Who gets to download a Vimeo video

Downloading from Vimeo is a permission, not a feature anyone can switch on from the outside. A viewer can download a video only when its owner has enabled downloads [1]. When the owner has, a Download button appears on the video's page on vimeo.com and offers one or more files. When the owner has not, there is no button, and no setting on your side changes that. Owners are in a different position. They always see the download button on their own videos, whatever the download settings say, but actually downloading uploaded videos from the library needs a paid plan.

That split shapes the whole guide. The first half is for viewers: how the button works, what the login rule means, and what to do when the button is missing. The second half is for owners: getting your own files out, deciding who else can download, and reaching files at scale through the API. A short section covers purchased Vimeo On Demand titles, which lose streaming access on 20 November 2026. This guide covers only Vimeo's own methods, the ones Vimeo itself describes. Everything below comes from Vimeo's own help center, product pages, terms and developer documentation.

Downloading as a viewer, step by step

The button on vimeo.com

The download route for viewers is short. Open the video on its own page on vimeo.com rather than inside someone's website, then look for the Download button, which shows on the video page only when the owner has turned downloads on. The choice of files depends on what the creator allows. Vimeo's own guide to the feature describes options that range from SD at 240p up to HD at 1080p, plus the original file the owner uploaded. Pick the size that fits your purpose: a small file for a phone or a slide deck, the original for editing or archiving. One limit applies on the website. Bulk downloading is not supported there, so each video is a separate download.

Why you sometimes need to log in

The login rule surprises people. You must be logged in to download the source file of a Public video. Logged-out visitors can still get the source files of Unlisted and password-protected videos, so the rule is specific to public uploads. If the original file is missing from your list on a public video, signing in to any Vimeo account is the first thing to try. The help center ties this rule to being signed in, not to any plan. The smaller transcoded sizes are a separate matter and follow the owner's settings.

Toolkit tip
Log in for the original file

On a public video, the source file is offered only to logged-in viewers. Unlisted and password-protected videos do not have that rule.

Download links do not expire

Owners should know one detail before they share a file link. Vimeo's help center says download links are permanent, and anyone who has the link can download the video. A link is effectively a copy. If you send a direct download link to a client, assume it can be forwarded to people you never meant to reach. Vimeo's file-transfer links come with a stated off switch: they stay active until you disable downloads on the video. For viewers, the practical point is simpler: a link the owner sent you is meant to keep working.

When there is no download button

The embedded player never offers one

Most failed download attempts have the same cause. It is the embed. The video sits in an embedded player on a company site, a course page or a blog, and viewers cannot download from the embedded player at all. Vimeo's comparison of player features lists download among the options the embed does not carry, alongside the description, view counts and comments. The help center adds that there is currently no way for an owner to make a video downloadable inside the embed. If the owner has enabled downloads, the button lives on the video's own page on vimeo.com, so the only route is to find that page.

Ask the owner

When the vimeo.com page has no button either, the owner has chosen not to allow downloads, or is on a plan that cannot allow them. The honest route is to ask. Owners can say yes. A short message explaining what you need the file for, and for how long, gives the owner something to say yes to. An owner on a paid plan can turn downloads on for that video, then off again later. On phones there is a middle path. The Vimeo apps for iOS and Android support offline playlists, and the Android app lets viewers save any playable video for watching without a connection. Those offline copies play only inside the Vimeo app and cannot be exported.

Respect the copyright

A video without a download button is still someone's work. Vimeo enforces copyright through formal DMCA takedown notices, which rights holders can file online, by email or by mail to its copyright agent. Vimeo disables any account that receives three copyright strikes, and it aims to remove videos named in valid notices within one or two business days. Getting a file you were not given and posting it is the fastest way to end up on the wrong side of those rules. If the work matters to you, the owner's permission is the only safe source.

