Everything Ahrefs gives learners for free

Ahrefs is unusually generous to people who are learning SEO. Its Academy courses are free, its certification exam is free, and teachers can apply for free access to the whole toolset for their classes. This guide covers every education offer, from Ahrefs' own pages as of 12 October 2026. The short version is simple. Students and self-learners can take every Academy course and the certification exam without paying [1]. Educators can apply to Ahrefs for Education for free classroom access. Individual students cannot apply on their own; their instructor has to do it for them. And there is no student discount on the paid plans.

Toolkit tip
Take How to Use Ahrefs first

Ahrefs recommends the How to Use Ahrefs course as preparation for the certification exam. It covers every tool the exam asks about.

Where to start in the Academy

Ahrefs Academy is a library of free video courses that need no sign-up at all. Ahrefs' own marketers teach them, including CMO Tim Soulo and VP of Marketing Sam Oh. That has two sides. The courses show the tools in real use, which suits anyone who will open Ahrefs at work. They also promote Ahrefs' own way of doing SEO.

The SEO Course for Beginners

A true beginner should start here. The SEO Course for Beginners has 14 lessons in 5 modules and runs about two hours. Sam Oh teaches it, and it covers keyword research, on-page SEO, link building and the basics of technical SEO. Ahrefs pitches it at anyone who knows nothing about SEO yet, and it does not assume you have an account. It is the shortest route from zero to understanding what the tools are actually measuring, which makes every later course easier to follow.

How to Use Ahrefs

The second step is the tool course itself. How to Use Ahrefs has 62 lessons split into 12 modules and runs 3 hours 18 minutes. It opens with Ahrefs' crawler, its index and its SEO metrics, then walks through the account, the Dashboard, Site Explorer report by report, Keywords Explorer, Site Audit, Rank Tracker and the other tools. It is aimed at new and existing users and at anyone curious about SEO. Ahrefs recommends it as preparation for the certification exam. Take it before you sit the exam.

Toolkit tip
Ask your instructor to apply

Only educators can apply for Ahrefs for Education. If your course uses SEO tools, ask your professor or instructor to apply on behalf of the course.

Once the basics are in place, the Academy branches into specialist courses. Each one is free, and each suits a different kind of student. Beyond the two starter courses, the catalog adds an Advanced Link Building course with 15 lessons, an Affiliate Marketing course with 16, an AEO course with 12, How to Use Brand Radar with 10 and an API course with 7. The Best of AhrefsTV then collects 28 YouTube tutorials.

Content and link building

Blogging for Business is the most complete course for anyone heading into content marketing. It has 40 lessons in 11 modules and runs nearly five hours, teaching content strategy, keyword research, optimization, promotion and outreach from Ahrefs' own playbook. It ends with interviews with Noah Kagan, Bryan Harris and Ramsay Taplin. It is long. The Advanced Link Building course is tighter, with 15 lessons over 1 hour 48 minutes. It teaches a seed and lookalike approach to prospecting, a blitz list to validate campaigns, outreach writing and how to structure a link building team, and it targets intermediate and advanced link builders and team leads.

AI search: the AEO and Brand Radar courses

The Answer Engine Optimization course is new, free and worth a student's time in 2026. In 12 lessons and about 1.5 hours, it explains how AI search works and how to get a brand recommended across the major AI platforms. The modules move from how AI search works through strategy and execution to measuring results, with lessons on brand gap analysis, prompt research, getting cited, YouTube for AI search, and robots.txt, GPTBot and llms.txt. One lesson shows how to track AI traffic in GA4 and Ahrefs Web Analytics. It covers what older SEO courses miss.

The How to Use Brand Radar course is a quick companion to it: 10 lessons in 29 minutes, taught by product marketer Andrei Țiț. It covers the Overview, AI responses, custom prompts, topics, cited pages, YouTube and Reddit visibility, search queries and web pages. It suits marketers and SEOs who want to measure AI visibility rather than just read about it.

