The verdict, in one line
Semrush is the broadest search marketing platform we have reviewed. Keyword research, rank tracking, site audits, backlinks and AI visibility sit under one login, with six specialist toolkits sold alongside them [1]. For SEO professionals and agencies who use most of what it offers, Semrush earns its price. For a small business that needs a few keyword checks a month, it is expensive and easy to overbuy. Both can be true. The weak side is not the product but the way it is sold: in pieces, per account, with billing rules that generate most of its complaints. Those rules are strict, and Semrush's own help center and refund policy spell them out plainly.
Semrush calls itself a brand visibility management platform covering SEO, AI search, content marketing and paid media. In practice it is a set of research and tracking tools built on its own crawled data, which the company says comes from 17 years of continuous crawling, with AI visibility tracking added since 2025. It sells a self-serve product and a separate Enterprise offering for large organizations. The scale is real, even if the figures wobble: the press release puts users at over 28 million, while a free-account guide says 10M marketing professionals have used it. Treat any single figure as approximate.
Who it's for, and who should skip it
Semrush fits agencies and in-house SEO teams that use research, tracking, audits and reporting every week. The value comes from breadth, and breadth only pays when you touch most of it. Brands that want SEO and AI visibility in one place fit as well, since the same login tracks rankings and how often AI assistants mention the brand. Local multi-location businesses that want listings, reviews and Maps tracking in one place also fit, though Local is priced per location and the bill grows with every branch. The buyer who gets the most out of Semrush is one who will commit annually and can live with a 7-day refund window.
The wrong fit is easier to spot. Solo site owners who need occasional checks will do better on the free plan or a cheaper tool. Anyone who wants to try monthly and leave easily should think twice, because monthly plans carry no refund at all. Procurement teams that require SOC 2 or ISO 27001 reports should ask before signing, since we found neither claim on Semrush's pages. And if you need only one or two of its tools, a narrower rival will usually serve you better. None of this is a flaw in the software. It is a mismatch between a large, layered product and a small, occasional need.
Extra users start at US$45 a month and the six toolkits are sold separately. A Starter stack with Local, Content and Social comes to US$359 a month before users.
What you pay: plans, seats and toolkits
Semrush sells four paid plans plus a free one, all priced per account rather than per person. Prices and limits below come from the pricing page [2]; yearly totals are twelve times the monthly equivalent, our arithmetic. Enterprise is priced on request.
| Plan | Month-to-month | Billed annually (a month) | Yearly total | Sites / keywords tracked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | US$0 | US$0 | US$0 | 1 demo project / 10 |
| SEO | US$139 | US$117.33 | US$1,407.96 | 5 / 500 |
| Starter | US$199 | US$165.17 | US$1,982.04 | 5 / 500 |
| Pro+ | US$299 | US$248.17 | US$2,978.04 | 15 / 1,500 |
| Advanced | US$549 | US$455.67 | US$5,468.04 | 40 / 5,000 |
SEO or Starter: the US$60 question
The cheapest paid plan, SEO, covers keyword research, Position Tracking, Site Audit and basic AI visibility reports. It lacks a prompt-tracking quota, the AI-ready Site Audit and per-domain AI brand performance. Starter adds those, plus 50 tracked prompts a day and MCP access, for US$60 more a month. If AI search matters to you, Starter is the real entry point. Annual billing saves up to 17%, but not evenly: on the SEO plan the saving is 15.6%, on the others 17.0%, our arithmetic. It also means paying for the entire year upfront, which matters here, given the refund rules below.
Per account, not per seat
Prices cover one login. Extra users start at US$45 a month with the SEO plans, cost a flat US$20 for toolkits without SEO, and US$289 for Traffic & Market. View-only folder access is free, which helps when a client or a manager only needs to look. A three-person team on Starter therefore adds at least US$90 a month, our arithmetic. Account owners can pool limits or assign them per user, though Traffic & Market and AI Visibility cannot be shared through the pool. Units are always drawn from the project owner's account, whoever does the work. Price your seats before you pick a plan.
The toolkits, and what a full stack costs
Six toolkits are sold separately: Local from US$30 per location, Content at US$60, Social from US$20, Advertising from US$99, AI PR from US$149 and Traffic & Market from US$289 a month. None is included in Semrush One. This is where the headline price stops being the bill. Starter, Local Pro for one location, Content and Social Pro come to US$199 + US$60 + US$60 + US$40 = US$359 a month on monthly list prices, our arithmetic. Add two users and white-label reports and the bill passes US$450. The headline plan is rarely the whole bill. Count everything. Our Semrush pricing guide walks through every tier and add-on in detail.
