Three routes in, and no student discount
Semrush education comes in three forms: the free courses and certificates of Semrush Academy, the Semrush for Education program for universities, and the free plan that any student can open. None of them is a discounted student subscription. Semrush says plainly that it does not offer individual subscription plans for students [1], and there is no published student discount. This guide explains what each route includes, who qualifies and where the fine print sits. It is built on Semrush Academy's pages and Semrush's help center, read from the US on October 12, 2026.
The short version depends on who you are. Students and career changers should take the free Academy courses and practice on the free plan. Professors at accredited colleges in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand or Europe can apply for three months of free classroom access. A student outside such a class still has a workable route. The free courses teach the tools, the free plan gives ten reports a day for practice, and a seven-day trial can be saved for the week before a job interview.
Take a toolkit crash course before starting a trial, so the seven days go on practice rather than lessons.
Semrush Academy costs nothing, certificates included
Semrush says all Academy courses are free of charge, certificates included [2]. Its AI course page repeats the point: there is no cost to access course content or earn a certificate. The only requirement is a Semrush account, which is free to create and needs no card. To enroll, you pick a course, click Start learning, and log in or sign up. Semrush says enrolling takes under two minutes and that progress is saved automatically, so you can stop and pick up where you left off. Lessons mix walkthroughs of Semrush itself with downloadable resources.
The catalog is broader than the brand name suggests. The Academy groups its courses by SEO, Semrush tools, content marketing, analytics, ecommerce, sales, PR, paid advertising, social media, career, AI, business and local SEO, and Semrush says new courses are added monthly. Webinars sit alongside the courses. They are free, and the recordings stay available afterwards. Recent sessions built a keyword strategy and a content brief live with Claude and Semrush data, set up SEO for sites built with Lovable, and analyzed six months of ChatGPT data across 1,094 topics to see which brands lead their categories. They run about an hour. They are product-led, but practical.
Who teaches the courses
Courses are taught by Semrush staff and outside experts, and the mix keeps the catalog from reading like a product manual. Brian Dean, founder of Backlinko, is the best-known name. The Academy says Backlinko has more than 5 million readers, and Dean teaches five courses, including an SEO crash course for newcomers, a content-led SEO course, an advanced content course on growing a blog fast and a digital PR course built on the strategies he says earned him coverage in Forbes, Inc and Fast Company. Rita Cidre, Head of Academy, appears across several courses.
The rest of the bench is practitioners. Andy Crestodina of Orbit Media teaches two courses, including the Complete Agency Playbook. Wes McDowell co-teaches Local SEO Essentials. Chima Mmeje, a content strategist who builds topic clusters for SaaS companies, teaches one course, and Janet Machuka, a social marketing strategist who has trained more than 70 brands, teaches another. Olivia Mae Hanlon, founder of Girls in Marketing, teaches the career course. Christina Garnett covers social listening, and Jack Appleby runs a brand voice workshop. Variety helps here.
A learning path through the catalog
Start with the platform and SEO basics
The course descriptions suggest an order, and following it saves time. Getting Started with Semrush is the entry course for in-house marketers and solo business owners new to the platform. It has 21 lessons over about an hour, needs no prior experience, and covers setting up the account, tracking rankings, auditing a site and reporting. An agency version has 19 lessons. Crash courses then cover individual toolkits, including SEO, Local, AI Visibility and Traffic & Market. These are the fastest way to learn the interface before a trial, and the course to finish before opening one. From there, the SEO track climbs in steps:
- SEO Essentials with Semrush is the free beginner course: keyword research, technical SEO, content, backlinks and an introduction to AI visibility.
- Keyword Research Essentials is for those who have mastered the basics, and adds AI prompt research.
- On-Page SEO and AI Search Essentials is for those who have finished keyword research.
- Technical SEO and AI Search Essentials and Off-Page SEO and AI Search Essentials follow. The technical course is aimed at non-technical marketers who need to work with developers, without writing code; the off-page course teaches backlink analysis and link building.
Then pick a specialty
Content marketers have a short curriculum of their own. Content Marketing Essentials for SEO and AI Search targets writers who want both rankings and AI citations, the Content Toolkit crash course walks through Semrush's content tools, and the brand voice workshop helps teams build a voice with personality. Technical specialists can add The Craft[p1] of Mobile SEO and an International SEO course for sites entering new countries and languages. On the PR side, the AI PR Toolkit crash course shows Semrush's own outreach tools.
