Yes, a small business can run real work on Base44, as long as that work is a website, a form-fed list or a staff dashboard rather than a full operations system. Base44 is an AI app builder operated by Wix.com Ltd.: you describe the tool in plain language and it builds the pages, database, logins and hosting. A public site can go live on the Free plan. Your own domain starts on Starter at $16 per month billed annually or $20 per month billed monthly, per workspace, and card payments start on Builder at $40 per month billed annually or $50 per month billed monthly.[1] Booking diaries, tills and gym-style membership management, with check-in and contracts, stay elsewhere.
What a shop, studio or trades firm can put on it
Base44's own guide lists client portals, dashboards, CRM apps and booking systems as custom business apps you can build on it, and concedes that a traditional website builder may be faster for a site that is pure marketing. Its ready-made business-site templates are narrower, as the last sections show. Each tool is its own app inside one workspace. From Starter up there is an unlimited number of apps, so a public site, a quote tracker and a customer portal can sit side by side, while Free stops at five apps.
The daily pattern is simple: a form writes to a database the owner works from. Contact, quote and booking forms on Base44's business-site template save every submission as a record, and Base44 can email the details. Rows can be edited, filtered and downloaded as a CSV file from the dashboard, and Base44 says the same site can grow a dashboard for leads, clients and jobs with team logins. Reading and writing those records costs no credits. That matters.
The bill comes from credits instead. Message credits pay for asking the AI to build or change something, at roughly 0.5 to 4 per change by Base44's estimates, and credits spent on failed or unsatisfactory AI output are not refunded. Integration credits pay for email, AI calls, images and uploads that your customers and staff trigger from the owner's pool. Both expire at each monthly reset with no top-ups, as our Base44 pricing guide explains. An app email costs about 1 integration credit from Base44's default sender and about 2 from your own email domain, so Starter's 2,000 a month cover roughly 1,000 to 2,000 sends if nothing else draws on them, by our arithmetic.
Build and publish the site on a base44.app address first; move to Starter when you connect your own domain or need a private staff app.
Getting the public site onto your own name
The site itself is the cheapest part. On Free, a site publishes to a base44.app address with hosting and SSL and no card required, but it carries the Edit with Base44 badge. Starter connects a domain, hides the badge and allows private apps. Buy the domain inside Base44 and the DNS setup is done for you; connect one you own and Base44 verifies it and renews SSL automatically. A free domain for one year comes with yearly Starter (bought from October 2026), Builder, Pro and Elite, claimed within 60 days. Monthly plans do not include it.
Search is where the domain matters most. Base44's help center says its SEO setup is designed for custom domains and that search engines treat base44.app addresses as staging sites, so the sitemap, robots.txt and optional llms.txt file pay off only on your own name. A built-in SEO and GEO scan returns a score and a fix list without spending credits. Base44 does not create, manage or verify your Google Business Profile, so that listing stays your job.[2] Base44 also does not run A/B tests.
The analytics dashboard shows visits, unique visitors, referrers and pages read with nothing to install; Free shows the last 7 days, Starter adds 30-day, 90-day and custom ranges. Visitor tracking is on by default, and consent compliance is left to the owner. A workspace owner on Starter or higher with a verified custom domain can also buy a Google Workspace business email. It bills as a separate subscription and keeps renewing even if the Base44 plan is canceled.
Staff dashboards, roles and who sees what
Base44 bills per workspace, not per seat. Everyone you invite shares the owner's plan and credit pool and needs no paid plan of their own, and Viewers, who cannot edit apps or use the AI chat, consume no credits. The bill stays flat as staff join. The catch is control. Per-member credit limits and the workspace Admin role belong to Base44's Enterprise offering, which its help center splits into a self-serve Business plan and a sales-led Enterprise plan; neither price is published.
Inside a live app, a separate pair of default roles, Admin and User, decide what people can do on every plan, and you can add more. A staff-only tool should be set to Private, which admits invited people only and starts on Starter, or to Workspace visibility. Base44's help center says no setting limits sign-up to one company email domain. Invitations are the gate. You can upload them 50 at a time from a CSV or text file, and only collaborators and the owner can open the app editor.
Dashboards that pull from other systems need Builder. Connectors such as HubSpot, Slack, QuickBooks and Zoho CRM start there, as do workflows that automate approvals, alerts and recurring tasks, running at most once every 5 minutes. A workflow already running is canceled when the app runs out of integration credits. Size the allowance first. Our Base44 integrations guide explains the three connection levels.
Each app email costs about 1 integration credit from Base44's default sender, or about 2 from your own email domain, taken from the owner's monthly pool, so compare your expected sends with Starter's 2,000 or Builder's 10,000 integration credits a month.
