Yes, but the Free plan is a test drive, not a workspace

Descript is free to start. The Free plan costs $0, needs no credit card and lets one person record, edit and publish until the limits get in the way [1]. Those limits are tight: 60 media minutes a month, 100 AI credits that never refill, and 720p exports stamped with a Descript watermark. Descript offers a Free plan rather than a paid-plan trial, and we found no trial of Hobbyist, Creator or Business on its pages. Our verdict: Free is enough to learn editing by transcript on a few short recordings. Anything you publish under your own name needs a paid plan.

The cheapest paid plan is Hobbyist, at $16 per person a month billed annually or $24 billed monthly. Free suits a solo creator checking whether text-based editing fits their habits, a marketer testing how Studio Sound handles a noisy room, or a team lead evaluating before buying seats. It does not suit anyone shipping client work, a weekly podcast or social clips on a schedule. It covers one person only. A second Editor needs Creator, which scales to a team of three.

⚠️
Watch out
Old exports keep the watermark

Upgrading from Free removes the Descript watermark from future exports only; videos exported earlier must be re-exported.

What you get on the Free plan, limit by limit

Limit Free Hobbyist
Media time 60 minutes a month 600 minutes a month
AI credits 100, one-time 400 a month
Video export 720p, watermarked 1080p, no watermark
Storage 5 GB 100 GB
Upload per file 1 GB 10 GB
Stock media first 5 results per search first 12 results
Rooms recording 2 hours a month per Drive 5 hours a month
Top-ups none none

Media minutes are the pool that runs out first. Uploads and recordings both count, whether or not you transcribe them, and a still image costs one second. Transcription itself is not metered on current plans, and it covers 25+ languages on every tier. Re-using a file from the Media Library or another project costs nothing, while uploading the same file again does. Cancelled uploads are free. When the minutes are gone, uploads are disabled until the monthly reset, because Free cannot buy top-ups.

Exports carry the heaviest restriction. Free plan exports stop at 720p regardless of your composition settings, and every video from a Free Drive carries a Descript watermark in the bottom-right corner [2]. Screen recordings follow the same rule. YouTube exports are capped at 720p and one hour, and a web-link video at one hour. Audio export length is unlimited on every plan. If you only need a cleaned-up podcast file, that matters more than the video cap.

The AI side is a sampler. Descript describes limited use of Underlord, its agentic co-editor, and a limited trial of AI Speech. The help center lists caption translation and dubbing as limited on Free. Video generation on Free stays on PixVerse V4.5, while paid plans default to MiniMax H3 Max Turbo, and Free runs one generation job at a time. Premium AI models, layout-pack remixing, the API and role-specific Rooms invite links are paid features. Control Room is missing too.

Reuse files instead of re-uploading

On Descript, pulling a file from the Media Library or another project costs no media minutes, while uploading the same file again does.

How far 60 minutes and 100 credits actually go

Start with the minutes. Three raw 20-minute recordings use the whole month. One 45-minute interview leaves 15 minutes for everything else. Rooms counts a session once rather than per guest, yet a one-hour call with five people still costs the full 60 minutes. The plan lists 2 Rooms hours a month, but by our reading the 60 media minutes run out long before those hours do. On Free, record short and trim raw files before upload.

The credits are the harder ceiling. The 100 AI credits are a one-time allowance, not a monthly one [3]. Studio Sound and Remove Filler Words are each capped at 30 credits per file or application, so three full-price passes would use 90 credits by our arithmetic and leave 10. Shorter files usually cost less, since manual AI tools scale with media length. That buys a fair test of audio cleanup, and not much more.

Underlord is where the allowance disappears fastest. Even chatting with it costs a few credits per message, and each prompt pays for the reasoning and for every tool it runs. Descript says those costs are non-deterministic, with no fixed price per action, and thinking alone can reach 200 credits per turn. One ambitious request could exceed the entire Free allowance. Free Drives show usage by default, so watch the Usage tab after every AI action.

⚠️
Watch out
Free AI credits never come back

The 100 AI credits on Descript's Free plan are one-time, top-ups are sold only on Creator and Business, and a single heavy Underlord turn can use most or all of them.

There is no paid trial, so test the workflow on Free

Since no trial of a paid plan is published, the Free plan is your trial. Run the exact job you plan to pay for: one real recording, a transcript edit, Studio Sound, captions and an export. A 720p watermarked file is not final quality, but it shows whether the edit holds up. If you have a promo code, save it for the jump. Codes are single-use, one per purchase, and apply only to new accounts upgrading from Free to a paid plan.

