The best Riverside alternative depends on which part of Riverside you want to replace. Riverside bundles a local-recording studio, a text-based editor, live streaming and webinars into one account, and its Pro plan costs $24 a month billed annually or $35 a month billed monthly, per account[1]. For editing-first teams, Descript is the closest swap, but it bills per person. For live shows, StreamYard starts cheaper. For voice-only interviews, Cleanfeed is the lean pick. For hosting, Wistia and Vimeo fit better, and of the two, only Wistia's webinar plans go past 100 registrants. No rival copies all of it.
Why teams look past Riverside
Three limits drive most of these searches. First, unlimited recording is not unlimited separate tracks: downloads of individual tracks are capped at 15 hours a month on Pro, 20 on Grow and 25 on Webinar, with no rollover, and live streams count toward the cap[2]. Deleting a recording gives nothing back. Second, Pro is for one person. Collaborators on the three self-serve paid plans each need an Editor seat add-on, at $19 a month or $168 a year. Third, live streaming starts at Grow, so a Pro buyer who later wants to stream has to change plans.
A fourth reason is data. Riverside's June 2026 Privacy Policy and October 2026 Terms let it train its own AI models on your recordings, transcripts and AI prompts, and only Business customers can opt out, by written agreement. That matters for teams recording client calls. The 14-day trial needs a card and charges on day 15, and the published refund policy covers only Pro and Grow, within 24 hours of a monthly purchase or 14 days of a yearly one; our Riverside pricing guide covers the exact rules. Riverside's Free plan stays at $0 with 720p video, a watermark and a one-off 2 hours of separate tracks.
The ratings above are Riverside's own platform scores, so read them as a check on how steady Riverside feels to its users, not as a head-to-head with the tools below. None of those tools rebuilds the whole Riverside bundle, so the right choice follows the job you need done. The quick map sorts the twelve options by that job before we go through each one.
| If you mainly need | Look at | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Text-based editing for a small team | Descript, SquadCast | Billed per person; no live streaming in Descript |
| Live streaming on a budget | StreamYard, Restream | Cheaper entry tiers; capped destinations |
| Audio-only remote interviews | Cleanfeed, Zencastr, Podcastle | Audio focus; check which tier records multitrack |
| Hosting and players; webinars past 100 registrants | Wistia (Vimeo for hosting) | Hosting first; Wistia sells webinars as separate plans, Vimeo's stop at 100 registrants |
| Short clips from long recordings | OpusClip, Kapwing, VEED | Editors, not remote studios |
Download separate tracks and edits before your Riverside billing cycle ends; export links expire after 7 days, and a Free account unused for 120 days is deleted with its content.
Descript and SquadCast: editing first, billed per person
Descript is the strongest swap when the editor matters more than the studio. Descript prices every plan per person: Hobbyist is $16 a person a month billed annually or $24 monthly, Creator is $24 a person a month billed annually or $35 monthly for up to 3 seats, and Business is $50 a person a month billed annually or $65 monthly for up to 5 seats[3]. Those Creator digits match Riverside Pro, yet the unit differs. Descript also has a Free plan with 1 media hour a month and watermarked 720p exports.
Remote recording in Descript happens in Rooms: up to 10 participants, local recording up to 4K but not yet on Windows, 4 hours at most per session, and no mobile support. Descript has no live streaming and no mobile editing app. Its media minutes and AI credits reset monthly without rollover, and refunds close after 48 hours (7 days for added seats). Teams that stream, or edit on phones, lose something real here.
The unit decides the bill. By our arithmetic, Riverside Pro with one Editor seat costs $456 a year billed annually, while two Descript Creator seats cost $576 a year billed annually; on monthly billing the same pair costs $54 against $70 a month. At three people, Riverside Pro with two Editor seats comes to $624 a year against $864 for three Descript Creator seats, both billed annually. From two people up, Riverside stays cheaper at every team size Creator allows; for one person, Pro and Creator cost the same, and Descript Hobbyist is cheaper still. Our Riverside vs Descript comparison goes feature by feature.
SquadCast is now part of Descript and sells the same per-person tiers. Unused recording time rolls over, up to twice the monthly hours, and a session that runs out of time is not cut off; extra time costs $5 an hour. A session holds 10 people, one host plus 9 guests, recorded locally as 48 kHz WAV. Guests need no account and can join from Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Brave or Edge, which helps because Riverside does not record in Firefox or Brave.
StreamYard and Restream: when the live show is the product
Riverside reserves live streaming for Grow and up, with unlimited destinations, a 1080p ceiling and 8 hours per stream. Grow costs $34 a month billed annually or $45 a month billed monthly. StreamYard starts lower. StreamYard Essential is $14.99 a month billed yearly or $18.99 monthly, with 2 destinations at 1080p and unlimited streaming. StreamYard Core, at $35.99 a month billed yearly or $44.99 monthly, adds a third destination and 10 on-screen participants, and drops the StreamYard logo.
By our arithmetic, Riverside Grow at $408 a year undercuts StreamYard Core at $431.88 a year by $23.88 when both are billed yearly, and their monthly prices differ by one cent. Essential is the real saving, but only while two destinations are enough. StreamYard Advanced, at $68.99 a month billed yearly or $88.99 monthly, adds 4K local recordings, 8 destinations and webinars for 100 viewers. StreamYard offers a 7-day trial and a 7-day money-back guarantee on the first charge only, and its paid plans are for individual use.
