**$12** — Starter per seat a month billed annually: the entry point for passwords, unlisted links and downloads.

- **Up to 4K** — ad-free player with HDR and Dolby Vision
- **20 Nov 2026** — Vimeo On Demand shuts down
- **3 strikes** — copyright strikes disable an account

## Where Vimeo fits in a creator's week

For independent filmmakers, editors and small studios, Vimeo does three jobs that sit side by side in a normal week. It is the shop window, where finished work plays in a clean player with no ads. It is the review room, where a client leaves notes pinned to the exact second of a cut. And it is the delivery dock, where final files and screeners go out under a password. **It is not an audience machine.** It does not pay you for views either. Vimeo has belonged to Bending Spoons since November 2025, and the creator tools have kept moving since then.

The honest summary: Vimeo rewards people who already have viewers, clients or festivals waiting, and who care how their work looks and who can see it. If you need a platform to find an audience from scratch and share ad money with you, the answer lies elsewhere. The rest of this guide follows a creator's day, from posting a reel in the morning to sending a locked screener at night, then the plan question.

## Showing your work: player, showcases and portfolios

### A player that stays out of the way

The player is still the main reason filmmakers choose Vimeo. It plays uploads up to 4K, with HDR and Dolby Vision when the source carries them, and Vimeo says there are no ads anywhere around videos on the site, on any plan. Your viewer sees your film, not a pre-roll for someone else's product. From Starter up, you can customize the player and set a custom URL, and from Standard you can put your own branding on it and add a custom watermark. That polish shows. One detail matters for reels: your public profile page shows only Public videos, so anything unlisted or locked stays off it.

### Showcases and portfolios

A **showcase** is a playlist with its own page, and every plan can build one. Free accounts get a few, paid plans get unlimited showcases, and Standard opens full customization: layout, logo, accent colors, hiding Vimeo branding, search-engine settings and a registration form at the door. From Standard, a showcase can also live on your own domain over HTTPS, though DNS changes can take up to 72 hours to settle. Portfolios are the older, site-style option. They need Standard, carry no Vimeo branding and are unlimited, but a portfolio on a custom domain runs over HTTP only. For most working creators on Standard, a branded showcase on their own domain is the cleaner reel.

## Staff Picks, the community and the EU and UK change

Vimeo's community side has shrunk, and where you live decides how much is left. Staff Picks have been hand-picked short films since 2008, and Staff Pick Premieres give a selected film a weekly online premiere. Vimeo says the program continues under its new owner. For some studios it has been a real credential: the production company Even/Odd lists 20 Staff Picks across 16 years on Vimeo. Outside the EU and UK, Staff Picks, Channels and Groups are still part of the site, so a strong short can still be found there.

**In the EU and UK, that layer is gone.** Vimeo no longer organizes or promotes user videos there, and Channels, Groups, Categories, Staff Picks, My Feed and the For Hire listings are no longer reachable [1]. Site-wide search no longer surfaces your videos, and on Free plans search covers only your own library. Vimeo blames regulatory costs that its subscription-funded, ad-free model cannot carry. Your videos can still be shared and embedded, so the player keeps working. Discovery does not. A European filmmaker should treat Vimeo as hosting, and bring the audience from somewhere else.

## Client work: review links, versions and Premiere Pro

### Review links clients can actually use

Client feedback is where Vimeo earns its keep for editors and agencies. A review link turns any video into a review page with time-coded comments, and since April 2026 reviewers no longer need a Vimeo account to open or comment on one. Guests give a name and email before commenting, so you can mention them later. Each video can carry several review links with their own settings, and you can let a reviewer move the status from In progress to Needs review to Approved. **Free gets one review link per video**, with expiry capped at one month. Passwords on review links need a paid plan, and extra links per video and folder review links need Standard.

### Versions that keep the conversation

Version history answers the classic client question of which cut they are looking at. Replacing a file through the official method creates a new version automatically, and restoring an older one creates yet another version from the old footage, with comments from earlier versions kept in the history. Folder review links can also show or hide resolved comments and previous versions, which helps when a client should see only the current cut. Vimeo now pitches this as a replacement for standalone review software. That holds for many small studios. It is a review layer on top of hosting, not a full production tracker.

### Inside Premiere Pro and other editors

The Adobe Premiere Pro panel lets any Vimeo user connect and upload straight from the timeline, and its review tools work on Free with one review link per video; more links come from Standard, per Vimeo's help center. Client comments arrive as markers on the timeline, and markers you export can become Vimeo comments. You cannot write time-coded comments inside Premiere itself; they are made on Vimeo and synced in. Final Cut Pro users upload through the Vimeo app for macOS, and Vimeo's agency page says a DaVinci Resolve integration mirrors the Premiere workflow.

> 💡 **Let clients approve on the link:** Review links can let a reviewer set the status to Approved. Turn it on so sign-off lives next to the time-coded notes.