The API course

Learn Ahrefs API is a short beginner course of 7 lessons in 11 minutes, and it needs no technical background. The videos cover creating API keys, a free testing environment, request parameters, calculating API units and reducing their cost. API access itself needs Lite or higher, but the free testing environment lets a student practice without a paid plan. For data-minded students, it is a quick and painless introduction.

Collections and the Best of AhrefsTV

Collections group YouTube tutorials by topic: content marketing, digital marketing, keyword research, local SEO, technical SEO and video marketing. The Keyword Research collection has 11 lessons, including one on how reliable Keyword Difficulty scores are; Local SEO has four, covering local keyword research and citations; Technical SEO has eight, from HTTPS to Core Web Vitals. None of them needs enrollment.

The Digital Marketing Course collection is aimed at career starters, small business owners and bloggers, with lessons on starting a career, the skills to master and how to prioritize, plus a full SEO course, a blogging course and an advanced link building course. For students still choosing a specialty, it is a broad first look. The Best of AhrefsTV gathers 28 YouTube lessons, about 5 hours 49 minutes, into modules on keyword research, link building, content marketing and technical SEO, with link building the longest.

The certification exam: rules and what you earn

The Ahrefs Certification exam has 67 questions, a one-hour limit and a 75% pass mark [2]. You need an Ahrefs account, but it does not have to be a paid one. You get three attempts, and after that you wait 15 days before trying again. The exam itself is free. Truly free. That makes it one of the easiest credentials a marketing student can add, provided the How to Use Ahrefs course comes first.

The certificate, its color and its expiry

A passed exam earns a shareable certificate "valid for 1 year", with a QR code that lets employers check it. Ahrefs explains the one-year limit as a way to keep certified users current with new features. The color shows account status: blue certificates go to non-paying users, including Ahrefs Free users, while black ones are reserved for paying customers. A student on a free account will get a blue one. Employers are unlikely to care about the color, but it is worth knowing before you share it.

⚠️
Watch out
The certificate expires

The certificate is valid for 1 year. Plan to retake the exam each year if you list it on a CV or LinkedIn.

Putting it on LinkedIn, and whether it is worth it

Ahrefs explains how to add the certificate to LinkedIn's Licenses and Certifications section, with Ahrefs as the issuing organization and the certificate URL as the credential. Is the exam worth it? For a marketing student, yes: it is free, takes an hour and shows hands-on knowledge of a widely used tool. It proves tool skill, not strategy. Pair it with a real project, such as auditing a site with Ahrefs Free. Employers who use Ahrefs will value it most, because the candidate already knows the reports their team opens every day. Plan to renew it each year, since an expired certificate on a profile signals the opposite of what a job seeker wants.

Ahrefs for Education: full access, through a teacher

Ahrefs for Education is the offer that gives real tool access. It provides educators with "free access to our full suite of marketing and SEO tools", for academic use only, so students learn on the same tools professionals use [3]. Ahrefs reviews each application to make sure the tools are used strictly for education. This matters because the Academy alone teaches the tools without letting students touch them. With the program in place, a class can audit live sites and research real keywords.

Who can apply

Three groups are eligible. University educators at accredited colleges qualify, as do independent course creators who run structured marketing courses and training instructors on recognized platforms, bootcamps or corporate programs. Students are not on that list. The program is for educators and institutions, not individual students, which is the single rule that trips up most people who search for a student version of Ahrefs.

How to apply

Educators first sign up for a free Ahrefs account at the Webmaster Tools address, which Ahrefs uses to activate access. They then fill in an application about the course, the institution and the classes, and Ahrefs reviews it and replies by email. Apply well before the semester starts. Ahrefs reviews every application by hand to confirm academic use, and a course that begins before access is confirmed will lose its first practical weeks.

⚠️
Watch out
Students cannot apply alone

Ahrefs for Education is for educators and institutions, not individual students, and there is no student discount on paid plans.

What a student can do alone

A student whose course does not use Ahrefs has no way into the full platform, and buying in at a discount is not an option either. Ahrefs does not run discounts, and that includes students [4]. Its help center says there are no promo codes, and nonprofits get no special pricing either. Ask your professor or instructor to apply on behalf of the course. Until then, three free routes cover most of what a class would teach.

