If HeyGen's credit math, US-only hosting or Business-only SCORM export is why you are shopping, the right replacement depends on the job. Synthesia is the closest avatar-presenter rival and the pick when a security review asks for ISO certificates or EU data storage. Colossyan suits training teams that need SCORM below an enterprise contract. Descript and VEED fit people who film themselves and want avatars as an extra. CapCut and InVideo are editors, not avatar studios. ElevenLabs replaces only the voice. The number to beat: HeyGen Pro's 1,000 monthly credits buy about 21 minutes of Avatar V video at 48 credits a minute, by our arithmetic.

What you are leaving: HeyGen's plans, credits and gates

HeyGen's pricing page lists Free at $0, Creator at $29 a month billed monthly or $24 a month billed yearly ($288 a year), Pro from $49 a month billed monthly or $41 a month billed yearly ($488 a year) for 1,000 credits, and Business at $149 a month billed monthly or $119 a month billed yearly ($1,428 a year) for the first seat. [1] Credits, not the plan price, decide how much video you get, and our HeyGen pricing guide prices every engine and tier.

Those credit rates are the real comparison point. HeyGen's help center charges Avatar III 4 credits a minute with a video look, Avatar IV 16 with a photo look or 31 with a video look, and Avatar V 48 credits a minute. [2] So one Creator allowance of 600 credits gives about 19 minutes of Avatar IV with a video look or about 150 of Avatar III. Creator includes Avatar V only with limited usage. On monthly plans, unused credits roll over one extra cycle. The Free plan is narrower than it looks: up to 3 watermarked videos a month, each up to 1 minute, for personal, non-commercial use only.

The other reasons buyers look around are gates and trust. SCORM export, SAML single sign-on and shared seats start on Business, and extra Business seats add no credits to the shared pool. HeyGen stores all customer data in the US, lists no ISO 27001 and does not hold ISO 42001. Its Terms give it a licence to train on your content; non-Enterprise users can opt out, and Enterprise data is excluded. There is no self-serve trial of a paid plan. None of this is hidden. It simply pushes some teams elsewhere.

Review platforms split along a familiar line, and we read them without quoting the scores. Trustpilot gathers mostly unhappy customers, so it works as a map of complaints rather than a trend. Weigh it next to the business-software sites, not instead of them. Read the spread as a hint about where friction sits, not as a verdict on the avatars themselves.

Alternative What it is How it bills Strongest reason to switch
Synthesia Avatar-presenter studio Credits; monthly allowance does not roll over ISO 27001 and ISO 42001, EU data stored in Ireland
Colossyan Avatar studio aimed at training Video minutes; no rollover 5 SCORM exports a month on Professional, 14-day trial without a card
Descript Edit-by-transcript recorder and editor Per person Editing footage you recorded
VEED Browser editor with AI avatars Per editor seat Captions, dubbing and editing in one place
CapCut Template video editor Per account; reference-only prices Short social edits, AI avatars for ads
InVideo Prompt-to-video editor Per seat, on credits Full timeline editor on every plan
ElevenLabs Voice and audio platform One shared credit pool Voice work without video
D-ID Avatar video on plan minutes Minutes, rounded up to 15 seconds Simple minute-based accounting

Synthesia: the closest avatar rival, with stronger paperwork

Synthesia's plans are Basic (free), Starter, Pro and Enterprise. Basic gives 10 minutes of video and 500 credits a month, with a Synthesia watermark. Synthesia's pricing page lists Starter at $29 a month billed monthly or $18 a month billed yearly, and Pro at $89 a month billed monthly or $64 a month billed yearly. [3] Starter covers one editor and three guests with 3 personal avatars; Pro covers one editor and five guests with 5 personal avatars. Enterprise adds unlimited video minutes, 1-Click Translation and SAML single sign-on.

Minutes are where the two meet, but they are counted differently. Synthesia says a typical finished minute uses about 100 credits, more if the avatar is on screen throughout, and that Starter yields about 22 minutes a month, counting the 10 minutes included on every plan. HeyGen's figures above are full avatar minutes on one engine. So price a sample script on both. Unused credits differ too. Synthesia's monthly credits expire at month end, while HeyGen's roll over one cycle on monthly plans. Annual Synthesia plans deliver the whole year of credits upfront.

Paperwork is the real reason to switch. Synthesia lists SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001 and ISO 42001, stores EU customer data in Ireland, records consent live from a person aged 18 or older, and says it does not pre-train on customer data. Its stock actors are paid per video. It falls behind elsewhere: SCORM export is Enterprise-only, and dubbing reaches 70+ languages (140+ on Enterprise) against HeyGen's 175+. Our HeyGen vs Synthesia comparison goes plan by plan.

💡
Toolkit tip
Price minutes, not plans

Turn each allowance into finished minutes on the engine you would use: HeyGen Creator's 600 credits are about 19 minutes of Avatar IV with a video look, while Synthesia counts a typical minute at about 100 credits plus 10 minutes included on every plan.

Colossyan: SCORM for training teams below enterprise

Colossyan's Starter plan is free, needs no credit card and gives 20 NEO minutes a month, but no SCORM export. Professional costs $59 a month on an annual plan plus $30 a month per additional member, for one to three editors, with 30 NEO and 10 NEO2 minutes and 5 SCORM exports a month. For three editors that comes to $119 a month on the annual plan, by our arithmetic.

