There are two different things people mean by cancelling beehiiv. A writer may want to cancel a paid beehiiv plan or close the account. A reader may want to stop a newsletter, or stop paying for one, that happens to run on beehiiv. This page covers both, step by step, from beehiiv's own help centre and terms, read on 9 October 2026.

If you are a reader

You do not need a beehiiv account to leave a beehiiv newsletter. The help centre says every email includes a footer link, usually reading update your email preferences or unsubscribe here, and that publications "aren't permitted to remove, hide, or alter it" [14].

Refunds of a newsletter subscription are the publisher's decision, not beehiiv's. The terms make the publisher responsible for refunds to its readers [15].

💡
Toolkit tip

Downgrade to Free before deleting, until you are sure.

## Readers: pausing instead of cancelling

Some beehiiv newsletters let readers pause rather than cancel. When a publisher turns on the subscription retention flow, readers who start to cancel can pause paid or free subscriptions for one, three or six months, and "Resume anytime, with no charges during the pause for paid plans." [30]. Paid readers lose web access to paid content while paused [30]. Some publishers also offer a discount at that point. Whether you see these options depends on the newsletter, not on beehiiv.

Readers: deleting your data

A reader is not a beehiiv account holder, so there is no beehiiv account to delete. The help centre points readers to the Unsubscribe from all communications button in their subscriber profile, and to privacy-law requests for personal data where those laws apply [29].

💡
Toolkit tip

Remove custom domain records before deleting a workspace.

## If you are a writer: the four ways out
Option What happens Billing
Downgrade to Free Account and content kept; paid features stop No more charges after the term
Pause (monthly plans only) Up to 30 days on Free features No charge during the pause
Delete a publication That publication's subscribers and data deleted Plan continues
Delete the workspace and account Everything deleted, irreversibly Ends

From the help centre [5] [4] [43] [29].

Before you cancel: is a lower tier enough?

If the problem is price rather than the platform, two smaller steps may solve it.

Lower the subscriber tier. In Billing & Plan, use the slider and choose Decrease Subscriber Count; the new tier starts at the next billing cycle [5]. The help centre warns that if the list is larger than the new tier allows, you must remove subscribers to keep sending [5]. Dropping from the 10,000 tier to the 5,000 tier on Lite saves $30 a month [3].

Turn off auto-upgrade. If you were moved up a tier automatically, switch off Auto-upgrade my plan tier to stop future automatic charges [5], then prune the list.

⚠️
Watch out

Disabling a paid tier does not stop Stripe billing your readers.

## Option 1: downgrade to Free

This is how most writers cancel. Go to Settings, then Billing & Plan, click Change under your current plan and choose the downgrade [5]. A final summary appears; once confirmed, "You keep your current plan until the end of your billing period." [5].

What changes on Free [5]:

You can cancel a pending downgrade any time before the next billing date from the Your Upcoming Plan section [5].

What the website loses on Free

If your publication's website was built with beehiiv's current website builder, downgrading to Free changes it too [5]:

Check your site after the downgrade date, especially pricing pages for paid subscriptions you have just closed.

Option 2: pause instead of cancelling

If you are on a monthly plan and expect to come back, pausing may be better. "You can pause your subscription for up to 30 days, starting at the end of your current billing cycle." [4]. During the pause the account has Free features and limits; when it ends, the paid plan resumes and is charged automatically.

Annual plans cannot be paused: "You can't pause a plan that's billed annually." [4]. To end a paused plan without being charged, downgrade to Free from the pause banner before it resumes [5].

Option 3: switch from annual to monthly

If you are on an annual plan and want to reduce commitment rather than leave, you can switch to monthly billing; it starts when the annual term ends [5]. This is the closest thing to a cancellation for annual plans, because there is no mid-term refund.

Option 4: delete the account

Deletion is permanent. You must first delete or transfer every workspace you own; deleting a workspace removes all its publications and team members [43]. Then, from your account profile, type DELETE and confirm [29]. The vendor is explicit that deleting is "irreversible" and that to return you "will need to create a new account and start over." [29].

