Try it before you sign up, then open a free account

Buffer is a social media scheduler built around a simple loop: connect your channels, set the times you want to post, fill a queue, and let it publish. Before you give it an email address, you can poke around in guest mode, a preview that lets you write up to 10 drafts with planned dates, attach images and try three tags, all saved in your browser for up to 30 days [1]. Nothing gets scheduled or published there. Video, the AI Assistant, AI alt text and first comments also need a real account, and Insights only shows sample data.

Guest mode is not the Free plan. It is a sandbox. On sign-up, guest drafts keep their text, images, tags and dates, but not the networks you picked. The Free plan itself covers up to three channels for one user, with 10 scheduled posts per channel at a time, 100 ideas and 3 tags. It also carries a lifetime cap of 8 unique channels per network, and disconnecting does not reset the count [2]. If you expect to outgrow three channels, read our Buffer pricing breakdown before you connect anything, because paid plans bill every channel.

Connect the channels Buffer can actually publish to

The second step decides most of what Buffer can do for you, because each network has its own rules about which account types work. Buffer connects Facebook Pages, Facebook Groups, Instagram, X, LinkedIn, Pinterest, TikTok, Google Business Profiles, Start Pages, Mastodon, YouTube Shorts, Threads, Bluesky and Substack [3]. It has no account picker. It connects whichever account is logged in to the network in your browser, so switch to the right login first. Snapchat, Reddit, WhatsApp, Telegram, Twitch and Discord are not supported at all.

Instagram and Facebook: the account type matters

For Instagram, use a Business or Creator account. Logging in with Instagram gives you automatic publishing, Insights and comments on every plan. A personal Instagram account works only with notification publishing, which means Buffer reminds you on your phone and you finish the post yourself, with no analytics or comments. Linking a Facebook Page is optional, needed only for locations, collaborators, liking mentions and Reel music, and each Instagram account needs its own Page. On Facebook, Pages connect normally, personal profiles cannot be connected, and Groups have been notification-only since Meta changed its Groups API in April 2024. Our guide to Buffer for Instagram goes deeper on Reels, Stories and the grid.

LinkedIn, X, TikTok and YouTube Shorts

A LinkedIn Page needs a Super Admin to connect or refresh it, and LinkedIn groups are not supported. Note that a personal profile and a company Page are two separate channels. On X, you can select only one account per post, following X guidelines. TikTok offers both automatic publishing and Notify Me, and anything that uses TikTok music, trending audio or polls has to go the notification route. YouTube is Shorts only, the connection must come from the channel Owner, and a brand-new channel may wait a day or two before it works.

Bluesky, Mastodon, Substack and the Start Page

Bluesky connects with a Bluesky App Password rather than a normal login, and custom servers are supported. Mastodon reads each server's character limit automatically. Substack works on every current plan, including Free, but Buffer publishes Substack Notes only, not newsletter issues or long-form posts. A Start Page, Buffer's link-in-bio page, counts as a channel: on Free it takes one of your three slots, and on paid plans it carries the normal channel fee. Mastodon, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Threads, Bluesky, Substack and personal Instagram profiles need the current plans, so old legacy accounts cannot add them.

⚠️
Watch out
Free has a lifetime channel cap

The Free plan allows 8 unique channels per network over the account's lifetime, and disconnecting does not reset it. Test client accounts sparingly.

Set your time zone and a posting schedule

Buffer publishes into time slots, not a blank calendar. Each channel has its own time zone, which adjusts for daylight saving automatically, and the default time zone you choose for new channels does not change channels already connected. Then you add posting times. Slots repeat weekly; there is no separate daily setting. Without any slots, the Next Available option in the composer disappears and every post needs a specific date and time. Only the account owner and users with Full Access can change a schedule, and a change moves queued posts but not those pinned to a custom date.

When you open the schedule, Buffer offers recommended times. Be clear about what those are. They come from general engagement data from active accounts in U.S. time zones since 2025, broken down per platform, not from your own audience [4]. They are a reasonable start for a new account. They are not personal. If you set a posting goal of 1, 3 or 5 posts a week per channel, Buffer creates recommended times to match, and the mobile app also allows a custom goal.

💡
Toolkit tip
Set slots before you write

Without posting times, Next Available disappears and every post needs a fixed date. Set a posting goal and Buffer creates recommended times for you.

Write your first post in the composer

The composer is where most of your time goes. Pick one or more channels, write the text, add media, and choose how it goes out. There are four scheduling options: Next Available drops the post into the next open slot, Prioritize (Essentials and Team only) puts it at the top of the schedule, Set Date and Time pins it to a moment, and Now publishes immediately. When you pick a specific day, Buffer can suggest a better time for that date under Posting Slots.

