What Rank Tracker does, and the weekly catch
Ahrefs' Rank Tracker monitors where your pages rank in Google for the keywords, locations and devices you choose. It is solid and detailed, and it sits inside the same project as Site Audit, so your rankings and your crawl live side by side. The short version of using it is simple. Add keywords and locations to a project, add competitors, then read Visibility, Share of Voice and position distribution. This guide covers the setup, the metrics and the limits, based on Ahrefs' pages and help center as of 12 October 2026.
The one thing to understand before anything else is the update rhythm. Rankings update weekly by default on every plan [1], and the help center comparison table lists Rank Tracker updates as every 7 days. Daily updates need the separate Rank Tracker Pro add-on [2]. Ahrefs' own blog muddies this by saying frequency depends on your plan and runs anywhere between one and seven days, but the pricing page shows weekly for all. Trust the pricing page.
Why weekly matters
When Ahrefs rebuilt the tool from scratch in 2017, the launch post opened by saying most SEOs start their day reviewing ranking changes from the past 24 hours. Weekly data cannot show that. For client reporting, weekly is usually enough, and four data points a month is plenty for a trend. For spotting a ranking drop after a site change, it is slow. Decide which job you need before buying. If it is daily alerting, read the cost section below first.
New keywords can import ranking history from Site Explorer, so they show years of past positions straight away instead of starting the day you add them.
How your keyword allowance is counted
Rank Tracker's limits are counted in tracked keywords, and the definition is stricter than it sounds: "Each tracked keyword consists of 1 keyword, for 1 location, in 1 project." [3] Three keywords in two locations use six. The same keyword in two projects uses two. A single project can hold up to 10,000 keywords. Competitor limits sit beside the keyword limits:
| Starter | Lite | Standard | Advanced | Enterprise | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tracked keywords | 50 | 750 | 2,000 | 5,000 | From 10,000 |
| Update frequency | Weekly | Weekly | Weekly | Weekly | Weekly |
| Competitors per project | 10 | 20 | 20 | 20 | 100 |
Plan locations before adding keywords. A local business tracking 100 service keywords in five ZIP codes on Lite already uses 500 of its 750 tracked keywords before adding a single competitor term or a second website. Starter's 50 keywords cover one small site's core terms and little else, and Starter cannot buy extra users. For a freelancer tracking one client, it is a cheap way in. For an agency, it is not a rank tracker at all.
When you run out
Extra tracked keywords can be bought in batches of 500, pay-as-you-go or prepaid. Keywords beyond the plan limit are frozen and stop updating, so a list that grows past the cap simply stops reporting on part of itself. Turn pay-as-you-go off for Rank Tracker if you do not want surprise charges. One thing you never pay for here is report credits: Rank Tracker does not use them. Deleted projects also return their keyword allowance to the pool. Our Ahrefs pricing guide covers the plans themselves.
One keyword in one location in one project is one tracked keyword, so three keywords in two locations use six.
Setting up a project you will not have to redo
Create the project and add keywords
Rank Tracker lives inside a project, and deleting a project deletes its tracked keywords and alerts too. Name projects by site, not by campaign. Projects cannot be duplicated or merged later, and a campaign that ends leaves behind a project whose history you either keep paying keyword allowance for or lose when you delete it. Copying keywords to a new project starts their history from the upload date.
To add keywords, paste them, upload a TXT or CSV file, or add them from the keywords your site already ranks for. You can upload keywords with tags, and since early 2026 a CSV can be uploaded to several projects at once. The count of keywords about to be used shows beside the Add button. Check it before you click.
Choose locations as if you cannot change them
Choose a country, then a state, city or ZIP code. Rankings in Idaho differ from rankings in Singapore, and the top URLs can be entirely different, across 190+ locations in all. If unsure, start with the country plus the city where the business is. Then take care, because there is no way to edit a keyword's location. You delete the keyword and add it again, and Ahrefs is blunt about the price: "In this case, all historic ranking data for the keyword will be lost." [4] Getting locations right at the start saves months of history. Check them twice.
