Yes, with limits. Zoho Desk has a Free edition that costs $0, has no billing and no end date, and covers three user licenses aimed at plain email ticketing.[1] That is enough for a founder and two helpers answering one support inbox. It is not enough for much else: Free has no workflow rules, no custom fields, no social or WhatsApp channels and no public knowledge base. A fourth agent moves the whole team to a paid edition, starting with Express at $7 per agent per month billed annually or $9 per agent per month billed monthly. Pick Free for email support run by three people. Skip it if customers expect self-service.

What three free seats actually cover

Free is built around one channel. You get one support email address and one advanced web form, and both feed the same ticket list. Default SLAs with escalation keep response targets visible, two macros handle repeat replies, and you work with the default email templates, which Free users cannot create or edit. Each ticket takes up to 10 tags. Agents share a private knowledge base with article versioning, so answers live in one place. Only agents can read it. Customers see no public articles until you move to a paid edition that includes them.

The extras are more generous than the core. The Zoho Desk mobile app and the Radar manager app come with every edition, Free included, so a small team can answer tickets and watch live traffic from a phone. Zoho Assist adds one free user for screen sharing from a ticket. Security basics are not held back either: IP restriction, DKIM and DMARC, GDPR anonymization and the choice of data center all apply on Free. For a three-person shop, that covers the daily inbox, mobile replies and remote help without a bill.

Zoho MCP is free as well. Zoho's MCP pricing page lists it at $0, included for all Zoho users with no separate subscription. It exposes Zoho app tools, Desk among them, to an MCP client, using OAuth and each user's own permissions. The catch is quota. MCP actions count against the API credits of the Zoho app they touch, and the Free edition has the smallest daily API allowance of any Desk edition. An AI assistant that reads tickets all day will hit that ceiling long before a person would.

Support on Free is basic. Zoho's support-plans page puts Free users on email or a customer-portal ticket with a reply in one to two business days, plus the community forums and knowledge base.[2] Phone support starts on Express and live-chat support on Professional. If a stuck setting could cost you sales for two days, that gap matters more than any missing feature, and it is the first reason small teams outgrow the free tier even before they hire.

A free account also has to stay in use. Zoho may terminate an unpaid account that has been inactive for 120 continuous days, after giving notice and a chance to back up the data.[3] Seasonal businesses that park the help desk between peaks should sign in now and then, and export what they need before any long pause. The rule applies to unpaid accounts, which is exactly what a Free account is, so the risk sits with the teams least likely to watch for it.

⚠️
Watch out
Idle free accounts can be closed

Zoho may terminate an unpaid Zoho Desk account inactive for 120 continuous days, after notice and a chance to back up, so sign in to a Free account regularly.

What you give up on Free

Free has no rule-based automation. There are no workflow rules, no business hours, no custom fields and no direct assignment rules. Every ticket is routed by hand.[4] Merge, split and clone start on Express, as do data import and migration help, so moving years of tickets from another help desk onto Free is a manual job. Light agents are missing too, which means a colleague who only needs to read tickets and leave private comments still takes one of the three full seats.

The channel list is the bigger gap. Free has no Facebook, Instagram or X channel, no WhatsApp or other instant messaging, no live chat and no telephony. Generative AI is absent as well. On Express and Standard, Zia's ticket summaries and reply drafts work only with your own OpenAI key, billed by OpenAI, in the US, EU, AU, IN, JP, CA and UAE data centers (the China data center uses DeepSeek with your own key). Answer Bot, which answers customers from knowledge base articles, starts on Standard and is not available in the China data center.

About these prices

Prices shown are what Zoho Desk lists for visitors in the United States, in US dollars. Your price can differ by country, currency and local taxes such as VAT.

Feature Free Express Standard
Price, per agent per month $0 $7 billed annually, $9 billed monthly $14 billed annually, $20 billed monthly
Users 3 5 at most Unlimited
Support email addresses 1 2 5
Workflow rules None 1 per module, tickets only 5 per module
Custom fields per module None 10 50
Social channels None 1 brand 1 brand
WhatsApp and live chat None None 1 channel per type
Public knowledge base None None Included

Read the table as a ladder. Express is the cheapest step that adds automation, custom fields and social channels, while Standard is the first edition where customers can help themselves through a public knowledge base, community forums and the ASAP widget on your site or app. Standard also removes the user cap. If your support plan depends on customer self-service, judge Standard against your budget, not Free.

