**10 items** — The most an Instagram carousel can hold when scheduled through Later, against 20 in the Instagram app.

- **50 posts** — Instagram's cap on auto published posts per profile in a moving 24 hours
- **7 days** — to answer an Instagram DM in the inbox
- **5 hashtags** — per post or Reel since Dec 18, 2025

## What Later needs from your Instagram account

Later started in 2014 as an Instagram scheduler called Latergramme, and Instagram is still the network it fits best. It previews your grid, publishes feed posts, carousels, Reels and Stories, and sends Instagram traffic to a Link in Bio page. This guide covers what each format can do through Later, which plan unlocks which feature, and where Meta's rules cut in. **Start with the profile type**, because it decides almost everything else. Later no longer connects personal Instagram profiles, since Meta retired the Basic Display API those connections relied on. You need a business or creator profile, and switching inside Instagram is free.

A Facebook Page is the second requirement, and it is softer than it looks. You can connect an Instagram profile and publish without one [1]. The linked Page unlocks the Social Inbox, location tagging, hashtag search, Story analytics, product tagging and social listening, and another help article adds Best Time to Post and user tagging. One Page can be linked to only one Instagram profile at a time. The order we would follow:

1. Switch the account to a business or creator profile inside Instagram.
2. Link it to a Facebook Page you manage, one Page per Instagram profile.
3. Connect the profile in Later on desktop and grant every permission requested; missed permissions cause failed posts, disconnects and missing analytics.
4. Connect creator profiles on desktop, because auto publish for them is not supported in the Android app.
5. Give each Instagram profile its own Social Set: Starter includes one, Growth two and Scale six.

## Auto publish or a phone notification: how each format goes out

Later publishes to Instagram in two ways. **Auto publish** sends the post live at its scheduled time with no further work, and it is open only to business and creator profiles. Notification publishing sends a reminder to the Later mobile app, saves the media to your phone and copies the caption, and you finish the post in Instagram yourself. It is the route for Instagram's own music, stickers and filters. It also keeps caption line breaks, which auto published posts often lose. The cost is attention: a notification post you never confirm becomes an unverified post that you must verify, reschedule or discard.

### Single images and carousels

Single-photo posts can be scheduled on every plan, the Free plan included. Carousels need a paid plan and come with two limits. **A carousel through Later holds at most 10 items**, a cap Instagram sets for partner platforms, while the Instagram app allows 20, and the whole carousel carries one caption. Trending audio cannot be added to a carousel inside Later; that happens in Instagram through notification publishing. Auto published Instagram posts are also not shared to Facebook automatically, because Instagram does not allow it. If you want the same post on both networks, schedule it to both profiles.

### Reels, covers and audio

Reels can be scheduled on every plan, and each counts as one post. An auto published Reel can run up to 3 minutes from desktop or iOS, but only 90 seconds from Android. Auto publish takes a single video; a Reel built from several clips goes through notification publishing and must total 1 minute or less. Custom covers up to 10 MB are supported for auto published Reels. **Eligible Instagram audio can be added inside Later** to an auto published Reel on a business or creator profile connected to a Facebook Page. One limit remains: the track always starts at its beginning. If the hook sits mid-song, pick the clip in Instagram instead.

### Stories

Stories need a paid plan and can be scheduled only from desktop. **Auto publish works for Instagram business profiles**; creator profiles must use notification publishing [2]. Stickers, polls, music, links, effects and user or location tags cannot be added in Later, so those Stories also take the notification route. Media needs an aspect ratio between 16:9 and 9:16, videos 60 seconds or shorter. Each Story board counts as one post toward your plan limit. And if one Story in an auto published batch fails, the ones after it fail too. Check each frame first.

> 💡 **Link a Facebook Page first:** Publishing works without one, but the Page unlocks the Social Inbox, location and product tagging, hashtag search and Story analytics. Link it before you connect the profile to Later.

## First comment, tags and products: the extras that need auto publish

Most of the polish around an Instagram post works only when Later publishes it. The first comment is open to business and creator profiles on paid plans, auto published posts only, up to 2,200 characters and 10 user mentions. User and location tags follow the same rule: up to 20 users per post, public profiles only, and business locations, not cities. **The pricing page is stricter than the help center**, limiting user tags to single-image posts and location tags to single-image and video posts. Collaborator invites work on single-photo, carousel and Reels posts, up to 3 per post, from desktop and iOS but not Android.

