Descript is a video and audio editor where you cut footage by editing its transcript, with an AI co-editor called Underlord and a browser recording studio called Rooms built in. Paid plans start at $16 per person a month billed annually, or $24 billed monthly, on Hobbyist. Our verdict: it is the strongest fit for talking-head video, podcasts and course content, where most edits are really word edits. Skip it if you need live streaming, hosting, mobile editing or more than five editors without an Enterprise contract. Every seat is billed per person.
Editing video by editing words
Descript transcribes every upload and recording, then lets you delete a sentence in the Script editor to cut it from the video. By Descript's own help center, automatic transcription can reach up to 95% accuracy with clear audio.[1] It covers 25+ languages, all in the Latin alphabet, so Chinese, Japanese and Russian are not transcribed. Under the script sit a scene editor for layouts and layers and a timeline with Blade, Slip, Range and Hand tools. When a cut needs frame precision, you are not stuck with text alone.
The AI tools come in five groups: Sound good, Look good, Repurpose, Publish and Write. Studio Sound cleans up room noise, Remove Filler Words strips the ums, Remove Retakes and Shorten Word Gaps tighten pacing, and Edit for Clarity trims at three intensities while marking removed words for review. On the video side you get Eye Contact, Green Screen, Automatic Multicam for multi-track sequences and Create Clips for social cuts. Some carry fine print. Transcript import and the glossary work in English only, while filler-word removal now covers English plus Spanish, German, French, Portuguese and Italian, with the language detected automatically. Center Active Speaker is still labelled beta.
AI Speech, the feature once sold as Overdub, now runs text to speech, voice clones and Regenerate. A clone needs a consent statement recorded in English by the speaker, and Descript refuses clones of non-consenting or deceased people. Regenerate for changing spoken words works in English only, up to 250 characters at a time. That keeps the feature honest, but it also means you cannot quietly clone a guest who has left the project. Staff and outside reviewers may listen to training and generated audio, which matters for confidential recordings.
Underlord, the AI co-editor
Underlord takes plain-language requests: write a script, plan an episode, build a highlight reel, resize a video for social channels. Its model picker offers models from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and others, with cheaper fast models for quick edits and premium ones on paid plans only. Every editing turn gets an automatic review pass that checks the change and fixes problems. Underlord (Descript's help center still labels it beta and warns it can get things wrong) is a capable assistant, not an autopilot. Each prompt pays AI credits for its reasoning and for the tools it runs. Even chat costs credits.
Re-using a file from the Media Library or another project costs no media minutes, while uploading the same file again does.
Rooms and the recorders
Rooms is Descript's browser recording studio. Up to 10 participants join from a link, and each is recorded locally in up to 4K and uploaded progressively as a separate track.[2] Hosts can schedule a session and add it to a Google Calendar or Outlook invite, and live captions run as a movable overlay. A Control Room seats producers and viewers: up to 3 on Hobbyist and Creator, up to 10 on Business. Rooms time is capped per Drive at 2 hours a month on Free, 5 on Hobbyist, 15 on Creator and 25 on Business.
Rooms does not work on mobile, and joining from a phone is blocked. Each session tops out at 4 hours, as do the editor recorder and the desktop Screen Recorder. Screen recording on Windows has two gaps: no 4K and no pause or resume. For webinars with 11 or more people, Descript's own page points you to Zoom. SquadCast, the older remote studio, still comes included with a subscription and will eventually be replaced by Rooms, though no sunset date is set. Rooms counts session length once, so a one-hour call with five people uses 60 media minutes.
Cheaper, faster models suit quick edits; premium models cost more credits, so keep them for complex multi-step requests.
What each plan unlocks
Descript bills per Editor seat, and every paid Editor is charged; Viewers are free and can view and comment. Two pools sit behind every seat. Media minutes go to uploads and recordings whether or not they are transcribed, while AI credits go to Underlord and the AI tools. Neither pool rolls over.[3] Transcription itself is no longer metered on current plans. Run out of minutes and uploads stop until the reset, or until you buy a top-up on Creator or Business. The grid below comes from the pricing page.
| Plan | Annual billing | Monthly billing | Editor seats | Media per month | AI credits | Export |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | 1 | 1 hour | 100, one-time | 720p, watermark |
| Hobbyist | $16 per person a month | $24 per person a month | 1 | 10 hours | 400 a month | 1080p |
| Creator | $24 per person a month | $35 per person a month | up to 3 | 30 hours | 800 a month | 4K |
| Business | $50 per person a month | $65 per person a month | up to 5 | 40 hours | 1,500 a month | 4K |
Creator is where most small teams should land, because it adds 4K export, timeline export to other editors, lip sync and top-ups. Business adds Brand Studio for custom share-page branding, translation with proofread and priority support with an SLA. Seat caps matter more than prices. By our arithmetic, a full team of three on Creator runs $72 a month on annual billing ($864 a year), and a full team of five on Business runs $250 a month ($3,000 a year). Annual billing saves 31% on Creator. A sixth editor means Enterprise, which also holds SSO, SCIM and Drive admins.[4]
Top-ups exist only on Creator and Business, expire 12 months after purchase and are never refunded, and plan refunds close 48 hours after the invoice, with Editor seats refundable within 7 days and no prorated refunds after that. Cancelling simply drops the Drive to Free at the end of the cycle. Our Descript pricing guide walks through every billing rule.
