Learning Bubble (bubble.io) costs nothing until launch day. Start with the free Complete Quickstart course in Bubble Academy, which runs from the visual editor to Bubble AI, then build a first project on Bubble's Free plan at $0 per app. That plan covers building and previewing with 50K workload units and 500 AI credits a month, but it has no live version. Deploying a public web app needs Bubble's Starter plan (Web) at $32 per month billed annually or $39 per month billed monthly, per app [1]. The order that pays off is data types, then privacy rules, then workflows, then pages. Bubble's FAQ says (as read in November 2026) a newcomer can have a working app within a couple of days and be fluent in a few weeks. Expect a learning curve.

Day one: an account, a project type and a name that sticks

A single Bubble account can hold as many apps as you like, and each one starts on its own bubbleapps.io address. When you create a project, you pick what it will become: a web app, a native mobile app or both. Either can come first and the other can be added later, because web and mobile in one project share the database and backend workflows. Creation also sets up an index page, a 404 page and two separate databases, one for Development and one for Live [2].

Choose the name with care. It cannot be changed afterwards, and nobody can reuse it, even after the project is deleted. Until you connect a custom domain, that name sits in the default URL for everyone to see. Deleting a project is final; the Bubble team cannot recover it. If a marketplace template is your starting point, add it to your account first and then select it at creation. Each project carries its own plan, so a practice app can stay on Bubble's Free plan while a serious one moves on.

Preview as a test user

Since October 2026 the in-editor preview tab can run the app as any user in the test database, the quickest way to check what each role sees.

Let Bubble AI sketch the app, then learn the tabs

Beginners now face a choice on the first screen: draw the app by hand or describe it. App generation takes a prompt of up to 2,500 characters, asks clarifying questions, shows a blueprint with features and user stories, and then builds pages, a database with sample data, workflows, privacy rules and sign-up and login flows. Bubble put the build time at 10 to 15 minutes in September 2026, longer for complex prompts. Generation currently spends no AI credits, per the pricing FAQ. Later edits through the AI Agent do spend them, out of the 500 included each month on the Free plan.

Treat the generated app as a study guide, not a finished product. Everything the Agent builds stays visual, so you can open each workflow in the Workflow or Backend workflows tab and read how it works. The Design tab holds pages and the element tree; the Data tab holds data types and option sets; the Settings tab holds the plan, the domain and the API switches; the Logs tab shows server logs and workload. The backend workflow editor appears in the Pages dropdown once the Workflow API is enabled. Keep one browser tab per app, since Bubble warns that several can misbehave.

Data first: types, fields and privacy rules

Bubble's beginner material starts with data, and so should you. Every new app has a built-in User type with an email field and authentication. It cannot be renamed, so a Player or an Author stays a User underneath. Each type you add gets automatic fields for its creator, created and modified dates, a slug and a unique ID. Fields can be text, numbers, dates, yes/no, files, images, addresses or another data type, and any field can hold a list, which is how one record points at many others without a join table.

Static choices such as countries or statuses belong in option sets rather than data types. They load quickly with the page, but they are not encrypted and anyone can read them in the browser. Custom states, the temporary values that pass information between elements, reset on reload and are just as visible. Neither may hold secrets. On the Free plan the database stops at 200 things and 0.5GB of file storage, which is plenty for practice records but not for imported real data.

Privacy rules are the lesson beginners skip. They are server-side conditions set per data type and down to single fields, and without them every piece of data sent to a device can be read. Hiding an element is not security. Bubble AI writes privacy rules for the types it generates, and Bubble advises reviewing them before launch. In November 2026 Bubble gave every builder the same advice, along with running the security dashboard (Bubble's Starter plan and up) and marking API keys private. Our database and workflows guide goes deeper.

Workflows: one event, a chain of actions and the workload meter

A Bubble workflow is one event followed by actions. Each workflow has exactly one event, and actions that several events should share go into a custom event. Frontend workflows run only while the page is open. Backend workflows run on the server: scheduled, recurring, triggered through the API or fired by a database trigger. In the plan matrix, scheduled and recurring workflows are marked Limited on the Free plan, so practice them knowing the full versions start with Bubble's Starter plan.

Two habits save hours of confusion. First, steps do not always wait for the one before them, so a search may miss a thing created a moment earlier; refer to the Result of step X instead. Second, learn which work is metered. Searches, data writes, emails, sign-ups and API calls run on Bubble's server and consume workload units, while showing or hiding elements, setting custom states and reading option sets run on the device and add none. The manual's starting figures are 0.15 WU for a page load and 0.5 WU for each thing written.