## Delivering files: downloads, source files and transfers

Delivery is where the Free plan stops being enough. **Free members cannot enable downloads or download videos they uploaded**, so a finished master uploaded on Free cannot come back out through Vimeo; only videos made in Vimeo's editor export, up to 1080p. On paid plans, owners decide whether viewers may download a video, and viewers can download only when the owner allows it, never from the embedded player. Two details catch people out. Download links are permanent, and anyone holding one can use it. And a viewer must be logged in to download the source file of a Public video, while logged-out viewers can still pull the source file of an unlisted or password-protected one when downloads are on.

Source-file storage deserves a setting check on day one. Keeping originals needs a paid plan and a manual switch in account settings; without it, source files are permanently deleted, and they stay only as long as the paid plan does. Storage use equals the size of the original file, so a heavy ProRes master eats storage fast. Every plan accepts files up to 300GB and 24 hours long, and help pages advise staying within 200GB. Vimeo also offers file transfer links that do not expire until you disable downloads, which suits deliverables. Back up masters elsewhere too.

> 💡 **Switch on source-file storage:** Keeping originals needs a paid plan and a manual setting in account settings. Without it, source files are permanently deleted.

> ⚠ **Free cannot hand back your master:** Free members cannot enable downloads or download videos they uploaded; only videos made in Vimeo's editor export, up to 1080p. Keep a copy of every master outside Vimeo, or upgrade before you deliver.

## Festival screeners and private links

Screeners are a privacy job, and the useful settings start on a paid plan. Unlisted, Password and Embed only privacy all need at least Starter; Public and Private are on every plan. An unlisted video stays out of public search, but anyone with the URL can watch it, so it suits a programmer you trust. A password adds a second lock for submission forms that ask for a link and a code. Embed only keeps the film off Vimeo.com and plays it only where you embed it, such as a press kit on your own site. Free cannot lock individual videos this way, though a Free showcase can still be set to Password. Before sending a screener, check:

- Set privacy to Password, not just Unlisted, and change the password once the festival closes.
- Leave downloads off unless the festival asks for a file, since download links never expire.
- Add your custom watermark, which comes with Standard, if leaks worry you.
- Use a review link with an expiry date when the screener is for a buyer who should only see it for a while.
- When a festival wants the file itself, send a file transfer link and disable downloads afterward.

## Making money after Vimeo On Demand

Selling changed in autumn 2026. Vimeo On Demand, the old way to rent or sell a film from your account, stopped new purchases, subscriptions and renewals on 21 September 2026 and shuts down on 20 November 2026, when streaming access to purchased titles ends [2]. Vimeo points sellers to Vimeo OTT, now also called Vimeo Streaming. Its Starter tier has no upfront cost and charges $1 per subscriber a month, plus 2.5% and $0.30 per card payment when Vimeo processes it. One-off sales and rentals cost 10% plus $0.50 each, and upload hours beyond the first free hour are sold in packs, the smallest at $99 for up to 10 hours.

The customer stories show what this looks like at scale. Dropout reports more than 10 million views a month and over 100 series on Vimeo Streaming, ClayShare grew a two-person pottery studio into an online business on OTT, and SotoMethod says paid subscribers grew 30 times without paid marketing. OTT also includes 100 free screeners a month for previews. Branded TV and mobile apps sit on Enterprise only. Our [Vimeo OTT guide](/articles/vimeo-ott) covers setup, fees and payouts in full.

What Vimeo.com does not offer is ad revenue. It does not monetize plays, so there is no revenue share for views. Ad-supported channels exist only on Vimeo OTT Enterprise, with your own Google Ad Manager account. If ad money is the plan, the YouTube Partner Program is the path: it asks for 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 qualified watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days, and the review typically takes about a month. Many creators split the work, building an audience in one place and keeping client cuts and premium releases on Vimeo. Our [Vimeo vs YouTube comparison](/articles/vimeo-vs-youtube) weighs that split.

## Free, Starter or Standard for a creator

Most creators choose between three plans, and the deciding features are privacy, downloads and branding rather than storage. The prices below come from Vimeo's pricing page, which labels paid plans per seat [3]. Annual billing is the cheaper way to pay. Advanced and Enterprise exist too, but they are built around live events and large teams, so we leave them out here.

| Plan | Billed annually | Billed monthly | Storage | What it adds for creators |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Free | $0 | $0 | Unlimited for public videos with embedding off; 3 GB shared by embeddable and non-public videos | Showcases, one review link per video, no password-protected videos or downloads of uploaded videos |
| Starter | $12 per seat a month | $20 per seat a month | 2TB | Passwords and unlisted links, custom URL, player customization, downloads |
| Standard | $25 per seat a month | $41 per seat a month | 4TB, 5 seats included | Branding, watermark, portfolios, stock assets, AI script generator, more review links |

### Reading the plans as a creator

The Free plan changed on 7 October 2026. Public videos with embedding turned off now get unlimited storage and bandwidth, while embeddable and non-public videos share 3 GB and 1TB of bandwidth a month. It has one seat, no ads, recordings up to 30 minutes each and no password or player controls, and the new Free tier is not currently offered in Italy or Austria. **Starter** is the solo filmmaker's plan: $12 per seat a month billed annually, or $20 billed monthly, with 2TB, passwords, downloads, source-file storage and a custom URL. Paid monthly for a full year, that comes to $240 against $144 on annual billing, by our arithmetic.

