**$1,495** — a month for five Professional seats billed annually, by our arithmetic: the bill that sends teams shopping.

- **Per seat** — every Sprout plan, $79 to $399 billed annually
- **30 days** — notice by email to cancel an annual plan paid monthly or invoiced
- **6 rivals** — compared on pricing model and fit

## Why teams look beyond Sprout Social

Sprout Social is one of the most complete social media suites a team can buy. It covers publishing, a shared Smart Inbox, review management, deep reporting and an AI agent called Trellis, and it backs them with SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001 certification and phone support 24 hours a day on weekdays. Few buyers leave because the product is weak. They leave because of **how it is sold**: per seat, with several important parts unpriced and contract terms that favor commitment over flexibility. Each of those frictions points toward a different alternative, so it helps to name them before comparing tools.

### The bill multiplies with every seat

Essentials costs $79 per seat a month billed annually or $99 billed monthly, Standard $199 or $249, Professional $299 or $399, and Advanced $399 or $499 per seat a month [1]. Every one of those figures is per person. A five-person team on Professional billed annually pays $1,495 a month, or $17,940 a year, by our arithmetic. Removing a user does not lower the paid seat count until the next billing cycle, so a shrinking team keeps paying for an empty chair for a while. For a two-person marketing department the math is tolerable. For an agency that adds freelancers every quarter, it is usually the first reason to shop around.

### Add-ons without a price, contracts without an exit

Listening, Premium Analytics, Employee Advocacy and Guardian are add-ons with no published price, and Influencer Marketing is a separate product sold through a demo. Listening and Premium Analytics need Standard or higher, and Listening is not available in the trial, so a team cannot test it before it signs. All annual plans renew automatically: annual plans paid upfront in the app are cancelled in the billing page before the renewal date, while annual plans paid monthly and invoiced plans need 30 days' notice by email, and the terms give no refund on cancellation, on a downgrade or when an add-on is removed [2]. At renewal the fee can rise by up to 7% without extra notice, or by more with at least 60 days' notice. **A wrong seat count is locked in for a year.**

### What the lower plans leave out

Essentials has no Smart Inbox, no review management, no approvals and no chatbots, so the cheapest plan is a publishing and reporting tool rather than an engagement tool. Standard adds the inbox and reviews. Professional adds approvals, message tagging and competitor reports. The deepest care features wait at Advanced: the Sprout API, cases, chatbots, sentiment in the inbox, and the helpdesk and CRM integrations with Zendesk, Salesforce, HubSpot and Dynamics 365. A support team that wants conversations flowing into its helpdesk is effectively buying Advanced at $399 per seat a month billed annually. That is a steep price for one integration.

### The AI training clause

The AI Features Terms, effective July 7, 2026, let Sprout use customer AI inputs and outputs to train and improve its own AI features, during and after the contract [3]. Its AI providers may not train on that content, and we found no opt-out on that page. For most brands this is a policy question rather than a dealbreaker. For agencies handling client material and for regulated teams, it deserves a conversation with legal before renewal. Two alternatives below, Metricool and SocialBee, take a stricter line on this point, and one, Later, takes a similar one, so the clause alone should not decide the move.

> ⚠ **Mind the renewal notice:** Annual Sprout plans renew automatically. Plans paid upfront in the app are cancelled in the billing page before the renewal date; annual plans paid monthly and invoiced plans need 30 days' notice by email. Cancellations, downgrades and removed add-ons are not refunded.

## Hootsuite: the closest like-for-like

Hootsuite is the alternative most teams list first, because it is built the same way: plans priced per user, a unified inbox, analytics, approvals and a quoted enterprise tier. Standard costs $99 per user a month billed annually, Professional $199 per user and Advanced $399 per user, and no month-to-month rate is published. There is no free tier; its pricing page offers a 14-day trial without a card and says you are not charged automatically, while Hootsuite's terms and its help center say a trial with a payment method on file converts and is charged. Standard already covers up to 10 social accounts, basic listening with seven days of quick search and five benchmarked competitors, and ads management comes on every plan. That last point matters for teams that run paid social from the same desk.

By our arithmetic, five users on Hootsuite Professional cost $995 a month billed annually, against $1,495 for five Sprout Professional seats. That gap is the main argument for switching, and it grows with headcount. It closes for teams that need approvals: Hootsuite puts them on Advanced, at $399 per user a month billed annually, the same price as Sprout Advanced, while Sprout already includes them on Professional. Hootsuite also suits public-sector buyers, since its security page lists FedRAMP (Tailored Li-SaaS) and TX-RAMP alongside SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001. Nonprofits get their own rates through HootGiving. Annual plans are non-refundable at Hootsuite too, and its Enterprise terms ask for 60 days of written notice to cancel, so the contract question does not disappear by moving.

