What the Vimeo screen recorder is in late 2026
Vimeo's recorder is no longer one product but a set of entry points that all lead to the same place. Record Studio is the browser recorder: it captures your screen, your camera or both, and it carries the teleprompter and the AI script writer. You reach it from the Record icon on your Vimeo homepage or the Vimeo Record extension for Chrome, and the mobile apps record on a phone. The old Record desktop app is gone for new installs. If an older guide tells you to download a desktop recorder, ignore it. That guide is out of date.
The recordings land straight in your Vimeo library, so there is no separate export step and no file to upload afterward. That is the real point of recording inside Vimeo. The same video then picks up captions, a transcript, comments and viewer analytics. Every plan, including Free, gets the recorder. What changes by plan is how long each recording can run, how sharp it is, and whether the teleprompter and the editing tools are switched on.
Choosing where to record: browser, extension or phone
Record Studio in the browser
Record Studio needs nothing installed. It runs in Chrome, Safari and Edge, so it works on managed company laptops and Chromebooks. You choose camera, screen or both, then a frame ratio: landscape 16:9, square 1:1 or portrait 9:16 for social clips. The camera bubble can be mirrored, blurred, made transparent or set against an uploaded background image of up to 2560 by 1440 pixels. Animated GIFs do not work as backgrounds. Audio-only recordings get an animated waveform layout. One control is browser-specific: the resizable Picture-in-Picture panel works only in Google Chrome.
The Vimeo Record extension for Chrome
The extension installs from the Chrome Web Store and comes with every Vimeo plan. Since October 2024 it opens Record Studio in a new tab, replacing the small in-browser widget it used to show. In practice the extension is a shortcut. It is not a different recorder. It also records video messages straight into Jira and GitHub issue descriptions and comments. A Figma plugin records screen, camera or both from inside the Figma app or a Chromium browser. On a Mac, Vimeo's troubleshooting page points to two fixes. Chrome has to be current, and macOS has to grant it screen, microphone and camera access before the first take.
Update Chrome and grant it screen, microphone and camera access in macOS settings before your first take. Vimeo's troubleshooting page for Record on a Mac points to those two fixes.
Recording on a phone
The Vimeo mobile apps record directly on the device, with filters, lighting and zoom controls and a trim tool that cuts the start and end before upload. Here the help center contradicts itself. The pages that describe the current mobile app and its teleprompter give 120 minutes per video on paid plans and 30 minutes on Free. The page for the retired Record desktop app, the editor FAQ and the editor how-to page still say mobile recordings stop at 10 minutes. We lean on the two mobile pages, which describe the app as it is today, but treat the mobile cap as unconfirmed. Test one long take before you rely on it for a full lecture.
What each plan allows when you record
The limits that matter come down to three numbers: length, resolution and the extra tools. Free recordings stop at 30 minutes each, and paid recordings stop at 120 minutes [1]. Several Vimeo marketing pages say paid plans record with no time limit. The help center disagrees. Its lower figure is the one to plan around, so split anything longer than two hours. Resolution moved twice. A July 2025 update gave every plan 720p, 1080p and 2K recording, and since January 2026 the recorder goes up to 4K on Starter and above [2]. The Record Studio help page still says 2K.
| Plan | Length per recording | Top resolution | Teleprompter and AI scripts | Text-based editing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | 30 minutes | 2K | No | No |
| Starter | 120 minutes | 4K | No | No |
| Standard | 120 minutes | 4K | Yes | Yes |
| Advanced | 120 minutes | 4K | Yes | Yes |
For length and features the table follows the help center, not the marketing pages; the 4K figure comes from Vimeo's January 2026 update, which the Record Studio help page has not caught up with. Some product pages place the teleprompter, the AI script generator and text editing on Starter, but the plan pages and the Record Studio help page put them at Standard and above. Trust the help center when the two disagree, and check the upgrade screen inside your own account before paying for a feature.
Storage behaves differently by plan too. On paid plans, new recordings do not count toward your storage allowance. On Free they do, and Record Studio saves every recording as Unlisted by default. Unlisted is a non-public setting, so on Free each take draws on the 3 GB that embeddable and non-public videos share. Unlimited recordings is true on paid plans in the sense that matters: raw recordings do not fill the account. Videos you make in the editor do count toward storage on Starter, Standard and Advanced, per the same help page.
Prices come from the pricing page, per seat and with the period stated [3]. Starter costs $12 per seat a month billed annually or $20 billed monthly. Standard costs $25 per seat a month billed annually or $41 billed monthly, with five seats included. On annual billing, a single seat on the teleprompter tier costs $156 a year more than the cheaper tier, by our arithmetic ($300 against $144). Confirm the total for included seats at checkout, because the page does not state it. Our Vimeo pricing breakdown covers refunds and seats.
