What Hootsuite Academy is, and how you get in

Hootsuite Academy is the vendor's own training school. It offers free, self-paced training programs on social media and on Hootsuite itself, and you need a Hootsuite login or a free trial to open them [1]. There is no separate Academy sign-up for outsiders. If you do not already work in a Hootsuite account, the Academy page sends you to start the 14-day trial, which needs no credit card. That is the whole price of entry for the programs on the Academy page. Hootsuite's community page also describes its certification courses as free. Its services page is less uniform: it describes "select access" to Academy courses and certifications for Standard Services customers and "full access" for Premier Services and Enterprise, without saying which courses differ.

The catalog has changed with the product. Since Hootsuite became Social OS, the Academy page leads with programs named after the new apps. Getting Started with Social OS runs 2 hrs 1 min over 8 steps. Lumen by Talkwalker Foundations is a 3 hr 9 min program in 10 steps. Shorter courses cover Perch in 23 minutes, Wisdom in 12, and a 23-minute course on connecting Hootsuite's MCP connectors to an AI assistant for publishing, inbox and analytics. The help center also mentions a Parliament for Admins course and one on AI classifiers in the inbox.

Courses are self-paced, so you can study in the evenings or between client work without booking a class. Hootsuite recommends finishing within 30 days of enrolling, on the grounds that learning sticks better when it is not spread over months. Treat that as advice, not a deadline, since the FAQ attaches no penalty to it. The point to remember is simpler. Watching a course earns you nothing on paper. Only a passed exam does, as the sections below explain, and that shapes how you should plan your study time.

The three certifications on offer

The Academy help page lists certifications in three subjects: How to Use Hootsuite, Social Marketing and Social Listening. They answer different questions, and they suit different people. One proves that you can operate the software, one proves that you understand social marketing as a discipline, and one proves that you can monitor conversations about a brand. Pick by the job you want, not by which course looks shortest, because the certificate a recruiter recognizes depends on the role.

How to Use Hootsuite (the Platform certification)

This is the product certification, and the one Hootsuite talks about most. Its sales pages say more than 30,000 professionals have earned the platform certification. The course behind it takes about 2 hours 30 minutes, according to the Academy FAQ. It proves you can find your way around the tool. The FAQ says the course covers publishing content, engaging with followers and prospects, and running social media campaigns and contests. New customers have started on Social OS since June 24, 2026, and the Academy's newer programs use the new app names, but the FAQ still calls the course How to use Hootsuite (Platform), and Business and Enterprise accounts may still be on Classic. A tutorial or study guide that still talks about Amplify or Insights predates the rename.

Social Marketing

This one is broader than the product. Hootsuite describes the Social Marketing Certification as covering social strategy, content creation, paid ads management and competitive benchmarking. Another help article lists Academy courses in social advertising and advanced social media strategy alongside the Social Marketing certification. For someone building a marketing career, this is the more portable credential. It speaks to skills a hiring manager wants whatever tool the team uses.

Social Listening

The Academy FAQ puts the Social Listening course at about 50 minutes, and of the two exams with a published format, the listening exam is the smaller. The current Academy page also lists a longer Lumen by Talkwalker Foundations program, at 3 hrs 9 min. It matches Lumen, Hootsuite's listening app. Keep in mind that advanced listening, Lumen by Talkwalker with 13 months of history, sits on the Enterprise plan. Smaller plans get basic listening only. So this certification is most useful to people who already work, or plan to work, in a larger team that pays for it.

The exam formats, side by side

The Academy FAQ publishes the format for two of the three exams [2]. We found no matching figures for the Social Marketing exam, so the table leaves it out rather than guess at its numbers. Both published exams are multiple choice and timed, and both use a fixed pass mark rather than a curve, so you know the target before you start.

