**$240** — a year for Metricool Starter billed annually, covering up to 5 brands, the same bundle a freelancer with five clients needs.

- **$20/mo** — Metricool Starter billed annually, 5 brands
- **$5/channel** — Buffer Essentials a month, billed yearly, first 10 channels
- **$10/mo** — Metricool X add-on per X account

## Brands versus channels: two ways of counting

Metricool and Buffer both schedule posts, report on results and answer comments, yet they bill for completely different things. Metricool sells bundles of brands. A brand holds one profile per network, and Starter costs $25 a month billed monthly or $20 a month billed annually for up to 5 brands, or $45 and $36 for up to 10 brands. Advanced costs $67 a month billed monthly or $53 a month billed annually for up to 15 brands, with larger tiers at 25 and 50 brands [1]. Custom covers anything above 50 brands through sales.

Buffer prices every connected channel. Essentials costs $6 per channel a month billed monthly or $5 billed yearly, which means $60 per channel charged once a year. Team costs $12 per channel a month or $10 billed yearly, $120 per channel a year [2]. On both billing terms the per-channel rate falls with volume, starting at 11 channels. Upgrading from Buffer's free tier bills every connected channel, the first three included, and Start Page counts as a channel. Nonprofits, eligible startups and open-source projects get 50% off any paid plan.

**The unit of sale decides most of this comparison.** A per-channel price looks tiny on the page and grows with every profile you connect. A brand bundle looks larger and stays flat until you cross its limit. So before reading any feature list, count your profiles, the people who need a login, and whether anyone signs off on posts. Those three numbers do more to pick the cheaper tool than any headline price, and the examples below show how quickly the answer flips.

## What three typical buyers would pay

The figures below use list prices only, before tax and before any promo. We picked three common setups and did the sums by our arithmetic. Past ten channels, Buffer's totals use its volume rates, which apply on both billing terms. Treat each case as a pattern rather than a quote. Your own count of profiles and logins is what matters.

### A solo creator with one brand on five networks

Take one person posting to Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn and Facebook. On Metricool that is a single brand, and LinkedIn needs a paid plan, so the answer is Starter at $20 a month billed annually ($240 a year) or $25 billed monthly, for up to 5 brands. At the Essentials per-channel rate, the same five channels (on Buffer, YouTube publishes Shorts only) come to $25 a month billed yearly, or $300 a year, and $30 a month on monthly billing. The gap is small. Add X as a sixth profile and the two tools land on the same yearly bill: $360 for Metricool Starter plus one X add-on, and $360 for six Buffer channels billed yearly.

### A freelancer with five clients

Now picture a freelancer running five client brands, each on three networks, alone. Metricool still needs only Starter, because five brands fit the smallest bundle: $25 a month billed monthly or $240 a year billed annually. On Buffer those are 15 channels. With Buffer's volume rates, the first 10 at the full rate and channels 11 to 25 lower, they come to $80 a month billed monthly, or $800 a year billed yearly (about $67 a month), by our arithmetic. **This is where brand pricing wins outright.** The freelancer pays more than three times as much on Buffer for the same work.

### An agency with 15 clients and three staff

An agency with 15 clients on four networks each has 60 channels, three people and a need for approvals. Metricool Advanced covers it: $67 a month billed monthly or $636 a year billed annually, for up to 15 brands with unlimited users, roles and post approval. Buffer's equivalent is Team. With Buffer's volume rates, 60 Team channels come to $275 a month billed monthly, or $2,750 a year billed yearly (about $229 a month), by our arithmetic. Metricool stays cheaper in every reading.

> 💡 **Count profiles before prices:** List every profile you post to and every person who needs a login. Per-channel pricing grows with profiles, while a brand bundle stays flat until you cross its limit.

## The free plans side by side

Both tools have a free tier with no card, and both are real ways to try the product. They limit different things. Metricool Free covers 1 brand and 20 published posts a month on every supported network except LinkedIn and X, with 30 days of analytics, a fixed demo of 5 competitor profiles per network, 5 AI credits a month and the MCP server. It has no reports, SmartLinks, Flows, Studio or Canva. Metricool has no standard free trial of paid plans; trials appear only through promo or affiliate codes, so the Free plan is the way in.