Ahrefs Free on your own site

A student with a personal website can verify it and use Site Explorer, Site Audit and Web Analytics for free. That is enough for a genuine hands-on SEO project: audit the site, fix the issues, then track backlinks and visitors over the term. Competitor research and keyword research need a paid plan or the free tools. Our guide to the free tier has more.

Free tools for case studies

Some free tools work without any verification. The Backlink Checker shows the top 20 links to any site, the Keyword Generator gives keyword ideas, the SERP Checker shows the top 10 results for any keyword, and the Website Traffic Checker estimates traffic. Together they let a student build a case study on any company, not just their own site. That makes them the natural start for a competitor analysis assignment.

Webinars, the blog and the YouTube channel

Ahrefs runs free live webinars, usually an hour long, on topics from AI Overviews to digital PR, and a 30-minute session called Get up and running with Ahrefs suits complete beginners. Students can attend for free and ask questions live, and recordings of past sessions stay available, so a missed session is not lost. Few vendors do this. For a class, a live session also makes an easy homework task.

The blog, podcast and YouTube channel are free too, and Ahrefs' alternatives post says the channel has over 15 million views and 540,000 subscribers. Ahrefs' help center points new users to the Academy, the blog and YouTube, and highlights a lesson on low-hanging traffic opportunities as a quick win. Its 2021 beginner guide lists 11 use cases to try first, from checking competitors' traffic to finding link prospects, and the blog's research posts make good primary sources for coursework.

Teaching with Ahrefs: projects and exercises

For educators, the full suite opens up real projects rather than screenshots. A semester project could pair the SEO Course for Beginners with a live site audit, keyword research in Keywords Explorer and a backlink analysis of a competitor, and the certification exam makes a natural final assessment. Brand Radar and the AEO course give ready material on AI visibility. Brand Radar's data comes from People Also Ask questions linked to real searches, which makes it a good classroom case on how AI search draws on traditional search data.

Lessons in data literacy

Ahrefs is candid about its own estimates, which turns them into teaching material. Its help center says search volume is always an estimate, and its study found its volumes roughly accurate for 60% of keywords against Search Console, versus 45% for Keyword Planner. That is a ready lesson on why marketing data needs checking. Its beginner guide adds that its traffic numbers differ from Search Console but the gap stays consistent across sites in the same niche: if Ahrefs shows 20% less traffic for your site, it likely under-reports competitors by a similar amount. Students can test this by comparing Ahrefs with Search Console for their own site.

A case study on search intent

Ahrefs' story about its own traffic checker page, which grew from 2,840 to about 75,000 monthly visits after it matched search intent, is a clear case study. Students can repeat the method on any keyword: check what format ranks, then match it. Keywords Explorer's SERP overview shows the format of the top results. The lesson for students is that matching what already ranks can matter as much as the keyword itself.

Privacy in shared workspaces

Students working in a shared workspace see the same data, including search history and keyword lists, whatever their role, and Ahrefs says it plans to make these private later. Separate workspaces per student group avoid mixing coursework and stop one group from seeing another's research before an assignment is graded, though the Ahrefs for Education terms decide the setup. Instructors on bootcamps and corporate programs can apply too.

Learning paths, and where the free offers stop

A few routes through the material make sense. A beginner can take the SEO Course for Beginners, then How to Use Ahrefs, then the certification. A content marketer fits Blogging for Business and the AEO course. A developer can start with the API course. Each path is free. All of them. The beginner course explains what the metrics mean, the tool course shows where to find them, and the exam checks both.

The limits are just as clear. The Academy teaches, but it does not give tool access. The certification needs an account, though not a paid one. Ahrefs for Education gives access, but only through an educator. A self-taught learner without a class gets courses and free tools, not the full platform. Few SEO vendors offer a free full-toolset program for classes, free courses and a free certificate together, but the eligibility rule matters when you compare: Ahrefs' program excludes individual students. For what the paid plans cost once school is over, see our Ahrefs pricing guide.

The bottom line

Educators should apply early and use the exam as a final assessment. Students should start with the beginner course and add the certificate to their profile.
