Descript's paid plans cost $16 to $50 per person a month billed annually, or $24 to $65 billed monthly, and every Editor seat is billed on its own [1]. Hobbyist costs $16 a month billed annually ($24 monthly) for one person. Creator costs $24 a month billed annually ($35 monthly) and stretches to three Editors. Business costs $50 a month billed annually ($65 monthly) and caps at five. Enterprise is quoted by sales. The verdict is simple. Creator is the plan most small teams should price first, because it is the cheapest tier with 4K export and top-ups.
The five plans and what each one unlocks
| Plan | Annual billing | Monthly billing | Editor seats | Media hours a month | AI credits a month | Export |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | 1 | 1 | 100 one-time | 720p, watermark |
| Hobbyist | $16 per person a month | $24 per person a month | 1 | 10 per Editor | 400 per Editor | 1080p |
| Creator | $24 per person a month | $35 per person a month | Up to 3 | 30 per Editor | 800 per Editor | 4K |
| Business | $50 per person a month | $65 per person a month | Up to 5 | 40 per Editor | 1,500 per Editor | 4K |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Custom | Custom | Custom | Custom |
The table hides the gates that usually decide the plan. Hobbyist removes the watermark and adds full Underlord access, monthly AI credits for Studio Sound and Remove Filler Words, and custom voice clones, with 100 GB of storage and 10 GB per upload. Creator adds 4K export, timeline export to other editing apps, ProRes import, lip sync, unlimited stock media, 1 TB of storage and top-ups. Business adds Brand Studio for branded share pages, translation with proofreading, priority support with an SLA and 2 TB of storage. SSO, SCIM, Drive admins and invoice billing are Enterprise only.
Descript offers a Free plan rather than a paid-plan trial, and it needs no card. Its limits are tight. You get one media hour a month, 100 AI credits that never refill, 720p exports with a Descript watermark, 5 GB of storage and 1 GB per upload. That is enough to test the transcript editor on a short project, not to publish a weekly series. Our guide to the Free plan covers the point where the watermark alone justifies paying.
Unused media minutes and AI credits reset at renewal on every plan, and the Free plan's 100 AI credits are one-time.
What a whole team actually pays
Because prices are per person, the team bill is the seat price times the number of Editors, and each plan has a hard ceiling. A full Creator team of three costs $72 a month billed annually, or $864 a year, by our arithmetic; on monthly billing it is $105 a month. A full Business team of five costs $250 a month billed annually ($3,000 a year) or $325 a month billed monthly. Viewers cost nothing. Reviewers who only watch and comment add no seats.
The caps shape the choice more than the prices do. A fourth editor forces Business, because Creator stops at three: four people on Business cost $200 a month billed annually, against $72 a month for three on Creator. That jump is $128 a month for one more seat, though it also buys Brand Studio and larger allowances. A sixth Editor means Enterprise. An invite accepted after the cap joins as a Viewer, and single-project collaborators are free but cannot record, upload or use the AI tools.
A switch from monthly to annual billing applies immediately with proration, so you can size your usage on monthly billing first and move to annual once the plan proves itself. Each month on monthly billing costs $8 to $15 per person more than the annual rate, and those months do not count toward the annual charge.
Media minutes and AI credits: the two meters
Each paid seat brings two allowances, and both reset at renewal with no rollover. Media minutes are spent by every upload and recording, whether or not you transcribe it: Free gets 1 hour, Hobbyist 10, Creator 30 and Business 40 a month per Editor, pooled on the Drive. Transcription itself is not metered on current plans. Re-using a file from the Media Library costs nothing, but uploading the same file again does. Run out and uploads stop until the reset or a top-up.
AI credits are the less predictable meter. Underlord, the AI co-editor, spends credits even when you only chat with it, and each prompt pays for its reasoning plus every tool it runs, so the cost varies from one request to the next. A few prices are fixed: Studio Sound and Remove Filler Words cap at 30 credits per file, and an Underlord thinking turn caps at 200 credits. Watch the Usage tab during your first week. Size the plan from that, not from a guess.
Top-ups, and when an upgrade is cheaper
Top-ups exist only on Creator and Business [2]. AI credits sell in one-time packs of 350 credits for $35, 1,000 credits for $80 or 4,000 credits for $200 per pack. Media time sells as one-time packs too: 5 hours for $25, 20 hours for $80 or 50 hours for $150 per pack. Packs are shared across the Drive, used only after the monthly allowance runs out, expire 12 months after purchase and are never refunded. Hobbyist users who hit the 10-hour ceiling cannot buy more time; moving up costs $8 more per person a month on annual billing for 20 extra hours.
The break-even depends on the size of the overflow. At the cheapest rate, the 50-hour pack at $3 an hour, each extra media hour a solo Creator user needs costs $3. Moving that seat to Business costs $26 more a month on annual billing or $30 more on monthly billing, and it adds 10 media hours plus 700 AI credits. By our arithmetic, top-ups stay cheaper until the overflow passes about 9 hours a month on annual billing; on monthly billing, the upgrade only breaks even at the full 10 hours. Packs last 12 months, so compare them by the year. Up to 30 extra hours a year, about 2.5 a month, a mix of 20-hour and 5-hour packs costs less ($130 at most); above that, the 50-hour pack at $150 is the cheapest one-time buy, by our arithmetic. Upgrade earlier only for the extra credits or Business features.
