Yes, Brevo is a legitimate company and a legitimate email platform. People ask is brevo legit about 50 times a month in the United States, more often than they ask whether it is free, and the reason is worth understanding. Some ask because they received an email sent through Brevo and want to know whether it is safe. Some ask because their own account was suspended and they want to know whether the company is trustworthy. This page answers both, from the vendor's own legal and help pages and from 100 recent reviews.

The short answer

Brevo is the trading name of Sendinblue, a French company. Its terms identify it as "a simplified joint-stock company registered with the Paris Trade and Companies Register under number 498 019 298" [14]. The product was called Sendinblue until 2023, and many people still search for it under that name: sendinblue alone draws about 6,600 searches a month.

The terms also state that "Brevo is currently ISO 27001:2022 certified." [14] ISO 27001 is the international standard for information security management.

It is a real company with a real product used by many businesses. Its Trustpilot page carries 7,235 reviews and a score of 3.9 [15]. Whether it is the right platform for you is a different question, and the rest of this page is about that.

Toolkit tip

Verify your list and warm up before the first campaign.

## If you received an email sent through Brevo

Brevo is used by many legitimate businesses to send newsletters, receipts and notifications. Seeing Brevo, or its sending domains, in an email's technical headers means the sender used Brevo's infrastructure. It does not tell you whether the sender is trustworthy, any more than a letter's postmark tells you about its writer.

Judge the email the usual way. Do you know the sender? Did you sign up? Does the link go where it says? Does it ask for a password or payment details? If in doubt, go to the company's website directly rather than clicking.

Brevo has its own rules against misuse. Accounts are monitored for sending quality, and the help centre explains that campaigns are suspended when bounces, unsubscribes or complaints cross published thresholds [13]. Marking an unwanted email as spam feeds directly into those complaint figures. That is the most effective thing a recipient can do.

Why some customers call it a scam

Search results for Brevo include angry reviews that use words like scam. Reading them, the pattern is consistent: most describe a suspended account, not a product that does not exist or money taken for nothing.

In our sample of 100 recent Trustpilot reviews, 20 describe a suspension, and all 20 are one- or two- star reviews [15]. To the person whose campaign stopped mid-send, with a subscription still active, a suspension feels like being cheated. The help centre confirms that billing continues: "Note that your subscription remains active during the suspension." [13]

That is a real grievance and a real risk. It is not fraud. The vendor publishes why suspensions happen, what triggers them and how to reactivate, which is the opposite of what a scam does.

💡
Toolkit tip

Mark unwanted email sent through Brevo as spam; it feeds the complaint rate.

## How suspensions work

Brevo monitors sending quality to protect its shared sending reputation. The help centre lists the reasons an account or campaign may be suspended: an anomaly at signup, negative results on campaigns or after sending to new contacts, negative results on transactional emails, a compromised account, or a breach of the terms [13].

For campaigns to new contacts, "Brevo assesses engagement indicators from a random subset." [13] If the early results are positive within one to three hours, the campaign continues. If not, the campaign and the account are suspended.

The published triggers include a hard bounce rate above 2%, an unsubscribe rate above 1% and a complaint rate above 0.2% [13].

The first suspension can usually be reactivated by the account owner from the Deliverability center. The second is different: "If your account is suspended again, we won’t be able to reactivate it." [13]

Why the thresholds are not unusual

A 2% bounce rate and a 0.2% complaint rate sound strict, and they are. They are also close to what the large inbox providers themselves tolerate before they start filtering a sender's mail. Every serious email platform enforces something similar. Brevo is unusual mainly in publishing its numbers.

The thresholds matter most for imported lists. A list that has not been emailed for a year typically contains addresses that no longer exist, and people who no longer remember signing up. Both push the figures over the line on the first send.

So the question is Brevo legit often hides a different one: is my list clean enough for any email platform? If it is not, the next vendor will run similar checks.

⚠️
Watch out

A second suspension cannot be reactivated.

## Billing practices

Brevo publishes its prices, which is the clearest sign of a legitimate vendor. The catalogue is available as a public API and as a Markdown file that calls itself a "Machine-readable pricing reference generated from the Brevo pricing API" [3]. Starter starts at $9 a month, Standard at $18 and Professional at $499.

The billing rules are strict but written down. Subscriptions renew automatically. The terms state that they are "non-cancellable by You prior to the end of your ongoing Subscription", with no refunds for "any prepaid or unused fees" [14]. Price changes come with at least thirty days' notice. Downgrading requires cancelling first, and prepaid credits are lost on a downgrade [9].

None of that is unusual in software subscriptions. It does mean a buyer should start monthly, not yearly, until the account has proved itself.

Data and security

The terms describe Brevo as ISO 27001:2022 certified [14] and list the sub-processors used for each function, with their locations and the legal mechanisms for transfers outside the EU, such as standard contractual clauses.

The terms also exclude sensitive data: the services "have not been designed to collect, process or manage sensitive data" within the meaning of the GDPR's special categories, and customers agree not to use them for it [14]. A clinic, a therapist or anyone handling health data should take that seriously.

