The short verdict: data depth or daily flexibility
Ahrefs and SE Ranking start at the same price, US$129 a month, and that is where the similarity ends. Ahrefs sells depth of data under strict terms: no trial, no refunds in general, weekly rank tracking and a single user per plan. SE Ranking sells flexibility, with a free trial, daily rank tracking on every plan and cheap extra seats, in exchange for a smaller index and weaker search volumes. Choose Ahrefs if backlink research and keyword data quality are your daily work. Choose SE Ranking if you manage many keywords for clients, need daily rankings and want to test before paying.
Teams that do both often keep Ahrefs for research and SE Ranking for tracking, a setup we cost out near the end. The two are closer in price than in philosophy. Much closer. Everything below comes from both vendors' own pricing and help pages, read from the US on 12 October 2026, and where one vendor makes claims about the other, we treat them as marketing until the other vendor's own page confirms them.
Use SE Ranking's 14-day trial, with no card, to check daily rank tracking on your own keywords before committing.
What each costs: plans, annual billing and seats
| Ahrefs | SE Ranking | |
|---|---|---|
| Entry plan, month-to-month | Lite, US$129 | Core, US$129 |
| Entry plan, billed annually (a month) | US$107.50 | US$103.20 |
| Middle plan, month-to-month | Standard, US$249 | Growth, US$279 |
| Middle plan, billed annually (a month) | US$207.50 | US$223.20 |
| Upper self-serve plan | Advanced, US$449 | None; Enterprise is custom |
| Annual discount | 16.7% | 20% |
Annual billing
SE Ranking discounts annual billing by 20%, applied automatically at checkout. Core then costs US$1,238.40 a year and Growth US$2,678.40. Ahrefs charges ten months for twelve: US$1,290 for Lite and US$2,490 for Standard [1]. On the entry plans, SE Ranking is therefore US$51.60 a year cheaper. Switching is easier on one side, too. Ahrefs requires a request to support to move to annual billing, and annual is paid at once, while SE Ranking can arrange quarterly payments on an annual commitment through sales.
What a team of three pays
Seats are where the bills diverge. Ahrefs includes one user on every self-serve plan, with extra users at US$40, US$60 or US$80 a month depending on the plan. SE Ranking includes one manager seat on Core and three on Growth, with extra seats from US$16 a month [2]. A three-person team pays US$161 a month on SE Ranking Core and US$209 on Ahrefs Lite. On the middle plans, three seats come included in Growth for US$279, while Ahrefs Standard with three users costs US$369. Shared logins are no way around it: SE Ranking allows only one active session at a time, and Ahrefs says sharing breaks its Terms and can get an account blocked.
Trial, refunds and the fine print
This is the clearest difference between the two. SE Ranking offers a free 14-day trial with no credit card, and its FAQ says the trial includes up to 10 projects, 750 tracked keywords a day and 20 AI prompts a day. Ahrefs offers no trial at all. Its help center says it plainly: "We don't provide any free trials" [3]. The closest substitute is Ahrefs Free on your own verified sites. That helps. It does not show competitors.
Neither vendor is generous on refunds. SE Ranking's pricing FAQ says payments are non-refundable except where the service was not delivered as promised. Ahrefs does not issue refunds in general, with an exception for unused monthly accounts. In practice, SE Ranking's trial makes its refund rule matter much less, because you have already tested the product before your card is charged. On Ahrefs, the safest start is monthly Lite.
SE Ranking's own FAQ says its search volume figures trail both Ahrefs and Semrush, so lean on Ahrefs for keyword research.
Plan changes and custom deals also differ. SE Ranking lets you upgrade or downgrade at any time from billing settings, and offers custom plans through sales when limits go beyond its standard tiers. Ahrefs prorates upgrades immediately and applies downgrades at the end of the period, and it says its base plans cannot be configured with customized features or pricing, so only Enterprise is negotiated. Payment methods follow the same pattern. SE Ranking runs payments through Stripe, accepting cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Link, plus bank transfer or direct debit in some countries. Ahrefs accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express and UnionPay, and reserves wire transfer for Enterprise contracts at US$17,988 a year or more.
Rank tracking: daily versus weekly
For many buyers, this one row decides the comparison. SE Ranking tracks daily on every plan: 2,000 keywords on Core and 5,000 on Growth, covering the top 100 results on Google, Bing and YouTube on desktop and mobile. Ahrefs tracks 750 keywords on Lite and 2,000 on Standard, updated weekly [1]. Daily data on Ahrefs requires the separate Rank Tracker Pro add-on. An agency reporting rankings to clients feels this at once, because a client who checks Google on a Tuesday will not accept a report that is up to six days old, and paying extra for daily data erases Ahrefs' price advantage.