Plan refunds are possible only within 48 hours of the invoice, Editor seats within seven days and top-ups never, so the first two days of a paid plan are the closest thing to a trial; our guide on how to cancel Descript covers the rest. Cancelling simply moves you back to Free at the end of the cycle. A failed experiment therefore costs one billing period at most, not a year, as long as you start on monthly billing.

Students, educators and nonprofits have a cheaper route. The Education and Nonprofit plan costs $8 per Editor a month billed annually or $12 billed monthly, with Hobbyist features and up to three Editor seats. To apply, you start from a free account with a school or nonprofit email, add a payment method that is not charged yet, and submit a form that Descript's team reviews.

When to upgrade, and which plan to pick

Upgrade when you need a clean export, more than 720p, more than an hour of media a month, more AI credits, or a second editor. Hobbyist answers the first four for a single person: 10 media hours and 400 AI credits a month, 1080p without a watermark, 100 GB of storage and custom voice clones. It has no top-ups, though. A month that runs over means waiting for the reset.

Billing period is simple arithmetic. Eight months at $24 add up to $192, exactly the price of a Hobbyist year billed annually, by our arithmetic. Below eight months, monthly is cheaper. Beyond that, annual wins. At $35 a month, eight months come to $280 and nine to $315, against $288 for a year paid upfront. Annual is charged upfront and refunds close after 48 hours, so choose it only after Free has proven the workflow.

Creator, at $24 per person a month billed annually or $35 monthly, is the step for 4K export, timeline export to other editors, lip sync, top-ups and a team of up to three. Business adds Brand Studio and custom branding on share pages. Our Descript pricing guide runs every tier. The upgrade is immediate and prorated, and usage already counted this cycle carries toward the new limits [4]. The watermark disappears from future exports only, so re-export any videos you want clean.

Toolkit tip
Test AI tools on short clips

Manual AI tools such as Studio Sound scale with media length (capped at 30 credits per file), so a short clip stretches the 100 one-time Free credits further.

How Descript's free tier compares with other free plans

Riverside's Free plan is a one-off allowance of 2 hours of multitrack recording, at up to 720p with a Riverside watermark. Riverside also starts its Pro, Grow and Webinar plans with a 14-day free trial. That is the clearest contrast. Riverside lets you try paid features for two weeks, while Descript's 60 minutes come back every month but paid features stay locked.

Kapwing's Free plan gives 10 credits and watermarked 720p exports up to four minutes long, keeps projects for only three days, and Kapwing offers no free trial of its paid plans. Loom's free Starter plan allows 25 videos per person, five-minute recordings and 720p, and Loom offers a 14-day trial of Business + AI. OpusClip's Free plan grants 60 credits a month and watermarked clips up to 1080p, but includes no editing and stops exports after three days.

Against that field, Descript's free tier is generous on editing and stingy on AI. You get the full transcript editor, monthly minutes that refill and 5 GB of storage, but a credit pot that one long Underlord session can empty. If you need a hands-on trial of paid features before committing money, the Descript alternatives guide covers the tools that offer one.

Frequently asked questions

Does Descript's Free plan expire?+

Descript's pricing page frames the Free plan as usable until you outgrow its limits, and we found no time limit on it. The 60 media minutes reset every month; the 100 AI credits do not.

Can I edit on my phone with the Free plan?+

No. Descript has no native mobile app and no mobile editing on any plan: on a phone you can open projects, view transcripts, play and publish, but editing needs the desktop app or a Chromium browser.

Can two people share one Free account?+

Descript's Free plan covers one person. Having a plan on your own Drive does not give Editor access to someone else's Drive; you must be added as an Editor under that Drive's plan.

What happens to my projects if I cancel a paid plan?+

Cancelling is the same as downgrading to Free at the end of the billing cycle, so Free limits apply again. Any remaining top-up balance is preserved but cannot be used on the Free plan.

The bottom line

Descript is free in a real sense: no card, no deadline we could find, and the full editor to learn on. It is not free for publishing, because every Free video leaves at 720p with a watermark and the 100 AI credits never come back. Use Free to test one real project end to end, then move to Hobbyist at $16 per person a month billed annually if you work alone, or to Creator once you need 4K, top-ups or a second editor.
