The best Descript alternative depends on which job you want done differently. For recorded shows with remote guests, Riverside is the closest swap: its Pro plan costs $24 a month billed annually, the same headline rate as Descript Creator per person, and it adds podcast hosting and live streaming on higher plans, two things Descript does not do. For quick team updates, Loom fits. For short social clips, look at OpusClip or Kapwing. None of them replaces Descript's core trick: editing a long recording by editing its transcript. Descript's paid plans start at $16 per person a month billed annually[1]. Switching rarely saves much money. It buys a different workflow.
What you are measuring the rivals against
Descript is a video and audio editor where cutting a word in the script cuts it from the media. Around that sit Underlord, an agentic AI co-editor (Descript's help center still labels it beta and warns it can get things wrong), Studio Sound, filler-word removal, Create clips and Rooms, a browser studio for up to 10 people with local 4K recording. It publishes to YouTube, Wistia, LinkedIn and podcast hosts. The gaps are just as concrete. Descript does not live stream, does not host podcasts, has no mobile or offline editing, and caps each recording session at 4 hours.
The pricing model matters when you compare. Every Editor seat is billed per person: Hobbyist is $16 a month billed annually or $24 monthly for one seat, Creator $24 or $35 for up to three, Business $50 or $65 for up to five. Each seat gets two monthly pools, media minutes and AI credits, and neither rolls over. Top-ups exist only on Creator and Business. The Free plan exports 720p with a watermark. Descript refunds a plan only within 48 hours of the invoice, so check the terms in our Descript pricing guide before you commit.

Riverside: the closest swap for recorded shows
Riverside starts with a Free plan that gives a one-off 2 hours of multitrack recording at 720p with a watermark. Pro costs $24 a month billed annually ($288 a year) or $35 billed monthly, with up to 4K video, unlimited text-based editing, unlimited transcription and podcast hosting[2]. Recording itself is unlimited, but separate-track downloads stop at 15 hours a month on Pro. Grow, at $34 a month billed annually or $45 monthly, adds live streaming, multistreaming and the Riverside MCP. An extra editor seat is a paid add-on below Business.
The decision is about recording hours. Descript Hobbyist includes 5 Rooms hours a month per Drive, so a solo host who records under 5 hours pays $192 a year there against $288 for Riverside Pro, which is $96 more by our arithmetic. Between 5 and 15 hours, Descript Creator and Riverside Pro cost the same $24 a month on annual billing. Between 15 and 20 hours, Riverside Grow allows 20 hours of downloads at $34 a month billed annually, under the $50 per person a month of Descript Business with its 25 Rooms hours. From 20 to 25 hours, Riverside needs Webinar at $79 a month billed annually, so Descript Business at $50 per person costs less. If you need a host or a live show, Riverside wins outright. Our Descript vs Riverside comparison covers the studios side by side.
Loom and Tella: screen video for teams
Loom
Loom is built for quick async messages, not produced episodes. Its free Starter plan allows 25 videos per person, 5-minute screen recordings and 720p. Business is listed at $18 per user a month, with unlimited videos, unlimited recording time and up to 4K; Business + AI is listed at $24 per user a month and adds auto titles, summaries, chapters, filler-word removal and editing by transcript[3]. Loom's page does not show the billing period beside those figures, and it says annual billing saves up to 17%. The 14-day trial covers Business + AI. Atlassian owns Loom.
Pick Loom when the video is the message: a walkthrough, a bug report, a reply to a client. Its quote-only Enterprise plan adds SSO, SCIM and a 99.95% uptime SLA for larger rollouts. It is the wrong tool for multitrack interviews, studio-grade audio cleanup or a podcast feed, where Rooms, Studio Sound and publishing to podcast hosts carry the work. Those remain Descript's ground.
Tella
Tella targets polished screen recordings. Pro costs $13 per user a month billed annually, with unlimited videos, 3,000 Tella Agent credits a month, 4K export and 106 languages. Premium costs $19 per user a month billed annually and adds a custom domain, removes Tella branding and exports at 60 FPS. Credits pool across the workspace and do not roll over, but bought top-ups never expire, which beats Descript's 12-month expiry. Recordings run up to 6 hours per clip. For a team of three, Tella Pro comes to $39 a month against $72 for Descript Creator on annual billing, by our arithmetic.
Descript Hobbyist includes 5 Rooms hours a month per Drive and Creator 15, so measure a typical month of recording before comparing it with Riverside.
Clip and browser editors: OpusClip, Kapwing, CapCut, VEED
OpusClip
OpusClip turns long videos into short clips. Free gives 60 credits a month with a watermark, and free clips stop being exportable after 3 days. Starter is $15 billed monthly only. Pro is $29 billed monthly or $14.50 a month billed annually ($174 a year), with 300 credits a month that roll over for 2 months[4]. Pro also exports to Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve, schedules social posts and includes an MCP connector. On annual billing, OpusClip Pro costs $18 a year less than Descript Hobbyist, by our arithmetic. Rollover is the real draw.