Restream is a multistreaming tool first. Its Free plan covers 2 channels with Restream branding. Restream Standard is $19 a month on monthly billing for 3 channels without branding, and Restream Professional is $49 a month on monthly billing for 5 channels, 1080p streaming and 4K recording. Annual billing saves 20%. Webinars are an add-on at +$99 a month on Standard or Professional for 100 attendees, and the studio holds up to 10 participants. Our Riverside vs StreamYard breakdown covers the streaming details.
Audio-first studios: Cleanfeed, Zencastr and Podcastle
For voice-only interviews, Cleanfeed is the leanest option. Its Lite plan is free, allows commercial use and takes 2 guests, but it does not record multitrack. Cleanfeed Pro is $12 a month in US dollars, with yearly renewal taking a further 20% off, and adds 32 guests, an isolated track per guest and stereo channels. Cleanfeed lists recording time as unlimited on all three plans, and offers a subsidised Pro rate for charities, schools and small personal projects, which Riverside does not.
Zencastr's Free plan records up to 6 participants and adds 4 collaboration seats, live streaming at up to 1080p, transcription with no hours cap in 10 languages, and 5 podcast shows, with 48 kHz WAV and local recording. We could not capture a paid price, so treat Zencastr as a free starting point for small shows and confirm the paid tiers with sales before you plan around them.
Podcastle caps remote multitrack hours more tightly at the bottom: 1 hour lifetime on Free, then 2, 20 and 50 hours a month on Essentials, Pro and Teams. Its Pro tier beats the 15 hours on Riverside Pro, though we found no dollar price to weigh that against. Recording reaches 4K and 48 kHz only on the higher tiers, and sessions take 10 participants. Podcastle gives a 7-day refund on new subscriptions and says yearly plans save 40%.
Riverside bills per account plus an Editor seat add-on per collaborator, while Descript, VEED and Kapwing bill every person, so price the whole team on both sides.
Wistia and Vimeo: hosting and webinars at a larger scale
Riverside's Webinar plan costs $79 a month billed annually or $99 a month billed monthly and caps registrants at 100; reaching 10,000 needs Business on a custom quote. Wistia comes at the problem from the hosting side. Wistia Business is $79 a month billed annually or $99 monthly per account, with 3 users and extra users at $25 a month on annual billing[4]. Wistia sells webinars as separate plans: Webinars at $429 a month billed annually or $537 monthly for 500 attendees, 90-minute streams and 9 presenters, and Webinars Plus at $829 a month billed annually or $1,037 monthly for 1,000 attendees. Wistia's 14-day trial needs no card, and it gives no refunds.
Vimeo prices per seat. Vimeo Starter is $12 a seat a month billed annually or $20 monthly, Vimeo Standard is $25 a seat a month billed annually or $41 monthly, and Vimeo Advanced is $75 a seat a month billed annually or $125 monthly. Live events start at Advanced, where webinars allow 100 registrants per event, the same ceiling as Riverside's Webinar plan; more needs Enterprise with the Events feature, priced on request. Vimeo trials last 7 days and convert, and refunds cover the first purchase only, within 14 days on annual or 3 days on monthly billing. Our sources do not describe per-guest local tracks for either tool, so check before you move interviews.
Riverside's 14-day trial needs a card and charges on day 15 unless cancelled, and Vimeo's 7-day trials convert too; cancel early if you are only comparing.
Clip editors, not studios: VEED, Kapwing and OpusClip
If the real job is turning long recordings into short posts, a clip editor may beat a new studio. Riverside's Magic Clips use no AI credits but stop at 3 sets per recording on Pro, Grow and Webinar. OpusClip's Free plan gives 60 credits a month with a watermark. OpusClip Pro is $29 a month billed monthly or $14.50 a month billed annually ($174 a year), with 300 credits a month that roll over for 2 months, Premiere Pro and DaVinci export, and a social scheduler.
VEED and Kapwing are browser editors billed per seat. VEED Creator is $25 a month billed monthly or $12.25 a month billed annually per editor seat, and its recorder stops at 60 minutes per recording. VEED offers no free trial outside Enterprise and refunds only plans never used, within 14 days. Kapwing Pro is $16 a member a month billed annually or $24 monthly, with 1,000 credits a month and 4K export, and its Free plan exports watermarked 720p videos up to 4 minutes. Neither is a remote recorder.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free Riverside alternative for remote interviews?+
Cleanfeed Lite is free for 2 guests but does not record multitrack, Zencastr's Free plan records up to 6 participants, and StreamYard's Free plan comes with 2 hours a month of local recordings with its logo.
What happens to my recordings if I cancel Riverside?+
Recordings are not deleted on cancellation; access runs to the end of the period and the account drops to Free. Download separate tracks before the cycle ends, because a Free account unused for 120 days is deleted with its content.
Do any of these alternatives offer nonprofit or education pricing?+
Descript lists education and nonprofit pricing, and Cleanfeed offers a subsidised Pro rate for charities and educational establishments. Riverside has no nonprofit, student or education discount.
Which alternative lets guests record from Firefox?+
SquadCast lists Firefox, Opera and Brave among its supported guest browsers. Riverside does not record in Firefox, Brave, Opera or on Linux.
The bottom line
Keep Riverside if you need local multitrack recording, live streaming and webinars under one account, and watch the separate-track hours and Editor seats. Leave for the part that hurts. Descript suits editing-heavy creators who accept per-person billing and no streaming. StreamYard Essential is the cheap route for two-destination shows, and Cleanfeed suits audio interviews. Wistia suits teams whose real need is hosting or webinars beyond 100 registrants; Vimeo fits hosting, but its webinars also stop at 100 registrants per event. For clips alone, an editor such as OpusClip beats a second studio.
