What embedding a Vimeo video really involves

You upload a video, copy a short block of code, paste it into your site, and the Vimeo player shows up there with no ads before, during or after playback. Every plan can do it, Free included. What changes from plan to plan is control: who can embed the video, where it can play, what the player looks like and what it asks viewers to do. Free embeds carry a small Vimeo watermark. Starter opens privacy and styling, Standard adds branding, cards and lead capture, and Advanced is the first plan that can embed a live event player.

This guide follows the order you meet things. First the code and the site builders, then privacy, then the player settings each plan unlocks, the tools inside the player and the developer route. It closes with analytics, bandwidth and fixes for common errors. We read the help pages, the developer documentation and the pricing page. We did not run a site on Vimeo ourselves.

Getting the embed code and making it fit

The embed code lives in each video's share options, and it only appears when the owner allows embedding. No code on a video means a setting, not a bug. Embedded videos update on their own when you change appearance settings in Vimeo, so there is no need to re-embed after a color or control change [1]. That makes the routine short:

The same holds for the file. Uploading a new version keeps the video ID, URL, embed code, chapters, captions and analytics history, so a typo in a product demo becomes a file swap. With responsive embeds, white space above and below the player comes from the padding percentage, which you adjust to the video's shape. Developers get a cleaner route, since Vimeo recommends oEmbed over building an iframe by hand. The player background is transparent by default, but Vimeo does not support alpha channel transparency in uploaded files.

WordPress, Squarespace, Wix and other platforms

Vimeo's pages name a long list of places its iframe works: WordPress, Squarespace, Webflow, Wix and Framer, stores on Shopify and WooCommerce, course platforms like Teachable and Kajabi, and intranets such as SharePoint and Notion. In WordPress, pasting a plain Vimeo URL into the editor renders an embed with no plugin. That is the fastest path. It is also the most limited.

A plain URL cannot carry player parameters. The help center says parameters fail when an app accepts only a vimeo.com link, and lists social posts, WordPress plugins and the Wix and Squarespace plugins as examples. For autoplay, a start time, default captions or hidden controls, paste the full embed code into an HTML or custom-code block. Vimeo also prefers its own generated code over third-party plugins, and for recurring live events it says URL-paste widgets generally do not work well. Use the iframe there too.

💡
Toolkit tip
Paste the code, not the link

A plain vimeo.com URL in a WordPress, Wix or Squarespace block cannot carry player parameters. Use the full embed code in an HTML block when you need autoplay, captions or hidden controls.

Two cases sit outside the normal flow. A playlist is embedded by creating a showcase, and one set to Embed only plays on your site while staying invisible on vimeo.com. Selling video works differently. Vimeo OTT lets only a product's trailer be embedded on an outside site, and subscribers watch on the OTT-hosted site. Vimeo On Demand, which let embeds rent or buy a title, stopped new purchases and renewals on 21 September 2026 and shuts down on 20 November 2026.

Who can watch: privacy built for embeds

Two privacy settings are made for embedding, and both need a paid plan. Embed only, renamed from Hide from Vimeo on 13 July 2026, shows the video on other sites while hiding its vimeo.com page from everyone but the owner. Unlisted means only people with the link or embed code can watch, and Vimeo advises it for embedded videos so search engines link to your page rather than to vimeo.com. Password-protected videos embed too, and viewers need no Vimeo account. Private is the trap. A private video embedded elsewhere is visible only to your own account and team.

Domain lists, and how Free counts embeds

The second layer decides where an embed may play. The settings offer Anywhere, Nowhere or Specific domains, and on paid plans one video can be limited to up to 50 domains, with no wildcards. Nowhere blocks everyone, your own team included. When a site off the list tries to load the video, the player checks the referrer and shows an error. Enterprise admins can also lock domain privacy so team members cannot change the approved list.

The Free plan counts embeds strictly. Since 7 October 2026, public videos with embedding off do not count toward Free storage, but every embeddable video counts toward the 3 GB pool, even a public one, alongside non-public videos. Those videos also share a 1TB monthly bandwidth threshold. A Free account that posts only public videos with embedding turned off can grow without limit. One that embeds on its own site fills 3 GB and then has to choose. Our guide to what the Free plan covers has the detail.

