Rank tracking tools check where your pages sit in Google for a fixed list of keywords, on a set schedule, for a chosen location and device. No single tool solves the whole problem. A complete setup has four parts: a keyword list you control, the right location and device, an update frequency that matches how fast you act, and real click data from Google. **The short verdict: pick a tracker by update frequency first, then add Google Search Console for real clicks.** Daily trackers suit active sites and agencies; weekly ones suit most blogs and small sites.

**Daily or weekly** — the split that matters most: SE Ranking, Serpstat and Semrush check daily; Ahrefs, Mangools below Agency and Ubersuggest weekly

- **1,200** — tracked keywords in SE Ranking from 300 keywords on 2 devices in 2 cities
- **Up to 20** — rivals per Semrush Position Tracking campaign
- **16 months** — of your own Google position data in Search Console

## What a complete rank tracking setup needs

Rank tracking is not one number. It is a small system, and each part answers a different question. The method behind it is laid out in our [guide to tracking keyword rankings](/articles/how-to-track-keyword-rankings); here the question is which tool covers which part.

| Part of the job | What it answers | Free way | Where a paid tracker adds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keyword list | Where you rank for the searches you chose | A manual Google search per keyword | Hundreds of keywords checked on schedule |
| Location and device | What a searcher in Denver on a phone sees | None reliable by hand | City or ZIP targeting, desktop and mobile |
| Frequency | How fast you see a drop | Re-checking by hand | Daily or weekly updates with history |
| Competitors | Who is gaining on you | None | Rivals tracked on the same list |
| Real results | Clicks and impressions you actually got | Search Console | Search Console data inside the tracker |

The free half of the table matters. Search Console reports measured data from Google. A tracker reports a position it checked at one moment, from one location. You need both.

> 💡 **Seed the list from Search Console:** Start your tracked list with queries that already earn impressions in Search Console. You track what is close to paying off, not guesses.

## Daily or weekly: the split between SEO rank tracking tools

The biggest difference between SEO rank tracking tools is not the interface. It is how often they check. SE Ranking updates daily on every plan. Serpstat updates daily on every paid plan, and Semrush Position Tracking updates daily too. Ahrefs updates weekly on every plan, with daily updates only through its separate Rank Tracker Pro add-on. Mangools updates weekly below its Agency plan, and Ubersuggest has been weekly only since September 2025.

Why it matters: a weekly tracker gives you about four data points per keyword a month, a daily one about thirty. If you publish often, run ads against organic pages or report to clients, a week is a long time to miss a drop. **If you change a page once a month, weekly is enough.**

The second split is how keywords are counted. Most tools count each keyword once per location and device. In SE Ranking, 300 keywords tracked on two devices in two cities become 1,200 tracked keywords. Mangools counts mobile and desktop of the same keyword as two. Size your list with that multiplication in mind.

> ⚠ **Settings you cannot change later:** In Semrush, location, device and target are fixed per campaign; in SE Ranking, deleting an engine or region deletes its history; in Ahrefs, a keyword's location cannot be edited. Set them right on day one.

## Daily trackers for active sites and agencies

These three check every day. They fit in-house marketers, ecommerce stores and agencies that act on rankings within days, not weeks.

### SE Ranking: daily on every plan, local grids included

SE Ranking's [rank tracker sets up per project](/articles/se-ranking-rank-tracker) for a domain, folder or single URL, then checks Google desktop and mobile, Bing, Yahoo and YouTube by country, city or street address. A Recheck Data button forces a fresh check. Map grid tracking shows Google Maps positions for local businesses, and a guest link gives a client read-only access.

### SE Ranking — solves this

Checks your keyword list daily on every plan across Google desktop and mobile, Bing, Yahoo and YouTube, set by country, city or street address, with a Recheck Data button and map grid tracking for Google Maps.

- Where it stops: Each keyword counts once per search engine and location; frequency cannot be switched to weekly.
- Plan: Core and Growth; client guest link on Growth

### Semrush: Position Tracking with competitors and AI search

Semrush splits tracking into campaigns. Each [Position Tracking campaign](/articles/semrush-position-tracking) covers one domain, one location and one device, with up to 20 competitors. It tracks Google, Bing, Baidu, ChatGPT Search and Google AI Mode, down to a ZIP code. The catch is setup: location, device and target cannot change later, so a wrong choice costs your history.