Where Sprout still wins is care depth on a published plan. Hootsuite keeps its Advanced Inbox with sentiment, the AI chatbot and the Salesforce integration behind Enterprise, which is quote-only. Sprout opens sentiment, chatbots and the helpdesk and CRM integrations on Advanced, a plan with a list price. Hootsuite's inbox keeps conversations for six weeks, and it has no Glassdoor integration, while Sprout pulls reviews from Google, Yelp, Trustpilot and Glassdoor into one place. Our [Hootsuite review](/articles/hootsuite-review) covers the plans in full.

## Buffer: pay per channel, not per person

Buffer turns the pricing logic around. It charges per connected channel, not per user, and it has a free tier with 3 channels, 1 user and 10 scheduled posts per channel at a time. Essentials costs $6 per channel a month billed monthly or $5 billed yearly, with one user. Team costs $12 per channel a month or $10 billed yearly and adds unlimited team members, approval workflows, access levels per channel and branded reports (Team only on its pricing page, though its help center describes a PDF export with your own cover logo on any paid plan). A 14-day trial, one per account, runs on Team; with a card on file it converts and charges at the end, without one the account drops to Free. Upgrading bills every connected channel, including the first three and the Start Page, which counts as a channel.

A team with 10 channels on the Team plan billed yearly pays $100 a month, whether it has two people or twelve, by our arithmetic. For small teams with many contributors and very few channels, it is among the cheapest options here, though Sendible Core (unlimited users, 6 profiles, no approvals, $29.75 a month billed yearly) and Metricool Advanced (unlimited users, up to 15 brands, $53 a month billed annually) undercut it as channels grow. Buffer also opens its API on every plan, including the free one, and its official MCP server works with AI assistants. Creators and small businesses that mainly need a reliable queue, a calendar and simple analytics will find it calmer than any suite. **It is a publishing tool first**, and it is priced like one.

Sprout wins on everything around engagement and measurement. Buffer has no social listening, no ads management and no sentiment analysis. Its Community inbox handles comments across 10 networks but not Instagram DMs or Story replies. Insights, which replaced Analyze (retired October 7, 2026), still lacks custom reports, demographics and best time to post. We found no SOC 2, ISO 27001 or SSO mentioned on its pages, which rules it out for many security reviews. Care teams will outgrow it fast. Our [Buffer review](/articles/buffer-review) has the details.

## Later: visual planning for Instagram and TikTok

Later prices by Social Set, a bundle of eight profiles with one per platform. Starter costs $25 a month billed monthly or $18.75 billed yearly, for one Social Set, one user and 30 posts per profile a month. Growth costs $50 a month billed monthly or $37.50 billed yearly and brings two Social Sets, two users, 180 posts per profile, approvals, a social inbox and UGC collection. Scale costs $110 a month billed monthly or $82.50 billed yearly and adds six Social Sets, four users, unlimited posts, listening, benchmarking of up to 20 competitors and Meta Ads analytics. Extra users (Growth and Scale only) cost $5 a month billed monthly, or $3.75 billed yearly. A small free tier exists in the help center, aimed at creators.

Later fits brands whose social life happens on Instagram and TikTok. Its visual calendar, Instagram grid planner, shoppable Link in Bio page and UGC tools are built for that kind of team, and Later Influence is a separate influencer platform sold through demos. Plans are non-refundable except case by case, and trials convert to paid automatically, so the contract caution carries over. Later's privacy policy also lets it train its own models on customer content. A team leaving Sprout over the AI clause gains nothing here.

The gaps are real. Later removed X support on August 28, 2025, it has no public API, and it does not support Bluesky, Reddit or Google Business Profile. Its social inbox is a desktop-only beta, Instagram DMs can be answered only within seven days, and TikTok DMs are not supported. Listening is limited to Instagram and TikTok, plus Facebook Pages for sentiment and Brand Health, there are no analytics for LinkedIn Pages, and current plans have no SSO. Sprout publishes to X, LinkedIn, Bluesky (not for EU data-center customers) and Reddit and brings WhatsApp into its inbox. Later is a strong planner. It is not a care desk.