Store owners get two short courses that apply to a real store from the first lesson: Boost Ecommerce SEO with Internal Linking, for product and category pages, and Increase Sales on Shopify with Content Marketing, which welcomes beginners. Advertising students can take High-Impact Digital Advertising Campaigns and How to Incorporate PPC into Marketing Strategies, which covers conversion optimization, budget allocation and how to win buy-in from leadership. Social managers have plenty too. There is a crash course, a Social toolkit course, a course on building a social listening program, a beginner's course on influencer campaigns, and even an emoji marketing course.
Analytics and AI round out the catalog. Fundamentals of Marketing Analytics, Analytics for In-House Marketing Teams and Marketing Analysis: Where Theory Meets Practice, with 10 short lessons for beginners, need no paid plan to follow. AI for Marketing suits beginners, AI Visibility Essentials covers adapting strategy to AI-powered search, and the AI Search Operating System course has 10 lessons over 41 minutes and ends with a 90-day plan. That last one is aimed at in-house SEO leads and agency leaders who must make the case to leadership.
Career, business owners and managers
The career category is the most useful for students. Get a Job in Digital Marketing (with no experience) has 15 lessons over about an hour and covers LinkedIn profiles and cold emails. It is aimed at graduates and career changers, and the career courses promise skills such as strategic thinking, communication, leadership and personal branding. Small business owners and local marketers should look at Local SEO Essentials, which teaches Google Business Profile optimization, local keyword research, citations, reviews and what it calls the 9 critical ranking factors for local search. An owner can finish it in an evening. Managers have SEO Strategy for In-House Marketers, and agency staff have Data-Driven Search and Conversions for Agencies.
A certificate proves you finished a vendor's course. Pair it with a real project and before and after numbers, which is what an interviewer will ask about.
What a certificate is worth
Each course ends with a Semrush Academy certificate, and Semrush suggests sharing it on LinkedIn. Be clear about what it proves. A certificate shows you finished a vendor's course; it is not an independent qualification. It proves familiarity with one vendor's tools, as the Academy positions them, and not results. Employers that use Semrush value it more than those that do not. A hiring manager at an agency that runs every client on Semrush will read it as proof that a new hire needs less training, while a company on another tool will mostly see a sign of curiosity.
That is why the certificate works best as a companion, not a centerpiece. Combine it with a project you ran on a real site, with before and after numbers. That is what an interviewer will ask about. For agency job seekers there is one more angle. Agencies listed in Semrush's partner directory raise their Agency Score by passing the Semrush for Digital Agencies exam plus a toolkit exam in SEO, content marketing, advertising, social media or competitor analysis, and passing both earns a Certified Semrush Partner badge. A graduate who already holds Academy certifications helps the employer's listing. It is a small but real advantage at Semrush-heavy agencies.
Semrush does not offer individual subscription plans for students. Outside a participating class, the options are the free plan, the 7-day trial or full price.
Does a certificate unlock a trial?
Not reliably. The Academy FAQ says completing a course gives access to a free trial of Semrush tools. The help center is stricter: each toolkit trial can be activated once per account, and anyone who has had any trial or paid plan cannot get a free SEO trial. The two pages do not fully agree. If you already used a trial, do not count on a second one.
Semrush for Education: the university program
Semrush for Education is a program for accredited colleges and universities [3]. Professors integrate Semrush into a marketing course, and students get access to the toolkit and to the Academy courses the professor assigns. Semrush calls it a plug-and-play, self-study solution that needs no extra work from the educator. It describes the audience as college-level learners who need a foundation in digital marketing concepts and tools before entering the field, and it is built into a degree course by the educator rather than offered as a standalone course. Graduate programs and MBA classes are explicitly included.
Who qualifies, and which degrees
The program works through educators, not individual students. It is limited to accredited institutions in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Europe. Students elsewhere, or students applying on their own, are not covered. The degree rules are less clear, because the program page is inconsistent. Its introduction lists bachelor's, master's and MBA degrees, while its FAQ adds associate's degrees. Community college instructors should apply and ask, rather than assume either version is the final word.
