Where keyword research happens in Ahrefs
Keyword research in Ahrefs happens in Keywords Explorer, with a free Keyword Generator for quick ideas. The short version of the process fits in one breath. Enter seed keywords, open the Matching terms and Related terms reports, filter by Keyword Difficulty and volume, and group the ideas by Parent Topic. Then use Traffic Potential rather than search volume to choose what to target. This guide walks through each step and explains the metrics Ahrefs uses, what they measure and where they mislead. All details come from Ahrefs' own pages and help center as of 12 October 2026.
| Free Keyword Generator | Starter | Lite | Standard and up | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Keyword ideas | 150 per search | Yes, with credits | Yes, with credits | Unlimited use |
| Keyword lists | No | 5 | 50 | 100 to 500 |
| History | No | 1 month | 6 months | 2 to 5 years |
| Clusters and AI features | No | No | No | Yes |
The database behind it is large. Keywords Explorer covers 28.7 billion filtered keywords from 110 billion discovered, across 217 locations, and the US alone has 2.7 billion [1]. An older help article still describes a much smaller index, so the help center has not kept up with the product. The free generator draws on over 8 billion queries and shows 150 ideas per search: the top 100 keywords and the top 50 questions. It is enough for a first content plan. Feed promising ideas back in to go narrower.
Where the volumes come from, and how far to trust them
Ahrefs blends Google Keyword Planner, Google Trends and other third-party data. It says Keyword Planner groups similar keywords and rounds volumes into buckets, and that in 2021 it found Planner "drastically overestimated search volumes 54% of the time" [2]. Ahrefs then ungroups and refines the numbers with its own models. The tool itself launched in 2016 and was rebuilt from scratch for version 3.0 in 2019, which added nine more sources of data. Most features added since then are filters, AI tools and clustering on top of the same core.
Ahrefs does not claim exact volumes. Its study found its estimates "roughly accurate for 60% of the studied keywords" against Search Console impressions, compared with 45% for Keyword Planner. That is better, not perfect. Volume is updated every few weeks and at least once a month for each keyword. Forecasts deserve even more caution. They are built from past data, and Ahrefs warns they may not match what actually happens. They help most with seasonal keywords, where the pattern repeats each year, and appear only for keywords with 200 or more monthly searches.
CPC is the weakest number on the screen. It is the estimated Google Ads bid in US dollars, and Ahrefs updates it only once in a few months. Treat it as an average. For exact bids, use Google Ads itself, which is where the current auction price for your account, location and quality score is shown. Site-level traffic follows the same logic: Ahrefs estimates it from rankings, volume and click-through rate, says it will not match Google Analytics, and recommends using it to compare sites rather than as real traffic.
Keyword Difficulty is based on the referring domains of the top 10 results only. Treat it as a first filter, and refresh grey scores before you decide.
Finding ideas: seeds and the idea reports
Enter your seeds
Enter one or more seed keywords, separated by commas or new lines, up to 10,000 at once, or upload a TXT or CSV file. On credit plans, a search of up to 10,000 keywords costs one credit. Save the seeds as a keyword list to return to later. The Overview then shows volume, Keyword Difficulty, Traffic Potential, clicks, CPC and the SERP for each keyword, with a trend line that shows past volume in blue and a forecast in orange. Seasonal keywords benefit most. Plan ahead.
Keywords Explorer also shows volume by country and global volume, so you can see which markets search a term most. Global terms, added in 2026, research keywords worldwide instead of one country at a time, and non-English keywords now show English translations. For international sites, this saves switching countries one by one.
Matching terms
Matching terms shows keywords that contain your seed. Terms match finds the words in any order, while Phrase match keeps your order, so for las vegas flights, Terms match also finds flights to las vegas. A Questions toggle shows only question keywords, which is useful for informational content.