Buffer's free tier connects up to 3 channels for 1 user, with 10 scheduled posts per channel at a time that refill as they publish. It adds 100 ideas, the AI Assistant, Insights with 30 days of history, a Community inbox with 5 AI reply suggestions a week, Start Page and API access with 1 key and 3,000 requests a month. A lifetime cap of 8 unique channels per network applies. Buffer also offers a one-time 14-day trial, which runs on the Team plan and is not open to legacy-plan customers; with a card on file it converts to a paid plan and charges at the end, and without one the account drops to Free. Metricool does not offer a trial as standard.

| | Metricool | Buffer |
|---|---|---|
| Billing unit | Brand (one profile per network) | Connected channel |
| Free tier | 1 brand, 20 posts a month, no LinkedIn or X | 3 channels, 10 queued posts per channel |
| Users on the entry paid plan | 1 (Starter) | 1 (Essentials) |
| Unlimited users | Advanced and Custom | Team |
| Public API | Advanced and Custom | Every plan |
| MCP server | Every plan, Free included | Every plan |
| Social listening | No | No |

Read the table as a map of where each tool draws its lines. Neither one offers social listening, and each gives a single login on its entry paid plan. The real split is between paying for volume and paying for people or developer access. A week on each free tier, with your actual networks connected, will show more than the grid can. Pay attention to how many posts you queue in a typical week, since the two free limits work very differently.

## Publishing and networks

Metricool publishes to Instagram, Facebook Pages, TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn on paid plans, Threads, Bluesky, Pinterest and Google Business Profile, with X only on a paid plan plus the X add-on. Twitch is covered for analytics, not publishing. The planner brings Best Times, autolists, RSS, a post library, an image and video editor, and Canva, Adobe Express and Google Drive. Paid plans publish without a monthly cap under a fair use threshold of 600 posts per brand a month. Recurring posts need Advanced. Published posts cannot be edited from Metricool, and Facebook Groups are not supported.

Buffer publishes to 12 networks plus Start Page, with a queue, calendar and drafts. It handles threads on X, Threads, Bluesky and Mastodon with no X add-on in its price list, first comments on paid plans, carousels, Reels, Stories and mixed media, and bulk CSV uploads of 10 posts per channel on Free or 100 on paid plans. Recurring posts are in beta. Buffer supports YouTube Shorts only and has no Snapchat, Reddit, WhatsApp, Telegram or Discord publishing. Both tools send some Instagram post types by phone notification rather than publishing them automatically, so neither is fully hands-off on Instagram.

## Analytics and reporting

Analytics is where Metricool pulls ahead. Paid plans keep unlimited analytics history, as Buffer's do, track up to 100 competitors on Starter and export PDF or PPT reports. Advanced adds custom report templates and the Looker Studio connector. Metricool also reports on Meta, Google and TikTok ads, builds Meta and Google campaigns, and tracks website or blog traffic. Limited versions of Studio, which builds reports from a written prompt, and Campaign Dashboards are free on paid plans for a limited time only, and Metricool has announced both as future paid add-ons. The full versions already need the Advanced Analytics add-on, from $12 a month on Starter or $36 a month on Advanced.

Buffer rebuilt its analytics in 2026. Insights, launched in April 2026, replaced Analyze, which was retired in October 2026. It keeps 30 days of history on Free and unlimited history on paid plans. Paid plans export CSV, Markdown and PDF, and AI takeaways come on every plan. Buffer's pricing page lists branded reports on Team only, while its help center describes a PDF export with your own cover logo on any paid plan. The gaps are clear. There is no custom report builder, no audience demographics and no best time to post yet, and no Google Business Profile analytics. Buffer also has no ads management. For a team that reports to clients every month, those gaps matter more than any publishing feature.

## Inbox and engagement

Neither inbox is built for a customer care desk. Metricool's Inbox works per brand, with no unified view across brands. It covers comments and messages on most networks, X direct messages only, and Google Business Profile reviews. It sends no notifications, has no automatic replies or message assignment, and cannot delete or hide comments. Meta limits Instagram DM replies to 7 days when connected through Facebook, or 24 hours when connected directly. Flows add DM and comment automation, free on paid plans for a limited time and announced as a future paid add-on.

