The short answer
Buffer and Later both schedule posts, run a comment inbox, report on performance and give you a link-in-bio page. They split on almost everything else. Buffer charges per connected channel and keeps a free plan, so a solo owner with three accounts can start at zero and pay only for what gets connected. Later charges per plan, with each plan bundling social sets, users, a monthly post allowance per profile and a pool of AI credits. Later goes further on the top tier with competitor benchmarking and brand sentiment, while Buffer's paid plans keep unlimited analytics history. Buffer goes further for developers, with a public API and an official MCP server on every plan.
So the choice is rarely about features alone. It comes down to how many profiles you run, how many people need a login, and whether you want listening-style tools at all. Small teams posting across many networks tend to land on Buffer. Brands that live on Instagram and TikTok and want benchmarks tend to land on Later. Read the pricing section first. It decides most cases.
Two ways of charging: per channel versus per plan
Buffer bills every connected channel once you upgrade, including the first three, and a Start Page counts as a channel too [1]. Later's pricing page shows three plans with prices per month billed yearly, offers a 14-day trial on each, and lists no free plan [2]; its help center does describe a limited Free plan, with 12 posts per profile a month. Billing Later yearly saves 25%, and the table shows both rates.
| Plan | Price | What sets the limit |
|---|---|---|
| Buffer Free | $0 | Up to 3 channels, 1 user, 10 scheduled posts per channel at a time |
| Buffer Essentials | $5 per channel a month billed yearly, $6 per channel billed monthly | 1 user, fair use of 5,000 scheduled posts per channel |
| Buffer Team | $10 per channel a month billed yearly, $12 per channel billed monthly | Unlimited users, approvals |
| Later Starter | $18.75 a month billed yearly, $25 billed monthly | 1 social set (8 profiles, one per network), 1 user, 30 posts per profile a month, 5 AI credits a month |
| Later Growth | $37.50 a month billed yearly, $50 billed monthly | 2 social sets, 2 users, 180 posts per profile a month, 50 AI credits a month |
| Later Scale | $82.50 a month billed yearly, $110 billed monthly | 6 social sets, 4 users, unlimited posts, 100 AI credits a month |
Write down how many profiles you run, how many people need a login and how often you post. Those three numbers decide which pricing model is cheaper.
What a social set is, and why the post cap matters
A social set is one profile of each supported network, eight in all, and it is meant to hold one brand or one client. Starter gives you one set and Growth gives you two, which is 16 profiles. Scale gives six sets, or 48 profiles. The catch is the post cap. It counts scheduled posts per profile per month, and posts count the moment you schedule them, not when they go out. Thirty posts a month on Starter is about one a day per profile. A brand that posts twice a day on Instagram outgrows Starter quickly.
Buffer's volume tiers
Buffer's price per channel falls as you add channels. On monthly billing, channels one to ten cost $6 per channel on Essentials and $12 per channel on Team; channels 11 to 25 drop to $4 per channel on both plans. From 26 to 50 the rate is $3 per channel a month, and from 51 it falls to $1 on Essentials and $2 on Team. Yearly billing uses the same bands, per channel a year: $60 on Essentials and $120 on Team for the first ten, then $40, $30 and $20 on both plans. The vendor's own example puts ten channels on Team at $120 a month billed monthly, or $100 a month billed yearly.
What each costs at real team sizes
Prices on two different units are hard to compare in the abstract, so take three sample setups. For a solo owner with three accounts, Buffer Free covers this at no cost, with one user and ten scheduled posts per channel in the queue. On Essentials billed yearly, three channels cost $180 a year. The Starter plan costs $225 a year by our arithmetic, for one user and up to eight profiles. For three accounts, Buffer is cheaper on either plan.
A small brand on eight networks, one person. Here the math flips. Eight channels on Essentials billed yearly come to $480 a year, while Starter stays at $225 a year. Starter's 30 posts per profile and 5 AI credits are the trade-off. Each extra network adds $60 per channel a year on Essentials billed yearly, while a social set holds eight profiles at one price. If the brand posts more than once a day on a profile, the Growth plan with its 180-post cap is the next step, at twice the price of Starter.
