checks without opening KWFinder. The API page lists KWFinder endpoints for keyword suggestions, search volume history, CPC, difficulty, keyword gap, competitor analysis and imports. Access starts with a free account token, but API pricing is not published, so ask before you scale.

For very large keyword lists, Mangools also offers custom exports of bulk search volumes and up to 700 keyword ideas per seed, priced on request. And according to Mangools' AI guide, the Questions and Autocomplete tabs also feed prompts to AI Search Watcher, because question keywords mirror how people ask AI.

## KWFinder next to Semrush and Ahrefs

Semrush's SEO plan includes keyword research and competitor analysis for US$139 a month, while KWFinder on Premium costs US$69. On annual billing, KWFinder within Mangools Premium costs US$538.80 a year against US$1,407.96 for Semrush's SEO plan, so the simpler tool costs about 38% of the deeper one. Semrush's free plan allows 10 keyword research queries a day. Ahrefs Lite costs US$129 a month, with Keywords Explorer and 750 weekly-tracked keywords, while KWFinder on Premium includes rank tracking for 700 keywords. **Semrush is deeper and Ahrefs has more data.** KWFinder has the gentler learning curve, and our [Mangools vs Semrush comparison](/articles/mangools-vs-semrush) goes further on that trade.

KWFinder suits bloggers, affiliate marketers and small businesses who want long-tail keywords they can rank for and an interface they can learn in an hour. It is a poorer fit for researchers who need very large keyword exports every day, deep historical data, or many markets beyond KWFinder's coverage. They will hit limits, and larger suites fit them better.

## FAQ

**Is KWFinder free?**

A free Mangools account gives limited access with no card, and new accounts get ten days of Free+. Paid plans start at US$49 a month.

**Can I buy KWFinder on its own?**

No. KWFinder is included in every Mangools plan and cannot be bought alone.

**How is KWFinder Keyword Difficulty calculated?**

From the Link Profile Strength of first-page URLs, using Moz's Domain and Page Authority and Majestic's Citation and Trust Flow. Content quality is not part of it.

**How many lookups does KWFinder allow?**

Basic gives 100 keyword and 100 SERP lookups a day, Premium 500 and Agency 1,200. Limits reset 24 hours after the first request, and sub-users share the parent account's limits.

**Does scoring a keyword use a lookup?**

Yes. Clicking a keyword from Suggestions to generate a real-time difficulty score counts as one SERP lookup.

**How fresh is KWFinder's search volume data?**

Mangools says it usually has the data with a one-month lag, so current-month volumes are not shown.

## The bottom line

KWFinder is the easiest serious keyword tool to learn, with a clear difficulty score and good long-tail sources. On Basic it suits one blogger working alone; competitor research and shared team accounts need Premium or Agency. Set the location on every search, filter before you spend SERP lookups, and read Keyword Difficulty alongside the live SERP rather than on its own.
