What Sprout's AI actually is

Sprout Social sells AI in two layers, plus one bridge to the outside. The first layer is Trellis, an AI agent you talk to in plain language, which reads your Sprout data and answers questions about it. The second is AI Assist, a set of smaller buttons spread across Compose, the Smart Inbox, Listening and reports that write, rewrite, summarize and translate. The bridge is a connection to ChatGPT through Sprout's own MCP server. Each layer has different plan rules, a different meter and, in places, a different model underneath. That is the part most buyers miss. We read Sprout's pricing page, its help center, its release notes and its AI terms to map all three.

The short version is simple. AI Assist is metered by plan, not by credits. Trellis is metered by credits on every plan. The ChatGPT connection is narrow and read-only. And the data terms give Sprout more room than its own help pages suggest. If you only remember one thing from this page, remember that last one, because it is the rule that applies to everything else you type into these features.

Watch out
Sprout may train on your AI content

The AI Features Terms let Sprout use inputs and outputs to train its own AI, during and after the contract; we found no opt-out.

Trellis, the agent, and what it can see

Trellis arrived in the fourth quarter of 2025 as an AI agent that navigates Sprout and turns large volumes of data into business intelligence. You ask in plain language. It can detect sentiment shifts and emerging themes in Listening data, suggest campaign ideas, list your top five and lowest five posts by engagement rate, and flag underperforming posts so you can adjust the calendar. Answers can go straight into Compose as drafts. Trellis Threads let you keep several conversations and switch between them, and each thread is locked to one agent. It works on whole days at minimum. Hourly or minute-level data is out of reach, so do not ask it what happened in the last hour of a launch.

The scope question, answered by date

Sprout's pages disagree about what Trellis can read. Older help pages say it is limited to Listening data for now. A prompt-tips page from the same period says one thread can combine listening trends, inbox sentiment and post performance. The second-quarter 2026 product update presents Trellis as an engine across Listening, the Smart Inbox, Publishing and Reporting, and a newer Sprout Bites page agrees: it reads Publishing, Smart Inbox, Reporting and Listening data, the last only if Listening is on your plan. We follow the newer pages. The older ones date from around March 2026, when Sprout's help center described Trellis as working with Listening data only.

Credits: 100 per seat, and what spends them

Every user gets 100 Trellis credits a month on the base plan, whichever plan that is, and the allowance resets each month [1]. Only Trellis Chat and Trellis skills spend credits. AI Assist never touches them. How many credits a question costs depends on how complex the prompt is, how much data Trellis has to retrieve and how many MCP tools it calls along the way. Broad, multi-year analyses cost more. Long chat threads burn the allowance faster too, which is why Sprout advises starting a new chat for each task rather than piling questions into one thread.

⚠️
Watch out
The fair use cap switches Trellis off

Hitting the cap disables Trellis until the end of the calendar month. Sprout can adjust usage limits from time to time and throttle or restrict access above them, and that gives no right to a refund or credit.

Above the credits sits a second limit. In March 2026 Sprout introduced a fair use cap on the language-model resources Trellis consumes, described as a way to keep pricing predictable. When an account hits it, Trellis is switched off until the end of the calendar month. Sprout still describes the cap as under evaluation, and its AI terms allow it to adjust usage limits from time to time and to throttle or queue requests above them, with no refund or credit when that happens. Plan for the cap to exist even if you never see it.

Trellis Plus and what it costs a team

Trellis Plus is the paid upgrade: 1,000 credits a month per user instead of 100, still under fair use limits. It costs $28 per user a month billed annually or $35 billed monthly [2]. Admins buy it per seat on the AI Settings page, and a Plus seat can be reassigned once per usage period. Some features need it outright: Trellis case summaries and drafts require Plus, on top of cases, which are Advanced only. Remember that add-ons follow Sprout's billing rules, so removing one later brings no refund.

Because it is priced per user, the cost scales with the team. Five people on Plus billed annually come to 5 × $28 = $140 a month, by our arithmetic, for 5,000 credits instead of 500. One analyst with Plus and four colleagues on the standard allowance adds $28 a month on top of the five seats and still gives the heavy user ten times the room. One Professional seat with Plus, billed annually, works out to $299 + $28 = $327 a month for that person, by our arithmetic. Start with one seat and watch the meter.

