It includes the core of what makes Notion, Notion — unlimited pages and blocks when you use the workspace alone (block limits apply once 2+ members share a Free workspace), databases with subtasks and dependencies, the six database views, basic forms and sites, Notion Calendar, and even trial access to AI features. The limits are sensible rather than crippling: 5MB maximum file uploads, 7-day page history, and 10 external guests. For a single person running their notes, tasks, wiki and a personal "second brain," the Free plan is often the whole story — you may never need to pay. Where you outgrow it is collaboration at scale, larger files, longer history, and the AI that comes with a paid seat — which is exactly what the paid tiers add.

The costs nobody mentions

Five things that don't show on the headline price but affect your real bill. The first two are the ones most people miss, because they're billed outside the per-member fee entirely:

1. Notion credits, for AI that sits outside your plan's allowance. Business and Enterprise include a usage allowance for certain AI features. Custom Agents and premium models use Notion credits separately — premium models consume credits even when used inside Notion Agent, and even before any allowance runs out. Owners can also enable credit spending so eligible AI usage continues after the allowance is exhausted. An AI usage allowance is not an included Custom Agent credit balance^[3]. Credits cost $10 per 1,000 monthly credits after a free trial. Basic Autofill is included on Business and Enterprise and uses none. Startups get up to 6 months of Business (with AI) free. The Notion for Startups program gives eligible companies free time on the Business plan — including Notion AI: 6 months for partner-affiliated startups (request a code from the partner), 3 months for non-partner startups, and 1 month for SMBs or teams under 10 employees. For an early-stage team, that's the AI-included tier free for a meaningful runway — well worth applying before you pay.

Enterprise: what to confirm before you sign

Enterprise is custom-priced (you talk to sales), so the useful move is knowing what you're actually buying beyond a bigger number. Over Business, Enterprise adds the controls a security or legal team asks for: zero data retention with the LLM providers (your prompts and content aren't kept by the model vendors — often the deciding factor for letting AI touch company data), SCIM user provisioning (auto-add/remove people from your identity provider), an audit log, DLP/SIEM connections, domain management (claim every account on your domain), and a customer success manager.