The draw for learning teams is SCORM on a mid plan. Colossyan exports to SCORM 1.2 or 2004 systems such as Workday, Cornerstone and Docebo, while HeyGen keeps SCORM on Business and Enterprise. Colossyan also runs a 14-day free trial with no card. The limits are real, though. Minutes do not roll over, deleting a video does not return its minutes, and export stops at 1080p below Enterprise. EU or US data residency, SSO and the DPA are Enterprise-only. Colossyan says it does not train AI models on customer content.

Check the SCORM gate first

HeyGen exports SCORM on Business and Enterprise only, Colossyan Professional allows 5 SCORM exports a month, and Synthesia keeps SCORM on Enterprise.

Descript and VEED: when you record yourself

Descript

Descript is an edit-by-transcript editor on desktop and in the browser: a recorder and editor first, an avatar tool second. Descript's pricing page lists Free at $0 with 1 media hour a month, Hobbyist at $16 a month billed annually or $24 billed monthly, Creator at $24 a month billed annually or $35 billed monthly for up to 3 seats, and Business at $50 a month billed annually or $65 billed monthly for up to 5 seats, all per person. Business adds custom avatars built from a photo or a text prompt. Descript offers a Free plan rather than a paid-plan trial, has no mobile editing, and its top-ups are one-time and non-refundable. See our Descript review for the editing side.

VEED

VEED charges per editor seat, and every workspace member counts, pending invites included. VEED's pricing page lists Creator at $25 per seat a month billed monthly or $12.25 a month billed annually ($147 a year), and Pro at $45 per seat a month billed monthly or $22.08 a month billed annually ($265 a year), with 4K and translation into 50+ languages. Its Free plan exports at 720p with a watermark. VEED has AI and personal avatars, AI dubbing, Fabric 1.0 and Lipsync 2.0. Still, it shows one avatar on screen at a time. It allows one voice clone per workspace and no credit rollover, and its API is a separate prepaid product.

Narrower picks: CapCut, InVideo, ElevenLabs and D-ID

CapCut

CapCut's US pricing page lists Free at $0, Pro at $19.99 a month per account and Ultra at $79 a month, and it says displayed prices are for reference only, with the final price shown after sign-in and varying by region, device and promotion. CapCut is an all-in-one template editor on mobile, desktop and web, not an avatar-presenter platform. It does offer AI avatars for ads, and Lip Sync on Desktop only. Pick it for short social edits. Skip it for a talking-head course.

InVideo

InVideo is a prompt-to-video editor billed per seat. InVideo's pricing page lists Starter at $20 per seat a month billed monthly with 400 credits, and Plus at $60 per seat a month billed monthly with 2,000 credits. It has something HeyGen lacks: a full timeline editor on every plan, since HeyGen's AI Studio is script-based. Unused credits do not roll over, InVideo reserves the right to change credit costs without notice, Seedance 2.5 starts at Plus, and SOC 2 and single sign-on are Enterprise-only.

ElevenLabs

ElevenLabs is voice and audio, not avatar video. Its pricing page lists Free at $0 with 10,000 credits a month, Starter at $6 a month, Creator at $22 a month and ElevenLabs Pro at $99 a month, with annual billing at twelve months for the price of ten. Unused credits roll over for up to two months while you stay subscribed, and every product draws from one shared pool. HeyGen can import ElevenLabs voices. So the two often work as partners, not substitutes.

D-ID

D-ID deducts each avatar video from your plan minutes, rounded up to the nearest 15 seconds, and unused minutes expire monthly. Trial and Lite videos carry a D-ID watermark, and API minutes come out of the same balance as the web app. Free accounts left unused for six months have their data deleted after an email notice. That accounting is simple. Short clips pay for a full 15-second block, though.

⚠️
Watch out
Leaving wipes HeyGen credits

Cancelling HeyGen to Free or pausing the plan makes your unused HeyGen credits expire, so spend the balance before the cycle ends.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to my HeyGen videos and avatars if I switch?+

Videos, avatars and projects stay accessible after you cancel HeyGen. Digital Twins beyond your one remaining slot are locked, not deleted, until you resubscribe.

Which HeyGen alternatives let me try a paid plan for free?+

Colossyan offers a 14-day free trial with no card. CapCut runs a 7-day Pro trial only in selected regions, for new users who never had Pro; on the web it needs a payment method and charges when the trial ends. HeyGen and Descript offer a Free plan instead of a self-serve paid-plan trial, and VEED's only trial is on Enterprise, for at least 3 users.

Can I keep HeyGen and use ElevenLabs voices in it?+

Yes. HeyGen can import ElevenLabs voices, so you can keep HeyGen for avatars and use ElevenLabs for the voice.

Does HeyGen's Free plan allow commercial use while I compare?+

No. HeyGen's Free output is for personal, non-commercial and internal evaluation use only, so client work and ads need a paid plan.

The bottom line

HeyGen remains the broadest avatar platform in this group, with 175+ translation languages, three avatar engines and a 30-minute cap on Creator and Pro, as our HeyGen review details. Leave it for Synthesia when certificates and EU storage decide the deal, for Colossyan when SCORM on a mid plan matters most, for Descript or VEED when you mostly edit your own footage, and for ElevenLabs when the voice is all you need. Whatever you pick, price finished minutes on the engine you will actually use, never the plan headline.