Trellis Studio and the Performance and Engagement agent

Trellis Studio, currently a limited release to select customers, turns a question you ask every week into a skill that runs on a schedule. You build a skill from a template, point it at chosen profiles, tags or Listening topics, set a cadence such as Mondays, and the result lands in your inbox. Sprout documents four starting skills. Compare Post Performance looks at the last 90 days and picks the top five and bottom five posts. Optimize Upcoming Content reviews the next 30 days of scheduled posts for gaps and risks. A Listening sentiment skill reads a topic over the past seven days. A content trend skill queries the top 100 posts a month by engagement rate.

Two caveats matter. Studio and the multi-domain Insights agent are a limited release to select customers, so a trial account may not see them, and Sprout's list of AI features names OpenAI as the engine behind Studio. More practically, skills spend credits just as chat does, so a weekly skill quietly takes a share of the allowance before anyone opens a chat. The audit trail logs skills being created, updated and deleted, under Trellis skill names since August 21, 2026, which helps an admin see who set what running.

The Performance and Engagement agent is the other piece. It needs Professional or above and the OpenAI integration left on, which it is by default. The Listening agent covers Listening only, while the Insights agent combines several domains. Customers without Listening get only the Performance and Engagement agent. That leaves a gap Sprout does not explain: Essentials and Standard list Trellis with 100 credits, yet the agent for owned data needs Professional, so it is unclear what those plans can ask about without Listening.

One task per Trellis chat

Long threads burn credits faster. Start a new chat for each question and keep date ranges no wider than you need.

AI Assist, feature by feature and plan by plan

AI Assist is the older layer. It began in June 2023 with caption suggestions in Compose and grew feature by feature into publishing, the inbox, Listening, reports and Employee Advocacy. It spends no Trellis credits, so a team can lean on it daily without watching the credit meter, though the AI terms let Sprout set and adjust usage limits on any AI feature. Access is set by plan, and the gates are where it bites:

Smaller helpers fill the gaps. Analyze Charts gives up to five bullet points per chart in My Reports, which needs the Premium Analytics add-on. Analyze Topics in Listening evaluates up to 1,000 of a topic's highest-engagement messages. Recommend Tags, added to Compose in September 2026, ranks tag suggestions by confidence, based on your historical tagging patterns. Guardian users can describe a data type in plain language and get a validated regex.

Which models run what

Sprout uses two kinds of model and says so. Some pre-trained models, Claude among them, are hosted by Sprout through AWS Bedrock inside its own cloud environment, and Sprout counts those as first-party AI. Generate Posts and Summarize Conversation run on Claude this way. Both are first-party and cannot be switched off; you can only choose not to use them. Other features call OpenAI, which Sprout classes as third-party AI hosted outside its infrastructure: Enhance Post, the Listening summaries and keyword suggestions, the Performance and Engagement agent and Trellis Studio (a limited release) among them. The alt text model card names GPT-4 Turbo, used out of the box and evaluated on English only.

The OpenAI integration is on by default, and only the account owner can turn it off. Doing so disables every OpenAI-powered feature, including image sharing for alt text. It does not disable the ChatGPT connection, which an admin has to switch off separately in the Integrations Center. Sentiment and spam detection are older, classic machine learning trained on general de-identified data. Reclassifying a message feeds back into that model.

ChatGPT through Sprout's MCP server

The ChatGPT connection, launched in November 2025, lets ChatGPT read Sprout data through Sprout's MCP server with OAuth sign-in. Sprout supports that server for ChatGPT only; Claude, Gemini and other assistants are not built, tested or documented. The newer FAQ says only licensed users on Professional, Advanced or Enterprise can use it, with a ChatGPT Plus, Pro or Enterprise account [3]. An older FAQ named no plan and required Pro or Enterprise, and a product-update page called it an all-plans feature. We follow the newer page.

The scope is narrow. It covers TikTok only: published-post insights and performance metrics. It cannot answer Instagram or other network questions, has no ad data and takes no write actions, so it cannot create posts. Setup needs someone who is an admin in both Sprout and ChatGPT, and Developer Mode turned on in ChatGPT. If the Sprout admin who connected it leaves, the connection stops until another admin signs in again.

What the AI terms let Sprout do with your data

Sprout's AI Features Terms took effect on July 7, 2026, and they win over the main agreement wherever AI is involved. You accept them by enabling or using any AI feature. On training, the terms draw a clear line. Sprout will not let its AI providers train their models on your inputs and outputs, though those providers may still process the content for content moderation and their own other business purposes. Sprout itself may use them to train and improve its own AI features, during and after your contract [4]. We found no opt-out on that page. Older help pages talk only about outside providers, so they do not limit what Sprout may do itself, and the newer terms are the ones that govern.