Cost per tracked keyword
On the entry plans, SE Ranking Core costs about 6.5 cents a month per daily-tracked keyword, while Ahrefs Lite costs about 17 cents per weekly-tracked keyword. The gap widens if you buy the daily add-on. Extra keywords on SE Ranking start at US$22.40 on Core. Take an agency tracking 3,000 keywords for clients every day. SE Ranking Growth covers it with 5,000 daily keywords and three seats for US$279 a month. On Ahrefs, 3,000 keywords need Advanced at US$449, and they update weekly unless daily tracking is bought separately. That is at least US$170 a month, or US$2,040 a year, more.
What each tracker does well
Ahrefs' Rank Tracker covers 190+ locations down to ZIP code and 19 SERP features, including AI Overviews. Its unusual trick is importing ranking history from Site Explorer, so a keyword you add today shows past positions straight away. SE Ranking tracks 35+ SERP features and keeps a cached copy of each SERP, so you can check exactly what the results page looked like when a position was recorded. Both work well. The choice comes down to frequency and volume, not features.
Ahrefs Starter at US$29 a month covers occasional backlink and keyword lookups next to SE Ranking Core, for less than Ahrefs Standard alone.
Backlink, keyword and traffic data
On data, Ahrefs is far ahead, and SE Ranking says so itself. Ahrefs lists 35 trillion external backlinks in its history and says its live index is updated every 15 to 30 minutes. SE Ranking lists 2.7 trillion backlinks across 420 million domains, with 6 billion pages crawled daily, although its own comparison page quotes 3 trillion instead. Keywords tell the same story. Ahrefs counts 28.7 billion filtered keywords in 217 locations, against 5.4 billion across 188 geographic databases for SE Ranking.
The most useful sentence on either vendor's site comes from SE Ranking's FAQ: "The one area still catching up is search volume, where SE Ranking's figures currently trail both competitors" [4]. Those competitors are Ahrefs and Semrush. For keyword research, Ahrefs is the stronger tool. Traffic estimates are closer. SE Ranking claims that in its own benchmarking its domain traffic estimates match Ahrefs, and Ahrefs updated its traffic model in 2026 with an Adaptive mode calibrated monthly against real Web Analytics data. Both remain estimates. Fifteen of our 100 sampled Ahrefs Trustpilot reviews dispute traffic numbers, which is a fair reminder to treat any traffic figure as a range.
Site audits, history, exports and projects
The allowances pull in opposite directions here. Ahrefs' Site Audit checks for 170+ issues and is free on verified sites; Lite crawls up to 100,000 pages a month and 25,000 per project. SE Ranking's Core crawls 250,000 pages a month per account, with up to 250,000 per project, so for a single large site on an entry plan, SE Ranking crawls more. History favors SE Ranking's middle plan. Ahrefs keeps six months of history on Lite and two years on Standard, while SE Ranking keeps six months on Core and the whole project lifetime on Growth.
Exports go the other way. Ahrefs Lite allows 500,000 rows a month, against 50,000 on SE Ranking Core and 100,000 on Growth, so data-heavy researchers get more out of Ahrefs. Projects favor SE Ranking again. Ahrefs Lite allows 5 unverified projects and unlimited verified ones, while SE Ranking Core allows 10 projects and Growth 30. For an agency adding client sites it cannot verify, SE Ranking's entry plan holds twice as many; on Ahrefs, verifying each client site through Search Console removes the limit. For on-page work, SE Ranking sells a separate On-Page SEO Checker, while Ahrefs handles on-page issues inside Site Audit and its Patches add-on. Both cover titles, meta descriptions and headings.
Content, local SEO, social and AI visibility
SE Ranking packs more into its base plans. It includes a content marketing tool with 25 articles a month on Core and 50 on Growth, while Ahrefs sells AI Content Helper inside a content add-on from US$99 a month, with one free document a month. SE Ranking's plans also include local marketing: 3 locations, 1,500 local and map tracking keywords and listings in 100+ directories. Ahrefs offers GBP Monitor, still in beta, for managing Google Business Profiles. Social is the exception. Ahrefs includes Social Media Manager free while it is in beta, while SE Ranking sells social media management through its sister product Planable, from US$33 a month, with 20% off when bundled.
AI visibility splits the same way. Ahrefs includes custom AI prompts on every paid plan from Lite, 5 to 20 a day, and sells the AI Visibility Index from US$199 a month, inside the same product as Brand Radar. SE Ranking includes 100 prompts a day on Core and 250 on Growth, with an AI Search add-on from US$89 a month, and its FAQ says visibility in AI answers is handled separately by the sister product SE Visible. On included prompts, SE Ranking is more generous. On index depth, Ahrefs' 476 million prompts lead, and teams that want one login for search and AI may prefer its setup.