A removed Editor's seat is still billed until you reduce the seat count, so cut the seat count as well.
The honest limits
Descript is an editor, not a platform. It does not live stream; it exports to Restream instead. It does not host podcasts either, and publishes to hosts such as Buzzsprout, Captivate and Transistor. Share pages show a total view count and nothing more, so heatmaps and per-viewer data belong to a video host. There is no native mobile app: on a phone you can open projects, read transcripts, play and publish, but not edit. Editing needs an internet connection. The desktop app wants macOS 14 or Windows 11 and 8 GB of RAM, and Firefox is not supported for the web editor.
Descript offers a Free plan rather than a paid-plan trial, and that plan is tight: 60 media minutes a month, 100 AI credits that never refill, 5 GB of storage and 1 GB per upload. Heavy Underlord use drains credits fast on any plan, and Descript says so itself. Dubbing with proofread is a Business feature; the help center says lower paid plans can also dub, so check the plan before buying for translation. Privacy-minded teams should check the Share data with Descript toggle (Settings > Profile). A contractual opt-out from AI training comes only with Enterprise.
Who should pick it, and what to compare
Pick Descript if your edits are mostly about words: interviews, podcasts, tutorials, recorded webinars, marketing explainers. The text-first workflow is the point. Solo creators can start on Hobbyist and move up when they need 4K or top-ups, and teams of up to five that share fonts, layouts and brand assets get the most from Business. Skip it if your work is music-led, since lyrics and music are not transcribed, or if the real job is hosting and analytics rather than editing. Files over 15 hours fail to transcribe, which rules out some archive projects.
Riverside is the closest match for recording. Its Pro plan costs $24 a month billed annually or $35 billed monthly, with up to 4K video, unlimited text-based editing, podcast hosting and a 14-day free trial. Riverside caps separate-track downloads at 15 hours a month on Pro and adds live streaming from Grow. Loom lists Business + AI at $24 per user a month on its page, with editing by transcript and filler-word removal. Kapwing Pro is $16 per member a month billed annually ($24 billed monthly) with 1,000 credits. Vimeo and Wistia are hosts first, though both also record and edit, so Descript's edge over them is editing depth. Our Descript vs Riverside comparison and alternatives roundup go further.
How we score Descript
We score on eight axes, each on its own evidence, and weight them by what drives a video-editing purchase: editing depth and AI count for more than support once the product runs. Seat caps and usage pools change the real cost more than the list price does, so we judge the pricing structure, not just the sticker. Here is the full breakdown, nothing hidden.
An API included on paid plans at no extra cost, a CLI, an MCP server that lets an assistant import media, edit with Underlord and publish to a web link, Zapier and Raycast, direct publishing to YouTube, Wistia, Restream, LinkedIn and podcast hosts (Buzzsprout, Captivate, Transistor and others), Zoom and Google Drive imports, and a non-destructive timeline export to other editors and DAWs. Held back by timeline export starting on Creator ($24 per person a month billed annually), Google Drive import working only in the web app, no direct rendered-file download from the API or MCP (publish to a web link for signed URLs), no YouTube URLs as API or MCP import sources, no direct Vimeo publishing in the current export lists, and API and MCP calls that stop with error 402 once media minutes run out.
Editing video and audio by editing the transcript, with a scene editor and timeline, Studio Sound, Remove Filler Words and Retakes, Eye Contact, Green Screen, Automatic Multicam on multi-track sequences, clips, translation and dubbing in 30+ languages, AI Speech with voice clones, generative media and avatars, Rooms for remote recording with up to 10 participants and local 4K per participant, a Screen Recorder, and 4K export from Creator. Held back by no live streaming, no video hosting or analytics beyond a share page's view count, a 4-hour cap per recording session, Rooms not available on mobile, no editing on mobile or offline, transcription in 25+ Latin-alphabet languages only (no Chinese, Japanese or Russian), and Brand Studio held for Business ($50 per person a month billed annually).
A Free plan with no card (1 media hour a month, 100 one-time AI credits), Hobbyist at $16 per person a month billed annually ($24 monthly) with 10 media hours, 400 AI credits and 1080p watermark-free export, Creator at $24 per person a month billed annually ($35 monthly) with 30 media hours, 800 credits and 4K, transcription no longer metered, Viewers free, and a Non-profit / Education plan at $8 per Editor a month billed annually ($12 monthly). Held back by every Editor seat billed per person (a full Business team of 5 is $250 a month billed annually, our arithmetic), seat caps of 3 on Creator and 5 on Business, no rollover of minutes or credits, no top-ups on Free or Hobbyist, AI credit costs that Descript itself calls non-deterministic, and plan refunds only within 48 hours of the invoice (top-ups never).