### Semrush — solves this

Position Tracking checks a fixed keyword list daily for one domain, location and device per campaign, down to ZIP code, with up to 20 competitors and Google, Bing, ChatGPT Search and Google AI Mode results.

- Where it stops: Location, device and target cannot change later; mobile analysis stops at the top 20; the Free plan tracks 10 keywords and blocks exports.
- Plan: SEO plan; multi-location and device tracking on Pro+

- More: [Semrush](https://professionalstoolkit.com/tools/semrush)

### Serpstat: daily checks, counted by volume

Serpstat's Rank Tracker checks the top 100 daily for desktop, mobile and paid results in any Google country, state or city, with unlimited competitors per project. It also shows AI Overview positions next to organic ones. Plan around its model: checks multiply by keywords, regions, devices and update days, and unused checks do not roll over.

### Serpstat — solves this

Rank Tracker checks the top 100 daily for desktop, mobile and paid results in any Google country, state or city, shows AI Overview positions next to organic ones, and allows unlimited competitors per project.

- Where it stops: Checks multiply by keywords, regions, devices and days, and unused checks do not roll over.
- Plan: Daily tracking from Individual; Rank Tracker API from Team

## Weekly trackers for blogs and small sites

Not every site needs daily data. A blogger, a freelancer or a local business owner who updates pages a few times a month can read a weekly trend just as well. These three trade frequency for a gentler start.

### Ahrefs: weekly tracking tied to a large research suite

Ahrefs [Rank Tracker lives inside a project](/articles/ahrefs-rank-tracker). Add keywords by paste, file or from the keywords the site already ranks for, then choose country, state, city or ZIP and desktop or mobile. It can import past rankings from Site Explorer for new keywords, so you do not start from zero. A Search Console connection adds clicks, impressions and CTR next to each position.

### Ahrefs — solves this

Rank Tracker follows your keywords by country, state, city or ZIP on desktop and mobile, imports past rankings from Site Explorer, warns when another of your pages outranks the target URL, and adds Search Console clicks when connected.

- Where it stops: Weekly updates on every plan; daily needs the Rank Tracker Pro add-on; keywords over the plan limit are frozen.
- Plan: Starter, Lite, Standard, Advanced, Enterprise

- More: [Ahrefs](https://professionalstoolkit.com/tools/ahrefs)

### Mangools: SERPWatcher for simple, local-friendly tracking

Mangools' SERPWatcher tracks positions by city and device and rolls them into a Performance Index from 0 to 100, weighted by search volume. Keywords come from a paste, a file, a KWFinder list or a Search Console import. It also tracks the map pack and featured snippets and sends email alerts.

### Mangools — solves this

SERPWatcher tracks positions by city and device, rolls them into a 0-100 Performance Index, tracks the map pack and featured snippets, and sends email alerts and white-label reports.

- Where it stops: Weekly updates on Basic and Premium; mobile and desktop of one keyword count as two.
- Plan: Daily updates only on Agency
- How Mangools does it: [SERPWatcher step by step](https://professionalstoolkit.com/articles/mangools-serpwatcher)
- More: [Mangools](https://professionalstoolkit.com/tools/mangools)

### Ubersuggest: basic weekly tracking

Ubersuggest tracks the top 100 per project, weekly on every plan. Paid plans add mobile; the Free plan tracks desktop only and up to 25 keywords per project. It is the plainest option here. Note the exit rule: cancelling drops ranking history except for the oldest project.

### Ubersuggest — partly solves this

Tracks the top 100 for a keyword list per project and reports weekly, with desktop and mobile on paid plans.

- Where it stops: Weekly only on every plan since September 2025; Free tracks desktop only, 25 keywords per project; cancelling drops history except the oldest project.
- Plan: Mobile tracking on Individual, Business, Enterprise/Agency

## Rank tracking tool free options, and combinations that work

The honest answer to *is there a free rank tracking tool* is yes, with limits. Google Search Console is free and shows an average position for every query where your site got an impression. Google defines that figure as the topmost position of your link, averaged across all queries in which your property appeared [1]. That is real data, but not a fixed keyword list. A keyword you never appear for never shows up. The exact steps are in our walkthrough on [how to check website ranking on Google](/articles/check-website-ranking-on-google).