Related terms and search suggestions
Related terms has two modes. Also rank for shows keywords the top-ranking pages also rank for, and Also talk about shows terms those pages frequently mention. The second is a quick checklist of subtopics for on-page content. Use both before writing a brief. Search suggestions shows Google autocomplete keywords for your seed. They tend to be long-tail and specific, and paired with the Questions toggle they can fill an FAQ section. They rarely carry big volume, but they often convert. Small wins add up.
Filters that find easy wins
The free generator page suggests combining filters to find keywords with high Traffic Potential and low KD. Keywords Explorer adds filters for CPC, SERP features, word count and more, a Category filter narrows ideas to a niche, and ready-made presets save common filter sets. Filtering is where a list of thousands becomes a list you can act on, so it pays to save the combinations that work.
Traffic Potential uses the current #1 page's organic traffic, and a keyword with 100 searches can have a top page earning 1,000 visits.
Keyword Difficulty: a backlink measure, not a verdict
Keyword Difficulty estimates how hard it is to reach the top 10, on a 0 to 100 scale. It is based on the referring domains of the top 10 organic results, and it ignores on-page factors [3]. The free KD checker maps scores to referring domains: KD 10 needs about 10, KD 40 about 56, KD 60 about 129 and KD 80 about 353. The scale is not linear. Treat KD as a first filter, as Ahrefs advises, not as a final answer about whether you can rank.
Grey KD scores come from SERPs not refreshed for 20 days or more. KD is recalculated whenever the SERP is refreshed, and a small graph beside each score shows how difficulty has changed over time, with an exportable history. SERPs refresh automatically, from several times a day for popular keywords to every few weeks for rare ones. Manual SERP updates start on Standard, where they are part of unlimited usage. On credit plans each update costs a credit. A refresh can change KD, Traffic Potential and SERP features, so update before you decide on a grey score.
Traffic Potential, Parent Topic and clicks
Why Traffic Potential beats volume
Traffic Potential estimates the traffic you could get by ranking first for the Parent Topic, using the current #1 page's organic traffic. A keyword with 100 searches can have a top page earning 1,000 visits, because pages rank for many keywords at once. That is why Ahrefs prefers Traffic Potential to volume. Sometimes a top page gets two or three times more traffic than the keyword's search volume. Ahrefs explains that people click several results when the first ones do not answer the question. Weak SERPs are opportunities.
Parent Topic
Parent Topic tells you whether you can rank for a keyword by targeting a broader topic. Ahrefs finds it by taking the #1 page and the query that sends it the most traffic. Keywords sharing a Parent Topic usually belong on one page, so it tells you how many pages a list really needs. Grouping by Parent Topic needs Standard or higher.
Clicks and clicks per search
Not every search ends in a click. The Clicks metric estimates how many clicks a keyword's results get, and Ahrefs' own example is telling: seo had 125,000 searches but 59,000 clicks. Clicks per search shows how many results people open, and a keyword whose traffic exceeds its volume usually has high clicks per search. That makes clicks per search a better signal of real traffic potential than volume alone.
Keywords sharing a Parent Topic usually belong on one page. Clustering turns a long list into page ideas, on Standard or higher.
Reading the SERP before you commit
The SERP overview shows the top results with backlinks, traffic and traffic value. Keywords Explorer adds SERP history to judge volatility, the full ads history of a keyword, and side-by-side SERP comparisons. A SERP that has not changed in years is hard to break into. A volatile one is an opening. Check SERP features too. Rank Tracker and Keywords Explorer track features such as AI Overviews, featured snippets and People Also Ask, and a keyword dominated by an AI Overview or a knowledge panel may send few clicks even at high volume. Look at that column before promising traffic.
Intent, branded and local
Keywords Explorer tags keywords as informational, navigational, commercial or transactional, plus branded and local. Intent is inferred from what Google shows, so some keywords carry two, and AI Identify intent analyzes the top 10 for one keyword at a time. Both need SERP data, which many rare keywords lack. Branded keywords name a specific company, while local ones look for nearby services. Excluding branded competitor terms keeps a list focused on topics you can actually rank for.