Downloading your own videos

The plan rule comes first

Owners always see the button on their own video page, but the library help pages are clear that Free members cannot download uploaded videos from their own account, and cannot enable downloads for viewers either. The library download is a paid-plan feature; videos made in Vimeo's editor are the exception, covered below. The cheapest plan that covers it is Starter, at $12 per seat a month billed annually or $20 billed monthly, and Vimeo's own pages place download permissions at Starter or higher [2]. Some older help pages still describe the rule with legacy plan names. If you are deciding whether downloads justify an upgrade, our guide to Vimeo's Free plan covers what else Free leaves out.

Source files and transcoded files

Two kinds of file come out of a Vimeo library. The source file is the original you uploaded, which is also the file your storage use is measured against. The transcoded files are the versions Vimeo creates for playback, offered as MP4 downloads in sizes from 240p to 1080p. Transcoding cannot improve quality, and a transcoded file can even end up larger than the upload. The source file needs one setting first. Storing originals requires a paid plan and a manual switch in Account Settings; paid members who never turn storage on lose them permanently. If the plan lapses, stored originals are deleted after 60 days and cannot be recovered. Check that setting now.

⚠️
Watch out
Turn on source storage now

On a paid plan, source files are permanently deleted unless you enable storage in Account Settings; Free accounts cannot store them, and stored originals are kept only while the plan stays paid. Without them, you can only download the transcoded versions later.

Editor exports, languages and transcripts

Videos built in Vimeo's editor follow their own rules. Vimeo's editor pages say they download up to 1080p on every plan, Free included, with no 4K export; the paid-plan rule above covers uploaded videos. If an editor video uses Vimeo stock music, post it with Publish to Social; a downloaded copy uploaded as a file can be flagged for copyright. A video with several audio tracks can be downloaded in one language only. Transcripts are separate files. Viewing and downloading existing ones works on Free and on every paid plan, for anyone with edit access, and captions download as .srt, .vtt or .ttml files. Captions from live events are saved with the archive and download as WebVTT.

Downloading from Vimeo's mobile and desktop apps

The mobile apps download your own videos, with one catch. On iOS you save your video with Save to Camera Roll, but the app hands over transcoded files only; original source files cannot be downloaded in the app. The separate Create app for Android and iOS can download your videos from its Video Options menu. The main mobile app also has bulk actions that download several of your videos to the device at once, or save them for offline viewing inside the app. That is the one place where the help pages describe downloading in bulk, since the web library offers no multi-video download.

On the desktop, the free macOS app handles uploads and Folder Sync, and it shows the same plan line as the website. Free members cannot enable downloading from the macOS app. Two side effects are worth knowing. Downloads made in the mobile apps are not tracked in Enterprise audit logs, so a security team reviewing who took what will not see them. And since the April 2025 analytics update, mobile downloads count in your analytics: the Downloads metric includes Watch later saves and Save to Photos or Camera Roll, from iOS app 11.8.0 and Android app 11.5.0. Your own logged-in downloads in the same browser are not counted.

Letting viewers download, or stopping them

Per video and per folder

Download permission is set on each video, and only paid plans can switch it on. When it is on and source storage is enabled, viewers can also download the stored source file, so turning downloads on shares your original unless you decide otherwise. Only the account owner can set the account's upload defaults. Enterprise accounts can also give each folder its own default link privacy, embed settings and download settings, and folder upload presets come at no extra charge on every Enterprise workspace. Those folder presets apply only at upload time. Moving an existing video into a folder does not change its settings, so check older videos separately.

Review links and showcases

Review links have a download setting of their own. When you share a video, or a whole folder on Standard and higher, for feedback, the link can allow or block downloads, commenting and review status, and on a paid plan it can add a password (Free gets one review link per video). The one-click default review settings remove the download button entirely, which suits a cut that is not yet approved. Showcases, Vimeo's branded video galleries, let you toggle the download button for playback, and download control on showcases starts at Standard. Before a client review, check the link's own download setting as well as the video's.

Check the review link setting

Review links have a download setting of their own; check it, as well as the video's, before sending a cut that is not yet approved.