Charging customers from the same app
Payments are a Builder feature. Base44 Payments, powered by Wix, and Stripe both handle one-time and recurring charges on Builder or higher, so a prepaid package and a monthly membership charge both work. Base44 Payments needs a published app plus a registered business and bank account in a supported country, a list that includes the US, the UK, Canada and several euro countries; payouts start only after business verification. Base44's product pages put Base44 Payments at 2.9% + $0.30 per sale for most US card, Apple Pay and Google Pay payments, with American Express and other countries priced differently.[3]
On a $100 sale that is $3.20 in fees, by our arithmetic. Stripe is the other built-in route on Builder or higher: checkout arrives in test mode, and going live means connecting or creating your own Stripe account, with products managed in the Stripe Dashboard. Since November 2026 the SDK payments module can also take PayPal from backend functions on Builder or higher. Shipping and tax are rules you set, not live carrier quotes, and the owner registers for and files taxes.
Base44 says the booking form on its business-site templates has no capacity count, automatic waitlist or card capture at booking: requests land in a list and the owner confirms each slot.
The jobs that still need other software
Base44's own business pages are candid about the edges of its site templates. A booking feature is a request form writing to the database, not a live booking engine: no capacity that counts down, no automatic waitlist and no card payment at booking, so the owner confirms each slot.[4] Restaurants get an inquiry form instead of live table availability, and the site is not a POS, kitchen display or delivery-dispatch system. For trades, Base44 says its roofing site is not a CRM, job-scheduling, crew-dispatch or estimating tool; a CRM-style app is something you build yourself, with connectors and workflows on Builder or higher.
Marketing follow-up is thin too. Base44 says no automated email sequence waits after a signup, and emailing people who have not signed up to the app needs a paid plan and a verified domain and stops at 20 new people a day. Health practices should note that Base44 says it cannot meet HIPAA requirements or sign a BAA. Law firms should note that Base44 says an intake form is not a confidential channel, and that no builder can guarantee ADA or WCAG conformance. On every plan except Enterprise, Base44 can use workspace data to train AI models with no opt-out setting, which our Base44 review weighs alongside its security claims.
Starter or Builder for a small team
| What the business needs | Lowest Base44 plan |
|---|---|
| Site live on a base44.app address | Free |
| Own domain, no badge, private staff apps | Starter |
| 30- and 90-day analytics, business email add-on | Starter |
| Card payments, workflows, connectors | Builder |
| Code export to GitHub or a ZIP file | Builder |
| Per-member credit limits, workspace Admin role | Enterprise offering (Business or Enterprise) |
| SSO | Enterprise offering (Business or Enterprise), or Elite for workspaces created before October 2026 |
A branded site with a private job tracker fits Starter: $16 per month billed annually, charged once as $192 a year by our arithmetic, or $20 per month billed monthly. Payments or connectors push you to Builder at $40 per month billed annually or $50 per month billed monthly, which by our arithmetic adds $288 a year on annual billing or $360 on monthly billing. By our arithmetic, nine months of Starter billed monthly come to $180, below the $192 annual charge, while ten come to $200, so monthly wins only if you stop within nine months.
Plans are non-refundable under Base44's Terms; its help center says Customer Care may approve a prorated refund, minus processing fees, for a mistaken purchase or special circumstances. A yearly plan cannot be switched to monthly, so start an untested idea monthly. Google Ads campaigns launched from the dashboard bill separately, plus a 15% Base44 service fee. Builder's GitHub and ZIP export hands over the code, but that code still calls Base44's backend through its SDK, which Base44 does not let you self-host. Plan the exit early.
Frequently asked questions
Can I bring my existing customer spreadsheet into Base44?+
Yes. Base44 imports CSV, Excel or JSON files into an app's data table; an import adds rows and does not update existing ones.
Can my staff use a Base44 app on their phones?+
Yes, in a mobile browser or added to the home screen, because Base44 apps are responsive web apps. App Store and Google Play files need the Builder plan or higher plus your own Apple and Google developer accounts.
What happens to my business site if I cancel?+
You keep access until the billing period ends; then the workspace moves to Free, where up to 5 apps stay published (with more than 5 you choose which; the rest are unpublished, not deleted), custom domains stop working, payments stop and your data stays in the workspace.
Can I move a Shopify store into Base44?+
Base44 says its Shopify import brings products, orders, customers and collections, plus pages, blog posts, discounts and theme code, and keeps the storefront URL. Taking payments afterwards still needs the Builder plan or higher.
The bottom line
Base44 suits a small business that wants its website, lead list and a few staff dashboards in one workspace, billed per workspace rather than per person. Starter covers a branded site and private internal tools; Builder is the real starting point once you take card payments, automate approvals or pull data from other systems. Keep the booking diary, the till, gym-style membership management and email marketing on software built for them, and budget integration credits for every email and AI call your customers trigger.