Buffer's Community inbox covers comments across 10 networks, though not Pinterest or Substack, plus mentions (in beta) for X, personal LinkedIn profiles and Instagram accounts connected through Facebook Login. It scores comments and offers AI reply suggestions, 5 a week on Free and unlimited on paid plans, along with saved replies. It does not handle Instagram DMs or Story replies. So the choice is lopsided. Buffer is better at triaging comments, while Metricool is the one that reaches private messages and automates Instagram conversations.

> ⚠ **Free extras may get a price:** Metricool's Flows and limited versions of Studio and Campaign Dashboards are free on paid plans for a limited time only and are announced as future paid add-ons. The full Studio and Dashboards already need the Advanced Analytics add-on, from $12 a month on Starter.

## Teams, approvals and who gets a login

Both tools give the entry paid plan a single user. On Metricool, adding teammates, roles and permissions, post approval and the client connection link all start at Advanced, which brings unlimited users. On Buffer, the Team plan brings unlimited team members, approval workflows, custom access and permissions per channel, Community permissions, and admins can require two-factor login for the whole team. The structure is the same. The bill is not, because Buffer multiplies the Team rate by every channel while Metricool charges one bundle for up to 15 brands.

For a two-person shop with few channels, Buffer Team can be the cheaper road to approvals. Five channels on Team billed yearly come to $50 a month by our arithmetic, a little under Advanced at $53 a month billed annually for up to 15 brands. Past a handful of channels the picture reverses. Agencies also get more from Metricool's side, since Advanced adds custom report templates and the Looker Studio connector, while White Label stays on Custom only.

## AI, API and MCP

Both tools have an AI assistant on every plan. Metricool meters it in credits: 5 a month on Free, 20 per brand on Starter and 35 per brand on Advanced, with no top-ups and no rollover. Buffer's assistant runs on OpenAI, and text typed into it is shared with OpenAI. Buffer adds AI alt text, reply suggestions and Insights takeaways. Metricool's terms say its AI providers may not train on customer content, and its Studio is described as powered by Claude.

Developers will lean toward Buffer. Its GraphQL API and official MCP server come with each of its plans, and the API allows 1 key on the free tier, 3 on Essentials and 5 on Team, plus a CLI. Its limits are real: no webhooks, no media upload endpoint and post metrics only on personal keys. Metricool keeps its REST API, Zapier and Make (the automation tool) for Advanced and Custom; under an Integration or White Label agreement, standard use is up to 500 calls a month per brand. Its MCP server, however, needs no paid plan and works on Free as well, with each plan's limits still applying [3]. It covers brands, analytics and the planner, not the inbox or ads campaigns.

## X: an add-on on one side, a channel on the other

X is not included in Metricool plans bought on the web (the app-store Starter Mobile 5 plan includes it in its price). You need a paid plan plus the X add-on, which costs $10 a month or $120 a year per connected X account since July 13, 2026 [4]. Earlier buyers keep the old $5 rate unless they remove all X add-ons or cancel. Starter gets reduced X analytics, and the complete set needs Advanced. The Free plan cannot connect X at all.

On Buffer, X is simply one of its networks, billed like any other connected channel. Threads on X and X mentions in the Community inbox are part of the product. For an agency with many X accounts this changes the math. By our arithmetic, fifteen X accounts add $150 a month to a brand-based plan. On Buffer, those accounts are 15 more channels at the plan's per-channel rate. Heavy X users should run both numbers.

> ⚠ **Buffer bills every channel:** Upgrading from Buffer's free tier charges for every connected channel, the first three included, and Start Page counts as a channel.

## Support, trust and what reviewers say

Metricool offers in-app chat and email on every plan, with no phone line and no published response times. Two-factor login uses an authenticator app and is off by default. Data stays on servers in the European Union, and we found no published security certification such as SOC 2 or ISO 27001. Refunds apply only within 15 days of the first purchase; renewals and plan changes are not refunded.