Exam Questions Time limit Pass mark
Platform (How to Use Hootsuite) 50, multiple choice 60 minutes 75%
Social Listening 10, multiple choice 15 minutes 80%

By our arithmetic, 75% of 50 questions means at least 38 correct answers on the Platform exam, and 80% of 10 means at least 8 on Social Listening. The Platform exam gives you a bit over a minute per question, which is enough if you know the menus and tight if you have to reason through each one. The listening exam is shorter, but its higher pass mark and small size leave little room. Two wrong answers is the most you can afford. Miss three and you have failed.

Study inside the product

The Platform course covers publishing, engaging with followers and running campaigns. Practicing those in the product while you study prepares you better than rereading lessons.

The good news is in the retake rule. The FAQ says you can take the exam until you get a passing grade, which takes most of the pressure off a first attempt. It does not say how long you must wait between attempts, so plan as if a retake might not be instant. If a hiring deadline is close, sit the exam early enough to leave room for a second attempt, and use the gap to revisit the course sections where you hesitated.

What you actually receive: a Certificate of Achievement

This is the detail that trips people up. Hootsuite Academy does not issue certificates of completion. Finishing a course, however long, gives you nothing to download. Certificates of Achievement exist only for people who pass a certification exam. If a job post asks for proof of Hootsuite training, the exam is the proof, and a screenshot of a finished course page will not carry the same weight.

Certificates are delivered through credential.net, a credential hosting service. You sign in there, or sign up on your first visit, and from there you can download the certificate as a PDF or add it to your LinkedIn profile. That covers the usual ways people show a credential: a PDF attached to an application and a line in the certifications section of a profile. Two smaller rules matter as well. First, Hootsuite Academy certifications do not expire, so the certificate is yours to keep. Second, the name on the certificate can be corrected, but a name change request takes up to 48 hours to be reviewed. Check the spelling before you share the link with an employer.

⚠️
Watch out
Courses alone earn no certificate

Hootsuite Academy issues no certificates of completion. Only a passed certification exam earns a Certificate of Achievement.

How to prepare for and take the exam

The steps below follow the Academy FAQ and the certificate help article, and they assume you start from nothing: no Hootsuite account, no employer login and no prior course. If your company already pays for Hootsuite, skip the first step and sign in with your work login, since the Academy accepts any Hootsuite login. Either way, each person enrolls with their own account.

  1. Get a Hootsuite login. If you have none, start the free trial, since Academy access needs one or the other. Our guide to whether Hootsuite is free explains what the trial allows.
  2. Open the Academy and enroll in the course that matches your target certification. Each person needs their own account; there is no team enrollment.
  3. Work through the course at your own pace, aiming to finish within the 30 days Hootsuite recommends.
  4. Practice in the product while you study. The Platform exam is about the tool, and clicking through the menus teaches more than rereading a lesson.
  5. Book a quiet hour. The Platform exam allows 60 minutes for 50 questions; the listening exam allows 15 minutes for 10.
  6. If you fall short of the pass mark, review the weak areas and take it again.
  7. After you pass, sign in to credential.net, download the PDF and add the certificate to LinkedIn.

The trial and the 30-day recommendation do not line up neatly. The trial runs 14 days, while Hootsuite suggests up to 30 days for a course. We found no page that says whether Academy access continues after a trial ends without a purchase. If you are studying on a trial, start the Platform course on day one, and leave the listening course for after. Our step-by-step setup guide doubles as practice material, because it walks through publishing and engaging with followers, two of the topics the FAQ lists for the Platform course.

Toolkit tip
Start the long course first

If you study on the 14-day trial, begin the Platform course (about 2.5 hours, per the FAQ) on day one. Hootsuite does not say whether Academy access continues after the trial ends.

Free training beyond the Academy

The Academy is not Hootsuite's only free training. Its enterprise FAQ says Hootsuite webinars are always free, with a library of upcoming and recorded sessions. The help center describes a free, live, interactive Social Media Bootcamp class, offered alongside the other training and certification options. There is also a page of free recorded training sessions with Hootsuite experts, meant as an introduction or a refresher on the platform.