Kapwing
Kapwing is a browser editor priced on credits. Free gives 10 credits and watermarked 720p exports up to 4 minutes, and Free projects are kept for only 3 days. Pro costs $16 per member a month billed annually or $24 billed monthly, with 1,000 credits, 4K export and 200 GB of storage. Business costs $50 per member a month billed annually or $64 billed monthly, with 4,000 credits, custom voice clones and lip sync. Every member is billed, and Kapwing says annual billing saves 33%. Auto-subtitling runs to 1,000 minutes a month on Pro. Kapwing offers no free trial.
CapCut and VEED
CapCut Pro costs $19.99 a month or $179.99 a year, with 1,200 AI credits a month and 1 TB of storage; Ultra is $79 a month or $900 a year, and Teams costs $12.49 per seat a month on its 2-seat tier. CapCut says displayed prices are for reference only. Against Descript Hobbyist on annual billing, CapCut Pro saves $12.01 a year by our arithmetic. Our files hold no CapCut feature facts. VEED bills per seat, offers a trial only to enterprise teams of 3 or more users, and caps subtitles at a fair-use 50 hours a month. We found no VEED prices to quote.
Loom lists prices without showing the billing period in our capture, Kapwing bills every member and charges more on monthly billing, and CapCut calls its displayed prices a reference, so confirm the period and total at checkout.
Vimeo and Wistia: hosts that also record
These two are hosting platforms first, so they complement Descript more often than they replace it. Vimeo prices per seat: Starter is $12 per seat a month billed annually or $20 monthly, Standard $25 or $41, Advanced $75 or $125. Starter includes 1 seat, Standard 5 and Advanced 10. Vimeo does not state the checkout total, so confirm it at checkout. It also has a screen and webcam recorder, a basic editor with a teleprompter from Standard, analytics with heatmaps, and live events from Advanced. Vimeo is not in Descript's current export destinations, so plan to upload files by hand.
Wistia prices per account, not per seat. Business costs $79 a month billed annually or $99 monthly and includes 3 users; extra users cost $25 a month each on annual billing. Wistia also records in the browser and offers a transcript-based editor, a beta agentic editor called Remix, and AI dubbing in 50+ languages, an add-on on Business paid in credits. Descript publishes directly to Wistia and creates an unlisted share page. Descript's own share pages count total views only. For marketing analytics, many teams edit in Descript and host on Wistia. Our Vimeo vs Wistia comparison weighs the two hosts.
Descript publishes directly to Wistia and creates an unlisted share page, so many teams edit in Descript and host elsewhere instead of replacing it.
How to choose without overpaying
Ratings help less than usual here, because these tools do different jobs and their reviewers judge different work. A clip tool praised for speed tells you little about multitrack audio. Read the complaints instead, and match them to your own workflow. Start from the job, then do the arithmetic on the minimum plan that does it. A solo editor who needs 1080p clips spends $192 a year on Descript Hobbyist or $174 on OpusClip Pro. A podcaster who needs 4K is choosing between two $24 monthly rates on annual billing. A team that needs a player and analytics usually keeps Descript and adds a host. Switch only when a rival does something Descript cannot: hosting, streaming or credit rollover.
Frequently asked questions
Can I take my Descript edits into another editor?+
Timeline export to NLEs and DAWs, including Pro Tools, Logic and Audition, starts on the Creator plan. Hobbyist and Free users can export finished video, audio and transcript files instead.
What happens to my Descript top-ups if I cancel?+
Top-ups are non-refundable and expire 12 months after purchase. They are preserved after cancelling, but cannot be used on the Free plan.
Does Descript have a cheaper plan for schools or nonprofits?+
Yes. The Education and Non-profit plan costs $8 per Editor a month billed annually or $12 monthly, with Hobbyist features and up to 3 Editor seats per Drive, after an eligibility review.
Which alternatives also edit video through the transcript?+
Riverside Pro includes unlimited text-based editing, Loom's Business + AI plan adds editing by transcript, and Wistia has a transcript-based editor. Descript's edge is the depth of that editing, not being the only one.
The bottom line
Descript stays the strongest pick for editing long recordings through the transcript, and most alternatives win on one narrower job rather than across the board. Choose Riverside if you need podcast hosting, live streaming or more than Descript's Rooms hours. Choose Loom or Tella for async screen video, OpusClip or Kapwing for social clips, and Wistia or Vimeo when the problem is hosting and analytics. Price each option per person and per period before you move, because the gaps are often only a few dollars a month.
