Pick Descript if editing is the main job and recording is the step before it. Pick Riverside if recording, live streaming and publishing are the main job. On the 4K tier the two land on the same annual price: Descript Creator costs $24 per person a month billed annually, and Riverside Pro costs $24 a month billed annually, or $288 a year each by our arithmetic. Month to month, one person pays the same $35 on both, and a second editor costs less on Riverside. The real split is in the caps. Descript meters every recording through media minutes and a Rooms allowance per Drive, while Riverside keeps recording unlimited and meters separate-track downloads instead. That one difference decides most budgets.
What each plan costs on both billing periods
Descript prices every plan per person, per Editor seat, per month. Hobbyist is $16 a month billed annually or $24 billed monthly, for one seat and 1080p export. Creator is $24 a month billed annually or $35 monthly, with up to three seats and 4K export. Business is $50 a month billed annually or $65 monthly, with up to five seats and Brand Studio [1]. Enterprise is quoted by sales. Refunds are tight (plan refunds only within 48 hours of the invoice); the full rules are in our Descript pricing guide.
Riverside lists Pro at $24 a month billed annually ($288 a year) or $35 billed monthly. Grow costs $34 a month billed annually ($408 a year) or $45 monthly, and Webinar costs $79 a month billed annually or $99 monthly. Business is custom priced through sales [2]. Pro, Grow and Webinar each start with a 14-day free trial, while Descript offers a Free plan rather than a paid-plan trial. Riverside's published refund policy covers Pro and Grow: a full refund on request within 24 hours of a monthly purchase or 14 days of a yearly one.
On monthly billing the 4K plans stay level for one person. A full year of either plan billed monthly comes to $420 by our arithmetic (12 x $35). Teams change the picture again. Descript multiplies by seats: a second editor doubles the bill, and three editors is the cap before Business. Riverside sells an extra editor seat as an add-on on Pro, Grow and Webinar, and keeps collaborative editing and custom roles for Business. That add-on costs $19 a month or $168 a year, so Riverside Pro with one extra editor comes to $54 a month billed monthly or $456 a year, against $70 or $576 for two Descript Creator seats, by our arithmetic.
Recording: Descript Rooms against Riverside's studios
Rooms is Descript's browser recording studio. Each participant records locally on their own machine in up to 4K (Descript's help center says 4K recording is not supported on Windows yet), gets a separate file, and uploads progressively during the session, so files arrive in the project already transcribed. A Room holds up to 10 participants and two simultaneous screen shares, with live captions on screen. Audio records at 48 kHz, with a lossless WAV option in Chrome, Edge and Arc, and Descript also keeps a lower-quality cloud backup track for every participant [3]. If an upload stalls, the full-quality file can be recovered within 7 days from the same browser or app.
Production tools follow the plan. A Control Room lets producers run the session off stage: none on Free, up to three producers or viewers on Hobbyist and Creator, and up to ten on Business and Enterprise [4]. Push-to-talk and role-specific invite links need a paid plan. The hard limits are concrete. Each session stops at 4 hours, and Descript blocks joins from mobile devices. The help center asks for at least 20 GB of free disk space. Plan for a laptop on a wired connection.
Riverside's capture describes its recording side through plans rather than session mechanics. Pro records up to 4K video with 48 kHz audio and no watermark, and adds a teleprompter for the host and in-person multi-cam recording. Pro includes one studio, Grow two, Webinar three and Business unlimited. Riverside's Free plan gives a one-off 2 hours of multi-track recording at up to 720p with 44.1 kHz audio and a watermark. Riverside's rebuilt studio records up to 100 participants per session, each on its own track, with up to 9 shown on screen, and its cloud backup recordings top out at 720p and are kept for 3 months.
On Descript, Rooms has its own monthly allowance per Drive (5 hours on Hobbyist, 15 on Creator), and the same sessions also draw media minutes. Check both before picking a plan.
Editing after the call
This is Descript's home ground. You edit video and audio by editing the transcript, then finish on a scene editor and timeline. Studio Sound, Remove Filler Words, Remove Retakes, Eye Contact and Automatic Multicam on multi-track sequences sit in the same app, along with Underlord, the agentic co-editor (Descript's help center still labels it beta and warns it can get things wrong). Creator adds 4K export, timeline export to other editors and lip sync. Those tools are not free to run: Studio Sound and filler-word removal draw AI credits, capped at 30 credits per file, and even chatting with Underlord costs credits.
Riverside Pro includes unlimited text-based editing and unlimited transcriptions. Its Magic Clips, Magic Audio and AI Co-Creator use no AI credits at all, a real advantage for routine cleanup. Credits pay for AI Translation, AI B-Roll and Animated Clips; paid plans include a starting balance of AI credits. You also do not have to choose one tool for both steps. Descript's Edit in Descript import (beta) pulls recordings directly from Riverside, so a team can record in Riverside and edit in Descript. That means two bills, worth it only when the editing depth saves real hours.
The caps that set your real monthly cost
Descript runs on two pools per Editor seat, and the allowance resets each month with nothing carried over. Media minutes cover every upload and recording, transcribed or not: 1 hour a month on Free, 10 on Hobbyist, 30 on Creator and 40 on Business. AI credits are 100 one-time on Free, then 400, 800 and 1,500 a month. Rooms adds its own allowance per Drive: 2 hours a month on Free, 5 on Hobbyist, 15 on Creator and 25 on Business. Rooms counts session length once, not per guest, so a one-hour call with five people uses 60 minutes.