The rest of the terms are worth a read before rollout. Outputs may be inaccurate, biased or identical to another customer's, and you alone must review them before publishing. Sensitive information must not go in. The features may not profile people by traits such as religion, health or sexual orientation, nor run electoral campaigns. Sprout's indemnity does not cover AI outputs, and conversational answers about Sprout's own pricing or contract terms are not binding. The full list of AI providers is available only on request.

Five workflows a team can run this month

These come straight from what Sprout documents, not from a sales deck. Workflows 1, 2 and 5 need Trellis Studio, currently a limited release to select customers, so check that your account has it. Sprout does not publish how many credits a skill costs, so watch the meter in the first month. Pick two of the five, run them for a full month, then judge whether the time saved justifies the plan you are on.

  1. The Monday performance brief. Schedule Compare Post Performance in Studio for Monday mornings. The team starts the week with the 90-day top five and bottom five instead of building that list by hand.
  2. The calendar check before it ships. Run Optimize Upcoming Content against the next 30 days and fix gaps before posts go out. Published posts cannot be edited in Sprout, so this is the cheap moment to catch problems.
  3. Accessible posts by default. Generate alt text in the asset library once, so every reuse carries it, and translate it when a post goes to another market.
  4. Faster care replies on Advanced. Draft the answer, use Enhance Reply to adjust tone, and summarize long private threads before handing a case to a colleague.
  5. The weekly listening read. With Listening on the plan, schedule the seven-day sentiment skill on your brand topic and ask Trellis about any shift it flags.
💡
Toolkit tip
Write alt text in the library

Alt text generated on an asset in the asset library stays attached every time the asset is reused, so you do the work once.

When the AI is not worth paying for

Not every team needs this layer. On Essentials or Standard you get credits, but no Enhance Post, no Performance and Engagement agent and none of the inbox AI, so the AI case for those plans is thin. If you are weighing an upgrade only for AI, price the plan first in our Sprout Social pricing guide. Without Listening, Trellis loses its most documented use. Read our Listening guide before you assume it is included. It is not; it is a separate add-on, available from Standard up, and Essentials cannot add it.

Skip Trellis Plus until a named person has hit the 100-credit wall twice. Skip the ChatGPT route if TikTok is not a main channel. And if your legal team objects to Sprout using your inputs and outputs to improve its own AI, we found no opt-out in the terms. Teams that want their own scripts or tools pulling Sprout data should read our Sprout Social API guide instead, because the API sits on Advanced.

Frequently asked questions

What is Trellis in Sprout Social?+

Trellis is Sprout's AI agent. You ask questions in plain language and it answers from your Sprout data: Listening data if you have Listening, and Publishing, Smart Inbox and Reporting data through the Performance and Engagement agent, which needs Professional or above and the OpenAI integration left on, which it is by default.

How many Trellis credits do I get?+

Every user gets 100 credits a month on every plan. Trellis Plus raises that to 1,000 credits per user, under a fair use cap.

How much does Trellis Plus cost?+

Trellis Plus costs $28 per user a month billed annually or $35 billed monthly, bought per seat by an admin.

Does Sprout Social train AI on my data?+

Under the AI Features Terms effective July 7, 2026, Sprout may use your AI inputs and outputs to train its own AI features, during and after your contract. Its AI providers may not train on them, though they may process them for content moderation and their own other business purposes. We found no opt-out on that page.

Does Sprout Social have an MCP server?+

Yes, for ChatGPT only, and per Sprout's newer help page only on Professional, Advanced or Enterprise, with a ChatGPT Plus, Pro or Enterprise account (an admin of both connects it, with Developer Mode on). The connection reads TikTok published-post insights only and cannot create posts.

Which Sprout plan has AI replies in the inbox?+

Enhance Reply and Summarize Conversation are Advanced only. Enhance Post in Compose needs Professional or Advanced.

The bottom line

Sprout's AI is useful where the work repeats: weekly performance briefs, calendar checks, alt text, tone fixes and summaries in a busy inbox. It is generous on paper, with 100 credits per seat on every plan, but the meaningful features sit on Professional and Advanced, the agent's scope depends on Listening, and the fair use cap can switch Trellis off mid-month. Buy for the workflows above, add Trellis Plus one seat at a time, and read the AI Features Terms before anyone pastes in data you would not want a vendor to learn from.
