The short answer for podcast teams

Descript fits podcasters who want to record remote interviews, edit by deleting words in a transcript and send the finished episode to their host from one app. The cheapest plan that does all of that is Hobbyist at $16 per person a month billed annually, or $24 billed monthly [1]. It carries one number every weekly show should check first: 5 hours of Rooms recording a month per Drive. A weekly one-hour interview fits. A twice-weekly show does not, and it moves to Creator. Descript is not a podcast host, so a separate hosting service still carries the show.

Recording day: separate tracks and built-in backups

Rooms is Descript's browser recording studio, and it handles up to 10 participants per session. Each participant's device records its own file and uploads it progressively while you talk, so the edit starts with one clean track per voice instead of a mixed call [2]. Audio arrives as 48 kHz AAC by default. In Chrome, Edge or Arc you can switch on lossless recording for a separate WAV per person. Video records up to 4K, not on Windows yet, at a variable frame rate of up to 30 fps. Exporting in 4K needs Creator or higher; Hobbyist exports at 1080p.

Backups are built in. Rooms also uploads lower-quality browser copies of every participant, one WebM track each, and these appear sooner than the primary files. When a guest's laptop dies mid-answer, that copy is your recovery path. A session tops out at 4 hours, and each guest needs at least 10 Mbps of internet, with 20 recommended and 30 Mbps upload for 4K. Descript recommends wired headphones; a Bluetooth headset used as both mic and output forces lower-quality audio. It also advises against recording from corporate, school or other managed networks.

⚠️
Watch out
Check your mic before booking guests

Descript's help center lists AirPods, ASIO drivers, Krisp, the Rode Podcaster USB mic and Rodecaster audio interfaces as devices known to cause recording issues.

Producers have a real role in the session. Hosts, co-hosts and producers can leave Editor Comments during recording that guests never see, and those notes land in the project afterwards, so the fix that answer flags are waiting when the edit begins. Rooms can be scheduled and added to a Google Calendar or Outlook invite. A Control Room holds up to 3 producers or viewers on Hobbyist and Creator and up to 10 on Business. Shows still on SquadCast keep it as part of the subscription; Descript says Rooms will eventually replace it, with no date set. Our Rooms guide covers roles and recovery.

The edit: cut words, not waveforms

After a Rooms session Descript builds a multitrack sequence automatically, transcribes it and applies multicam layouts. From there the edit is text: delete a sentence in the script and the audio on every track goes with it. For recordings made elsewhere, Multi-Track Autosync aligns two or more audio tracks, and Edit in Descript (beta) imports directly from Captivate, Riverside, SquadCast, Ecamm, Restream and HubSpot. Version history lets you restore earlier cuts, and collaborators can comment and edit in the same cloud project. Transcription itself no longer counts against any meter on current plans.

The cleanup tools sit in the Sound good group. Studio Sound removes background noise and room echo and evens out speakers, with an Intensity slider for when the result sounds over-processed. It applies at the file level, so it changes every use of that file in the project. Remove Filler Words lets you delete each um, replace it with a gap or ignore it, and an Avoid harsh cuts option skips fillers that cannot be cut cleanly. Remove Retakes marks earlier takes as ignored text, and Shorten Word Gaps tightens pauses. Gap clips get AI-generated room tone by default, turned off for files with Studio Sound applied, so most cuts do not drop into dead silence.

Per-track mixing covers the rest: EQ, compressor, limiter, volume automation and auto-leveling, which normalizes clips to -16 dB loudness by default. Video podcasts can use Automatic Multicam, which detects who is speaking on a multitrack sequence and cuts to that camera, with cutaways every 30 seconds, every 10 seconds or never. Teams that finish in a DAW can use timeline export from Creator up; AAF splits stereo files into two mono tracks, and only a 0 or 100 percent Studio Sound version carries over. Descript says Pushkin Industries edits in Descript and moves to Pro Tools once the cut is final, a vendor-reported workflow.

Toolkit tip
Turn on lossless WAV

In Chrome, Edge or Arc, enable Generate lossless audio files before a Rooms session to get a separate WAV per participant alongside the default 48 kHz AAC.

Publishing: Descript sends episodes out, it does not host them

Descript has no podcast hosting. It publishes to hosts instead: the export list includes Blubrry, Buzzsprout, Captivate, Castos, Hello Audio, Podbean, Podcast.co and Transistor, plus YouTube, Restream, Headliner and Wistia [3]. Most host exports also create an unlisted Descript share page and finish with a sign-in in the browser. Two hosts need an extra step. Captivate and Transistor accept only audio, so switch a video composition to audio-only before export. If Captivate rejects the file with a mime-type error, turning metadata off is the documented workaround. Re-exporting to Podbean replaces the existing episode, which helps when you catch a mistake late.

Chapters come from markers. Markers show as chapters on Descript web links automatically and inside local MP4, MP3 and AAC files when Include markers as chapters is on. When you publish directly to YouTube, markers become chapters automatically; for a file you upload yourself, YouTube ignores chapter metadata, so Descript copies a formatted chapter list for the description. Direct YouTube publishing runs from the web app only, for channel owners, and not to Shorts or Brand channels. For hosts that display transcripts, Descript supplies JSON and WebVTT files that follow the Podcast Namespace Transcript specification, and the audio it hands hosting partners is m4a at 44.1 kHz and 160 kbps.