Tailor the post for each network

A post written once can be adjusted for each channel, and you will usually want to. Character limits differ widely: Instagram allows 2,200, LinkedIn 3,000, Pinterest 500, and X 280 for free accounts. TikTok allows 5 hashtags per post, and hashtags are linked everywhere except Pinterest and Substack, where they publish as plain text. Bluesky and Threads handles are not autocompleted, so type them in full. The composer has no text formatting, so bold and italic styling is not available.

Threads, media and alt text

For long posts on X, Threads, Mastodon and Bluesky, a beta Split into thread option breaks the text into a thread using rules plus a light AI pass, and Threads, Mastodon and Bluesky threads can hold up to 25 posts. Threads are built on the web; Buffer's mobile help says recent iOS versions (Android in beta) also support them. On Free, you can schedule one thread at a time per queue on those networks. Since September 2026, a single post can mix images and videos, published in the order you set. Image limits vary by network, with up to 10 images on Facebook and Instagram.

Add alt text before you schedule. It works on static images for X, Mastodon, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram and Bluesky, and AI alt text, still in beta, drafts a description you review and edit. It is not available for TikTok, GIFs or Google Business Profile posts. If a post was made with AI, the AI-Generated toggle passes a disclosure to the network so it shows its native label, on Instagram, TikTok videos, YouTube Shorts and original X posts.

First comment on paid plans, and link shortening

Paid plans add a first comment, published with the post on Instagram, LinkedIn and Facebook Pages, but not on Facebook Reels, Stories or Groups. Links are not shortened by default on any plan; you can turn on buff.ly per channel, except on Pinterest, Mastodon and Instagram. Two habits save trouble. Published posts cannot be edited or deleted through Buffer. And scheduled posts cannot be edited in bulk, because each channel's copy is a separate post.

Load posts in bulk, or let one repeat

When you have a month of content in a spreadsheet, use the CSV upload from each channel's settings. It is on every current plan, including Free, but not on legacy Pro, Premium or Business plans. The rules are strict. Rows over your plan's limit are skipped silently, with no error message, so count before you upload. Bulk upload does not work for YouTube, and first comments cannot be added through it. Follow these steps when you prepare the file.

  1. Download the template for the channel; Pinterest has its own with Title, Alt Text, Link and a required board.
  2. Fill one row per post. Posting Time is optional, in 24-hour format; blank rows go to the next queue slot.
  3. Keep to text and single-image posts. Videos, Reels and carousels are not supported, and Instagram rows become standard posts.
  4. Use existing Buffer tags in the Tags column, spelled exactly. Unknown tags are ignored.
  5. Stay within your plan's ceiling: 10 posts per channel per upload on Free, limited by your free queue space, and 100 on paid plans.

For evergreen material, recurring posts are in beta. You set how many times a post repeats and on what schedule, and Buffer suggests starting with two or three repeats, because many recurrences raise the risk of spam detection. It blocks the exact same post twice within 24 hours, and moving a recurring post back to drafts clears its settings. There is no endless evergreen loop.

Keep a backlog with ideas, tags and templates

Ideas are Buffer's holding pen for posts that are not ready. The Free plan stores 100 ideas in 3 idea groups, and paid plans hold up to 5,000 per organization in up to 500 groups. Every member of the organization can see them, and the board view is desktop only. One small trap: an idea's title does not carry over when you turn it into a post.

Tags label posts and ideas across the whole organization, and the calendar can filter by channel, by tag and by post type, including Pending Approval. Free gives you 3 tags. Templates sit next to all of this: the composer offers more than 100 ready-made post templates and writing prompts, and you can save your own, with 1 custom template on Free, 5 on Essentials and unlimited on Team. Sharing templates with the whole team is a Team feature. Templates can only be created on the web.

Finish notification posts on your phone

Some posts cannot be published automatically, and you need to know which ones before a reminder surprises you. Notification publishing sends a push reminder to the Buffer mobile app, and you complete the post in the network's own app. It applies to personal Instagram profiles, Facebook Groups, and to Instagram, TikTok and YouTube posts that use features the networks keep for their own apps, such as music on posts and Stories, stickers, polls, product tags and Story links. A reminder post cannot be finished from a desktop, and Sent only means the reminder went out.

💡
Toolkit tip
Install the app on day one

Reminder posts can only be finished from the phone. If any channel uses music, stickers or a personal Instagram profile, you will need the app.

So install the mobile app on day one if any channel will use reminders. It runs on iOS 17 or later and Android 7.1 or later. Location tags do not apply to reminder posts, the AI-Generated label is not available on them, and Community does not collect their comments. Because Instagram allows five active accounts per device, Buffer also advises against running more than five Instagram accounts on frequent reminders.

Reply to comments in Community

Community is Buffer's comment inbox, free on every current plan (legacy Pro, Premium and Business plans do not get it), and it covers 10 networks: comments from Facebook Pages, Instagram professional accounts, Threads, LinkedIn, Bluesky, X, TikTok, YouTube and Mastodon, plus Google Business Profile reviews. It does not cover Pinterest or Substack. On first connection it imports the last 30 days of comments (for X, only on paid plans; Free sees new X comments only), and it keeps the last 12 months. Bluesky shows only comments on posts sent through Buffer, and Mastodon syncs roughly every four hours rather than in real time.