Product tagging starts on Growth, at $50 a month billed monthly or $37.50 a month billed yearly [3], and Instagram offers product tags only to select business and creator profiles in certain markets, so check eligibility in Instagram first. You can tag up to 5 products per image or Reel and 20 per carousel, not in Stories, and the post must auto publish. Products appear once the profile is linked to a Facebook Page and the Instagram Shop is set up. Instagram approves every product, and Later only shows the status. **A post carrying a product still pending approval fails to publish.** Rejected products cannot be tagged, and gift cards and some variants, such as a specific color, are excluded.

> ⚠ **Pending product tags break posts:** A post tagged with a Shop product that Instagram has not yet approved fails to publish. Check each product's status in Later before you schedule.

## Hashtags under the five-per-post rule

Since December 18, 2025, Instagram allows only 5 hashtags per post or Reel, and some older Later pages still describe the larger allowance. With five slots, choosing matters more than volume. Search-based suggestions work on paid plans for Instagram and Facebook: type a hashtag and Later returns related ones. Automatic suggestions read your caption and propose tags on Growth and higher, on the web, for Instagram only. Saved Captions keeps hashtag sets by category for one-click insertion, so trim each set to five. Hashtag analytics report likes, comments, reach and saves per tag, though Later's pages disagree on which plan includes them.

## Planning the grid, picking times and staying under the cap

The Visual Instagram Planner previews up to 60 upcoming scheduled posts as your grid will look, on free and paid plans, and you rearrange them by dragging, on desktop or in the mobile apps. Drafts show in it only on desktop. On Growth and higher, Share Calendar sends a view-only link to the grid with no login needed; it expires after 48 hours. Best Time to Post is on Starter, Growth and Scale, not Free. For Instagram it gives 7 recurring weekly slots from the last 6 months of engagement. You enable it on desktop, then save the times as Quick Schedule slots for the app.

Instagram itself caps auto publishing at **50 posts per profile in a moving 24 hours** [4]. Notification publishing is not affected. A post that fails on this limit cannot retry; you recreate it and schedule it later, or send it by notification. Your plan's monthly allowance usually bites first: Starter allows 30 posts per profile a month, Growth 180 and Scale unlimited. Posts count when scheduled, not when published, and each Reel, Story board and carousel counts as one. Agencies batching a launch day are the ones who meet both limits.

> 💡 **Convert iPhone photos before uploading:** Later does not accept HEIC files, the default format on many iPhones. Export to JPG or PNG, and avoid 2:3 images if you want the post to auto publish.

## Media files: the specs behind most failed posts

A handful of file rules explain many Instagram failures. Images with a 2:3 aspect ratio cannot auto publish because of API limits, so they go out by notification. Later does not accept HEIC files, which many iPhones produce by default, nor transparent PNGs; use JPG, PNG or BMP. Videos must run between 23 and 60 frames per second, and anything below 23 FPS cannot auto publish. Images larger than 1920 x 1080 or 8 MB are compressed by Instagram. Upload caps rise with the plan: a photo can be 5 MB on Free, 20 MB on Starter and 100 MB on Growth and higher.

Video caps climb the same way, from 25 MB on Free to 512 MB on Starter and 1.5 GB on Growth and higher. Media storage is unlimited from Growth up; for Free and Starter, Later's pages disagree on storage limits. Sources matter too. Google Drive can no longer be connected to the media library, so files stored there must be downloaded and uploaded again; Dropbox and Canva still connect. Alt text is available on all plans, up to 1,000 characters, but for Instagram you add it on desktop only. None of this is hard. It just fails silently if ignored.

## Instagram analytics: what each plan sees, and what Meta removed

Instagram analytics need a business or creator profile. Starter keeps up to 3 months of history, with post performance limited to the last 30 posts. Growth keeps up to 1 year and Scale up to 2 years, and Reel and Story analytics sit on those two plans. Post data keeps updating for 2 weeks after publishing and covers organic results only. Audience demographics appear only for accounts with at least 100 followers. Engagement rate is likes, comments, saves and shares divided by reach. Analytics live on desktop; iOS shows a limited overview and Android none.