Editing that works like a document (cut a sentence and the audio and video follow), automatic speaker labels, filler words removed in one click, a desktop app plus a browser version, in-app tutorials, and share pages and review access for free Viewers. Held back by desktop requirements (macOS 14 or Windows 11, 8 GB of RAM), no Firefox support for the editor, no editing on mobile, two usage pools (media minutes and AI credits) to track, Underlord prompts whose credit cost shows only afterwards in the Usage tab, and renamed or retired features (Overdub now Regenerate and AI Speech, prompt templates being replaced by Underlord skills, SquadCast to be replaced by Rooms).
Underlord as an agentic co-editor with a model picker (Claude, GPT, Gemini and Grok models, Auto by default), AI tools grouped as Sound good, Look good, Repurpose, Publish and Write, transcription that Descript says reaches up to 95% accuracy with clear audio, AI Speech with consented voice clones and Regenerate, dubbing with lip sync, avatars and generated images, video and music, and an Enterprise contractual opt-out from AI training. Held back by Underlord still labelled beta in the help center (with a warning that it can get things wrong), every Underlord message drawing on AI credits (Free gets 100 once, Hobbyist 400 a month), lip sync from Creator and premium models on paid plans only, Regenerate in English only (filler-word removal covers English plus five European languages since August 2026), and Terms that let Descript train on inputs and outputs unless you opt out.
SOC 2 Type II with the report through a trust center, AES-256 at rest and TLS 1.2 in transit, a public status page that lists the API and MCP components, email support open to everyone, a weekly live Q&A on YouTube, priority support with an SLA on Business, and SAML 2.0 SSO, SCIM, audit logs and a dedicated CSM on Enterprise. Held back by no HIPAA claim (the Terms prohibit content with protected health information), data stored and processed in the US per the privacy policy (the Terms allow processing in other countries), no SLA below Business, SSO and admin controls held for Enterprise, and a data-sharing setting that needs checking on self-serve plans (Settings > Profile).
A large help center organized by task (media, script editing, Rooms, SquadCast, API and MCP), API and MCP docs, a dated changelog, in-app tutorials, a weekly live Q&A and community spaces on Discord, Reddit and Facebook. Held back by help and blog pages that still describe the legacy plans migrated after 17 November 2025 (transcription hours, Pro, AI uses, a $12 starting price), pages that disagree on language counts (transcription 25+ versus 30+, dubbing 30+ versus 5), and features labelled beta in the help center after the changelog says they left beta.
Reviewers on business-software sites rate it highly: G2 4.6 from 920 reviews, Capterra 4.6 from 183 and Product Hunt 4.4 from 41. Trustpilot shows 2.6 from 290 reviews (Trustpilot collects mostly unhappy customers, so it is a map of complaints, not a trend). Axis score 4.19: the mean of each platform's displayed rating with at least 30 reviews, weighted by review count (4.6, 4.6, 4.4 and 2.6 = 4.19).
Weighted across the axes above (weights reflect what actually drives the decision in this category). How we score →
Platform ratings are one axis of eight for us, not the verdict. We read them next to the plan gates and limits on Descript's own pricing and help pages, because that is where most of the buying risk sits: seat caps, two usage pools with no rollover, and short refund windows. The product side is strong, with a mature transcript workflow, a studio for remote guests and an AI co-editor that keeps shipping. That balance puts Descript at 3.8/5 on our scale. Buy it for the editing. Plan the usage before you scale it.
Frequently asked questions
Does Descript have a discount for schools or nonprofits?+
Yes. The Non-profit / Education plan is $8 per Editor a month billed annually or $12 billed monthly, with Hobbyist features and up to 3 Editor seats per Drive; eligibility is reviewed through a form.
Can I return to a legacy Descript plan?+
No. Legacy and Sunset plans were migrated to current plans after 17 November 2025, and once you leave a legacy plan you cannot go back to it.
Does Descript have an API?+
Yes. The API is included on paid plans at no extra cost, and usage draws on your AI credits and media minutes. Descript also offers an MCP server, a CLI, a Zapier app and a Raycast extension.
Is Descript SOC 2 compliant?+
Descript states SOC 2 Type II, with AES-256 encryption at rest and TLS 1.2 in transit. The report is available through its trust center or on request.
The bottom line
Descript earns its place by making video editing feel like document editing, and Underlord, Studio Sound and Rooms add real depth on top. The costs sit in the structure: per-person seats capped at five below Enterprise, media minutes and AI credits that reset every month, and plan refunds only within 48 hours of the invoice (7 days for Editor seats). Choose Creator if you need 4K or top-ups, Business if you need shared branding and translation proofread, and the Free plan to judge the workflow first. Look elsewhere for live streaming, hosting or mobile editing.