Before you delete:

  1. Export subscribers and posts. Download links last 24 hours [28].
  2. Remove custom domain records. The help centre asks you to remove the custom domain records tied to your publications or website before deleting, so the domain can be reconnected later [43].
  3. Download your Ad Network reports, which serve as payout records [12].
  4. Cancel your readers' paid subscriptions in Stripe, or move them (see below).

What happens to money in flight

Your plan. No prorated refund: "you will not be eligible for a prorated refund of any portion of the subscription fee paid for the then-current subscription period" [15]. The refund article starts from "All sales are final upon subscription" and lists failure to cancel before the next billing cycle among the cases it will not refund [6].

Your earnings. Pending Ad Network and recommendation earnings survive: "If you downgrade your beehiiv plan or close your account, pending Ad Network and outgoing recommendations earnings will still be paid out on the normal payout schedule." [12].

Your readers' subscriptions. This is the step writers miss. beehiiv's help centre warns: "Turning off paid subscriptions or disabling a paid tier in beehiiv does not cancel active subscriptions in Stripe." [53]. If you close a paid newsletter, cancel each subscription in Stripe, or your readers will keep being charged.

Moving to another platform

If you are leaving beehiiv for another platform, the order matters:

  1. Set up the new platform and test it with a small list.
  2. Export subscribers from beehiiv [28].
  3. Move paid subscriptions through Stripe where the new platform supports it.
  4. Cancel or pause the old subscriptions; beehiiv's own guidance for migrations is that the migration tool "does not automatically cancel billing in your previous platform or Stripe account" [53], and the same risk of double billing applies in reverse.
  5. Downgrade beehiiv to Free rather than deleting it, until you are sure the move worked.

Cancelling during the trial

The trial takes no card [4]. There is nothing to cancel: "If you choose not to upgrade to a paid plan when your trial ends, your account stays on the Free plan." [7].

Who in your team can cancel

Plan changes are made by workspace admins from Billing & Plan [5]. Deleting a publication or workspace is reserved for workspace owners [43], and deleting your own account requires first deleting or transferring every workspace you own [29]. If a former colleague owns the workspace, ownership has to move before the account can be closed.

An annual plan, cancelled: a timeline

Take a Lite plan at the 10,000 tier, paid annually on 1 February for $1,428 [3].

Date Action Money
1 Feb Annual plan renews $1,428 charged
10 Jun Writer decides to leave; downgrades to Free No refund [15]
10 Jun to 31 Jan Lite features stay active Nothing further charged
1 Feb Account moves to Free $0
20 Feb Last Ad Network payout for January Paid to Wallet [12]

Our illustration of the vendor's published rules. Had the plan been monthly, the writer would have paid $139 a month from February to June, $695 in all, and nothing after. For a writer who stops in June, the annual plan cost $733 more; for one who stays the full year, it saves $240.

Moving from Pro to Lite instead of leaving

A writer who wants to keep paid subscriptions and ads but stop paying for Pro can move to Lite. At 1,000 subscribers that saves $50 a month on monthly billing, and $230 a month at 100,000 [3]. The help centre documents in detail what changes on a move to Free; it does not document a move from Pro to Lite item by item. Compare the two columns of the feature table before you confirm [3]:

The change takes effect at the end of the billing period, as with any downgrade [5]. Use the time to merge paid tiers and switch off automations beyond ten, so nothing stops unexpectedly.

Getting help with cancellation

Paid plans can open a support ticket from the Help page; Free accounts use the Buzz chatbot [14]. There is no phone line and no support email address on self-serve plans [14]. If you were charged after a downgrade you believe was confirmed, open a ticket with the date and screenshot of the confirmation; refund exceptions are not guaranteed, and "submitting a ticket does not guarantee an exception or a refund" [6].

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a refund when I cancel beehiiv?+

Generally no. The terms rule out prorated refunds, and the refund article says all sales are final upon subscription.

How do I cancel a paid newsletter on beehiiv as a reader?+

Use the manage option in your subscriber profile or contact the publisher; the subscription is billed through the publisher's Stripe account.