Promotion happens in the same project. Create clips cuts 1 to 20 clips of 10 seconds to 5 minutes, in portrait 9:16 or square 1:1, and each clip becomes its own editable composition. Waveforms can be assigned to one speaker so they animate only when that person talks, the basic audiogram look. The Publish tools draft titles, summaries, show notes with chapters and timestamps, YouTube descriptions and social posts from the transcript. Read them before posting. Underlord can write show notes on request too, though Descript's help center still labels it beta and warns it can get things wrong.

Toolkit tip
Mark chapters while you edit

Add markers and turn on Include markers as chapters, so web links and MP4, MP3 or AAC exports carry them. Direct YouTube publishing turns markers into chapters automatically; for a file you upload to YouTube yourself, paste the chapter list Descript copies into the description.

Which plan a weekly show needs

Plan Price per person Rooms per Drive Media hours a month AI credits Editor seats
Free $0 2 h a month 1 100 one-time 1
Hobbyist $16 a month billed annually, $24 billed monthly 5 h a month 10 400 a month 1
Creator $24 a month billed annually, $35 billed monthly 15 h a month 30 per Editor 800 a month per Editor up to 3
Business $50 a month billed annually, $65 billed monthly 25 h a month 40 per Editor 1,500 a month per Editor up to 5

The Rooms cap is the first meter. A weekly 75-minute recording uses 300 Rooms minutes in a four-session month, the whole 5-hour Hobbyist allowance, and 375 in a five-session month, 75 minutes over the cap, by our arithmetic. That month does not fit. Keep sessions under 60 minutes or take Creator's 15 hours. Media minutes are a separate meter: every upload and recording counts, whether or not it is transcribed, but a Rooms session is counted once, not per guest [4]. Hobbyist's 600 media minutes cover either month. Re-using a Media Library file costs nothing; re-uploading it does. Nothing rolls over.

AI credits are the third. Studio Sound and Remove Filler Words are each capped at 30 credits per file or application, and in a Rooms recording each voice is its own file. A two-person episode with Studio Sound on both tracks and one filler pass costs up to 90 credits, so four episodes use up to 360 of Hobbyist's 400 a month and a fifth can push past it. Underlord prompts come on top, and their cost is non-deterministic. Hobbyist cannot buy top-ups; Creator and Business can, from a one-time $35 pack of 350 AI credits that expires after 12 months. Treat these as estimates and read the Usage tab after a pilot month.

Seats are where co-hosted shows get caught. Hobbyist allows one Editor, so two people who both cut episodes need Creator, and every Editor seat is billed per person. Two Creator Editor seats come to $48 a month billed annually or $70 billed monthly, by our arithmetic. Teammates who never edit can be free Viewers. For a show unsure it will last, monthly billing costs no more than annual for the first 8 months on either Hobbyist or Creator; from month 9, annual wins. Plan refunds are possible only within 48 hours of the invoice, so read the pricing breakdown before choosing.

Where podcasters hit the limits

The Free plan works for one test episode, not a show. It includes 1 media hour a month, 100 AI credits once, Rooms for 2 hours a month and 720p video exports with a Descript watermark. Descript offers a Free plan rather than a paid-plan trial, and upgrading removes the watermark only from future exports. Several limits apply on every plan. Descript does not live stream, needs an internet connection to edit and offers no editing on mobile. Some common podcast gear sits on its list of devices known to cause problems, which is why the warning above matters before you book a guest.

Remote-recording rivals bundle what Descript leaves out. Riverside's Pro plan costs $24 a month billed annually or $35 billed monthly, and its pricing page lists podcast hosting on Pro and live streaming from Grow. Pro caps separate-track downloads at 15 hours a month while recording stays unlimited, and extra editor seats are an add-on below its Business plan. Riverside's Pro, Grow and Webinar plans come with a 14-day trial. The choice turns less on price than on where the work happens. Descript's strength is the depth of the transcript edit and cleanup. Our Descript vs Riverside comparison goes through both.

Frequently asked questions

Can guests join a Descript Room from a phone?+

No. Rooms is not supported on mobile devices and the mobile join is blocked; recordings made by bypassing the block may fail, and Descript cannot recover lost sessions. SquadCast, included with a Descript subscription, lists iOS/iPadOS (beta) and Android browsers in its system requirements, so a phone-only guest can join a SquadCast session instead.

Does filler-word removal work outside English?+

Yes. Since August 2026, filler-word removal also works in Spanish, German, French, Portuguese and Italian for all users, with the language detected automatically. It uses AI credits, capped at 30 per file or application.

Can Descript connect to Captivate guest booking?+

Yes, through SquadCast: with a SquadCast API key, a guest booking in Captivate automatically creates a SquadCast session. We found no equivalent for Rooms in Descript's help pages.

Can I fix a misspoken word by typing it?+

Yes, with Regenerate, the current name for Overdub. It works in English only, up to 250 characters, and needs a voice clone authorized by that speaker with a recorded consent statement.

The bottom line

Descript earns its place in a podcast workflow when the show records remote conversations and spends most of its production time cutting talk. Separate per-guest tracks with backups, a text edit across all of them, Studio Sound and filler cleanup, and direct exports to the major hosts cover a full episode without a second editing tool. Check three numbers before paying: 5 Rooms hours a month on Hobbyist, 400 AI credits with no top-ups, and one Editor seat. Outgrow any of them and Creator is the plan. Keep a separate host either way.