**Standard** fits small studios and anyone whose name should sit on the player: $25 per seat a month billed annually, or $41 billed monthly, with 5 seats included and 4TB. On the same basis, monthly billing for a year comes to $492 against $300 per seat. Confirm the checkout total for the included seats before you pay, since the pricing page does not state it. Standard adds branding, portfolios, stock assets, the AI script generator, folder review links and showcase customization. AI subtitle translation is paid in AI credits on paid plans, which get 250 free credits once that expire after 30 days; Free gets none, and AI dubbing is Enterprise only.

Starter, Standard and Advanced have a 2TB monthly bandwidth threshold (Enterprise bandwidth is custom), and accounts that pass it repeatedly can be asked to upgrade or have playback suspended. Refunds are self-serve for the initial purchase only, within 14 days of an annual purchase or 3 days of a monthly one, with nothing back on renewals, trial conversions, App Store purchases or add-ons such as seats added later or AI credits. Plans renew automatically. Vimeo is also testing a new lineup of plans on some accounts, so check what your own account offers before you upgrade. ## Copyright, music and AI: the rules that can end an account

Music is the most common way creators get in trouble on Vimeo. You are responsible for every license in what you upload, and Vimeo may scan uploads automatically for copyrighted matches, asking you to act as soon as possible, preferably within 48 hours. Vimeo does not license music on your behalf. It says that as an ad-free platform it does not monetize plays, so it has no revenue to offer rights holders. Use music you have cleared, the royalty-free stock music in Vimeo's editor, or Creative Commons tracks with the right license. Music from the YouTube Audio Library is limited to YouTube use. You can appeal a match on fair use grounds.

The repeat-infringer policy is strict. Read it once. Three copyright strikes disable an account, though several takedowns on the same day may count as one strike [4]. A strike comes off only if the claimant withdraws it or you win a counter-notification. After a counter-notice, the claimant has ten business days to report a lawsuit. A terminated account can be fully restored within 90 days if the strikes are resolved, and Temporary Access Mode gives one week to download your non-infringing videos. Keep your own backups. Vimeo also asks creators to label realistic videos made with generative AI or altered media.

On AI training, Vimeo's position is clear and creator-friendly. It says it will not allow generative AI models to be trained on hosted videos without explicit consent, even on the Free plan, and that its third-party AI providers have agreed not to train on customer inputs or outputs. For filmmakers worried about their footage feeding a model, that is a meaningful promise in writing. It covers Free accounts too.

## FAQ

**Is Vimeo good for filmmakers?**

For showing work and handling clients, yes: the player is ad-free up to 4K with HDR, on Standard and up showcases can run on your own domain, and review links carry time-coded comments. It does little for discovery in the EU and UK and pays nothing for views.

**Can I still sell films on Vimeo On Demand?**

No. New purchases and renewals stopped on 21 September 2026 and the service shuts down on 20 November 2026. Vimeo points sellers to Vimeo OTT: subscriptions cost $1 per subscriber a month plus 2.5% and $0.30 per card payment when Vimeo processes it; one-off sales or rentals cost 10% plus $0.50 each, card processing included.

**Can clients comment without a Vimeo account?**

Yes. Since April 2026 reviewers can open and comment on a review link without an account; they give a name and email first. Free gets one review link per video.

**Are Staff Picks still available?**

Vimeo says the program continues, but in the EU and UK Staff Picks, Channels, Groups and Categories are no longer accessible, and Vimeo no longer promotes user videos there.

**Does Vimeo train AI on my videos?**

Vimeo says it will not allow generative AI models to be trained on hosted videos without explicit consent, even on the Free plan.

**Which Vimeo plan suits a solo creator?**

Starter, at $12 per seat a month billed annually or $20 billed monthly, adds passwords, unlisted links, downloads and a custom URL. Standard adds branding, portfolios and more review links.

## The bottom line

Vimeo is the right home for creators who sell their craft to clients, festivals and paying fans: an ad-free 4K player, branded showcases, review links clients can open without an account, Premiere Pro sync and screeners under a password. Start on Starter if you work alone and need passwords and downloads, and move to Standard when branding, portfolios or more review links matter. Do not expect discovery, especially in the EU and UK, or ad revenue from views (ad-supported channels need OTT Enterprise), and move any selling to Vimeo OTT before Vimeo On Demand closes on 20 November 2026.