Past a paid plan's monthly allowance, overages are billed at $0.30 per 1K WU unless you switch them off, which takes the app offline at the limit until you re-enable overages, buy a workload tier or the next billing period starts; our pricing breakdown covers tiers and alerts. Learn it early. A recursive workflow without a stop condition can drain a whole month of workload, which is why apps created from July 2024 stop such chains after 10 iterations unless you change the setting.

Open the Logs tab early

App metrics in the Logs tab show which pages, workflows and expressions use workload units, so wasteful habits surface while the app is still small.

Preview freely, deploy on a paid plan

The Preview button runs the Development version, which has its own independent database [3]. Since October 2026 the preview also sits inside the editor as its own tab, with the Agent pinned beside it. Safe preview modes can switch off community plugins or custom HTML when something breaks, while Bubble-built plugins stay on. The debugger steps through workflows, though only on desktop. For a mobile project, the Simulated device streams the app into the browser, and it works on the Free plan.

Live is the paywall. The issue checker must be clear first, because Bubble refuses to deploy while it shows issues. The Free plan has no live version and no custom domain, so the first public launch needs at least Bubble's Starter plan on the right tab. A project with web and native mobile apps together starts at Bubble's Starter plan (Web & Mobile), $59 per month billed annually or $69 per month billed monthly, per project. Publishing also needs your own Apple Developer Program account ($99 a year) and Google Play Console account ($25 one-time), paid to Apple and Google. Native mobile is still labeled beta.

New apps can try Starter for 14 days if the trial begins within 10 days of creating the app. It places a $1 card hold and converts to the paid plan unless canceled, and Bubble does not refund plan charges after that. An annual plan commits you for the year. A custom domain needs DNS records pointing at Bubble, and HTTPS can take 24 to 36 hours to appear once they are in place. Everything the free tier allows is mapped in is Bubble free.

⚠️
Watch out
Deploy moves structure, not data

Records typed into Development do not travel to Live when you deploy; Live keeps its own separate database unless you copy data across.

Courses, walkthroughs and the certificate

Bubble Academy is free on every plan. Its Bubble-made courses include the Complete Quickstart, a Mobile Quickstart, Security Fundamentals and Property Editor 101. Bubble also published a free hour-long onboarding video course, relaunched in October 2022, covering design, responsive controls, data types, privacy rules, workflows, repeating groups, versioning and the issue checker. Start there. The Academy page also lists outside resources, some free and some paid, such as NoCode Alliance, NoCodeTrainer and Platzi.

For learning by copying, the How to Build series lists 67 step-by-step walkthroughs (as read in November 2026), from an Instagram clone and a marketplace to a ChatGPT clone on Azure OpenAI and a Discord clone. The forum is where Bubble posts major news, and Bubble itself suggests asking there whether a project is feasible before building an MVP. Live group bootcamps come from third parties such as Momentum Academy, Kreante, Airdev and Platzi, in English, French, Polish, Spanish and Portuguese.

Personal help is narrower. Team plans and above can book a one-on-one demo with Bubble; others are pointed to community coaches, and Bubble is not accepting new coach applications. The Bubble Developer Certification is the formal checkpoint: $45 for two attempts within three months, 90 randomized questions, a 3.5-hour limit and 80% to pass [4]. It is open-book but proctored by webcam, English only and valid for two years. Sit it after you ship.

Frequently asked questions

Can I learn native mobile building on Bubble's Free plan?+

Yes for building and testing: the Simulated device runs the mobile app in the browser on Bubble's Free plan. Dev builds on a real phone, TestFlight or Google Play testing and store releases need a paid Mobile or Web & Mobile plan plus your own Apple Developer Program account ($99 a year) or Google Play Console account ($25 one-time), paid to Apple and Google, and Bubble labels its native mobile builder beta.

What does the Bubble certification exam leave out?+

It does not cover plugins other than the API Connector, templates or the Plugin Editor. The exam is offline for maintenance every Monday between 12 and 5 PM ET.

Is there a student discount for people learning Bubble?+

Bubble offers student discounts on all plans on request, with no amount published, and educational institutions can ask for group discounts. The Academy courses are free on every plan regardless.

Can I keep building if my AI credits run out?+

Yes. The visual editor keeps working without AI credits; included credits refresh on the 1st of the month. A new app can instead start the 14-day Starter trial within 10 days of creating the app, and extra credit packs (one-time, expiring six months after purchase) need Bubble's Starter plan or higher.

The bottom line

Bubble rewards learners who build in order: data model, privacy rules, workflows, then pages, with Bubble AI as a fast first draft you take apart rather than trust. Building and previewing cost nothing, while a live launch is where the first paid plan comes in. Bubble's own estimate is a few weeks to fluency. Use the Academy and the How to Build walkthroughs as the syllabus, and remember the app never leaves Bubble as code, as our Bubble review explains, so the skills you build stay tied to the platform.