Share of Voice and competitor keywords
Keyword research also starts from competitors. Site Explorer's Organic keywords report shows what any site ranks for, and Content Gap shows keywords competitors rank for and you do not. Keywords Explorer can also track organic Share of Voice, meaning which domains and pages capture the most search traffic for your target keywords, and traffic share reports now include related keywords alongside seed terms. That shows the niche terms competitors rank for quietly. Feed the best of them back into Keywords Explorer.
Turning a long list into a content plan
Ahrefs' best-practice article boils keyword research down to three steps: generate ideas, pick the ones with the most potential, then group them by parent topic, intent and business value. Grouping by business value is the step most teams skip. A keyword that will never lead to a sale or a link rarely deserves its own page.
Keyword clusters group ideas by Parent Topic or by terms, instantly, and they start on Standard [4]. A list of 2,000 keywords can collapse into a few hundred page ideas, each with a main keyword and a set of secondary ones. That is usually the most useful single step in a content plan. AI Suggestions generates keyword ideas from a topic, and AI Translations shows metrics for up to 10,000 keywords in another language. Both also need Standard or higher.
The Growth metric shows volume growth over 3, 6 or 12 months, and the help center says it is available only on the Advanced plan and higher. The same article says pulling that data by API requires Enterprise, which is out of date since API v3 reached Lite, so trust the pricing page over old help articles. For a new trend, use Growth or Google Trends rather than a forecast. Keyword lists now show historical total volume across all their keywords, to track seasonality across a niche, and exports include historical and forecast volume trends.
Ahrefs updates CPC only once in a few months, so treat it as an average and check exact bids in Google Ads.
What each plan allows, and what credits cost
Keyword lists save your research. Starter allows 5 lists of up to 100 keywords each, and Lite allows 50 lists of up to 10,000. Standard allows 100, Advanced 200 and Enterprise 500. Large content plans therefore need Lite at least. Name lists by page or topic, not by date, so anyone on the team can later open the list for a page and compare it with that page's current rankings.
On credit plans, opening Keywords Explorer, filtering and updating SERPs all cost credits, and fetching advanced metrics for bulk keywords costs one credit per keyword. Starter has 200 credits a month. Plan research sessions rather than browsing. If keyword research is daily work, the gating points toward Standard: clusters, intent tags, AI suggestions and manual SERP updates all start there. Our Ahrefs pricing guide sets out every plan.
Beyond Google, and through MCP
The free Keyword Generator covers Google, Bing, YouTube and Amazon, and Keywords Explorer covers eight search engines beyond Google. Ahrefs says its Amazon keyword data comes from clickstream behavior of real Amazon users, with nearly 100 million keywords in the US Amazon database, and its YouTube data covers 170 countries. Both dedicated tools showed a maintenance notice when we checked, so the Keyword Generator covers both engines meanwhile.
With the MCP server, an AI assistant can run keyword research across several Keywords Explorer reports from one request, such as asking for blog ideas people search before buying a product. Each call costs at least 50 API units. It is a fast way to draft a list. Check the numbers in Keywords Explorer itself. Backlinks matter here too, since KD is a link measure; our guide to the Ahrefs backlink checker explains that side.
A keyword workflow that fits on a card
Put together, the steps above make a short routine you can repeat for every new topic. It uses only the reports and metrics covered in this guide:
- Start from five seeds.
- Pull Matching terms with KD under 30.
- Cluster by Parent Topic.
- Check Traffic Potential and intent.
- Save the best clusters as lists.
- Brief one page per cluster.

The bottom line
Ahrefs' keyword tools are strong because they lean on its link and traffic data: KD comes from backlinks, and Traffic Potential from real ranking pages. Their volumes are estimates, more accurate than Keyword Planner by Ahrefs' own test, but still estimates. Start with the free generator for a first plan. Use Standard if keyword research is daily work, because clusters, AI suggestions and manual SERP updates all start there, and those are the features that turn a long keyword export into a content plan a team can use.