A keyword's location cannot be edited. You delete the keyword and add it again, and all its historic ranking data is lost.
Competitors and imported history
Add competitors manually or from suggestions based on shared keywords. Starter allows 10 per project; Lite, Standard and Advanced allow 20; Enterprise allows 100. The limit rose in June 2026, though the Rank Tracker API still returned 10 competitors at the time. Back in 2018 the tool could compare a site with only five.
New keywords can also import ranking history from Site Explorer, so they show years of past positions straight away. That is unusual among rank trackers. Without it, history starts the day you add a keyword, and preset date ranges stay grey for the first seven days of a project. Use the import for every new project. A client who sees two years of ranking history on day one understands the starting point far better than one who must wait weeks for a trend line.
Rank Tracker shows aggregated progress by tag, which suits client reports. Retro-tagging thousands of keywords is slow.
Reading the numbers
What each keyword shows
For each tracked keyword, Rank Tracker shows its position, search volume, search traffic, Keyword Difficulty, SERP features, ranking URL and the date last checked, and a Metrics tab adds the advanced Keywords Explorer metrics. Mobile rankings are available on all plans: switch to the Mobile view in any report, including Competitors. Mobile SERPs often differ from desktop, and for local businesses mobile is usually the number that matters. Average position and traffic charts show progress over time, but they jump whenever you add or remove keywords, so Ahrefs marks list edits with flags on every chart. Chart notes let you mark your own SEO actions, such as a site migration. Annotate every change.
Visibility, Share of Voice and traffic value
Visibility is the share of all possible clicks from your tracked keywords that land on your site. Holding every top 10 spot for one keyword would be 100%, while holding only #1 might be about 30%, because Ahrefs models a CTR curve for almost every keyword. Like the charts, Visibility moves when you add or remove keywords, so check the change flags.
Share of Voice is your clicks divided by all clicks in the SERPs of your tracked keywords. In Ahrefs' example, a coffee site ranking fourth for a keyword with 5,000 clicks gets 450 clicks, or 9%. It also shows which pages and sites take the most clicks across your keywords, and those may not be the rivals you expected. Share of Traffic Value goes one step further and weights clicks by what they would cost as ads. A site can hold a small share of clicks but a large share of value if it wins the commercial keywords. Report both.
Position distribution and history
Rank Tracker groups keywords into positions 1 to 3, 4 to 10, 11 to 20, 21 to 50 and 51 to 100. Moving keywords from 11 to 20 into the top 10 is usually the fastest traffic gain. Positions below the top 10 are volatile, though: Ahrefs' research shows they can move by five places each update. Position history charts show ranking stability and seasonal patterns for each keyword. A keyword that swings between positions 3 and 9 every week is volatile; one stuck at 11 for months needs work, not patience. Read the chart before reacting to a single drop.
Watching the SERP, not just your rank
Rank Tracker tracks 19 SERP features, including AI Overviews, featured snippets, local packs and People Also Ask, up from 12 feature types in the 2017 version. It shows which features you own, which you could win and which take clicks away from organic results. A keyword can hold position 1 and still lose clicks to an AI answer above it, so track the AI Overview column next to traffic. One oddity is worth knowing. The Rank Tracker page says its SERP history chart shows daily movements of SERP features, while the same page lists the update frequency as weekly. That history likely comes from Ahrefs' keyword database rather than your project. Rely on the weekly figure for your own rankings.
Competitors, newcomers and cannibalization
Rank Tracker can track newcomers and fast climbers in your SERPs, so you see domains gaining on you before they pass you, and it can track all the keywords that drive traffic to competitors' best pages. Competitor alerts arrive weekly or monthly. From any tracked keyword, you can open the SERP to see every ranking page with DR, UR, backlinks, referring domains and traffic, and click the backlink count to open that page's backlinks in Site Explorer. That turns a ranking report into a link-building to-do list.
