What Vimeo live streaming is, and which plans get it
Vimeo runs live broadcasts and webinars from the same account where you host your videos. One workflow covers both event types, so a webinar is simply a live event with registration, reminder emails and attendee management switched on. Live starts at Advanced. The Free, Starter and Standard plans cannot go live at all. The self-serve plan that can is Advanced, at $75 per seat a month billed annually ($900 a year) or $125 billed monthly [1]. Above it sits Enterprise, which has no published price and is sold through the sales team on 12-month terms. To test first, use a seven-day Advanced trial, which charges unless cancelled, or a 10-minute free demo.
Older help pages still describe a Premium plan with live features. It is no longer sold, and its live features now sit in Advanced or Enterprise. Advanced includes 10 seats, but the pricing page does not state the checkout total for them, so confirm it before you pay. Per seat, twelve monthly payments of $125 come to $1,500, against $900 for a year paid upfront, by our arithmetic. Vimeo is also testing a new lineup on some accounts, where live events sit in plans called Professional and Studio. Check your own account. Refunds cover the initial purchase only: 14 days on annual and 3 days on monthly plans, with none on renewals, trial conversions or add-ons, and plans renew automatically.
What the Advanced plan gives you for live
Advanced allows two concurrent events, each up to 12 hours long [2], and webinars of up to 100 registrants per event. You can bring in up to seven guest speakers, simulcast to other platforms, let viewers rewind with DVR and run prerecorded events on a schedule. Engagement tools cover chat, polls and Q&A, and registrants can flow into Constant Contact, HubSpot, Mailchimp, Keap or Campaign Monitor. The plan also includes one license of Livestream Studio, Vimeo's desktop production software, plus chat support during events.
The limits matter more than the list. A hundred registrants is a small webinar: fine for a customer onboarding session, tight for a public launch. Two concurrent events let a team run parallel sessions, but a scheduled prerecorded event will not start if the account is already at its limit; Vimeo emails the owner instead. Advanced webinars also come without attendee-specific analytics. You learn how many watched, not who. If any of those limits already pinches, read the Enterprise section first.

Stage 1: create the event and set up registration
Everything starts in the Live Events dashboard, which comes free with every plan that has live access. Since March 2026 it shows one calendar for all scheduled and active events, with warnings when streams would overlap. Team owners and admins create webinars, while contributors can manage and produce them in folders they can reach. At setup you choose whether registration, chat and automatic captions are on, and a Reuse Settings option copies captions, DVR, latency, player and folder choices from an earlier event. That saves real time.
Registration forms take up to 20 custom fields and can be saved as presets. Reminder emails are built in, up to 10 per webinar, with the one-day reminder on by default; customizing the emails themselves needs Enterprise with the Events add-on. Attendees you add in bulk through a CSV file, a CRM or the API get no confirmation email, though they still receive reminders. If you sync to HubSpot, the sync stops when the webinar ends or runs past two hours, so last-minute registrants can be missed. Privacy options are public, private, password, unlisted and embed only, with one password per event.
Stage 2: pick a production tool, browser or encoder
Vimeo gives you two ways to produce. The browser production tool runs in the browser with webcams, USB cameras, capture cards and screen sharing, and it is the only route to Vimeo's built-in guest speakers, Vimeo-platform graphics, prerecorded scheduling and Q&A shown on the stream. Encoders add graphics in their own software. An external encoder sends the stream over RTMP, RTMPS or SRT from software such as OBS, vMix or Wirecast, or hardware such as Teradek. Choose the encoder for a multi-camera crew. Choose the browser for everything else. The browser studio needs several network ports open for WebRTC, so check with IT before an office event.
Encoder settings on Advanced top out at H.264, 1920 x 1080, 30 frames per second and 5000 Kbps, with a key frame every 2 to 3 seconds (help pages give both); Enterprise with Events allows 60 frames per second at 9000 Kbps. SRT on Vimeo runs at 1080p30 and has no multiple audio tracks, no extended streaming and no fail-safe streaming. If your encoder has no stream key field, append the key to the RTMP URL after a forward slash. An RTMPS error about verifying the URL may clear once you add port 443. In encoder mode, share your screen through the encoder.
Livestream Studio is Vimeo's own take on the encoder route. It is a desktop encoder for 64-bit Windows 10 or macOS Monterey and later, built for multi-camera switching, with up to 50 inputs and up to four isolated recordings. Vimeo's Studio page calls it the only encoder that can send H.265, though the SRT page lists H.265 as supported over SRT. H.265 gives the same quality at about half the bitrate: a 1080p stream averages 4-5 Mbps in H.264 and 2-3 Mbps in H.265. Choosing H.265 disables Studio's other streaming destinations. Remote guests join Studio from Chrome, up to five on Advanced and ten on Enterprise.
The browser studio handles guests, slides, graphics and prerecorded scheduling; an external encoder suits multi-camera switchers. Pick one per event before you build scenes.