AI reply suggestions learn your voice; Free gets 5 a week and paid plans get unlimited suggestions, though not for X. Saved replies follow the plan too: 1 on Free and unlimited on Essentials and Team. Expect gaps. There are no Instagram DMs, no Story replies and no comments from reminder posts or Google Business Profile posts. Community email notifications, still in beta, send hourly nudges about unreplied comments for the first 24 hours after publishing.

Read Insights, and export once you pay

Insights replaced the old Analyze product, which Buffer retired on October 7, 2026. It is free on every plan and covers Instagram professional accounts, Facebook Pages, X, LinkedIn Pages and profiles, TikTok, Pinterest, Threads, Bluesky, YouTube, Mastodon and Substack. Free shows the last 7 days, the last 30 days and month to date; the last month and custom ranges need a paid plan. Google Business Profiles, Facebook Groups and personal Instagram profiles are not covered. Bluesky and Mastodon history starts only from the moment you connect.

Exports are paid only. On Essentials or Team you can export a zip of three CSVs, a single Markdown file or a PDF, while chart snapshots download on every plan. Branding is less clear: the pricing page lists branded reports with your logo and a cover page on Team only, while the help center describes a PDF with your own cover logo on any paid plan. Insights has no custom report builder, no audience demographics and no best-time-to-post feature yet. Keep channels connected. Disconnecting one deletes its analytics. Our Buffer analytics guide covers the metrics and AI Takeaways in detail.

Invite teammates and set up approvals

Free and Essentials are one-person plans. Adding users requires Team, which allows unlimited users, and invited people can use the organization's paid features even if their own account is Free. The owner must verify their email before sending invites, and team settings live on the web only. Team is $12 per channel a month billed monthly, or $10 per channel a month billed yearly ($120 per channel a year), with lower per-channel prices from the 11th channel on both billing periods.

  1. Invite each person from the web settings; invites can be copied, resent or revoked.
  2. Set Publish access per channel: Full Access, Needs Approval or No Access.
  3. Set Community access separately: Full Access, View Only or No Access.
  4. Turn on Collaboration notifications so approvers get an email when a draft is waiting.

Posts from Needs Approval users always land as drafts awaiting approval, even when they come through the API or the MCP server. The All Channels view lists every pending draft in one place, and approving a draft without a date puts it in the next open slot. Rejecting one sends it back to drafts and emails the creator. Admin access does not include channel access automatically, so check each channel.

Use the browser extension and mobile apps

The free browser extension for Chrome, Safari, Opera and Edge shares links, images and video from any page into the composer, and it can schedule X reposts by hand, except in Safari. It cannot auto-fill Facebook post text, because of Facebook's rules. The mobile apps cover the queue, drafts, ideas, Community and reminders, but some work stays on the web: creating templates, team settings and the Start Page. Multi-post threads are built on the web, though Buffer's mobile help says recent iOS versions (Android in beta) also support them.

Frequently asked questions

Can I try Buffer without an account?+

Yes. Guest mode lets you write up to 10 drafts with images and planned dates, kept in your browser for up to 30 days, but nothing is scheduled or published until you sign up.

Can I connect a personal Instagram account to Buffer?+

Yes on the current plans (not legacy ones), but only with notification publishing: Buffer reminds you on your phone and you post it yourself, with no analytics or comments. Business and Creator accounts publish automatically, except posts with features Instagram keeps for its own app, such as music, stickers, product tags and Story links.

Can Buffer post to a Facebook personal profile?+

No. Facebook personal profiles cannot be connected. Facebook Pages publish automatically, and Groups work only through notification publishing.

Are Buffer's recommended posting times based on my audience?+

No. They come from general engagement data from active accounts in U.S. time zones, per platform, so treat them as a starting point.

How many posts can I upload by CSV in Buffer?+

Up to 10 posts per channel per upload on Free, and only as many as your free queue slots allow; 100 on paid plans. Rows over the limit are skipped without an error, and only text and single-image posts are supported.

Do I need a paid plan to add teammates in Buffer?+

Yes. Free and Essentials are one-user plans; Team adds unlimited users, per-channel access levels and approvals.

The bottom line

Getting Buffer running takes an afternoon if you set it up in the right order. Try guest mode, sign up free, connect Business or Creator accounts wherever a network offers them, and set time zones and slots before you write anything. Then fill the queue from the composer or a CSV, keep ideas and templates for slow weeks, and put the mobile app on your phone for reminder posts. Watch the rules that cost money or data: every channel is billed once you upgrade, the Start Page counts, exports need a paid plan, and disconnecting a channel deletes its analytics.