The 7-day money-back guarantee covers only a first annual purchase or first add-on. Month-to-month subscriptions and trial conversions are not refundable.
The core SEO tools: deep, and built on its own data
Keyword research
The Keyword Magic Tool is the tool most buyers come for, and it delivers. It draws on over 27.3 billion keywords and groups results into topic subgroups, with question filters and SERP-feature data. Results show volume, difficulty, intent and SERP features, and paid plans add AI-powered personal keyword difficulty. Paid tiers run 3,000 to 10,000 reports a day and accept up to 100 seed keywords an hour, while free accounts get 10 reports with no export. For a casual user, the free limit is a taste, not a workflow.
Rank tracking
Position Tracking follows keywords daily across Google, Bing, Baidu, ChatGPT Search and Google AI Mode, by device and down to postal code. Semrush says the data is generally updated daily within 24-48 hours, so daily means a fresh reading each day rather than live positions. Daily points are kept for 60 days, then weekly for 140 weeks, which leaves plenty of history for client reporting. The tool also flags AI Overviews and featured-snippet opportunities for tracked keywords, and reports export to PDF for clients. It can even follow a location that has no keyword database of its own.
Site Audit
Site Audit runs over 140 on-page and technical SEO checks and adds an AI Search category that flags blocked AI crawlers. It checks up to 20,000 pages per audit, can render JavaScript, crawls desktop or mobile versions, and audits a domain, subdomain or subfolder. Recrawls can run daily or weekly. One quirk deserves attention before you build a setup around it: deleting a Site Audit campaign means deleting its whole project.
Backlinks and data coverage
Semrush says new links reach its database within an hour, about 40 minutes on average, and the interface refreshes every 15 minutes. Backlink Audit adds toxic-link review, outreach email and a disavow file for Google. It can pull up to 500 links per referring domain and send up to 500 removal emails a day through Gmail or Outlook, which keeps a link cleanup inside one tool. Coverage is wide overall. Semrush lists over 130 desktop databases and 18 mobile ones, and Traffic & Market covers 190 countries and regions. Mobile analysis, though, stops at the top 20 results.
AI visibility, MCP and where Semrush is heading
The AI Visibility Toolkit reports how often ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews and AI Mode mention a brand, with share of voice and sentiment. Semrush says its prompt data is captured from real requests rather than through the APIs of language models, and the prompt database covers 117 regional databases. Its AI Visibility Score combines how many topics mention a brand with how consistently they do so. Starter tracks 50 prompts a day and Advanced 200. Prompt counts vary by page, from 239 million to 317 million, one more reason to read Semrush's scale claims as approximate.
Buying AI visibility on its own
The AI Visibility Toolkit alone costs US$99 a month per domain on annual billing. For a brand that only wants AI monitoring, that is cheaper than Starter. For one that also needs keyword tracking, Starter at US$165.17 a month annually bundles both. Decide which question you are answering first.
MCP, the API and AI assistants
Starter and Pro+ include 50,000 MCP API units, used when an AI assistant queries Semrush. The connection is read-only and works with ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Cursor and VS Code. MCP queries consume units, and Semrush advises asking for a set number of results to save them. The full Standard API is a separate add-on for the top tier, sold in packages of 2 to 20 million units that expire at renewal. That expiry matters. Unused units do not carry over, so size an API package to what you will really pull.
A busy year of releases
Semrush launched an official ChatGPT app on 17 December 2025, an expanded AI Visibility Index on 26 June 2026, Crazy Egg in its App Center on 11 August and a Claude connector on 26 August. The direction is clear: AI search and AI assistants, layered on top of classic SEO.
Exporting data is disabled during trials, and the trial converts to a paid plan unless canceled. Pull what you need first.
Content, local, reporting and the other toolkits
Content and local
The SEO Writing Assistant scores drafts for SEO, readability, originality and tone, and works in Google Docs, WordPress and Word; its plagiarism check is based on Copyleaks. The Content Toolkit, at US$60 a month, adds unlimited standard AI articles and five SEO-boosted articles a month, supports up to 50 brand voices and publishes to up to 100 WordPress sites. The Local Toolkit manages Google Business Profiles with an AI agent, distributes listings to 70+ US directories and 40+ elsewhere, handles reviews and tracks Maps rankings. It is priced per location, US$30 or US$60 a month.
Reporting and integrations
My Reports builds scheduled PDF reports from Semrush, Google Analytics and Search Console data, at US$10 a report, or US$20 for white-label Pro reports. Agencies used to get these inside the Agency Growth Kit until it was discontinued, so they are now a line item of their own. Semrush connects to Google Analytics, Search Console and Looker Studio, Zapier, monday.com and Wix, and to Lovable for sites built there. An App Center adds paid third-party apps, including Crazy Egg since August 2026.