Recording a walkthrough, step by step
The flow is short, and the setup deserves more care than the recording itself. Check permissions, the window you share and the microphone before you start. Do a ten-second test before the real one. It costs nothing, and on Free it barely touches your storage. These are the steps we checked against Vimeo's help pages for Record Studio, in the order the studio presents them:
- Open Record Studio from the Record icon on your homepage, or click the extension.
- Pick camera, screen or both, then the ratio: 16:9 for training, 9:16 for social.
- Choose the window, tab or full screen to share, and allow camera and microphone access.
- Set your camera background and canvas color, which can be a solid color, a gradient or a HEX code.
- Load a script into the teleprompter if your plan has it, and remember it cannot run while you share a screen.
- Record, stop, and let the video save to your library as Unlisted.
If a recording sticks in a pending optimization state, Vimeo's troubleshooting page says Support has to help or the video has to be recreated. Recordings are also resized to the nearest resolution template after transcoding rather than stretched to 1080p, so an odd window size can come out slightly smaller than you expect. Our suggestion is to record a single browser tab or a full screen. Short takes beat long ones. Three ten-minute segments are easier to fix than one half-hour run.
The teleprompter and the AI script writer
The teleprompter sets Vimeo's recorder apart from an operating system's built-in screen capture. You paste or write a script, and it scrolls over the recording view while you read to the camera. You can change the scroll speed, the font size and mirror mode, and an auto speed setting uses voice recognition to follow your pace. On desktop it belongs to Standard and above. One limit catches people out: you cannot share your screen while the Record Studio teleprompter is on, because the teleprompter would appear in the final video. It is a tool for talking-head clips, intros and announcements. Demos need another approach.
The AI script generator drafts that script from a topic. You pick a length, short, medium or long, and a tone: Confident, Funny, Direct, Inspiring, Casual or Formal. Vimeo AI then fills the teleprompter window, and admins of team accounts and workspaces can switch script generation off in the Vimeo AI settings. In the live events version of the same tool, generating a new script erases whatever text was already in the window, so keep your own draft elsewhere.
Record Studio blocks screen sharing while the teleprompter is on, because the script would show in the video. Use it for camera-only takes, or record the demo separately.
On phones the teleprompter works differently, and in one respect better. That surprises people. The mobile help pages say the script shows as an overlay that does not appear in the final video. Countdown options are 3 seconds, 10 seconds or none. The mobile help page says paid users can generate the script with AI inside the app, but Vimeo's plan table puts AI scripts at Standard and above, so check your plan first. The current mobile pages give the same 120 and 30 minute caps as the browser, while older pages still say 10 minutes.
Trimming and editing after you stop
Every plan gets the basic tools. The video settings page opens a web or mobile editor that trims, splits and adds text, even on Free, and the trimmer works in steps of 20 milliseconds. Any video not made in the editor, a recording or an upload, opens there as a single scene you can split and trim. For most quick walkthroughs, a trim of the first and last few seconds is all the editing they need.
The 1080p ceiling in the editor
Here is the trade-off that matters for anyone who records in 4K. Editor videos are viewable and downloadable up to 1080p on every plan, and 4K footage brought into the editor is exported at 1080p [4]. An edited video is first saved at 720p, and the 1080p version follows after a few minutes of processing. If you need the sharp version for a product demo on a large screen, plan the take so it needs little editing.
Text-based editing on Standard
Standard and above add the text-based editor, which shows the transcript and cuts the video when you delete words. A button Vimeo calls AI Sparkles removes filler words and long gaps in bulk. It works on spoken English only, in the browser and in the Android and iOS apps. Videos longer than two hours cannot use it and fall back to the basic trimmer. That ceiling sits right at the 120 minute recording cap, so a full-length recording is the longest the text editor will accept.
Sharing: privacy, review links, embeds and GIFs
Record Studio starts every video as Unlisted, and you can change that at any time. Passwords, domain-restricted embeds and password-protected review links need a paid plan. Review links are the best way to collect feedback from people without a Vimeo account: they leave time-coded comments, and guests can use @mentions. Free allows one review link per video, with an expiry of at most one month. More review links per video, each with its own settings, and review links for whole folders start at Standard, according to Vimeo's help center.
Embedding works on every plan, with one wrinkle. Several product pages say Free recordings carry a small Vimeo watermark when embedded, and that Starter removes it. The Free plan help page's option to turn off the Created with Vimeo watermark covers videos exported from the editor, not the embedded player. Check your own embed before sending it to a customer. Embeds also work in learning systems such as Canvas, Google Classroom, Moodle and Blackboard, and domain lists on paid plans keep a recording from playing on sites you did not approve. Our Vimeo embed guide covers the player settings by plan.