## Metricool: many brands, low cost, unlimited users on Advanced

Metricool prices by brand. Its free tier covers one brand with up to 20 posts a month, without LinkedIn or X. Starter costs $25 a month billed monthly or $20 billed annually for up to 5 brands, with unlimited analytics history, 100 competitors and PDF and PowerPoint reports. Advanced costs $67 a month or $53 billed annually for up to 15 brands and adds unlimited users, roles, post approval, the API and the Looker Studio connector [4]. On plans bought on the web, X needs a paid plan plus an add-on at $10 a month per connected X account, and prices exclude VAT. There is no standard trial, and refunds apply only within 15 days of a first purchase.

For agencies and small teams the structure is the attraction. The savings are large. Fifteen brands with as many users as you like cost less per month on Advanced than one Sprout Essentials seat, and analytics are the product's strength: ads reporting for Meta, Google and TikTok, cookie-free web tracking and reports built from a prompt. Data sits on servers in the European Union with no international transfers, and its AI providers are contractually barred from training on customer content, a stricter line than Sprout's terms. Its official MCP server works on every plan with Claude and ChatGPT (Metricool describes the manual ChatGPT connection to its newer MCP version for paid accounts), while Sprout's supports ChatGPT only.

Sprout wins where conversations need managing. Metricool's inbox handles comments, DMs and reviews per brand but has no assignment, no auto-replies and no option to hide comments, and there are no cases, chatbots or care reports. Two-factor authentication exists but is off by default, and we did not find the certifications Sprout lists. Studio, Campaign Dashboards and Flows are announced as future paid add-ons, so today's bill may grow. Teams that mostly publish and report should read our [Metricool review](/articles/metricool-review) before anything else.

## Sendible and SocialBee: flat rates for agencies and small teams

Both have full reviews in our catalog: see our [Sendible review](/articles/sendible-review) and [SocialBee review](/articles/socialbee-review). Both price by plan rather than by seat, which answers exactly the frustration that sends many teams away from Sprout, though in different ways: Sendible's current plans include unlimited users, while SocialBee includes one user until Pro (3 users per workspace), with extra users at $10 a month ($100 a year). Both also offer month-to-month billing and 14-day trials with no card to start; Sendible asks for a card at the end and bills it automatically once added, and SocialBee locks the account until a paid plan is chosen.

### Sendible

Sendible's current plans, rolling out since August 2026, include unlimited users and sell capacity by workspace, each with six profiles; some help pages still describe older per-user plans. Billed monthly, its homepage lists Core at $35 a month for 6 profiles ($29.75 a month billed yearly), Plus at $99 for 18 with simple approvals, Premium at $199 for 42 with branded reports and multi-step approval workflows, Elite at $299 for 90 and Enterprise at $750 for 300, with SSO. Annual billing saves 15%, though yearly prepayments are not refunded; there are no contracts or cancellation fees, and every plan starts with a 14-day trial. It targets agencies, franchises and multi-location brands, and white label is a paid option on Elite and Enterprise (Elite with white label costs from $349 a month in total, per the pricing FAQ). The trade-off is engagement depth. Its Priority Inbox updates periodically rather than in real time, and comment replies cover Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.

### SocialBee

SocialBee is built around content categories that recycle evergreen posts. Bootstrap costs $29 a month or $24.20 billed annually for 5 profiles and one user, Accelerate $49 or $40.80 for 10 profiles and one user, with post approval, and Pro $99 or $82.50 for 25 profiles across 5 workspaces with three users each. Extra users cost $10 a month. The trial gives 14 days of Pro without a card, and there is a 30-day money-back guarantee on the first purchase (not on renewals). AI content generation has no monthly cap under fair use (which may change), and Copilot drafts a strategy from your website. Its inbox handles DMs only for Facebook Pages and Instagram Business, with comments and mentions on Threads, LinkedIn pages and X, YouTube comments, and nothing from TikTok, Pinterest, Bluesky or Google Business Profile. Solopreneurs and small teams will like it. Care teams will not.

## Pricing models side by side

| Tool | Billed by | Entry paid plan | Trial |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Sprout Social | Seat | $79 per seat a month, billed annually | 30 days, no card |
| Hootsuite | User | $99 per user a month, billed annually | 14 days, no card per its pricing page (terms: a card on file converts) |
| Buffer | Channel | $5 per channel a month, billed yearly | 14 days on Team, converts if a card is on file |
| Later | Social Set | $18.75 a month, billed yearly | 14 days, card required, converts automatically |
| Metricool | Brands (5 on Starter) | $20 a month, billed annually | Promo codes only |
| Sendible | Workspace | $29.75 a month, billed yearly | 14 days, no card to start, card asked at the end |
| SocialBee | Plan | $24.20 a month, billed annually | 14 days, no card |

The unit in the second column matters more than the headline figure. Per-seat and per-user tools get expensive as people join, per-channel tools as networks are added, and per-brand or per-workspace tools as clients arrive. Count three things before you compare: the people who need a login, the profiles you publish to, and the brands or clients you report on. Then price each shortlisted tool on those numbers for two years, not one month. The cheapest entry plan rarely stays the cheapest once approvals, an inbox or a second brand enter the picture.