API, reporting and integrations
Both include API and MCP access on their entry plans. Ahrefs gives 200,000 API units a month on Lite, while SE Ranking gives 25,000 API credits on Core and 100,000 on Growth, and also sells a standalone API plan from US$179 a month. Units and credits are not the same measure. Run the same backlink export for one competitor domain on both trial or free accounts, and note how much of each allowance it consumed. That is the only fair comparison.
Reporting favors agencies on SE Ranking. Ahrefs' Report Builder allows 5 reports on Lite and Standard and 15 on Advanced, and a US$99 add-on raises that to 50. SE Ranking includes 10 reports on Core and 30 on Growth, and sells white label in its Agency Pack for US$69 a month, on annual billing only. It also offers view-only guest links for clients, while Ahrefs reserves guest access for Enterprise. On integrations, SE Ranking lists Data Studio, Matomo, GA and GSC on Core, plus Make.com and n8n connections for its API. Ahrefs connects Search Console on every plan and Looker Studio from Advanced, and runs Ahrefs Connect, an integration program built on API v3.
Ahrefs offers no free trial and does not issue refunds in general, so start on monthly Lite rather than annual.
Support, security and the road to Enterprise
Ahrefs publishes its support figures: 91.2% satisfaction and a median first response under six minutes, five days a week. SE Ranking offers chat and email support to all customers, Customer Success help on higher tiers and dedicated support on Growth. Neither offers phone support on the pages we read. On security, Ahrefs is ISO 27001 certified and offers SAML SSO on Enterprise. SE Ranking supports Google sign-in and two-factor authentication, and says enterprise SSO via SAML or OIDC is not a standard feature but can be discussed. For regulated teams, Ahrefs Enterprise is the more complete option. It costs more.
At the top end, Ahrefs' Enterprise plan has a public starting price, US$1,499 a month on an annual commitment, with SSO, audit logs and uncapped API access. SE Ranking's Enterprise plan is custom-priced, with custom limits and full API access. Large companies get a known number from Ahrefs and a negotiation from SE Ranking. Both companies are independent of the big software groups, unlike Semrush, which Adobe acquired in 2026. Ahrefs is a bootstrapped Singapore company, and SE Ranking is run by SER Acquisition Inc., according to its site footer, and says it is trusted by 40,000+ agencies.
Free tools, switching and using both
Ahrefs has the stronger free offer. Ahrefs Free gives Site Explorer and Site Audit on verified sites at no cost, and Ahrefs adds a larger set of free web tools, from a backlink checker showing the top 20 links to a keyword generator and SERP checker. SE Ranking has no permanent free plan, only the trial and free daily checks of its rank checker, traffic checker and keyword research tools without an account. If you own one site and only need its data, Ahrefs Free may be all you need. Our guide to Ahrefs pricing covers every paid tier if you need more.
Switching toward SE Ranking is easy to try. It offers free assisted migration with annual plans and self-serve import of projects and ranking history on monthly plans. Moving the other way, Ahrefs can import past rankings from its own Site Explorer data, not from SE Ranking. Many teams avoid choosing at all. Ahrefs Starter at US$29 a month gives occasional competitor and keyword lookups, while SE Ranking Core at US$129 handles daily rankings and client reports. That US$158 a month costs less than Ahrefs Standard alone.
Which one to choose
Link builders, content researchers and SEO consultants who value data depth should choose Ahrefs. Its backlink index, Content Explorer and keyword database are larger, and it suits teams that want a strong free tier for their own sites. Start on monthly Lite, since there is no trial. Agencies tracking thousands of keywords daily, small teams that need several seats, and anyone who wants to test before paying should choose SE Ranking. Its Core plan includes daily tracking, local tools, content tools and API access at the same US$129. Accept weaker search-volume data as the trade-off. It is real.
On the software review platforms, Ahrefs rates well, while its Trustpilot score is much lower. We have not yet collected SE Ranking's ratings for this comparison, so we draw no conclusion between the two from stars, and we would treat star ratings as a weak signal next to the plan limits anyway. Be equally wary of the comparison pages. SE Ranking's page praises its own rank tracker and calls Ahrefs often considered overpriced, and its backlink figure differs from SE Ranking's own data page. Ahrefs' pages contradict each other too. Trust the pricing pages over the comparison pages. If neither tool fits, our Ahrefs alternatives guide covers the wider field.

The bottom line
At the same US$129, SE Ranking gives more allowances, a free trial, daily tracking and cheaper seats, while Ahrefs gives better data and a stronger free tier for sites you own. The decision usually comes down to where your working day starts. If it starts with who links to whom, choose Ahrefs and begin on monthly Lite. If it starts with where do we rank today, choose SE Ranking and use the 14-day trial to confirm the daily tracking before you pay. And if both questions matter, Ahrefs Starter next to SE Ranking Core covers them for less than Ahrefs Standard.