Annual or monthly: the eight-month rule
Annual billing saves up to 35% by the vendor's own claim, but our arithmetic puts the real saving at 33% on Hobbyist, 31% on Creator and 23% on Business. A year of monthly billing costs $288 against $192 upfront on Hobbyist, $420 against $288 on Creator and $780 against $600 on Business. Annual billing is charged upfront and the plan is refundable only within 48 hours, so the real question is how long you will need it.
Monthly wins below the break-even. On Hobbyist, eight monthly payments equal one annual charge. On Creator, eight monthly payments come to $280, still under the $288 annual price. On Business, nine monthly payments come to $585, still under $600. If the project ends inside those windows, pay monthly. If it runs longer, annual is cheaper from the ninth month on Hobbyist and Creator and from the tenth on Business. Since a monthly-to-annual switch applies immediately, starting monthly costs little.
Pulling an uploaded file from the Media Library into another project costs no media minutes; uploading the same file again does.
Billing rules that catch teams out
Seat removal is the trap to know [3]. Removing an Editor frees the seat, but billing for it continues until the Drive owner reduces the seat count by hand. Adding an Editor mid-cycle is prorated for the time left, then billed in full on the next invoice. Upgrades apply immediately with proration, but usage already spent in the cycle counts against the new limits rather than resetting. Downgrades wait for the end of the cycle. So does a switch from annual to monthly.
Each Drive carries its own plan, card and invoices, so a second Drive means a second charge. Invoices are not emailed; only the Drive owner sees them in the app, and the billing name and tax ID must be added before an invoice is finalized. New subscriptions may see local-currency prices at checkout, but invoices stay in USD. US sales tax may apply, and VAT is not included outside the US. An unpaid account drops back to Free after the payment retry period ends.
Refunds are narrow: a plan charge is refundable only within 48 hours of the invoice date, and Editor seats within 7 days [4]. Top-ups are never refunded. Cancelling or downgrading mid-term earns no prorated refund; the plan runs to the end of the term, then the Drive moves to Free. Only the Drive owner can cancel, and each Drive cancels separately. Deleting the account forfeits unused time with no refund. Our cancellation guide walks through each step in order.
Removing an Editor frees the seat, but billing for it continues until the Drive owner reduces the seat count.
The only discount: nonprofits and education
The Non-profit / Education plan costs $8 per Editor a month billed annually or $12 billed monthly. It carries Hobbyist features, meaning 600 media minutes and 400 AI credits a month, and allows up to 3 Editors per Drive. Eligibility covers 501(c)(3)-type nonprofits plus students, educators and administrators at accredited institutions, who apply with a school or nonprofit email, a card on file that is not charged yet, and a reviewed form. Old posts that quote Descript at $12 a month are outdated; the general plans start at $16 per person a month billed annually.
How the price compares with Riverside, Kapwing and Loom
Riverside is the closest rival for recorded shows. Its Pro plan costs $24 a month billed annually ($288 a year) or $35 billed monthly. Riverside starts Pro, Grow and Webinar with a 14-day trial. Pro includes 4K video, unlimited text-based editing and transcription, and podcast hosting; separate-track downloads cap at 15 hours a month while recording stays unlimited, and extra editor seats are an add-on below its top tier. Descript hosts no podcasts. It does not live stream either, and every upload or recording draws on its media minutes. Our Descript vs Riverside comparison weighs the recording side in detail.
Kapwing charges $16 per member a month billed annually for Pro ($24 billed monthly) and $50 per member a month billed annually for Business ($64 monthly), with 1,000 and 4,000 credits, and offers no free trial. Loom lists Business + AI at $24 per user a month, with transcript editing and filler-word removal, and a 14-day trial for that plan; the billing period is not shown in our capture either. Both price per credit or per user, so compare them on the meter you will exhaust first. Confirm each rate at checkout.
Frequently asked questions
Do Descript top-ups survive cancelling?+
Purchased top-ups are preserved after you cancel, but they cannot be used on the Free plan, and they still expire 12 months after purchase.
Is the Descript API an extra cost?+
No. The API is included on paid plans at no extra cost, but its usage draws on the same media minutes and AI credits.
Does upgrading remove the watermark from old exports?+
No. Upgrading from Free removes the watermark only from future exports, so re-export older projects you want clean.
What happened to legacy plans with transcription hours?+
Legacy and Sunset plans were migrated to the current plans on the first billing date after 17 Nov 2025 (annual subscribers at their next renewal). Most customers kept their price, some legacy prices could rise to current pricing, and once you leave a legacy plan you cannot return to it.
The bottom line
Descript is priced per person, so the plan list understates a team bill. One editor with light volume fits Hobbyist; a team of two or three that wants 4K and top-ups fits Creator; four or five people who need branded share pages fit Business, and anyone larger needs Enterprise. Pay monthly if the work ends within about eight months (nine on Business), annually if it runs all year. Watch the Usage tab closely, because AI credits move faster than media minutes, and lower the seat count the day someone leaves.