Traffic & Market, Advertising, Social and AI PR
Traffic & Market estimates any site's traffic, channels and audience, with up to 100 competitors and data back to 2017. It starts at US$289 a month billed annually, and its users cost from US$289 each. It is the most expensive toolkit and the one most buyers skip. Advertising researches competitors' search and Shopping ads and launches Google and Meta campaigns, from US$99. Social schedules posts across Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Google Business Profile and YouTube, from US$20. AI PR finds journalists and media cited by AI tools, from US$149.
The billing rules behind most complaints
The free plan and the trial
Free needs no card and gives 10 queries a day, a 100-page Site Audit, 10 tracked keywords and limited AI visibility data, plus basic Copilot recommendations and free AI writing tools. Projects carry over when you upgrade. It is enough to check one site occasionally. It is not enough to run SEO. That is deliberate. The trial works differently: most toolkits have a 7-day trial that needs a card and converts to a paid plan unless canceled. Exporting data is disabled during trials, each toolkit trial can be used once, and past customers are refused SEO and Traffic & Market trials.
Refunds
The refund policy offers a one-time 7-day money-back guarantee only for an initial annual purchase or an initial add-on [3]. It is blunt about the rest: "refunds are not available for month-to-month subscriptions." Trial conversions are excluded too. Approved refunds take up to 30 calendar days and return to the original card, and currency-conversion fees are yours. In practice, the monthly plan that looks like the low-commitment way to try Semrush is the one with no way back.
Cancelling, downgrading and renewal
Cancellation goes through a form and then a confirmation email, and the second step is the one people miss. Without confirmation within 24 hours, the cancellation "will not be processed, and billing will continue." [4] Cancellation takes effect at the end of the committed term. Downgrades go through support, and it is not possible to pause a subscription. Website-monitoring data is kept 30 days after a downgrade or cancellation, then deleted except for the oldest project. Subscriptions renew automatically at the then-applicable rate, and Semrush may change fees from the first day of a renewal. Most billing changes go through forms and support tickets rather than self-service. Keep the cancellation email.
Cancelling takes a form plus a confirmation link. If you do not click it within 24 hours, the cancellation is not processed and billing continues.
Ownership, terms, security and support
Adobe now owns Semrush
Adobe completed its acquisition of Semrush Holdings on 28 April 2026. Adobe's customer FAQ promises no immediate changes to current services, agreements or points of contact, and says there will be no changes to existing contracts and agreements at this time. Semrush keeps its own site, plans and billing. For now, little has changed.
Legal terms, data and security
The Terms require binding individual arbitration under Massachusetts law, with an opt-out within 30 days, and Semrush caps its liability at the greater of US$50 or three months of fees. The AI Terms say Semrush does not train its models on user input, nor let its third-party providers do so; named providers include OpenAI. On security, Semrush publishes PCI DSS Level 1 certification, annual penetration tests, a bug bounty, two-factor authentication and SSO. Service data sits in US data centers run by AWS, Google Cloud and Digital Realty. We found no SOC 2 or ISO 27001 claim on its pages.
Support, documentation and the pages that disagree
The developer portal lists a US phone line, open 12:00 to 5:00 PM Eastern on weekdays, and a support email. Documentation is broad: about 560 help-center articles, free Academy courses with certificates, and a developer portal with unit-cost examples. The weak spot is consistency. The help center's SEO Toolkit article still sells Pro, Guru and Business at US$139.95, US$249.95 and US$499.95, while the pricing page sells SEO, Starter, Pro+ and Advanced at US$139 to US$549.
The comparison pages still quote the SEO Toolkit from $139.95, with data dated May 2025. We counted 13 contradictions in all. User totals, keyword counts and prompt counts vary by page; the API article limits the API to the top tier while the MCP article includes units on Starter; and the security page offers SSO on request while pricing lists it under Enterprise. Check limits in the app, not in an article. Trust the app.
What users say about Semrush
Business-software reviewers on G2 and Capterra rate Semrush highly, and Semrush's own testimonials stress data depth and competitive research. Trustpilot tells a very different story. In our 100 most recent Trustpilot reviews, 87 gave one star. Of those 100, 76 mention billing or subscriptions, 59 cancellation, 57 refunds and 39 the trial. The pattern matches the written policy exactly, and nothing in it is hidden. The two pictures fit together: the product works, the billing frustrates. Both ratings are honest.