What each plan lets you change in the player

Embed feature Free Starter Standard Advanced
Vimeo watermark on embeds Shown Removed Removed Removed
Unlisted, password, Embed only No Yes Yes Yes
Embed domain list (up to 50) No Yes Yes Yes
Player colors and control toggles Size, autoplay, mute, loop only Yes Yes Yes
Custom logo and embed presets No No Yes Yes
Third-party player support No No Yes Yes
Cards, CTAs and lead capture No No Yes Yes
Live event player embed No No No Yes

Free embeds can change only the player size, embed privacy and the autoplay, mute and loop behavior. Every paid plan can hide the Vimeo logo, play bar, volume control and fullscreen button, set colors with HEX or RGB values, and toggle controls such as captions, transcript, speed, chapters, casting and picture-in-picture. A Hide all switch strips the player bare. Custom colors apply to embeds and to private or unlisted video pages, not to public ones. A custom logo, from Standard up, sits in the lower right corner of the player, though Vimeo's help pages differ on whether it also shows on vimeo.com pages.

What the plans cost

The pricing page labels its prices per seat [2]. Starter costs $12 per seat a month billed annually ($144 a year) or $20 billed monthly. Standard costs $25 per seat a month billed annually ($300 a year) or $41 billed monthly. Advanced costs $75 per seat a month billed annually ($900 a year) or $125 billed monthly. Seats included run from one on the entry plan to five and ten higher up, so confirm the checkout total.

Stepping up to the middle plan for logo branding and cards adds $156 a year per seat on annual billing, by our arithmetic. Refunds are self-serve for the initial purchase only, within 14 days of an annual plan or 3 days of a monthly one, with none on renewals, trial conversions, add-ons or App Store purchases. Vimeo is also testing a new lineup on some accounts, so check yours. Our Vimeo pricing guide has the rest.

Third-party players and their trade-offs

Third-party player support starts at Standard and runs through direct file links loaded in another player. Those links ignore Vimeo's privacy and embed settings, do not expire, and break if the URL is modified. Downgrading below Standard breaks shared links, and Vimeo can only estimate plays in other players. DRM-protected videos do not work on third-party players at all. For most sites the Vimeo player is safer.

Chapters, captions, cards and calls to action

A video can hold up to 80 chapters, each title up to 50 characters, and chapters work only in the Vimeo player. Markers show on desktop, while phones and iPads show only the chapters menu. The Free plan page and the chapters help page list chapters on Free, while older pages put them on Starter. Test on your plan. Chapter links also do not work on Embed only videos.

Captions travel with the embed. The CC button appears only when a video has captions, and since June 2026 several subtitle tracks show directly in its menu. To switch captions on by default, add a texttrack parameter with a lowercase ISO 639-1 code; auto-generated English captions use en-x-autogen. Embedded players also offer a transcript view and any extra audio tracks you upload. AI subtitle translation costs AI credits, which only paid plans receive, and AI dubbing is Enterprise only.

⚠️
Watch out
Cards switch off sharing controls

Adding a card disables the Like, Watch Later and Share controls, and cards appear only in players at least 600px wide in horizontal mode.

Cards and custom calls to action start at Standard. You can place up to one card per second of video, with at least six seconds between them, and they show only in players at least 600px wide in horizontal mode. Adding a card disables the Like, Watch Later and Share controls, and videos with cards need a JavaScript wrapper in the embed code. End screens show in embeds and on unlisted or password-protected pages, though a small embedded player supports only the thumbnail, empty and loop types.

Lead capture also begins at Standard. Registration forms can sit before, during or after an embedded video and in showcases, so you can gate a whole video or ask for an email at the end. The pricing page puts the marketing integrations that sync those contacts to tools like HubSpot and Mailchimp on Advanced. Consent matters here. Under the VPPA, viewers must opt in before their viewing data is shared with you.

Parameters, presets and the Player SDK

Parameters are short additions to the player URL that change one embed. Autoplay and loop work on every plan, but most others, including quality, colors, controls, speed and picture-in-picture, work only on videos hosted on paid plans [3]. Several are joined with ampersands, and on unlisted videos the extras go after the privacy hash, or the embed breaks. The most useful are these:

Embed presets save you from repeating all this. A preset is a reusable set of player appearance and behavior settings for Standard and Advanced members, and it can include your logo. You apply one to many videos at once, and only the account owner can create them. Only embed presets can hold an end screen, though one video's end screen can also be set on its own. Some defaults no longer need code. Since mid-2026, autoplay and audio defaults can be set once for all embeds, looping toggles in embed settings, and the share button and right-click menu can be switched off on any embed.