> 💡 **Count logins, profiles and brands:** Each alternative bills a different unit. Price your shortlist on all three numbers for two years before comparing headline rates.

## Who should stay with Sprout Social

Stay if the inbox is the job. Sprout is built for teams that answer customers every day: a Smart Inbox across Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, TikTok, Threads, WhatsApp and more, reviews from Google, Yelp, Trustpilot and Glassdoor, and on Advanced, cases, chatbots, sentiment and the helpdesk and CRM integrations. Professional gives unlimited profiles, so adding networks or locations does not move the bill. Security reviews are easier too, with SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001 and ISO 27701, SAML SSO (Sprout publishes no plan gate for it, and its pricing page lists a dedicated SSO setup service under Enterprise), SCIM for Okta and Entra ID, and multi-factor authentication required for everyone. None of the cheaper rivals lists that full combination.

**What users rate it, by platform**

| Platform | Rating | Reviews | As of |
|---|---|---|---|

_Rendered from our current record; these are other platforms' user scores, separate from our own Toolkit Score._

The review picture supports that split. Business-software review sites rate Sprout very well across thousands of reviews. That is a strong signal. Trustpilot carries far fewer reviews, mostly from unhappy customers, and they cluster around support, billing and cancelling annual contracts. Read that as a map of where friction shows up, not as a trend in quality. It lines up with the contract terms above. The iOS app is well rated and the Android app is weak, which matters for teams that answer from their phones.

> 💡 **Trial on your real profiles:** Run each finalist through a full publishing and reporting cycle with your own accounts before the renewal notice date.

If you are on the fence, use the time before renewal well. Annual plans paid monthly or invoiced need 30 days' notice by email, and plans paid upfront in the app must be cancelled before the renewal date, so mark that date and work backwards. List the features you used in the last quarter, the seats you actually filled and the add-ons you pay for. Then trial two alternatives on your real profiles for a full publishing cycle. A team that discovers it only schedules posts and reads basic reports can move to a per-channel or per-brand tool and save most of its bill. A team that lives in the inbox usually stays.

## FAQ

**What is the best alternative to Sprout Social?**

It depends on how you use it. Hootsuite is the closest like-for-like suite, Buffer and Metricool cost far less for teams that mainly publish and report, and Later suits Instagram- and TikTok-led brands.

**Is Hootsuite cheaper than Sprout Social?**

On Standard and Professional, yes: Hootsuite costs $99 and $199 per user a month billed annually, against Sprout's $199 and $299 per seat. On Advanced both list $399 per user or seat a month billed annually, and Hootsuite's approvals start at Advanced while Sprout includes them on Professional. Hootsuite publishes no month-to-month rate.

**Does Sprout Social have a free plan?**

No. Sprout offers a trial of 30 days without a credit card on every plan, but Listening is not available in trials.

**Can I get a refund if I leave Sprout Social mid-contract?**

Generally no. The terms give no refund on cancellation, downgrade or add-on removal, and annual plans renew automatically; annual plans paid monthly and invoiced plans need 30 days' notice by email to cancel, while plans paid upfront in the app are cancelled in the billing page before the renewal date.

**Which Sprout Social alternatives include unlimited users?**

Buffer's Team plan, Metricool's Advanced plan and Sendible's current plans (rolling out since August 2026) include unlimited users, so the bill follows channels, brands or workspaces instead of headcount.

**Which alternative is best for customer care?**

Hootsuite comes closest, though its Advanced Inbox, sentiment and Salesforce integration are Enterprise-only. Sprout keeps cases, chatbots and helpdesk integrations on its published Advanced plan.

## The bottom line

Sprout Social remains the strongest choice here for teams that run customer care through social: inbox depth, review management, care reporting, security credentials and phone support justify the per-seat price when engagement is the work. Teams that mainly publish and report pay for depth they do not use. Pick Hootsuite for a similar suite at a lower per-user price on Standard and Professional, Buffer for small teams with few channels, Later for Instagram- and TikTok-led brands, Metricool for many brands with unlimited users on Advanced, and check Sendible (unlimited users on its current plans) or SocialBee (three users per workspace from Pro) if plan-based team pricing is the priority. Whatever you choose, mark the renewal date first.