Semrush next to Ahrefs, SE Ranking and Moz
Ahrefs lists Lite at US$129, Standard at US$249 and Advanced at US$449 a month, with a US$29 Starter and a free tier, and it also charges per extra user. Semrush has more toolkits, while Ahrefs Lite tracks more keywords, 750 against 500. Ahrefs' Enterprise plan is US$1,499 a month with annual commitment and says it does not train on your data; Semrush prices Enterprise on request. Our Semrush vs Ahrefs comparison covers the two in depth.
SE Ranking's Core plan is US$129 a month, or US$103.20 annually, with a 14-day trial and no card. Moz Pro starts at US$99 a month, or US$79 annually. Both are cheaper entry points with narrower suites. Our Semrush alternatives guide lays out the wider field.
How we score Semrush
This review uses Semrush's pricing page read from the US, its help center, legal pages and blog as of 12 October 2026, plus public ratings. All arithmetic is ours. The score follows our SEO category rubric, where capability and value carry the most weight, and the reasoning for each axis sits on the card below.
The broadest search platform we have reviewed: keyword research on a 27-billion-keyword database, Position Tracking across Google, Bing, Baidu, ChatGPT Search and Google AI Mode down to ZIP code, a 140-check Site Audit with AI-crawler checks, backlink research with links reported in about 40 minutes, AI visibility and prompt research, plus Local, Content, Social, Advertising, AI PR and Traffic & Market toolkits. Held back by the depth being split across toolkits bought separately, and by limits per tier (5, 15 or 40 sites; 500 to 5,000 tracked keywords).
A single login and a large Academy, but a modular catalog of four plans, six specialist toolkits, per-user add-ons, report fees and API units that buyers must assemble themselves. Legacy names (Pro, Guru, Business, SEO Classic) still appear beside the new ones in the help center, and limits are counted per tool.
AI Visibility Toolkit with share of voice, sentiment and prompt tracking across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews and AI Mode on a prompt database captured from real requests; an AI article generator, Copilot, GBP AI Agent and an official MCP server for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Cursor and VS Code. AI Terms say user input is not used for training. Held back by prompt-tracking quotas of 50 to 200 and prompt-count figures that vary from 239M to 317M across Semrush's own pages.
Priced per account at $139 to $549 a month, with every specialist toolkit, extra user ($45+), white-label report ($20) and API package extra. Annual saves up to 17% but is paid upfront; month-to-month plans and renewals are not refundable, and the 7-day refund covers only a first annual purchase. Ahrefs, SE Ranking and Moz start lower for comparable SEO tiers.
Google Analytics, Search Console, Looker Studio, Zapier, WordPress, Wix, monday.com, an App Center with third-party apps, Standard and Trends APIs, Projects API and an MCP server with 50,000 units on Starter and Pro+. Held back by the Standard API being limited to the top tier with units sold separately and expiring at renewal.
About 560 help-center articles, free Academy courses and certifications, a developer portal with release notes and unit-cost examples. Points lost to 13 contradictions, chiefly a help center that still sells the retired Pro, Guru and Business plans at $139.95/$249.95/$499.95 and comparison pages marked 'Data as of May 2025'.
Published security practices (PCI DSS Level 1, annual penetration tests, bug bounty, 2FA, SSO) and a 99.9% uptime effort by its cloud providers, but no SOC 2 or ISO 27001 on the pages we read. Cancellation needs a form and a 24-hour confirmation link, downgrades go through support, and 49 of our 100 Trustpilot sample reviews mention support, mostly about refunds.
Split by platform. G2 4.4 from 4,067 and Capterra 4.6 from 2,329 (both Google-indexed on 12 October 2026) against Trustpilot 1.6 from 1,416, where our 100-review sample has 87 one-star reviews, 76 about billing, 59 about cancellation and 57 about refunds. Axis score 4.0: the mean of each platform owner's displayed rating with at least 30 reviews, weighted by review count (Trustpilot 1.6 (1,416); G2 4.4 (4,067); Capterra 4.6 (2,329); 7,812 reviews in all), with Capterra, GetApp and Software Advice counted once as Gartner.
Weighted across the axes above (weights reflect what actually drives the decision in this category). How we score →
That lands Semrush at 3.8/5 in the SEO category: strong on capability, integrations and AI, held back by value for money and support. In short, the product is excellent and the way it is sold pulls the score down, which is exactly the trade every buyer should weigh before entering a card.

The bottom line
Semrush is the most complete toolset in its field and one of the strictest to leave. Buy it deliberately: decide which toolkits you need, price extra users, choose annual billing only if you are certain, set a reminder before renewal, and export what you need before a trial ends. If you are not sure, cancel through the form and click the confirmation link within 24 hours. If you need only one or two of its tools, the free plan or a narrower rival will serve you better.