Two other free routes exist. SE Ranking offers a free Google rank checker with 5 checks a day and no account, and its 14-day trial tracks 750 keywords daily without a card. Mangools' Free+ gives 10 days of daily tracking for 50 keywords, then falls back to Free.

### Google Search Console — partly solves this

The Performance report shows the average position for every query and page where your site got an impression, filterable by device, with date-range comparisons.

- Where it stops: No fixed keyword list and no competitor ranks; 1,000 rows per table, 16 months of data, 2-3 day delay.
- Plan: Free
- How Google Search Console does it: [Reading the Performance report](https://professionalstoolkit.com/articles/google-search-console-performance-report)
- More: [Google Search Console](https://professionalstoolkit.com/tools/google-search-console)

Three combinations cover the parts no single tool covers:

1. **Search Console plus a weekly tracker.** Search Console shows which queries already earn clicks. Put the top 50 to 200 of them into a weekly tracker so you see exact positions by city and device.
2. **Search Console plus a daily tracker.** For stores and agencies, the daily tracker catches drops within a day, and Search Console confirms whether the drop cost real clicks. Ahrefs shows these side by side when Search Console is connected.
3. **A daily tracker plus a map tracker.** Local businesses need both the regular results and Google Maps. SE Ranking covers both; in Semrush, Maps sits in the separate Local toolkit's Map Rank Tracker.

Here is the first pairing in practice. A plumber in Austin finds 80 queries with impressions in Search Console. He tracks them weekly on mobile, set to his city. After a month, six keywords sit at positions 8 to 12. Those pages get rewritten first, because they are closest to page one.

> 💡 **Fix pages at positions 8 to 15:** Keywords just below page one move fastest when a page improves. Sort your tracker by position and work that band first.

## How to choose search rank tracking software

Start from how you work, not from the brand. Answer four questions in order.

**How fast do you act on a drop?** Within days: pick a daily tracker (SE Ranking, Serpstat, Semrush). Within weeks: a weekly one is fine (Ahrefs, Mangools, Ubersuggest).

**How many locations and devices?** Multiply keywords by cities by devices before you compare plans. One city on mobile keeps the count small. Ten cities on two devices multiplies it by twenty. Semrush needs a separate campaign for each city or device unless your plan includes multi-location and device tracking, which comes with Pro+.

**Do you serve local customers?** If Maps matters, look for map tracking: SE Ranking's grid, Mangools' map pack tracking, or Semrush's Local toolkit.

**Do you report to others?** Agencies need client access and branded reports. SE Ranking offers a guest link on Growth and white label through its Agency Pack. Mangools includes white-label reports.

Then run a test. Track ten keywords you know well for two weeks. Expect a tracker's positions to differ from your own Google search; Google says your position can vary because of search history and location. Trust the trend, not one check.

## FAQ

**Why does my rank tracker show a different position than Google Search Console?**

A tracker checks one location and device at one moment and reports that position. Search Console averages the topmost position of your link across every impression, so the two will rarely match. Read both as trends.

**Do I need mobile rank tracking separately from desktop?**

If most of your visitors search on phones, yes. Ahrefs, SE Ranking, Serpstat and Mangools track both. In SE Ranking, Serpstat and Mangools, each device counts as a separate tracked keyword. In Semrush, each device needs its own campaign unless your plan includes multi-location and device tracking (Pro+).

**How long does a rank tracker keep my ranking history?**

It depends on the plan. SE Ranking keeps 6 months on Core and the project's lifetime on Growth; Semrush keeps daily points for 60 days, then weekly points for 140 weeks.

**Can I move my ranking history to another tool?**

Sometimes. Serpstat imports ranking history from CSV files and detects Semrush and Ahrefs files automatically. Ahrefs can import past rankings from its own Site Explorer for new keywords.

## The bottom line

The best rank tracking tools are the ones that match your rhythm, not the ones with the longest feature list. Choose daily or weekly first, count keywords by location and device before you pick a plan, and keep Search Console beside any tracker for the clicks it actually measures. A tracker tells you where you rank; Search Console tells you whether that ranking earns traffic. Use both, watch the trend over weeks, and work first on the pages sitting just below page one.