The SDK for developers

When parameters are not enough, the Player SDK takes over. It is a JavaScript library, separate from the REST API, loaded from player.vimeo.com/api/player.js or installed from npm as @vimeo/player. It can build players from data-vimeo-id or data-vimeo-url attributes and listen for play, pause, ended and timeupdate events to drive your own interface. Three limits apply. Unlisted videos need the full URL with the h parameter, not the ID. The SDK does not cover live events. Interactive videos, whose hotspot clicks surface as SDK events, require a custom Enterprise account. See our guide to Vimeo for developers for the API side.

Measuring embedded plays, and the bandwidth they use

Vimeo counts an impression each time the player loads and a view when someone presses play. Since 7 August 2024, both count only the Vimeo player, and loads in other players through direct file links are a separate metric called third-party impressions. Free accounts get basic analytics, including the source URLs where a video is embedded, while Starter and up add engagement reports such as viewer retention. Some numbers will run low. The dnt parameter and adblockers can cut what the player logs, nothing is tracked in Google Slides or PowerPoint, and a source shown only as a slash means the page's referrer policy is too strict.

Every embedded play also draws on bandwidth. Starter, Standard and Advanced have a 2TB monthly threshold, and Vimeo does not stop streaming when an account passes it. It reaches out after more than 2TB in a month at least twice in 12 months, or more than 10TB once, then gives 7 days to agree on a fix [4]. Without one, Vimeo can require an upgrade to a bigger plan or temporarily suspend the account, and its videos then stop playing everywhere they are embedded. Its terms also allow fees for excessive usage. Vimeo says over 99% of users never reach the threshold. Extra accounts do not raise it.

Embedded viewers also see less than vimeo.com visitors. Description, view counts, tags, comments and the download button are missing from the embedded player, and there is no way to make an embedded video downloadable. Viewers who need the file have to go to the video page on vimeo.com, where owners on paid plans can choose to allow downloads. That route does not exist for Embed only videos, whose vimeo.com page only the owner sees, and a viewer must be logged in to download a public video's source file. No embed setting changes that.

Fixing the embed problems people hit most

Start with search, since a working embed can still be invisible to Google. To count as prominent, an embedded video must fill at least a third of the page width and sit fully in view on load. Vimeo's embeds already include VideoObject structured data, so only the layout needs a look. Most broken embeds trace back to a few causes. Check these before you contact support:

Toolkit tip
Lock the domains before launch

Add your site to the embed domain list and test the page. If it shows a privacy error, check that your referrer policy is not set to no-referrer or same-origin.

Frequently asked questions

Can I embed Vimeo videos on the Free plan?+

Yes. Embedding is included on every plan, but Free embeds show a small Vimeo watermark, allow only size, embed privacy, autoplay, mute and loop changes, and every embeddable video counts toward the 3 GB pool.

How do I embed a Vimeo video on WordPress?+

Pasting a Vimeo URL renders an embed without a plugin, but a plain URL cannot carry player parameters. For autoplay, captions or hidden controls, paste the full embed code into an HTML block.

How do I stop other sites from embedding my Vimeo videos?+

On any plan, including Free, set embed privacy to Nowhere to block all embedding. On a paid plan you can instead choose Specific domains and list up to 50 sites; sites not on the list get an error instead of the video.

What is Embed only on Vimeo?+

It is the privacy setting renamed from Hide from Vimeo on 13 July 2026. The video plays where you embed it, while its vimeo.com page stays hidden from everyone but the owner. It needs a paid plan.

Can viewers download an embedded Vimeo video?+

No. The embedded player has no download button and cannot be made to offer one. Owners on paid plans can allow downloads from the vimeo.com video page instead, which Embed only videos lack, and viewers must be logged in to download a public video's source file.

Do embedded plays count toward Vimeo bandwidth?+

Yes. Starter, Standard and Advanced have a 2TB monthly threshold, and on Free, embeddable and non-public videos share 1TB a month. On those paid plans, Vimeo reaches out after more than 2TB in a month twice in 12 months or more than 10TB once, gives 7 days to agree on a fix, and can then require an upgrade or suspend playback.

The bottom line

Embedding Vimeo is easy on every plan; controlling it is what you pay for. Stay on Free only if you accept the watermark, a 3 GB pool for anything embeddable and almost no styling. Starter is the real starting point for business sites, with domain lists, Embed only, player colors and most parameters. Move to Standard for your logo, embed presets, cards or lead forms, and to Advanced for live embeds and marketing sync. On any plan, paste the full embed code rather than a bare link, and watch bandwidth if your videos draw heavy traffic.