When an account is closed, the vendor deletes it permanently: "This action is irreversible, and all data will be permanently lost." [12] Aggregated data is kept for three months after closure for legal and statistical purposes.

⚠️
Watch out

Free accounts can be deleted after months without login.

## Account deletion for inactivity

One rule surprises legitimate users more than any other. A free account that is not used can be deleted. The cancellation page says free users need to "log into Brevo every four months to prevent the automatic deletion of your Free account" [10]. The terms describe six months without login or action, with an email warning first [14].

To a user who comes back after a year and finds the account gone, this can feel like misconduct. It is a published policy. Log in every few months, or export your contacts before leaving an account idle.

What the reviews say overall

Trustpilot shows 3.9 from 7,235 reviews [15]. Our sample of the 100 most recent averages 2.85: 47 one-star, 39 five-star and only 14 in between.

The five-star reviews praise price, breadth and ease of the editor. The one-star reviews concentrate on suspensions and support: support appears in 47 reviews, 27 of them negative [15]. Price is a complaint in only two.

The official WordPress plugin, published by Brevo, scores 4.1 from 285 ratings [16]. The vendor's Shopify App Store listing currently reads "This app is not currently available on the Shopify App Store." [17]

The overall picture is of a legitimate, widely used product with a strict sending regime and support that struggles when that regime bites.

How to use Brevo safely

Six habits avoid nearly every problem the reviews describe.

  1. Import only contacts who opted in to hear from you.
  2. Verify the list before the first send and remove invalid addresses.
  3. Send the first campaign to your most recent and engaged contacts, then widen.
  4. Watch bounces, unsubscribes and complaints after every send.
  5. Pay monthly until the account has a clean history.
  6. Log in to a free account at least every three months.

None of these is specific to Brevo, but Brevo is less forgiving than most when they are skipped.

Is it legit for your business?

Brevo suits businesses that want many channels at a low price: email, SMS, WhatsApp, a CRM and transactional email on one account [20]. It suits developers who need transactional email. It suits large lists mailed rarely, where its email-based pricing is among the cheapest we have measured.

It suits less well a business that will import an old list on day one, or that needs a person on the phone below the Professional plan.

Our composite score is 3.58 out of 5, fourth of the six email platforms we have measured, with the highest capability score and the lowest support and reliability score.

Trust signals compared with other email platforms

How does Brevo compare with the other email platforms we have measured on the signals a cautious buyer looks for?

Signal Brevo MailerLite Mailchimp Constant Contact
Full price list published yes, via public API yes no first band only
Suspension rules published thresholds and procedure review process not measured here not measured here
Trustpilot 3.9 (recent sample 2.85) 4.1 2.5 4.0
Free plan 100,000 contacts 250 subscribers 250 contacts none

Brevo publishes more about its own rules than most of its rivals. That is the strongest evidence of a legitimate vendor: it tells you, in advance, the conditions under which it will stop serving you.

Where it scores worse is the experience of those rules being applied. The recent review sample is much harsher than the badge, and almost all of that harshness is about suspensions and support.

Questions to ask any email platform before trusting it

These five questions separate a vendor you can plan around from one you cannot. Brevo answers all of them in writing.

Who is the legal entity, and where is it registered? Brevo: Sendinblue, registered in Paris [14].

What are the prices at my volume? Brevo: published in a public pricing catalogue [3].

What will make you suspend my account? Brevo: published thresholds and reasons [13].

What happens to my money if I leave early? Brevo: no refunds for prepaid or unused fees; the term runs to its end [14].

What happens to my data if I stop using the account? Brevo: free accounts may be deleted after a period without login; closed accounts are deleted permanently [10] [12].

A vendor that answers these clearly may still not suit you, but it is not hiding anything.

A short history

Brevo began as Sendinblue, a French email and SMS platform best known for transactional email and a generous free plan. In 2023 it renamed itself Brevo and broadened into a sales CRM, conversations, a customer data platform, loyalty and more channels [20]. The legal entity in its terms is still Sendinblue [14], and the old name still carries most of the brand's search traffic.

That history explains two things buyers notice. The free plan is still unusually large, because it was the company's original way to win customers. And the product feels broad rather than deep in places, because several platforms have been added around the original email service.

Frequently asked questions

Is Brevo a real company?+

Yes. It is the trading name of Sendinblue, a French company registered in Paris, and its terms state ISO 27001:2022 certification.

Why do some reviews call Brevo a scam?+

Most describe suspended accounts. Brevo suspends campaigns and accounts that cross published bounce, unsubscribe or complaint thresholds, and billing continues during a suspension.

Is an email sent through Brevo safe?+

Brevo is used by many legitimate senders. Judge the email by its sender and links, as with any email, and mark unwanted mail as spam.

## The verdict

Brevo is legitimate: a registered French company, ISO 27001 certified, with a published price list and published rules. The complaints that call it a scam are, on the evidence, complaints about suspensions, which follow published thresholds and are final the second time. Treat those thresholds as the real terms of the service, keep your list clean, and Brevo is a capable and inexpensive platform.