Some of that material is older than the product it teaches. One recorded session covers Hootsuite Insights, with stream setup, boards and reports. Insights is a former name for what is now Lumen. Meanwhile, the training page that once served Professional and Team customers now shows only the Academy login screen, with separate portals for customers and Hootsuite employees. Use the recorded sessions for concepts. Use the current Academy programs for anything you will be examined on.

Training for a company looks different from training for one person. Hootsuite says it has trained more than 200,000 marketing professionals, and its services page splits help for business customers into tiers [3]. The page says Business (a legacy plan) and Enterprise customers automatically get Standard Services: onboarding, select Academy access and support. It does not say whether the current Standard, Professional or Advanced plans include them. Premier Services add one-on-one strategy coaching with social experts, a designated Customer Account Manager, and support across email, messaging, social and phone.

Phone support matters here, because Hootsuite lists phone support only with Premier Services. Beyond Premier, extra paid add-ons include custom training, strategic deployment services and strategy workshops. The Enterprise plan itself lists expert-led implementation, onboarding, consulting and training, plus 1:1 coaching and full Academy access. Hootsuite does not publish prices for any of these services. Expect them to come up in an Enterprise quote, not on a checkout page.

One limit shapes how a team uses the Academy. It is designed for individual learners, and Hootsuite asks team members to enroll individually with a separate account each. A manager cannot enroll a whole team in one step, and the help page describes no team progress view. If you need to track who has trained, ask your account contact what the Premier or custom training options include, or keep a simple record of each person's credential.

Is Hootsuite certification worth it?

This section is our reasoning, not a vendor claim. The answer depends on who is asking, and on what the person or the company already has: a job search with no Hootsuite access looks very different from a marketing team that already pays for seats and wants new hires productive within a few weeks. We take the two cases in turn.

For a job seeker

For someone looking for a social media or marketing job, the case is decent and the cost is low. The courses are free, the exams can be retaken, and the certificates never expire. A Certificate of Achievement on LinkedIn tells a recruiter that you can run Hootsuite on day one, which matters for roles at companies that already use it. Hootsuite is one of the oldest platforms in the category, founded in 2008, so plenty of in-house and agency teams know the name.

The limits are real too. The Platform certification proves product skill, not marketing judgment. If the employer uses a different tool, it counts for less. That is why the Social Marketing certification is the better bet for a career, since strategy, content and paid ads carry over to any tool. Our honest advice: take the Platform exam if your target employers use Hootsuite, take Social Marketing in any case, and add Social Listening if you aim for larger teams that pay for Lumen.

For a team that already pays for Hootsuite

For a team, the question is less about the certificate and more about whether people use the product well. Here the free Academy is an easy win. Ask every new hire to finish the Getting Started with Social OS program in their first week, and the Platform certification within their first month. It costs nothing and gives the manager a simple, verifiable standard.

Where the Academy stops, the paid services begin. A team that needs coaching on strategy, a custom rollout, or phone support is looking at Premier Services (the only tier that lists phone support) or Enterprise, priced by quote. Before you sign, decide whether those services would replace work you would otherwise do yourself. Our full Hootsuite review weighs the plans and the support quality against the price.

Frequently asked questions

Do Hootsuite certifications expire?+

No. Once you pass, the certification is yours to keep and does not expire.

How do I add a Hootsuite certificate to LinkedIn?+

Certificates are delivered through credential.net. Sign in there, or sign up on your first visit, and you can download the certificate as a PDF or add it to LinkedIn.

Can I enroll my whole team at once?+

No. Hootsuite Academy is built for individual learners, so each team member must enroll with a separate account.

The bottom line

Hootsuite Academy is a free, self-paced school that needs only a Hootsuite login or a 14-day trial to enter. Its value sits in the exams, not the courses: only a passed exam earns a Certificate of Achievement, delivered through credential.net and ready for LinkedIn, and it never expires. The Platform exam asks 50 questions in 60 minutes with a 75% pass mark; Social Listening asks 10 in 15 minutes with 80%. For a job seeker, it is a cheap and honest signal, strongest when paired with the Social Marketing certification. For a team, it is free onboarding, with Premier and custom training available when free stops being enough.