A team of two running two brands. Sixteen channels on Team billed yearly come to $1,440 a year by our arithmetic, after the volume discount. The Growth plan costs $450 a year with two users and 16 profiles. Team, though, gives unlimited users, while Growth's third and fourth person cost extra. On Growth and Scale, an extra user costs $3.75 a month billed yearly ($5 billed monthly), and an extra social set costs $11.25 a month billed yearly ($15 billed monthly), and Starter cannot buy extras at all.
The pattern is clear. Buffer wins when you have few channels or many people. Later wins when one or two people run many profiles and post at a modest pace. Past ten channels, Buffer's volume tiers soften the bill on both monthly and yearly billing, and every extra Later social set adds $11.25 a month billed yearly, so very large setups deserve a fresh calculation on both pricing pages. Do it with your real profile count, not a guess.
Networks: Snapchat on one side, Bluesky and Mastodon on the other
Buffer connects Facebook Pages and Groups, Instagram, X, LinkedIn, Pinterest, TikTok, Google Business Profiles, Mastodon, YouTube Shorts, Threads, Bluesky, Substack and its own Start Page. Facebook Groups publish by notification, which means you finish the post in the app. Instagram personal profiles and some Instagram and TikTok post types, such as trending sounds, need the same manual finish. Facebook personal profiles and LinkedIn groups cannot be connected. YouTube is Shorts only, and there is no Snapchat.
Later's pricing page lists Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Threads, YouTube, Pinterest, LinkedIn and Snapchat. Snapchat is the one network Later covers that Buffer does not, limited to Spotlight and Public Story posts scheduled from desktop only, and Later auto-posts them alongside Reels, Shorts and TikTok videos. As on Buffer, Later's YouTube support is Shorts only, and Instagram needs a business or creator profile. Later ended X support on August 28, 2025, though some of its older pages still list it. X, Bluesky, Mastodon, Google Business Profile and Substack are all missing from Later's network list, so a brand active on those has one realistic option here.
Publishing and the link-in-bio page
Scheduling and the composer
Both tools cover the basics well. Buffer has a queue, a calendar, drafts, an ideas board, tags and templates; paid plans add a hashtag manager and first comments on Instagram, LinkedIn and Facebook Pages. Media comes in from Canva, Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive on every plan. Later schedules single images, videos and carousels, including mixed photo-and-video carousels, plus Instagram Stories and Reels. It can push one post to up to ten profiles at once with edits per profile. It also adds hashtag suggestions, first comments, and a search for user-generated content by tags and mentions. Instagram product tagging needs Growth. Media storage is unlimited from Growth up; for Free and Starter, Later's pages disagree.
Later also suggests a best time to post for Instagram, Facebook and TikTok from Starter up and shows it in the calendar. Buffer's composer suggests a posting time when you schedule, based on general engagement patterns and, on some plans, recent performance, but Insights has no best-time report yet. Insights does offer a LinkedIn follower-growth benchmark against similar accounts and AI takeaways on your results. For a creator-led Instagram account, Later's best-time view in the calendar is still a point in its favor.
Start Page versus Later Link in Bio
Buffer's Start Page is a small microsite at username.start.page with images, videos, music, updates and an email signup block tied to Mailchimp. It shows only the five most recent updates, it cannot be edited from the mobile app, and on paid plans it costs a channel fee like any other channel. Later's Link in Bio comes without Later branding on every paid plan (the Free plan's page carries a Later banner) and works for Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat profiles. It imports an existing Linktree page, supports a Mailchimp integration and custom SEO titles, and handles affiliate links through a linked Mavely account. A TikTok bio link needs a Business account with more than 1,000 followers.
Later counts scheduled posts per profile per month at the moment you schedule them. Thirty a month on Starter is about one a day.
Inbox and engagement
Buffer's Community inbox handles comments on ten networks: Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Threads, Bluesky, X, TikTok, YouTube, Mastodon and Google Business Profile reviews. It is on every plan, including Free, which gets five AI reply suggestions a week and one saved reply. Paid plans get unlimited AI replies. There are gaps. Buffer does not handle Instagram DMs or Story replies, and AI reply suggestions skip X.