Stage 3: build scenes, bring in guests and add slides
In the browser tool, an event is a set of scenes: layouts that combine your camera, guests, screen share, slides, backgrounds and graphics, with scene templates as a starting point. Lower thirds are created automatically for you and every guest, with name and title. Speakers can blur or replace their backgrounds, and a teleprompter works for host and guests alike. Guest speakers cannot move the camera feed or moderate Q&A. One person should produce. That person owns the switching, the chat and the clock for the whole event.
Guests need a desktop or laptop with a webcam and microphone. Phones are not supported. Vimeo lists Chrome 58, Firefox 56 or Safari 12 and later, and a connection of 5 to 10 Mbps at minimum. Send those requirements with the invitation, not on the day. Since June 2026, Google Slides can be presented natively inside a live event, replacing the old habit of sharing a browser tab or uploading a PDF. Once a guest is in the scene, they can step through uploaded slides with the arrows below the preview player, which frees the producer to watch the audience.
Prerecorded and simulive events
Not every event needs to be live. The browser tool can record camera, screen and guests without going live, then stream the result later as a prerecorded event, and you can play an uploaded video into a scheduled event, a format Vimeo calls simulive. Scheduled prerecorded events start on their own, but only from the browser tool, and a start time less than a minute away will not trigger. Polls still need someone to launch them by hand. Captions baked into the uploaded video do not show during live playback, so switch on live captions instead.
Stage 4: test, go live and simulcast
Preview before you go live. Stream preview works with external encoders over RTMP, RTMPS or SRT, and a stream health graph tracks the last ten minutes of bitrate and frame rate. Auto captions never appear in the preview player, even after you go live, so check them on the public page. Decide on latency early. Low latency suits heavy chat but lowers quality slightly, and it cannot be combined with automatic captions. Audience chat is off by default and shows only the 100 most recent messages.
Simulcast sends one stream to up to 10 integrated destinations plus 20 custom RTMP destinations per event, or 30 in all [3]. Help pages list Facebook, YouTube and LinkedIn as direct integrations and treat Instagram, TikTok and Twitch as RTMP targets, while newer product pages call them integrated, so check the destination list in your account. Only the account owner can make the first Facebook or LinkedIn connection. YouTube needs a verified account and Facebook groups need RTMP. In the browser tool, simulcast settings are locked once you go live. Plan them beforehand.
Simulcast viewers get less. Automatic captions do not travel to the other platforms, and Q&A and polls stay native to the Vimeo broadcast, so the social audience sees a thinner event than registered attendees. Simulcast for reach, Vimeo for engagement. DVR is on by default and lets viewers rewind the most recent four hours of a stream. On a full 12-hour event that is a third of the broadcast, by our arithmetic, though the whole event is archived once it ends. Chat, polls and Q&A are capped at 80,000 participants.
Low-latency streaming and automatic captions cannot be on together, and live caption translation also needs normal latency. Choose accessibility or speed before the event.
Live captions and what they now cost
Automatic live captions are available on Advanced and on Enterprise with the Events add-on, and since May 12, 2026 they support 99 languages, up from five. You pick one caption language per event and can change it before or during the stream. A custom word list of up to 50 terms, such as product names, improves recognition. Captions are saved with the archived video and can be downloaded as WebVTT. Manual captions also work if your RTMP source already carries them, and Livestream Studio can pass them through from an SDI input. Real-time translation of live captions is Enterprise only.
The billing changed on June 1, 2026. Live auto captions now draw 10 AI credits per minute from the same pool as other AI features [4], and only while the automatic captions toggle is on. A one-hour captioned webinar therefore uses 600 credits. Paid plans get a one-time grant of 250 free credits that expires after 30 days and does not renew, which covers 25 minutes of captioning, by our arithmetic. Free and trial accounts get none. Annual caption-hour entitlements were converted into credits at the same rate. It adds up fast. Running out does not stop the event, but extra usage may be charged, and credits cannot be pre-bought in bundles or refunded. Check the balance first.
After the event: recordings, follow-up and analytics
When the stream ends, the recording sits on the same event URL and gets its own video ID in your library. Webinars stay available on demand. Archived streams are capped at 1080p60. If you forget to end a webinar, Vimeo completes it once it has stopped streaming for more than 6 hours past the scheduled end. Download the chat transcript, a .txt file kept for 30 days, and write down poll results before you leave, because Vimeo does not store them after the event. The Q&A history, with your answers, can be exported too. Do it the same day.
Live analytics work in browser and encoder mode, and post-event reports cover live and archive viewers from the last 30 days. Peak viewers is the highest concurrent count in a 30-second window, and live views are counted every 30 seconds, so short visits are missed in the live count and only show up after archiving. Your own logged-in views do not count. Several tabs on one device count as several views but one unique viewer. Views in third-party players that use the M3U8 link never reach Vimeo, and LinkedIn simulcast numbers appear only after the stream ends.