Buffer offers human email support on every plan, typically replying within about two hours. Refunds cover monthly plans within 7 days and annual plans within 30 days; otherwise fees are non-refundable. It also offers two-factor login by authenticator or email, a bug bounty and the EU, UK and Swiss Data Privacy Framework. It hosts on AWS and lists 26 sub-processors. Its pages mention no SOC 2, ISO 27001 or SSO, and its web app is in English only. User content and account data are kept indefinitely. Neither tool, then, is the pick for a buyer whose security team asks for a certificate.

**What users rate it, by platform**

| Platform | Rating | Reviews | As of |
|---|---|---|---|

Reviewers treat Metricool kindly overall. Business-software review sites rate it well and Trustpilot leans positive, while the app stores are weaker, middling on Android and low on the US iOS store. Low-star Trustpilot reviews cluster around support, posts that failed or never published, lost analytics data and login problems. Read that as a map of complaints, not as a trend. In our own scoring Metricool gets 3.98 and Buffer 3.92 (category order: Metricool 3.98, Sprout Social 3.93, Buffer 3.92, Hootsuite 3.79, Sendible 3.65, SocialBee 3.62, Later 3.15).

## The verdict by buyer type

Pick Buffer if you run one business on up to three or four channels and want the lowest bill for a small setup, or can stay within its free tier. It also fits developers who want an API without upgrading, teams that triage lots of comments, and anyone who posts heavily to X. **Buffer Team is a fair deal for a small team** with few channels that needs approvals. Its one-time 14-day trial runs on Team and makes the paid features easy to test; with a card on file it converts to a paid plan at the end.

Pick Metricool if you manage several brands. The freelancer and agency cases above are not close: brand bundles beat per-channel billing as soon as profiles multiply. Metricool also wins when analytics and ads reporting matter, with competitor tracking, custom report templates on Advanced and Meta, Google and TikTok ads in one place. Our [Metricool pricing guide](/articles/metricool-pricing) breaks down every tier, and the [Buffer review](/articles/buffer-review) covers the other side in full. Skip Metricool if you need a second login cheaply or many X accounts.

> 💡 **Try both free tiers first:** Metricool Free gives 1 brand and 20 posts a month on every network except LinkedIn and X, and Buffer's free tier gives 3 channels with 10 queued posts each. Connect your real networks to each before you pay.

## FAQ

**Is Metricool cheaper than Buffer?**

For several brands, yes. A freelancer with five clients on three networks each pays $240 a year on Metricool Starter billed annually, against $800 a year for 15 Buffer Essentials channels billed yearly, by our arithmetic with Buffer's volume rates.

**Which has the better free plan?**

They limit different things. Metricool Free covers 1 brand and 20 posts a month without LinkedIn or X; Buffer's free tier covers 3 channels with 10 scheduled posts per channel at a time.

**Does Metricool include X (Twitter) like Buffer does?**

No. On plans bought on the web, Metricool needs a paid plan plus the X add-on at $10 a month or $120 a year per connected X account (the rate since July 13, 2026; earlier buyers keep $5); the app-store Starter Mobile 5 plan includes X in its price. On Buffer, X is billed like any other connected channel.

**Which tool has an API on every plan?**

Buffer offers its API and MCP server on every plan. Metricool offers its MCP server on every plan, Free included, but keeps the API, Zapier and the Looker Studio connector for Advanced and Custom.

**Do both tools allow teams and approvals?**

Yes, on higher plans only. Metricool needs Advanced for extra users, roles and post approval; Buffer needs Team for unlimited users and approval workflows.

**Does either tool offer a free trial?**

Buffer offers a one-time 14-day trial that runs on the Team plan; with a card on file it converts to a paid plan and charges at the end, and without one the account drops to Free. Metricool has no standard free trial of paid plans; its Free plan is the way to try it.

## The bottom line

Metricool and Buffer split the market by how they count. Buffer charges per channel, which makes it cheap for one brand on three or four networks, generous to developers with its API on every plan, and simple for X, which needs no add-on there. Metricool charges per bundle of brands, which makes it far cheaper the moment you handle several clients, and it reports deeper on competitors and ads. Its costs sit in the X add-on at $10 a month per account and in Advanced, where team features and the API live. Count your profiles first; the right tool usually follows.