**Meta has also taken metrics away.** Its API changes removed profile views, website clicks, total video views, top languages, impressions, initial plays and total plays. Story data has no swipe-ups, profile clicks or sticker taps, and history can be backfilled only to the date you enabled auto publish. Reports come from the dashboards, the weekly Instagram summary email and CSV exports on Starter and up, because Later has no public API and no Zapier connection to pull the data elsewhere. Our [Later analytics guide](/articles/later-analytics) covers the dashboards in depth.

## Answering DMs and comments in the Social Inbox

The Social Inbox is on Growth and Scale only, still marked beta, and runs on desktop. For Instagram it handles direct messages, comments, and mentions or tags; it also covers Facebook messages and comments and TikTok comments, but not TikTok DMs. **Instagram DMs can be answered only within 7 days** of being received, an Instagram API limit, so the inbox suits teams that check it daily. Messages can be assigned to a teammate, but account owners cannot restrict which members see the inbox. Replies appear to come from your own profile, and the Instagram account needs a linked Facebook Page.

## Link in Bio and Partnership Ads

Link in Bio turns the single link in your Instagram bio into a small landing page. It is on every plan, the Free plan with a Later banner that Starter removes. You can attach up to 5 links to each Instagram post, on desktop, including posts published directly in Instagram, and one page can serve both Instagram and TikTok. Partnership Ads belong to the creator campaigns side: a brand-paid promotion of a creator's post, run from the creator's handle, approved by the creator each time. They still need a Facebook login. Our [Later Link in Bio guide](/articles/later-link-in-bio) covers the page itself.

Two more Partnership Ads rules are worth knowing before a brand asks. Since March 2026, creators can apply to and join campaigns with Instagram Login alone, so the Facebook step arrives only when an ad is requested on a live post. The post also needs Instagram's paid partnership label and must be linked to the campaign in Later. Deleting the original post stops the ad. Archiving it does not. Creators who clean up their grid after a campaign should archive sponsored posts rather than delete them, or the brand's paid reach ends with them.

## How Buffer handles the same Instagram jobs

Buffer covers the core formats too: carousels, Reels and Stories, with first comment scheduling on Instagram on its paid plans, and it also sends several Instagram post types out by phone notification. The differences show up around the post. Buffer's community inbox has no Instagram DMs or Story replies, and its Insights has no best time to post or demographics yet. Buffer charges $6 per channel a month billed monthly, or $5 billed yearly on Essentials, and it offers an API on every plan. Our [Buffer vs Later comparison](/articles/buffer-vs-later) sets the two side by side.

## FAQ

No. Later no longer connects personal Instagram profiles after Meta retired the API they used. Switch to a business or creator profile inside Instagram; it is free.

**Can Later auto publish Instagram Stories?**

Yes, on paid plans, scheduled from desktop, for business profiles. Creator profiles, and Stories with stickers, polls, music, links or tags, go through notification publishing in the Later mobile app.

**Can I add music to Reels in Later?**

Yes, eligible Instagram audio can be added to auto published Reels on business or creator profiles connected to a Facebook Page. The track always starts at its beginning.

**Which Later plan do I need for Instagram product tags?**

Growth or Scale. Growth costs $50 a month billed monthly or $37.50 a month billed yearly, and allows up to 5 products per image or Reel and 20 per carousel, on auto published posts only, not Stories. The profile needs an Instagram Shop and a linked Facebook Page, and Instagram offers product tags only to select profiles in certain markets.

**Can I answer Instagram DMs in Later?**

Yes, in the Social Inbox (still in beta) on Growth and Scale, on desktop, once the Instagram profile is linked to a Facebook Page. Instagram only lets you reply to DMs within 7 days of receiving them.

## The bottom line

Later remains one of the most Instagram-centered schedulers available, and it shows in the details: a draggable grid preview, Best Time to Post, first comments, product tags, Reels audio and an inbox that answers Instagram DMs. The limits come mostly from Meta. Personal profiles are out, carousels stop at 10 items, captions hold 5 hashtags, and Stories with stickers or music still need your phone. Set up a business profile linked to a Facebook Page, check your file formats, and choose Growth if you need the inbox, shopping tags, Reel and Story analytics, a second Instagram profile or user, or more than 30 posts per profile a month. Otherwise Starter covers the basics.