On your own side, set a target URL for each keyword to get warned when another page outranks it. Target URLs can be assigned in bulk since January 2026. Rank Tracker also flags keywords where several of your URLs rank at once. That is a sign of cannibalization.
Why the numbers will not match Google, or Site Explorer
Your own Google search will not match Rank Tracker exactly. Ahrefs lists volatility, time lag and personalization by location and history, and it cannot search from your IP network. Discrepancies should be small in the top five and larger lower down. Do not chase single-position differences. They are noise.
Rank Tracker also differs from Site Explorer's Organic keywords report. Rank Tracker tracks only keywords you add, weekly, down to ZIP code, on desktop and mobile. Organic keywords fills itself from Ahrefs' database, updates from daily to every few months by popularity, works at country level and shows desktop only. Use both: one for your list, one for discovery. Ahrefs likewise measures visibility two ways, Impressions in Site Explorer and Share of Voice in Rank Tracker, and a site can be visible without getting clicks.
Connecting Google Search Console fills the remaining gap, showing clicks, impressions and CTR by position inside Rank Tracker. Search Console has real clicks; Rank Tracker has positions. Together they explain traffic changes. The GSC Keywords report also gained a Rank Tracker status filter in 2026, which shows which Search Console keywords you already track. Add the missing ones each month, starting with keywords that already bring clicks from positions 5 to 15, where a small gain in rank usually pays off most.
Reporting to clients and teams
Tags group keywords by topic, page or campaign, and Rank Tracker shows aggregated progress by tag, which suits client and management reports. Tag keywords as you add them, because retro-tagging thousands is slow. Tags can now be managed through the API too. For delivery, Rank Tracker can email reports weekly or monthly. For custom reports, use Report Builder or Looker Studio, which needs Advanced or higher. Report Builder sends scheduled PDFs to people without an Ahrefs login and includes a local rankings report across regions. Pick one reporting route and stick with it.
Two gaps affect agencies. Rank Tracker data is not supported in Portfolios, though Site Explorer's organic keyword data and GSC Insights are. For a combined view of several client sites, use Portfolios with Search Console data and keep Rank Tracker per project. The API has Rank Tracker overview and competitors endpoints, with tag endpoints and a competitor domains endpoint added in June 2026. Through MCP, an assistant can summarize ranking changes on request, and each call uses API units from your plan.
Rank Tracker for a local business
ZIP-level tracking on mobile is the setup most local businesses need. Track the city and two or three nearby ZIP codes for the main service keywords, and remember the allowance math above before you multiply them. Because Rank Tracker covers local packs as a SERP feature, you can see whether the map listing or the website is the one ranking. GBP Monitor handles the listing itself. Check the mobile view first. For local searches, it is usually the number that matters, and Report Builder's local rankings report then shows how the main keywords rank across regions.
Weekly versus daily: the real cost
Lite's 750 keywords cost about 17 cents each a month, updated weekly. SE Ranking's Core tracks 2,000 keywords daily at the same US$129. Ahrefs' daily add-on price is not on the pricing page [2]. If daily tracking is the main job, compare before committing. The gap between 750 weekly keywords and 2,000 daily keywords at the same price is the largest single difference between the two tools' entry plans. Our Ahrefs vs SE Ranking comparison covers the rest of that matchup.
A monthly ranking review
Weekly data fits a monthly rhythm well. A simple four-week cycle covers everything above without daily checking:
- Week one: check position distribution and move keywords from 11 to 20 into a priority list.
- Week two: review SERP features you could win.
- Week three: check cannibalization flags.
- Week four: send the tagged summary to clients.

The bottom line
Ahrefs' Rank Tracker is detailed, well integrated with Site Explorer and easy to report from. Its one real limit is weekly updates on every plan. If weekly suits your reporting, it is excellent: count keyword-location pairs carefully, set locations once, import history and tag as you go. If you need daily movement, price Rank Tracker Pro or a dedicated tracker first.