For email, Vimeo turns a video into a GIF: up to four per video, each up to six seconds, made only from the video itself. All users can put those GIFs and thumbnails into Gmail. Embedding in other email providers needs Advanced or Enterprise, and an account in Private Mode has to switch it off first, or recipients cannot watch.
Turn a recording into a GIF of up to six seconds and paste it into Gmail. Every plan can do it, but Private Mode has to be off or recipients cannot watch.
Captions, transcripts and meetings that upload themselves
Vimeo transcribes uploads automatically. The Free plan page lists AI transcription and captions, and anyone with edit access can download the transcript and caption files as .srt, .vtt or .ttml. Captions can take up to an hour. Subtitle translation into 36+ languages needs a paid plan and costs 10 AI credits a minute per language, and below Enterprise only the account Owner can run it. AI dubbing in 29 languages is Enterprise only, at 20 credits a minute per language. Paid plans get a one-time grant of 250 credits that expires after 30 days and does not renew; Enterprise has a yearly allocation. Free and trial accounts get none. Our Vimeo AI guide has the full rates.
Zoom cloud recordings upload to Vimeo on every plan, including Free, as soon as the recording ends, and land as Private by default. You cannot choose which meeting view Zoom sends, and one Zoom account links to one Vimeo account outside Enterprise with Video Library. Webex recordings also upload automatically, but need a Webex Business tier or higher, because Webex Basic has no cloud recording storage. For Webex, Vimeo notes that deleting a recording in one place does not delete it in the other. Google Meet auto-uploads arrived in January 2026 for Starter and above. The help page adds a Google Workspace Business Starter account and a Contributor or higher role on the Vimeo team.
Vimeo or Loom for screen recording
Loom is the tool most people compare, and its own pricing page sets up a clear contrast. Loom's free Starter plan allows 25 videos per person, five minutes per video and quality up to 720p. Loom lists Business at $18 per user a month and Business + AI at $24 per user a month, without saying which billing period those rates assume, and adds that annual billing saves 17%. Paid Loom plans record without a length cap at up to 4K, but editing by transcript waits for Business + AI or Enterprise. Password-protected videos are not on Loom's free plan.
Set against that, Vimeo's free tier is more generous on length, with 30 minutes per recording instead of five. Vimeo's text-based editing starts at Standard, at $25 per seat a month billed annually or $41 billed monthly, with five seats included and no published checkout total. Loom's sits on Business + AI, whose billing period is unstated. Confirm both totals before comparing. The bigger difference is what happens after recording. Vimeo is a full video host with an ad-free player, review links and analytics. Loom, which belongs to Atlassian, is built around quick messages between colleagues. Vimeo has the fixed 120 minute cap; Loom's paid plans do not. Pick by where the video goes next.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Vimeo screen recorder free?+
Yes. Every plan, including Free, can record screen and camera in Record Studio and with the Chrome extension, but Free recordings stop at 30 minutes each and new ones count toward the 3 GB that embeddable and non-public videos share.
How long can a Vimeo recording be?+
Up to 120 minutes per recording on paid plans and 30 minutes on Free, according to the Record Studio help page. Some marketing pages say paid plans are unlimited; plan around the help center figure.
Is there still a Vimeo Record desktop app?+
Not for new installs. Vimeo points new users to Record Studio in the browser or the Vimeo Record extension for Chrome, which has opened Record Studio in a new tab since October 2024.
Can Vimeo record in 4K?+
Yes, since January 2026 on Starter and above. Videos you rework in the Vimeo editor are exported at 1080p, so keep 4K demos light on editing.
Which plan has the Vimeo teleprompter?+
Standard and above on desktop, along with the AI script generator and text-based editing. The mobile help page says paid users can generate scripts with AI in the app, but Vimeo's plan table puts AI scripts at Standard and above, so check your plan.
Can Vimeo record Zoom meetings automatically?+
Vimeo imports Zoom cloud recordings on every plan as soon as the recording ends, set to Private by default. Webex works with Webex Business or higher, and Google Meet uploads need Vimeo Starter or above, a Google Workspace Business Starter account or higher, and a Contributor or higher role on the Vimeo team.
The bottom line
Vimeo's screen recorder is a good fit when the recording is the start of a video's life rather than the end: a demo that needs captions, a training clip that goes into a library, or an update that needs comments from a client. Record Studio in the browser does the work, the Chrome extension is a shortcut to it, and the phone apps handle recording away from a desk. Free covers 30-minute takes. Starter adds 4K and two-hour recordings that do not eat storage. Standard is the plan to pick if you want the teleprompter, AI scripts and editing by transcript. Just remember that anything you rework in the editor comes out at 1080p.