The webinar reports are where Advanced feels thin. There are no attendee-specific analytics, and webinar viewership leaves out anyone who watched after the live session. Attendee lists still sync to your connected marketing tools, and follow-up emails go out automatically. Enterprise shows what share of the event each registrant watched and passes attendance, watch time and interactivity to the CRM. If your sales team scores leads on webinar engagement, that alone can decide the plan. Ask sales to show you.
Poll results are not stored after the event and the chat transcript is kept for 30 days. Note the results and download the transcript before you close the dashboard.
What Enterprise adds for large or high-stakes events
Enterprise suits town halls, conferences and events that cannot fail, but its live features need the Events add-on. With it, Enterprise runs three concurrent events, with add-ons for more, and adds Live API access. Registration goes past 100: the pricing page shows 500+, the help center up to 500 per event. The Essentials package, a type of Enterprise plan, lists 100, so check the contract. For reliability it offers backup streams, where a second encoder or Studio license sends to a separate backup key and takes over automatically, and fail-safe streaming, which with a third-party encoder needs a Vimeo app on the encoding device, adds 60-70 seconds of delay and does not work over SRT.
It also brings three Studio licenses, ten remote guests in Studio, moderated and anonymous Q&A, live events in showcases and custom webinar emails. The eCDN uses peer-to-peer delivery through Kollective or Hive Streaming to ease the load on a company network, but it overrides low latency, and DVR reduces its efficiency. The 4K add-on streams in 2K or 4K over RTMP from an external encoder only, not over SRT or from the browser studio. Vimeo cannot upscale a 1080p feed. Real-time caption translation covers 99 languages, up to 10 at once, locked when the stream starts. Interpreter audio tracks let viewers pick a language within one concurrent slot. Extended 24/7 streaming is an add-on with no DVR, recording or simulcast.
The retired pieces you will still find in search
Livestream.com, the older platform Vimeo ran, is gone. Its broadcasting ended on February 3, 2025, logins ended in June 2025, and the remaining videos were deleted. Livestream Studio survived as Vimeo's desktop encoder and old dongle licenses and existing Studio hardware keep working, though the hardware is no longer sold, and Studio Web Control and the Studio Remote Camera app lost support in October 2025. In the developer API, one-time live events are being deprecated in favor of recurring ones. Many help pages still mention Premium or Livestream. Treat them as history.
Selling live tickets has moved too. The live events tab in the Vimeo OTT dashboard was removed on February 1, 2025, and OTT live streams now run through Vimeo Events, with live pay-per-view and subscriptions on the OTT Enterprise plan. Vimeo On Demand, the older storefront, stopped new purchases and renewals on September 21, 2026 and shuts down on November 20, 2026, so do not build a paid event around it. Our Vimeo OTT guide covers the selling side.
Frequently asked questions
Can I live stream on Vimeo for free?+
Not on a regular basis. Live events and webinars start at Advanced, at $75 per seat a month billed annually or $125 billed monthly; Free, Starter and Standard cannot go live. You can test live with a seven-day Advanced trial, which converts and charges unless you cancel, or with a free demo limited to 10 minutes of streaming.
How many registrants can a Vimeo webinar have?+
On Advanced, registration is capped at 100 registrants per event. Enterprise with the Events add-on goes further: the pricing page shows 500+, the help center up to 500 per event. Not every Enterprise package lifts the cap: Vimeo's Essentials package lists 100 webinar registrants, so confirm your cap in the contract.
How many platforms can Vimeo simulcast to?+
Up to 10 integrated destinations plus 20 custom RTMP destinations per event, such as YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, TikTok or Twitch.
Do Vimeo live captions cost extra?+
Yes, in effect: since June 1, 2026, automatic live captions use 10 AI credits per minute, or 600 for a one-hour event. Paid plans get a one-time grant of 250 free credits (about 25 minutes) that expires after 30 days and does not renew; Free and trial accounts get none, and extra usage may be charged depending on your plan.
Can I use OBS with Vimeo live?+
Yes. Any encoder that streams over RTMP works, and Vimeo also accepts RTMPS and SRT. On Advanced the limits are H.264, 1080p, 30 frames per second and 5000 Kbps.
What happened to Livestream.com?+
Vimeo shut it down: broadcasting ended on February 3, 2025 and the remaining videos were deleted in June 2025. Livestream Studio continues as Vimeo's desktop encoder.
The bottom line
Vimeo live is a solid pick for teams that already host video on Vimeo and run modest webinars, demos and broadcasts. Advanced covers two events at a time, 100 registrants, guests, slides, simulcast and captions in one browser studio. Build in the browser unless you have a crew, test captions on the public page, and budget credits for every captioned minute. Move to Enterprise with the Events add-on for big audiences, backup streams, attendee-level analytics or caption translation. Skip it if you need hundreds of registrants on a self-serve plan.