Stronger ways to prevent downloads

Turning downloads off is the first step, and Vimeo lists it with watermarks and Private, Password or Unlisted privacy as protections against scraping. Its privacy page calls Private videos, which cannot be embedded anywhere, the strongest download protection. For video that must not leave the player, select Enterprise plans add DRM, which blocks downloads and screen recordings. While DRM is active, HLS and DASH downloads of the play files are disabled. Classic interactive videos have a different limit: their interactive features are tied to the Vimeo player, so a downloaded copy plays as a plain video.

Many videos at once: the API route

The web library has no bulk download. Code fills that gap. Teams that need files from many videos turn to the API. Direct file links need an access token with the public, private and video_files scopes [3], and the video_files scope covers members on Standard or higher. Standard costs $25 per seat a month billed annually or $41 billed monthly. The API returns three kinds of link, and each ages differently. Play links expire after 24 hours, download links stay valid for 24 hours, and files links do not expire, which is why Vimeo does not recommend them for third-party players. HLS files of uploaded videos, though not of live ones, can be downloaded once optimization and transcoding finish.

Two related rules matter for anyone building on this. Transcripts through the API need a personal token generated by the account owner of the video. Direct links shared for third-party players ignore Vimeo's privacy and embed settings and break with a 403 error if the URL is changed. Downgrading below Standard stops any direct file links you have shared or embedded in other players, and upgrading to Standard or higher reactivates them. If a script or a video archive depends on these links, the plan is part of the setup. For the wider developer picture, see our guide to Vimeo for developers.

Purchased On Demand titles before 20 November 2026

Vimeo On Demand is closing. The clock is running. New subscriptions and renewals stopped on 21 September 2026, and on 20 November 2026 streaming access to purchased titles ends [4]. If you bought titles there, act before that date. The help pages say only downloaded copies are kept after the shutdown. A Download button appears on a title only if the seller enabled downloads, and rentals cannot be downloaded at all. Where the seller allows it, the viewer terms let you keep a single copy for personal use. The license covers personal viewing only, not redistribution or public screenings.

If a title you bought has a button, download it before the deadline. If it has none, the seller decides, so asking the seller is the only option. Two cautions apply. Phones are not a route, because purchased videos cannot be downloaded to a phone from Vimeo; the mobile app only saves them for offline viewing inside the app, which is not a file you keep. And Vimeo's viewer terms say it does not guarantee that any purchased video stays available for download. Sellers moving their catalog should read our guide to Vimeo OTT, the service Vimeo now points them to.

Frequently asked questions

Can I download any video from Vimeo?+

No. You can download a video only when its owner has enabled downloads, in which case a Download button appears on the video's page on vimeo.com.

Why is there no download button on a Vimeo video?+

Either the owner has not enabled downloads, or you are watching in an embedded player on another site, which never offers downloads. Open the video's own vimeo.com page or ask the owner.

Can I download my own videos on the Free plan?+

Not uploaded ones. Vimeo's library help pages say Free members cannot download uploaded videos from their own account or let viewers download them; that needs a paid plan, starting with Starter. Videos made in Vimeo's editor are the exception: they download up to 1080p on every plan, Free included.

Do Vimeo download links expire?+

Direct download links shared from a video are permanent, and anyone with the link can use them. Through the API, download links are valid for 24 hours and files links do not expire.

Can I download several Vimeo videos at once?+

Not on the website; bulk downloading is not supported. The mobile app's bulk actions can download your own videos to the device, and developers can reach file links through the API with a token carrying the video_files scope, which needs Standard or higher.

What happens to On Demand videos I bought?+

Streaming access to purchased titles ends on 20 November 2026, and only downloaded copies remain. You can download a title only if the seller enabled downloads.

The bottom line

Downloading from Vimeo is simple when the owner says yes and closed when the owner says no. As a viewer, use the Download button on the video's own vimeo.com page, log in for public source files, and ask the owner when there is no button; the embedded player never offers one. As an owner, a paid plan unlocks downloads of your uploaded videos, the source-storage setting and a plan that stays paid decide whether originals survive, and per-video, per-folder and review-link settings decide who else gets a file. For volume, the API with the video_files scope is the route. If you bought On Demand titles, download what you are allowed to before 20 November 2026.