Later's Social Inbox, still in beta and desktop only, starts at Growth. It handles DMs for Instagram and Facebook and comments for Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, and it lets a team assign messages and track them. Instagram DMs can be answered only within 7 days. Account Owners cannot yet stop individual members from using the inbox. The split is breadth versus DMs. Buffer reaches more networks for comments, even on Free. Later answers Instagram and Facebook DMs, but only on the middle and top plans.
Analytics, listening and benchmarking
How far back each one looks
Buffer's Insights shows 30 days of history on Free and unlimited history on Essentials and Team, with exports and reports. On Free the date ranges stop at the last 7 days, last 30 days and month to date; custom ranges and exports need a paid plan. Buffer's pricing page lists branded reports (logo and cover page) on Team only, while its help center describes a PDF export with your own cover logo on any paid plan. The limits are real: no custom report builder, no demographics, no Google Business Profile analytics, and disconnecting a channel deletes its analytics.
Later caps history by plan: up to three months on Starter, a year on Growth and two years on Scale. Pinterest analytics stay at three months on every plan. Custom Analytics, a cross-profile view with filters and shareable reports, is Scale only, and so are Meta Ads analytics. Later's TikTok analytics include follower demographics, an area where Buffer has nothing.
Removing a channel from Buffer deletes its analytics, and Later caps history at three months on Starter. Export reports before you change plans or tools.
Listening and competitors: only one side plays
Buffer does not offer social listening, sentiment analysis or ads management. Its help center says so plainly. Later's Scale plan adds competitive benchmarking for up to 20 competitors, plus Brand Health, which scores sentiment over time, and Brand Mentions [3]. Benchmarking predicts how a profile should perform from its past and compares the real results to that prediction. Listening is part of Scale too, and its reach varies by feature: benchmarking covers Instagram, Brand Mentions covers Instagram and TikTok, and Brand Health adds Facebook Pages. If you need to watch rivals, Buffer is out.
AI: unlimited assistant versus monthly credits
Buffer's AI Assistant is unlimited on every plan, Free included. It runs on OpenAI, and the text you type is shared with OpenAI. It drafts and rewrites posts for each network, adjusts tone and length, and generates ideas in the Create area. It cannot open links. It is also optional: it acts only when you open it in the composer or the Create space, and Buffer's core features do not depend on AI. Buffer also writes AI alt text, suggests replies and adds takeaways in Insights.
Later meters its AI. Caption Writer and Ideas share one monthly pool of credits that resets on the first of each month: 5 on Starter, 50 on Growth and 100 on Scale. One credit buys one caption or three ideas. On Growth and Scale, 100 extra credits cost $3.75 a month billed yearly ($5 billed monthly). Caption Writer works from keywords and learns your brand tone from past posts. Five captions a month is a sampler. Anyone who drafts with AI daily will find Buffer's approach simpler.
Teams, approvals, API and MCP
Users and approvals
Buffer's Free and Essentials plans have one user. Team opens unlimited users, approval workflows and access levels set per channel, from full posting rights to approval-only roles. Later gives one user on Starter, two on Growth and four on Scale, and approvals start at Growth. Clients can leave feedback comments through a review link without a Later account or a paid seat, which agencies will like, but formal approval needs a team member with the Reviewer role. Two catches: approvals do not hold back publishing, so a scheduled post goes live at its time even if nobody approved it, and external review links expire after 7 days. The in-app approval notification center needs Scale.
Developers and AI agents
This is Buffer's clearest lead. Every plan, Free included, gets a GraphQL API with keys and OAuth, and an official MCP server connects Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Perplexity and other assistants [4]. Free allows one key and 3,000 requests per 30 days; Team allows five keys and 15,000. MCP requests share the same quota. Later has no public API or developer platform, and no Zapier or webhooks. If you plan to post from scripts or an AI agent, Buffer is the only one of the two built for it.