The 15-day trial, and why it ends on Free

Every paid edition comes with a 15-day trial that needs no credit card. You can move between editions during the trial through the Trial Other Editions link, and a note to support@zohodesk.com can extend it. When the trial ends without a purchase, Zoho moves the account to the Free plan automatically. Nothing is charged. The account stays open, so a trial is a low-risk way to test Enterprise features on real tickets and then decide which edition, if any, earns the money.

That automatic step down has side effects. Features above Free stop working and disappear from view, and workflow rules disabled in a downgrade must be switched back on by hand after the next upgrade. Upgrading before the trial ends forfeits the remaining trial days, and billing starts the day the trial converts. Paid editions then renew automatically; our Zoho Desk pricing guide covers renewal notice, refunds and downgrade credits.

Trial the edition you would buy

Zoho Desk lets you switch editions during the 15-day trial, and a trial that is not converted moves to the Free plan automatically, so test the features you will actually pay for.

When Free stops being enough, and what the next step costs

Headcount decides first. Free stops at three seats, and every agent on an account must be on the same edition, so the fourth hire moves the whole team to a paid plan. Express costs $7 per agent per month billed annually or $9 per agent per month billed monthly, and it holds five users at most. Standard costs $14 per agent per month billed annually or $20 per agent per month billed monthly, and it has no user cap. Deactivated or deleted agents keep being billed until you reduce the seat count.

Here is how the step up adds up, by our arithmetic. Four agents on Express cost $28 a month billed annually ($336 a year) or $36 a month billed monthly. Five agents, the Express ceiling, cost $35 a month billed annually ($420 a year) or $45 billed monthly. The sixth agent forces Standard, and six agents on Standard cost $84 a month billed annually. Annual billing comes out about 22% cheaper than monthly on Express and about 30% cheaper on Standard. A sixth hire on the horizon is no reason to start high. Upgrades bill only the prorated difference at once, so starting on the cheaper edition and moving when that agent joins never costs more. Start on Standard only when you need its features now.

Features trigger the upgrade as often as people do. Three agents who stay on Free pay nothing; the same three on Express would pay $21 a month billed annually or $27 billed monthly, and on Standard $42 or $60. That gap buys a single workflow and social channels on Express, or WhatsApp, live chat and a public knowledge base on Standard. Pay it when the first customer asks to message you on WhatsApp, or when you write the same answer a tenth time and want it public. WhatsApp also runs on prepaid IM credits for messages you start, and in-window replies are free only for the first 1,000 service messages per business number a month.

Start on Express, upgrade later

Zoho Desk Express holds five users at most, but upgrades bill only the prorated difference at once. Even with a sixth agent coming, start on Express ($7 per agent per month billed annually) unless you need Standard's features now.

How the free offer compares with rivals

Among the six help desks in our catalog, Zoho Desk and Help Scout are the only ones with a self-serve free plan. Freshdesk has none; it can move a small account into its Free program, up to two agents, through its Customer Success team, and its 14-day trial needs no card. Zendesk has no free plan and offers a 14-day trial with no card for up to five people. Gorgias has no free plan either, and its 7-day trial needs no card. LiveChat has no free plan, and its 14-day trial of the Text Essential or Growth plan needs no card. Zoho's 15-day trial ties with Help Scout's 15-day trial of Standard or Plus as the longest of the six.

Help Scout, now in our catalog, is the stronger free offer on headcount, as our Help Scout free guide explains. Its Free plan covers five users, one inbox and one Docs site, with a limit of 100 contacts a month, where a contact is someone who got a reply or an AI-resolved answer. Its Standard and Plus plans carry a 15-day trial with no card. The trade is two more seats and a public Docs site, capped at 100 contacts a month, against Zoho's three seats with no contact cap of that kind. Our Zoho Desk alternatives guide compares the paid plans side by side.

The bottom line

Zoho Desk is genuinely free for three agents, with no time limit and no card, and the free tier covers one email address, a web form, default SLAs, a private knowledge base and both mobile apps. It is an inbox for agents. Use it when three people answer email and nothing more. Move to Express when you need automation or social channels for up to five agents, and to Standard when customers need WhatsApp, live chat or public articles, or when a sixth agent joins.