What the class gets, and for how long
The program includes Semrush license promo codes for the educator and students, unlimited Academy courses, and an Academy certificate for each assigned course a student completes. Professors choose the courses, and with new ones added monthly they can match assignments to the syllabus week by week. Semrush says the program is completely free for 3 months, and the help center agrees on the three months [1]. That fits one semester, roughly. What the page does not say is what happens after three months or whether access renews for a new class.
That gap matters for planning. A single-semester course is covered, but a longer one is not clearly covered. A professor who plans a full-year module should confirm in writing whether a second cohort in the spring term gets its own three months, because the program page answers that question nowhere. Ask before building a syllabus around it.
Applying, and how big the program is
Applying takes two steps. Submit the online application, and if the criteria are met, Semrush says it will reply within five working days. Then send details of the digital marketing class to get student access. Apply at least a month before term starts. On scale, Semrush says 350+ universities trust the program and 25,000+ students have taken part. Those are Semrush's own figures. A university marketing analyst from Monash University is quoted on Semrush's pricing pages describing a rollout across all faculties, but that is a paid deployment, not the free program.
A semester plan for professors
Three months of access covers about one term, and a simple structure gets the most out of it. The course order above already does most of the planning, because the Academy courses teach the tools while the program gives students access to the toolkit itself. The goal is that students finish with certificates and a portfolio piece, which is exactly the pairing an interviewer wants to see. Professors who cannot get into the program can still teach with the free plan, but they should design exercises around its limits, as the next section explains. A workable plan looks like this:
- Week one: assign the SEO Essentials course.
- Week two: assign a toolkit crash course.
- From week three: run a site audit and keyword project on a real local business.
Students on their own: free plan, trial or full price
A student who wants Semrush outside a class has three options, and only the free plan costs nothing for good. The free plan gives 1 project, 10 reports a day across the main tools, a 100-page Site Audit and 10 tracked keywords [4]. That is enough for light practice on a personal site or a club's website, and it pairs well with the free Academy courses and the free tools that need no account. For a deeper look at what the free tier covers, see our guide on whether Semrush is free.
The limits show up fast in coursework, though. Ten reports a day run out in one research session, and exports are not available from the Keyword Magic Tool on free accounts. A class assignment that needs a keyword spreadsheet will not work on the free plan. Professors should design exercises around screenshots, or apply for the program.
The Academy FAQ links course completion to a free trial, but the help center says anyone who has had any trial or paid plan cannot get a free SEO trial.
The other two routes cost money or patience. A 7-day trial unlocks paid limits, but exporting data is disabled during every trial, so use it to practice reports on screen. Start it only when a course is finished, so the seven days go on practice rather than lessons. Past the trial, the cheapest plan costs US$139 a month, with no student discount. Our Semrush pricing guide breaks down the plans.
Free learning outside the Academy
Semrush's help center is a second classroom that needs no enrollment. It publishes step-by-step workflows that walk through several tools in order, such as its keyword research workflow, which runs from competitor analysis to tracking results. They are free. For a student with one project, a workflow is often more practical than a full course, and it pairs naturally with the free plan's daily reports.
Frequently asked questions
Is Semrush Academy free?+
Yes. All courses and certificates are free; you need a free Semrush account to enroll, and no card is needed.
Does Semrush have a student discount?+
No. There is no individual student plan; accredited universities can apply for three months of free classroom access through Semrush for Education.
Who can apply for Semrush for Education?+
Educators at accredited colleges and universities in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Europe. Students cannot apply on their own.
How long does Semrush for Education access last?+
Semrush says the program is completely free for 3 months, which fits roughly one semester. The page does not say whether access renews for a new class.
Is the free Semrush plan enough for coursework?+
For light practice, yes: 1 project and 10 reports a day. But exports are not available from the Keyword Magic Tool on free accounts, so assignments that need a keyword spreadsheet will not work.
Does finishing an Academy course give me a free trial?+
The Academy FAQ says it does, but the help center says each toolkit trial can be activated once per account. If you already used a trial, do not count on a second one.
The bottom line
Semrush's education offer is generous on learning and narrow on access. Every Academy course and certificate is free, the university program gives accredited classes three months of tools, and the free plan covers personal practice. There is no student discount, so independent learners should expect to stay on the free plan or pay full price. Take the courses, build one real project, and save the trial for the week it counts.