Riverside meters the output instead. Recording stays unlimited on paid plans, and the cap applies to separate-track downloads: 15 hours a month on Pro, 20 on Grow, 25 on Webinar and unlimited on Business. When you hit the cap, your content stays accessible, but new separate tracks wait for the next billing cycle or an upgrade. Now run a weekly one-hour interview show through both, which means four or five sessions a month.
Descript Hobbyist covers up to five Rooms hours, so a month with a sixth session, or a second weekly show, needs Creator and its 15 hours. Riverside Pro's 15 download hours cover the same show. Riverside counts session length, not participants, so a one-hour call with several guests uses one hour of the cap. Descript Hobbyist cannot buy top-ups. On Creator and Business, extra media time is a one-time purchase of $25 for 5 hours, and extra AI credits are a one-time $35 for 350. Top-ups expire after 12 months.
| Descript | Riverside | |
|---|---|---|
| Free tier | 1 media hour a month, 720p, watermark | One-off 2 hours multi-track, 720p, watermark |
| Recording metered by | Media minutes + Rooms hours per Drive | Not metered; separate-track downloads capped |
| 4K | Export from Creator | Video from Pro |
| Live streaming | None | From Grow |
| Podcast hosting | None, publishes to hosts | Included on Pro |
| MCP server | Paid plans | From Grow |
Descript Rooms blocks mobile joins, stops each session at 4 hours and asks for at least 20 GB of free disk space; 4K needs at least 30 Mbps of upload speed and is not supported on Windows yet.
Live streaming, hosting, webinars and AI assistants
Beyond recording, Riverside covers more of the pipeline. Pro already includes podcast hosting. Grow adds 1080p live streaming, multistreaming to unlimited destinations, custom RTMP and social scheduling. Webinar hosts webinars with up to 100 registrants, Q&A, polls and a HubSpot integration. Descript does none of those jobs. It does not live stream; it exports finished video to Restream. It does not host podcasts; it publishes to hosts such as Buzzsprout, Captivate and Transistor. For more than 10 people, its own page points to Zoom. For live events, Riverside is the only fit.
Both connect to AI assistants through MCP, at different entry points. Descript's API and MCP server are included on paid plans at no extra cost, with usage drawing on credits and minutes; an assistant can edit projects, generate media, search the Drive and trigger publishes. The Riverside MCP arrives with Grow and lets Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor search transcripts, apply edits, cut clips and publish to social media. The cheapest entry is Descript Hobbyist at $16 a month billed annually against Riverside Grow at $34 a month billed annually.
Which one fits which team
A solo podcaster who exports in 1080p gets the lowest bill on Descript Hobbyist, as long as Rooms stays at five hours or fewer a month. A 4K interview show that also streams live belongs on Riverside Grow, since Descript cannot stream at all. A team running registration-based webinars needs Riverside Webinar. Security reviews differ too: Riverside holds SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001 company-wide and offers SAML SSO on some Business plans through its customer success manager, while Descript is SOC 2 Type II and keeps SSO and SCIM for Enterprise.
A video team with two or three editors who cut heavily, add captions and reuse clips gets more from Descript Creator, where the editing tools carry the price. Two editors on that plan come to $48 a month billed annually or $70 billed monthly, by our arithmetic, and a fourth editor means moving up to Business. For the recording side in depth, read our guide to Descript Rooms, and for a show's whole workflow, see Descript for podcasters.
The platform ratings shown here cover Descript only. Riverside also has ratings on G2, Capterra and Trustpilot, so read these as context on how Descript's users judge the editor, not as a head-to-head result. They say how the editor feels in daily use; they say nothing about Rooms hours or download caps. Weigh them below the caps and plan gates above.
Riverside gives a 14-day free trial on Pro, Grow and Webinar; Descript offers a Free plan instead, capped at 1 media hour a month with 720p watermarked export.
Frequently asked questions
Is SquadCast still part of Descript?+
Yes, SquadCast is included with a Descript subscription and billed through Descript. Descript says Rooms will eventually replace it, but no sunset date has been set.
Which browsers can Descript Rooms guests use?+
On a desktop or laptop, guests can join from Chrome, Edge, Arc, Firefox, Safari or Opera. The lossless WAV audio option needs Chrome, Edge or Arc.
What internet speed does a Descript Rooms session need?+
Descript's guest guide asks for at least 10 Mbps, recommends 20 Mbps, and needs at least 30 Mbps of upload speed for 4K recording.
Can Riverside's live streaming be replaced with Descript plus another tool?+
Descript does not stream live, but it can export finished video to Restream, which broadcasts it. That covers rebroadcasts, not a live session recorded and streamed at once.
The bottom line
Choose by the job that fills your week. If most hours go into cutting, cleaning and repurposing recordings, Descript Creator gives the deeper editor at the same annual price as Riverside Pro, with the trade-off that recording time is metered and capped per Drive. If most hours go into recording, streaming, hosting or running webinars, Riverside covers more of the pipeline, keeps recording unlimited and costs less once a second editor joins. Teams that want both can record in Riverside and import into Descript.