The other Later: influencer marketing
Buffer is a social media tool and little else. Later is a bigger business, and it now introduces itself first as an influencer marketing company. Mavrck acquired Later in 2022, the two united under the Later brand in 2024, and Later bought the affiliate platform Mavely in 2025. Later Influence lets brands find creators among the millions in its creator index, message them, approve their content and pay them, sold through a demo. Creators can also earn through free affiliate programs. For a brand that already runs creator campaigns, keeping scheduling and influencers under one vendor has a pull. For everyone else, it is context. Later's press notes also point to a growing enterprise focus.
Discounts, trials and who should pick which
Both vendors cut prices for nonprofits, on different terms. Buffer gives 50% off its paid plans to qualifying nonprofits and reviews applications within 48 hours. The same half-off covers eligible startups and open-source projects with 1,000 or more GitHub stars. Later gives qualified nonprofits 50% off the annual Growth plan only and mentions no education discount. Buffer's 14-day trial runs on Team; with a card on file it converts and charges, and without one the account drops to Free. Later's 14-day trial needs a credit card and converts to a paid plan automatically unless you cancel before it ends. Refunds differ too: Buffer refunds monthly plans within 7 days and annual plans within 30 days, while Later's plans renew automatically and are non-refundable, apart from case-by-case exceptions.
On reputation, business-software review sites rate both tools well. On Trustpilot, Buffer's newest reviews are split between very happy and very unhappy users, while Later's are very negative and dominated by charges after the trial and refused refunds; read Trustpilot only as a map of complaints, and only those that touch the plan you would buy. Ratings tell you about mood, not fit. The deciding facts are still the pricing unit, the network list and whether you need listening, so weigh reviews only after those three line up.
Pick Buffer if you run a handful of channels, want a free plan for up to three channels, need many teammates, post to X, Bluesky, Mastodon, Google Business or Substack, or want an API and MCP access. Our Buffer pricing breakdown works out the per-channel cost in detail. Pick Later if one or two people manage profiles spread across many networks, especially Instagram and TikTok, you need Snapchat, Instagram DMs or competitor benchmarks, or you also hire creators. Still undecided? Our Buffer alternatives guide covers other options.
Frequently asked questions
Is Buffer cheaper than Later?+
For a few channels, yes: Buffer has a free plan for up to 3 channels and Essentials at $5 per channel a month billed yearly. For one person running four to eight profiles on different networks, Later Starter at $18.75 a month billed yearly can cost less than Buffer Essentials, within its 30 posts per profile a month.
Does Later have a free plan?+
Yes, a limited one: Later's help center describes a Free plan with 12 posts per profile a month and a Link in Bio page with a Later banner, though its pricing page shows only Starter, Growth and Scale. Each paid plan comes with a 14-day trial that asks for a credit card and turns into a paid plan automatically unless you cancel before it ends.
Does Buffer support Snapchat?+
No. Snapchat is supported by Later, not by Buffer, while Buffer covers X, Bluesky, Mastodon, Google Business Profiles and Substack, which Later does not.
Which one has social listening?+
Later, on Scale only. Its Scale plan includes competitive benchmarking of Instagram accounts for up to 20 competitors, Brand Health and Brand Mentions, with Brand Mentions limited to Instagram and TikTok and Brand Health adding Facebook Pages. Buffer does not offer listening or sentiment analysis.
Do Buffer and Later have an API?+
Buffer has a GraphQL API and an official MCP server on every plan, including Free. Later has no public API or developer platform, and no Zapier or webhooks.
Do both offer nonprofit discounts?+
Yes. Buffer gives 50% off its paid plans to qualifying nonprofits, and Later gives qualified nonprofits 50% off the annual Growth plan.
The bottom line
Buffer and Later answer different questions. Buffer is the cheaper, simpler choice for small accounts and large teams, with a free plan, unlimited AI drafting, an inbox across ten networks and a developer platform Later does not offer. Later bundles many profiles into flat plans, adds Snapchat, DMs from Growth up, best-time recommendations in the calendar and, on Scale, benchmarking and sentiment. Its tight post caps and AI credits are the price of that bundle. Count your profiles, your people and your posting pace before you choose.
